Troy
(2004)

a masterpiece
Troy was an excellent movie, with a stirring score that put me in the right frame of mind for the movie in an instant. James Horner is brilliant and doesn't disappoint here. I cannot wait to buy the soundtrack. For the first half of the movie, I was in hysterical laughter. The script they wrote! The lines, the melodrama, the incredible farse on real emotion! However, when people started dying inevitably, since it is a war film, I started crying. I thought that Brad Pitt's acting was better than expected, and the talent I was most impressed with actually was that of Eric Bana, playing Hector, and Rose Byrnes, playing Brisaeus. I was surprised because I had not heard of either of them but they definitely made the movie as far as acting goes.

The Cider House Rules
(1999)

inspirational
This movie was very inspirational to me and was very hopeful. I think that Michael Caine and Tobey Maguire did a fabulous job and some of the scenes were so moving that I was almost in tears just because of the emotion. Definitely not cheesy, I respect that it raises important issues, makes you consider your values. It made me think again about everything I've always believed, and challenged me to think beyond the obvious.

Although I haven't read the book, clearly this is an original story by John Irving, and more sentimental than I would expect from him.

Note: Not appropriate for children under 14, many friends of mine have said it should have been rated R.

Shakespeare in Love
(1998)

hilarious
I love this movie! I love the puns on Romeo and Juliet, I love the distinctive characters and I love the humor. I laugh every time. Most people say this movie has lots of gratuitous sex...we're talking Shakespeare, I don't think he would consider it gratuitous. See at all costs. But probably no children under 12 though, they might be confused and find it to be disturbing.

G.I. Jane
(1997)

good 'n' gross
Okay, this was a really good movie. Very well done and actually quite inspiring. Unfortunately, also kind of gross. If blood and war and sweat and filth make sure stomach turn, do not watch this movie. I have a fairly good tolerance for violence, and I was kind of grossed out. So, definitely an R movie that young children should not see, it's too revolting. But by all means, do see it because it's a great ride and the beautiful ending that isn't put on or cheesy makes up for any of the blood and guts.

Victory
(1996)

very good.
What I liked the most about this movie is that it was subtle. Nothing was pushed too far, the realistic acting and minimal melodrama made this movie very plausible, watchable and actually made you more in tune to the story, setting and characters in their feelings, where as some movies pour it on too much.

Titanic
(1997)

sad...tragic
This is a beautiful sad movie. People often say that it is cheesy and corny but I think that is is beautiful and moving. The acting is quite good, at least on Kate Winslet's part and most supporting actors. Leonardo DiCaprio's performance is not exactly to be applauded, unlike his performances in Romeo and Juliet and Marvin's Room. But he's not terrible. Overall this is a fabulous movie that I watch at least once a month whenever I want to cry and imagine I could possibly fall in love someday.

Romeo + Juliet
(1996)

bad idea, done wonderfully
Updating Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet was a bad idea to begin with but this movie was done wonderfully for what it was. This movie is very sad and only slightly violent. There are some minor mistakes but overall a very well done movie. The acting performances are absolutely phenomenal and it is very emotionally touching, despite the fact that such a movie is a bad idea. After all, I think that all teenagers can relate easily to Romeo and Juliet whether it's set in Elizabethan England or martians on Mars. Very good movie, bad idea to do, fabulous acting and a heck of a ride!
