Ripley
(2024)

1 star bc this whole series is in black and white
So stupid when directors think they're being artsy by creating a whole series or movie in black and white. You aren't being artsy and it's not "cool". We've had color tv and film for decades now. The directors back in the day would've loved to be able to have their movies and series' in color so why for the love of god would someone create a whole movie/series in black and white in 2024??? It literally brings nothing to the show/film and takes so much away. It's not 1932, give us your movies/shows/projects IN COLOR. And if you absolutely must go black and white, just do flashbacks or something. It absolutely takes everything away from this series, don't waste your time watching and find something else that's, you know, in color 🙄 jfc.

Not a horror movie, had potential but the editing takes at least 5 stars off this rating
I watched this because it was listed as a horror movie on AppleTV and the premise seemed interesting enough. This was not a horror movie. It was more of a psychological drama if that's a thing. It had promise. The main actress did well in the role. The setting and tone had potential. But it still just wasn't a good movie. I admittedly watch a lot of bad movies and will just sit thru the whole thing, half watching as it plays in the background while I scroll on my phone. I couldn't even do that with this movie. I watched the first 15-20 min then fast forwarded thru almost 2/3, watching a few min at a time. The movie was not in chronological order. Which on rare occasions can be done really well, but this is not one of those times. After the beginning, the scenes were placed in no logical order often with no reason for the actions happening on the screen. It left me with so many questions along the way. Were these flashbacks? Was it foreshadowing? Was she dreaming? Is this happening? How did we get here? By the end a few of those questions were answered, but I had so many new ones that it didn't even matter. You may say, "well maybe if you watched the movie you would've known." But I only FF thru scenes showing one or two people with absolutely no dialogue or scenes that were only shots of the surrounding area. I liked the main actress a lot and thought she did a great job with her role. I liked the premise of the story, where it went and what it could've been. But the editing of this movie really ruined it for me. It left large chunks of the story simply just missing. Scenes that should've conveyed character motivations and furthered the story were cut and replaced with minutes long, literally rotating pictures of the local scenery placed in several spots throughout the movie. No idea how this got such a high score on rotten tomatoes.

Bloody brilliant - Pans labyrinth meets Irish folklore
I went in with extremely low expectations bc it's rare for me to really enjoy a creature feature, but I absolutely loved this! The main actress is fabulous. As mentioned in the title, I would describe this as Pan's Labyrinth meets Irish folklore with a touch of horror and some serious gore for about 20ish min of the movie. Maybe throw in gremlins too for the creatures. But this movie definitely exceeded my expectations. I would've liked for them to share more of the folklore behind the redcaps but it didn't really take away from the movie. If you like a cheeky creature feature, give this a shot. It sets up the movie pretty quickly and it kept my interest throughout the movie. There was a nod to late 80s/early 90s type creature feature and some of those movie stereotypes come thru in the characters - (often they make decisions that aren't the most logical). If you're someone who can overlook that type of stuff and enjoy a good creature feature, this is a great choice! I'd love to see a part 2 or something else in this genre from the creator! Glad I came across this gem.

Knock at the Cabin
(2023)

Religious-themed apocalyptic movie
This review is more for those trying to decide if they wanna watch the movie rather than a review of the actors and cinematography.

This movie is a religious themed, Revelations-based apocalyptic movie. From start to finish. Taking the same themes from every movie of that type and lazily trying to modernize it with today's socio-political issues. I read a lot of reviews that said "watch it, it's not what you think." Lol no, it's exactly what you think it would be.

I keep giving Shyamalan chances and regret it almost every time. I decided to give him a chance this time bc The Servant on Apple TV was decent (mostly the last two seasons) and his most recent project. Thought maybe he'd bring us something that fell between The Sixth Sense and The Servant. Nope. The movie had some potential but it was really just predictable. The "twist" wasn't new and it wasn't a particularly clever movie. I knew who the strangers were within 5 minutes of them "knocking at the cabin". If you love *all* Shyamalan movies and/or Christian themed apocalyptic movies (with no natural disasters at all), then you might like this one. If you think Shyamalan peaked at The Sixth Sense, pass on this one unless you really just wanna kill some time and have nothing else to watch.

True Lies
(2023)

Wanted to like it
I love the main actor and the og movie, so I REALLY wanted to like this. But it's just sooooooo unbelievable and cheesy that it's hard to watch. I made it thru the first couple of episodes but I just couldn't do it after that. It's unwatchable. The whole premise is absurd and the execution is even more ridiculous. This isn't a spoiler, it's the plot so I'll share - a wife finds out her husband of several years is in the CIA so basically the CIA makes her a spy too bc she found out, so all of a sudden she's a trained spy when she previously was a college professor. Ridiculous even for a fantasy show. I would recommend watching "The company you keep" instead of this one, which was also released basically the same week. It's a similar concept including a CIA agent but executed way better for a network show. As far as True Lies goes, I give it a 2/10 bc at least the actors look like they're having a good time. I, however, did not.

Mayfair Witches
(2023)

Loved it! (Didn't read the books)
I didn't read the books so I went in with no expectations. I was looking for something to watch and saw this. I loved this! I've only watched the first episode so far but it set the tone and pace for the season. The previews for the rest of the season look really good and it left me excited to see what happens. I love most things witches/vampires/supernatural and I generally like darker/more sinister takes. This show kind of hits those themes. If you're into that, give it a shot! It does make me want to read the books but I'll probably wait until after I finish this season. If you've read and loved the books, I say go into this with an open mind and try not to compare it to the books. In my experience, tv/movie versions almost never live up. I'll update my review and ratings if I feel differently as the season goes on! ✌🏽

Diablero
(2018)

Mexican version of Supernatural
This is a Mexican version of the tv show Supernatural. If you like that show then you'll most likely like this. Similar type of dark humor as well. This is a great show on its own merit though too. I'm halfway thru the first season and so far it's been funny, well-paced and it's held my attention even though it's cheesy at times. I'm watching the English dub on Netflix and it doesn't really match the captions, so not sure if that makes a difference to those watching in Spanish. But it hasn't been an issue for me as I've watched it.

If you're not into supernatural type shows and movies then skip this one. If you like them then it's def worth a watch.

Let the Right One In
(2022)

So good! 3 episodes in and absolutely hooked!
I'm reviewing this after watching the 1st 3 episodes. I've also seen the original Swedish movie and American remake of that movie and loved both. Never read the book. So I went into this series with some expectations already.

Let me just say this series far exceeded my expectations!! I decided to watch the first episode before bed one night and ended up watching all 3 currently available episodes and paying for it the next day at work lol. But I honestly love this series. I already hope it gets renewed for another season. The main story line follows the two movie versions I've seen. However, there's another story line I wasn't expecting that can easily morph into multiple seasons alongside the main plot. This storyline wasn't in the movies, not sure if it's in the book (being purposely vague to avoid spoilers).

If you're a vampire fan, I think you'll love it. If you read the book, you may have some expectations that don't live up. But it's a dark, interesting story and a great "realistic" take on vampires if you're into that. Highly recommend!

America: The Motion Picture
(2021)

Hilarious satirical take on American history
Hilarious satirical take on American history using modern day stereotypes. This is an animated comedy by the same person that produced Archer. The humor is similar to Archer as well. I would describe this movie as "loosely based" on American history as they do take a lot of liberty with "historical accuracy". If I read thru the reviews, I would expect to see a lot of comments talking about "the woke agenda". So if you're someone who believes in the woke agenda, you probably won't like this movie. If you're someone who likes to make fun of people who believe in the woke agenda and you like this style of humor, then you'll probably like this movie. The movie jumps around a bit but overall it's worth a watch if you don't mind the other stuff I mentioned.

Categorization as a "psychological thriller" is misleading
This was ok. Slow burn and most tension is drawn from her amnesiac flashbacks. I love the main actress. But this was not a psychological thriller. This was a drama. If I went into this knowing it was a drama and expecting that, I may have felt differently at the end. But this just didn't live up to the category they put it in, so it just left me disappointed. Honestly, I felt duped and was annoyed with the direction the show went. I saw it coming but not until I was 6 episodes into an 8 episode season, which made me even more annoyed. If you want a drama, you might like it. But there are other shows on Apple TV I would watch before this one.

Saints & Sinners
(2016)

Entertaining but lacks substance.
So this show is def entertaining if you like this sort of stuff. And if you do, I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's basically a soap opera set in a southern black church. The writing is pretty bad at times and definitely lacks substance. The storylines are ok overall but some of the conversations would never happen bc ppl would never say those things lol. Acting is pretty good as well. But wow the misogyny! I cringe literally every episode at some of the ways the women are portrayed, things they say and the way they behave. But I keep watching for the drama I guess lol. Overall I like the show and it keeps me entertained, it just has plenty of cringe and eye roll moments - like any good soap I guess!

Lakewood
(2021)

Had so much potential
This movie had so much potential. Interesting take on a school shooting. But it was honestly just a 5 min intro followed by 60 minutes of Naomi Watts jogging thru the woods, followed by 10 min of Naomi Watts riding in a van, and a 10 min ending 😑. Reminded me of the movie Phone Booth where the whole movie was just Colin Farrell in a phone booth. Skip it unless you have nothing else to watch and you can watch it for free.

Moonfall
(2022)

If you like earth doomsday movies you'll prob like this
I read reviews before I watched the movie so I'll be honest, I wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised. If you're someone that likes earth-ending doomsday or apocalyptic type movies, then I think you'll like this one. It was a doomsday movie with a sci-fi twist. Most doomsday movies are "B" movies at best and this was a great one for that genre. Again I absolutely love earth doomsday movies so I really enjoyed this one. I think if you like those type of movies and enjoy sci-if (and don't go in expecting a cinematic masterpiece lol), then you'll most likely enjoy this one as well. I'd love to see a sequel to this!

Bel-Air
(2022)

Way better than I thought a Fresh Prince reboot would be
Only a few eps in but so far this reboot is honestly way better than I thought it would be. It's def a modern, less cheesy version of an old classic. Loved the original but didn't think a reboot would work. I was wrong. It's got some storylines from the OG and kind of reminds me of All American. If you liked both of those, you'll probably like this one.

Death Note
(2017)

Loved but don't watch if you already know the story
I love all things sci-fi, horror, mystery, psych thriller, etc. I loved this movie. I expected it to be another mediocre random Netflix movie but I was pleasantly surprised. I saw the trailer and thought it would be an updated babadook-type movie. Death god, book of names, owner chooses whose name goes in the book and the death god kills them. I was in but my expectations were low. The movie had just the right amount of gore (minimal but realistic) and kept me interested all the way thru. I was so surprised at how good it was that halfway thru I googled it to see the ratings. I expected them to be high but was surprised to see how low the ratings were. I realized most of the low ratings came from people that knew the story from manga, anime, Japanese movies, etc. So if you know the story, don't watch this with high expectations as it seems like you won't like it. If you've never heard of the story but the plot interests you, I suggest you watch it! I'm a fan!

The Lie
(2018)

Better than the reviews suggest IMO
I didn't have high expectations for this movie. I'd never heard of it and I saw a lot of bad reviews. I decided I'd give it a shot after watching the trailer.

This movie caught me by surprise. It was a dark drama that did a good job of creating tension and suspense throughout the movie. It's not action packed, it builds the tension from the emotions and decisions the characters are forced to make as the story progresses. So if you're more into action movies this might be too slow for you. If you like darker dramas or psychological thriller type movies, I say to watch this movie if you're considering it.

The movie poses the question of how far a parent would go to protect their child. And the actors do a good job of portraying the emotions one might be going thru in a situation like this. The story kept me interested the whole movie and I didn't see the ending coming. Best twist I've seen in a while.

Get Even
(2020)

High school murder drama
It's kind of like how to get away with murder meets Riverdale or Sabrina (without the magic). If you like those kind of shows you'll probably like this. Better than I expected.

The Taking
(2014)

Added 2 stars for the last 30 minutes
Found footage, shaky camera style movie. With about 30 minutes left, I rated this movie 5 stars. Then after watching the end of the movie I came back and changed my rating and decided to add a review.

Not a spectacular movie but an interesting take on this genre. Not super scary, but A few "jumpy" moments and worth a watch if you like Demonic possession or Blair witch style movies.

Take Shelter
(2011)

Slow, unfinished and the ending makes an already avg movie worse
Not sure how this movie gets such rave reviews from viewers. I don't write reviews often but I couldn't believe the user reviews I read on IMDB so I wanted to give another opinion. I'll try to explain without spoilers.

I really wanted to like this movie. It's just slow (which I don't mind when there's a purpose) and the sub plots make this a very disjointed movie. I like the actors and the acting was good, however the movie premise itself just takes a weird turn and doesn't make sense. If the ending happened halfway or even 2/3 thru the movie and dove into that storyline more, this movie would be worth watching. Without that, this is just an unfinished story and will leave you with so many questions.

This movie is very slow and the ending isn't a great "twist", it just left me scratching my head and wondering two things: 1- what was the writer/director thinking?? 2- I can't believe I just wasted two hours on this movie.

6 stars for the acting 2 stars for the unfinished storyline- which could've been great but was very poorly executed 4 stars overall

Insatiable
(2018)

Witty and well-written
I passed by this show a couple of times when I saw it on Netflix. Then I watched the trailer in an airport and decided to give it a shot. I'm hooked. It's a dry, witty, dark comedy somewhere between Good Girls, Desperate Housewives and Chrisley Knows Best. I'm 4 episodes in and I hope it gets renewed.

Nocturnal Animals
(2016)

SO much potential
This movie has so much potential - great cast, great setting, good story. It's just...unfinished.

The acting is great. It's stylishly shot. The storyline has so much potential.

I was left with a sense of wanting more. I wanted to know more. I wanted to know what happened with all of the characters. I felt like this was the first part of a miniseries.

The storyline & feel of the movie was dark. I just keep going back to the word unfinished.

Nothing was resolved. Nothing was explained. Nothing was really finished. I just ended up frustrated that I watched the film.

If movies that are left unfinished leave you frustrated, I suggest passing on this one.

Afflicted
(2013)

Vampire fans should be happy
I'm not a huge found footage or first person footage fan. I am a HUGE vampire fan (keep your judgments to yourself please 😊).

This is the best vampire movie I've seen since "Let the Right One In". I never found myself wondering when it was going to be over, I just kept hoping it wouldn't end.

It's a fun (fun in a dark way) depiction of what it would be like figuring out what is happening to you & then coming to grips with being turned into a vampire.

The camera isn't too shaky, which is one of the things I don't like about first person footage films. There was a good combination of action, humor & suspense. There's plenty of blood, as in most vampire flicks, but it's not overly bloody or gory so if that's what you're looking for you may be a little disappointed.

Good vampire flicks don't come around often, but I would def add this movie to the list. If you're a true vampire fan, you won't be disappointed.
