Bãhubali: The Beginning
(2015)

Rajamouli's fantasy epic
Opinion, Baahubali: The Beginning.

Hype, excitement, "brace yourselves", we've had it all. Phrases iterated time and again, South Indian Cinema, rather a great deal of it has always resided in the disappointing side of the curve. That particular curve, over time, has become so steep that a good telugu movie was referred to with a superficial conjecture. Baahubali stands out to make a new graph, the only difference being it does not stay true to its ancestry.

Beginning of the movie, as I sat in the overpriced INOX seats with some overpriced Nachos and Coffee, I expected the hype to fail and some cheesefest for display so I can go home and whine about how much of torment I have been through. But what I rather caught the eye of, was absolutely fantastic. As I sat myself through with keen eyes, there was some brilliant music playing in the background sending a shiver through my nerves at every engaging moment. Every character who came to display brought more immersion with him than the prior. My favourite of them all has been, Kattappa, Kattappa was outstanding. And the visuals (insert puking rainbows meme here) were stunning.

Now, now, the movie isn't all sunshine and rainbows. There are some unnecessary scenes as well, What I didn't like about Baahubali is that it still holds some of the telugu cinema clichés, the unnecessary dance songs, the romance arc. But wait, that's about it. That is what i had to complain about.

As the interval set a grand stage for the second half, I was still getting over the marvelous pre interval scene. And what followed the interval -the warfare, the story, the powerful screenplay, the effort put into visuals, the grand stage, performance by the cast, was pure cinematic excellence. And when the movie ended, I could not argue but rule out that Baahubali is amazing. Making a movie like Baahubali requires a great deal of effort and S S Rajamouli has put every bit into it. If not for the stifling unnecessary scenes, Baahubali is fantastic and one amongst the best Telugu movies.

Highly Recommended. Make an effort to watch it on the big screen.

Avengers: Age of Ultron
(2015)

Whedon does a wonderful job.
Review, Avengers: Age of Ultron.

The right lines at the right moment, the right action, the right VFX. Marvel does it time and again, the envelope of striking humour surrounding the plot though excessively at times but never ineffective.

Avengers isn't your average Marvel movie which you anticipate to be funny, light and entertaining. Yes, it didn't lose the humour, yes, Tony is still the guy. No doubt it's very true to the form but what makes this a remarkably different addition to the series is... well it's deep. It is highly character driven. A go through into each of the characters' lives, their complexities, their fears, sadness, each of which continually adds to your awe.

The common cast surely do a good job at doing what they do but there will be some character where most of your curiosity will deviate to and that's, you'll love to discover, is James Spades. Right from his dialogues to their deliverance, he shines excellently as the antagonist.

Moments exist where dialogues so good will charm your soul, moments exist where the action is so satisfying that you are shouting, applauding and probably craving for more of the like but at the same time there are moments which render you a underwhelming feel, moments which have no proper argument or explanation backing them up. Avengers Age of Ultron is not a flawless movie.

While being formulaic and having its fair share of flaws, its over the top action, the chemistry between the characters, the phenomenal screenplay and the skillfully employed and brilliantly voiced Ultron prove that Age of Ultron is a fantastic sequel. Its number of pluses outnumbering its flaws by large, Marvel takes a big step forward.

8.5/10. Amazing.

Detective Byomkesh Bakshy!
(2015)

Outstanding
Struggling to solve the case, breaking down each clue into a significant detail, in a world ravaged by the British dominion and equally endangered by war, the 1940s, there lives a detective Byomkesh Bakshy typically stylized as Bakshy Babu. Sublime his way with words, sharp his mind and snazzy his attire, Sushant Singh Rajput dazzles as the Indian counterpart of the well known mastermind.

Revitalizing the ingenuously crafted characters of Bandopadhyay, laughs gelled up here and there, Dibakar Bannerjee creates a thriller turning out in no more than 15 to 20 minutes to be a very intriguing flick as Bakshy Babu untangles the mystery by joining the pieces from the fragments of hints scattered across the locale.

What's so different about the movie is that it takes the road less traveled by. It portrays a beautifully archaic Calcutta with vintage cars and trams, and a story paced with an excellent flow. With a strong grip on your curiosity and attention, it shines as the product of masterful thinking timed by fluid execution. From the creation of an eerie environment to the brilliant juicing up of characters, Detective Byomkesh Bakshy is a cinematic delight.

Fantastic. 8.5/10.

Yevade Subramanyam
(2015)

Magical
Set with a goal, appeasing his boss for promotion, buying him shares which are not even near picayune or easily obtainable, getting engaged with his daughter, Subramanyam, in his thought process- achieving goals, being rich, having a reputable status and being famous as the only reason and way of life, is a near successful industrialist who is always, at the end of the day, the man of laud at his office.

Rishi, having a thought process which is the binary opposite of his best friend, has always envisioned life as something very valuable and precious. "Not to be wasted on petty things.", he says, "If one day people ask me when was the last time I really enjoyed, I make sure I can tell them it was the right last moment."

Slow paced, tawdry scenes in the first half exist which make you think it's a lackluster but the brilliantly crafted scenes putting you in complete amazement and bliss make you rethink your words. Blending phenomenal music and some of the best character development into play, an engaging cast with direction and execution done aright, Yevade Subramanyam though falling flat in some parts of its first half, shines as something very beautiful and thought provoking for the remnant as it becomes from a story of two best friends of opposite thoughts to a journey of introspection, change and self discovery.

NH10
(2015)

NH10 leaves you at a loss of words
Lighting up her cigarette with the matchstick lying deserted from its owner, Anushka, with the slightest hold on to the edge of her sanity and an enigmatic facial expression, picks up the inanimate steel built strut from the ground and with the shrill, clanging sound of the steel being dragged along the concrete road, she lays down the groundwork for her revenge.

Navdeep Singh has not only made the most out of a road trip gone wild but has also filled in each of the scenes a continual thrill, of psyche driving in a meandering path of moral uncertainty and of the exceptional screenplay with Darshan Kumaar as the village ruffian and Sharma as the shackle breaker.

Keeping itself as the very point of interest throughout its complete time span of a near-2 hour crime drama, the movie becomes more and more worthy of your extol as you seek deeper through the story. While staying perfectly true to realism, NH10, with excellent direction, a finely crafted story and brilliant performances, shines as Singh's undiluted masterpiece.

9/10.

PK
(2014)

Hirani takes innovation and creative thinking to a different level
While entering the theater, I was excited and so were many people in my vicinity. Being a Rajkumar Hirani flick, one can hardly expect disappointing but you never really know. After 3 idiots in 2009, it took Hirani a hiatus of five years to come up with PK. But does this deliver enough to live up to its promise? Well, I feel proud to say this, Hirani has not let us down. Aamir Khan this time in PK has left no stone unturned and has put in his best for his role. From his physique to his language, the actor is simply brilliant. Indulging himself in a role of an innocent outsider(the role which suits Aamir perfectly), he speaks more with his expressions than any of the actors do with their words. With Aamir on the frontier, it is hardly fair game for the remnant of the crew to show their finesse. Quite to the contrary, Anushka plays an adequately important role in doing her best to ameliorate the humour. Sanjay Dutt who appears in parts is also fabulous. Now, the screenplay. Magnificent. Every dialogue and the successive is written, furnished and polished with extreme care and prowess. Music by Ankit Tiwari does not differ from the director's previous movies, they are quite decent and go hand in hand with the plot. I went to the theater excited and came out learning something. PK is a movie which entertains you every minute with its creativity in successfully creating an atmosphere of humour and exuberance. PK is out to provoke but not to shock. The film asks questions via its idiot savant protagonist, but does not attempt to deliver facile, absolute answers. And that makes it all the more effective. PK is an adventure which will make you laugh heartily, make you feel heart rended and make you learn to let go, simultaneously promulgating a message. PK is something i would describe, as an emotional roller-coaster. PK is an experience of a life time.

If you have people with orthodox thinking in your proximity or people who are led to blind beliefs of religious drama or are puritanical, PK is just the movie for them. For others, this goes without saying, a must watch.

My rating - "An emotional masterpiece" Traditional rating - 9.5/10.

Interstellar
(2014)

Outstanding, amazing, and definitely one of Nolan's masterpieces.
"Mankind was born on Earth. It was never meant to die here."

Resources? Exhausted, atmosphere? Polluted, environment? Filled with dust storms. Interstellar begins with mankind having overexploited the resources and the only hope of survival left is to find a new planet supporting life. Our hero here is Cooper, Matthew McConaughey, an ex astronaut, a dedicated family man and the one who sets out being the most important element of the plot. Sometime into the movie, you'll find yourself excited, sometime more, you feel sad, further in, you feel stupefied. Interstellar entangles you into a mire of an emotion roller-coaster and simultaneously, it doesn't break itself up in the process by jumping between its aspects rather it presents to you one detail at a time crafted with finesse.

Hey, do you remember that music in the movie which was stifling it the whole time? No? Me neither. Interstellar increases your sensitivity to experience the movie with greater impact as it evolves into a crescendo with Hans Zimmer, music composer of The Dark Knight movies and Inception, filling in each moment of the movie with spirit, sadness, happiness and epicness. The music in Interstellar is phenomenal, powerful and is one of the biggest contributors to the laud.

Interstellar's great aspects :- Cast delivers exemplary acting. Exceptional music by Hans Zimmer. Masterful direction by Nolan. Outstanding script, and amazing dialogue expatiation. Plot keeps you on the edge of your seat throughout. Visually alluring, ravishing and makes the journey through space highly memorable.

Interstellar's not so great aspects :- Movie cliché has its role.

While Stanley Kubrick inspired art with his A Space Odyssey, Nolan leaves the audience awestruck and inspired as the credits roll in. Interstellar doesn't just stop at winning hearts with its sci fi splendour, it also offers a groundbreaking story. Interstellar is not just any movie you walk in, watch and forget. It is an experience, a classic, a masterpiece! And all in all, a cinematic adventure.

My Rating - "Must watch" Traditional Rating - 10 on 10.

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag
(2013)

An excellent and inspiring movie, beautifully portrayed. :')
I'm just astonished and really shocked at the direction. If you want an epic direction which is truly touching and inspiring at every damn point, Rakeysh Mehra is definitely gonna give you that. If you're thinking that the length of the movie is too long, it's certainly isn't. The movie never, ever ceases to bore you and becomes the point of interest for the whole damn three freaking hours. The movie revolves around the hard work, horrors and happiness of Milkha Singh which is totally inspiring with it's bliss of charm. It starts off a bit slow but do not worry, it offers you more than what you're paying for, it just gives you those feels and even brings your tears into reality at some points. The movie GIVES you what you exactly want. It entertains as much as a inspiring movie can and takes the level of touching to a stupendous different level. Portraying Milkha Singh's troubles, struggles, achievements and his sheer desire and zeal to break the world record and become the top athlete, has been brilliantly done by the director. Farhan's physical training and his hard work are beautifully and remarkable displayed which absorbs you and lets you feel the deep and intense emotions. Some of the scenes are thoroughly moving and give you goosebumps which make you feel like you're watching one of the best Bollywood movies ever. The desire of Milkha Singh to eat, to run, to love, to win, for his country, family and his love has been portrayed excellently.

Overall, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag is one of the best movies ever made in Bollywood and if you're missing on this one, you'll regret your whole life. The movie delivers the story, pace and the inspiration in it's own excellent and different way which cease to capture your heart.

My Rating - 10/10.
