Alive and Kicking
(1958)

Just lovely
In an age when most movies are noisy, violent, oversexed, bloody and generally don't do much to provide an enjoyable experience, this old black and white one is gold. No violence, funny acting, memorable characters and a simple plot that keeps you rooting for the people in it. A very enjoyable hour and a half well spent, leaving me with a smile on my face.

Greenfingers
(2000)

Unmissable!
What a jewel of a movie. It's 20 years old and I only just came across it. Why??!! So much junk passes across our tv screens and movie theatres and this was filed away somewhere? No endless repeats and sequels, like with so many undeserving movies? It's a crime. This movie is sweet and funny and poignant and moving and you just have to see it. The storyline is thought provoking and the acting is brilliant, by each and every one of the characters. You will want to watch it more than once.

Hoodwinked Too! Hood vs. Evil
(2011)

Rather disappointing
A very messy and complicated storyline, with none of the clever wit and puns of the first movie. The story jumps from one happening to the next, most times without much cohesion. It seems it is all about gimmicks and stunts and now, a few hours after seeing it, I couldn't tell you what it is really about. There are precious few of the clever references that were in the first movie to kids stories or nursery rhymes, the type that only adults get. The goat, who was so funny, is now thrown in a few times, without a connection to the story, and him being squashed by something falling on him, is just not funny. Hansel and Gretel turning out to be the villains is a direct copy of the bunny in the first movie. Some of the dialogue is incomprehensible because of the speed of talking. Overall, not funny, far-fetched and quite boring.

How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World
(2019)

Somewhat underwhelmed
If you saw the first movie in the series, you will know it was absolutely brilliant and fantastic. One of those you can see several times and still want to see it again. A definite 10. If you saw the second movie, you will know that too was pretty fantastic. Bit less depth in the emotions, but a very good storyline and the multitude and variety of dragons was amazing. Worth an 8 or 9. I find this third movie a bit different. Reading the summary of the storyline, I was expected quite a bit of emotion surrounding the maturing of Hiccup, but there wasn't much there. Toothless was quite convincing in the change of his focus to a mate instead of Hiccup. The battle scenes were at times very noisy, confusing and hard to tell who were the good or the bad guys. Here again, lots of dragons in flight at one go, but not much time to have a good look at any of them, apart from the main ones. I found none of the main characters and dragons to provide the same laugh-out-loud moments as in the first movie, with a few exceptions here and there. The lights and sceneries with light were very magical, almost Christmassy. The end of the movie presented a nice surprise and happy end, all without a lot of special effects. Glad I have seen it, but to me, this is indeed a movie that says goodbye to Hiccup, the other villagers and the dragons. Another sequel would be very farfetched. A low 7.

A Teacher's Obsession
(2015)

No need for this
Don't bother watching this movie. We see enough of this stuff on our tv screens every time the news is on, or whenever another warped series starts, or whenever there is another court case about this type of stuff. Giving it one start, but that's way too much.

Despicable Me 3
(2017)

Entertaining
This sequel is nice enough, but it does not have the same standard as 1 and 2. It feels like the writers felt they needed a number of sub-plots to make it appealing, and in my view, there are too many. Too many gadgets and weird and wonderful inventions too. You almost lose track of the main story. The whole thing feels too full and noisy and overwhelming. Still, nice enough and kids will no doubt love it, although I didn't hear as many lol's as during 1 and 2.

Das Ding
(1978)

Edge of your seat movie
I saw this movie in 1979 while on holiday in Germany. It was extremely good. There were a few moments when I had to leave the room because the suspense was just about too much. I always hoped it would be shown on TV in my native Holland. Then one day, it was, only it was on the evening of the day I emigrated to New Zealand. So that didn't quite work out. I've always kept my eyes open for it, but never seen it again. If you come across it, watch it, preferably in German. Great actors, a good unsuspected ending, no boring bits, a total must-see.

Lion
(2016)

Stunning
I saw this movie just now. It is absolutely beautiful, stunning, brilliant. There are moments when it doesn't move very fast - we're used to fast-moving these days, aren't we - but that only adds to the feeling of time that passes in the course of the actual story that the movie is based on, and of the distances in India. The acting is superb, the Indian actors are amazing. If you are in doubt whether or not to see it: go see it, now! And bring a hankie....

Minions
(2015)

Not Sandra Bullock's best
Really funny movie. Lots of little quirky links to other movies, well-known music, famous people. You'd have to see it a few times to catch them all. I was somewhat disappointed at how the director chose to use Sandra Bullock's voice. I didn't find the character of Scarlett Overkill frightening enough, and as a result Sandra Bullock's voice was somewhat plain, there wasn't much sweetness versus angryness/threat in the voice, like you find with other movie villains. Scarlet Overkill's plans for the crown were crazy, but that didn't really come out. Nevertheless, I think I'll need to go again sometime. There is so much funniness in this movie.
