All the Light We Cannot See
(2023)

Cartoonish Nazis
Great premise and terrible execution. Once you seriously know WWII history, many movies/series lose any sense. This is one of those.

In Nazy occupied countries it was a crime to listen to foreign radio specially from BBC. The heroin would have certainly faced death penalty, but not the German radio operator when he was growing up. At worst he would have his radio destroyed. Nazis ,on the other part, treated very well their geniuses if they weren't Jews.

You can swallow that part of the story. But the Germans. This miniseries wasn't a comic nor did intend to make fun of the Reich. But this is the effect.

At each point where a German officer or soldier appears it looks like he is a clone of the first one. It's repeat and repeat. All brutish, coleric, screamers and stupid.

A lazy screenwriter? Or the novel is just as bad? I have no idea. I almost finished the miniseries but I was rolling my eyes all the time. No worth wasting my time after half of third episode.

Robin Hood
(2018)

The worse Robin Hood
Robin Hood is a inmemorial tale. A universal story that doesn't require too much introduction. This facilitates the job of screen writers and directors that have the basic material to have a good movie.

But this one is not even a decent movie. Lost are the initial distrust, final thief Friendship and Robin struggle to gain the trust of others. Bad FXs, non sense story and bad acting. The perfect cocktail to get the worse Robin Hood version I've seen. No wonder it bombed.

El aviso
(2018)

Interesting final twist
A little bit slow and jumps in the story line that break the flow, but decent movie with good photography. Contrary to what critics say is no terrible.

Mythica: A Quest for Heroes
(2014)

A barely passable movie
Let's say you are bored to death and there isn't anything good on theaters, Netflix, Amazon, HBO, etc. Then, you watch this movie to kill your time.

It's not a terrible movie, not a good one either. The low budget shows and the regular acting too. I give it 6 stars for the effort, but I won't see any of the sequels.

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock
(1984)

Why fans did not like it
The Search for Spock is the third movie of the series and the second part of the trilogy started by The Wrath of Khan and ended with the Voyage Home. Although the movie stands on its own (if you're familiar with Star Trek of course) the viewer is recommended to watch them in that order. After thirty years the effects show their age, but it should be remembered that ILM (still one of the best in special effects) were behind this movie, so this was not a second level house making FX as in Star Trek V.

Even though the movie is called The Search for Spock, this movie is more an exploration of Kirk search for sense in life and grief facing after the Enterprise crew struggles with Khan. As such the movie does not deal too much with new discovery adventures.

Gone are under the sleeve tricks that always saved the day; something that the original series always presented successfully. This is something that furious fans decry, but the movie should be seen for what really is, an exploration of friendship and decision making under extreme circumstances.

Nimoy pays good tribute to the series and respects the series canon. Star Trek III gives good time to other Starfleet crews showing the regular decision making of Starfleet. The pace slowly growths to present the final encounter between Kirk and his Klingon nemesis. Christopher Lloyd cast seemed odd, but his characterization of Kruge as a nationalistic and radical Klingon is fair. The familiar characters of the Enterprise crew return to this movie, and the actors characterization is more mature but they do not add new information to characters lives.

Shatner is at his best here and he convincingly depicts the involved drama and his will to not surrender after all seems lost. Kirk has always been depicted as someone who is always cheating, but Kirk does not have many cards to play and the third act of the movie presents a losing situation where the cost to pay will be high no matter the chosen option. Therefore, the movie is sad and dramatic, and in spite of the hopeful ending this was new territory to traditional Trekkies.

Dante 01
(2008)

A movie that was half finished
I expected to watch this movie for a long time. It is not easy always to get access to French or other non English speaking movies. I knew about the bad comments but the director previous work convinced me of this one.

The story is interesting and the idea of a possible messiah in a jail is very compelling. The main character never talks too much and you never know exactly what was in his past. That is a good ingredient that several westerns exploited very well.

The beginning promises a psychological thriller in space like Moon from Duncan Jones or the creation of a religious cult like the one existing in Alien 3. Unfortunately we don't get any or that, only the promise and the glimpses of what it could have been.

The end is confusing to say the least and the director appeared to rush to end the movie. Some of the news in the trivia section may explain why this movie appears to be an unfinished work. Cutting the budget in half changes whatever the director had originally in mind. That is a shame because the movie had potential.

Hell
(2011)

Worth watching
This is a German contribution to the long list of dystopian movies around. Although what causes so much desolation is evident, it is unknown the exact reason for a changed world.

Do not expect special effects, lasers cutting flesh or big dramas. There are not zombies or aliens around that prey on humans, but still the name Hell is also an allegory to human behavior (but apparently that wasn't the director intention). The story is not original but it is simple and straight, and the acting is mostly convincing.

Unfortunately after a suspenseful beginning the pace wanes and the story gets very predictable. Contrary to similar movies, Hell is probably too short and it could have a little more development. For those who love the genre they will find a decent movie, where normal people get stranded in unusual circumstances and never act as heroes that save the world.

Lockout
(2012)

Good entertainment
This movie has nothing special and it does not pretend to be so. And that's a good thing. Guy Pearce plays well the irreverent "Snow" and he made the film an enjoyable ride. Maggie Grace and Pearce had a good chemistry here. Everything is predictable in this movie but watch it and you will have a couple of hours of good fun and action.

A drawback is that the "bad guys" are plane and don't have any past. However, this can be expected when there are not pretensions. Some of the FX look more like a video game, and given the relatively low budget ($20 million according to Box Office Mojo) nothing like Star Wars is here.
