Honk for Jesus. Save Your Soul.
(2022)

Harsh Truths about the Modern Church
Regina Hall and Sterling K Brown are a great duo in this film. Both are hilarious when needed and add emotional depth when needed. The documentary style of it takes some getting used to... maybe for budget reasons. There are times where I wish more happened. The story felt unfinished and there was no real character arcs in my opinion but I guess thats a real depiction of life because most preachers who find themselves in this type of predicament usually dont learn. I enjoyed what was given overall. I laughed out loud so many times. Regina is great in this. An acquired taste for some. Entertaining for others.

Mortal Kombat
(2021)

Not Perfect But Still Impressive
This movie obviously has it's flaws. The writing is the worst part. However, this movie was an extremely fun watch that set a good foundation for an entire franchise in the future.

Opening scene is beautiful. Characters like Sub Zero, Kano, Jax, Kung Lao and Sonya definitely steal the show. Besides the writing, the character of Cole Young is a hot mess. Just a complete waste of screen time. Get rid of him.

Overall, I had a great time watching. The fighting, the effects, the fan service made it an enjoyable watch and I'm anxious for a sequel and for films beyond it. I am confident that with a bigger budget, a better writing team and a new director that can pull more compelling acting out of the actors, the movie will elevate itself even higher.

Crazy Rich Asians
(2018)

Solid, Fun Rom-Com That Whose Potential Isnt Fully Realized
I was super excited for this movie. Not just because I loved the book but because I know wealth in Asian culture is super exaggerated and over the top, so seeing it on screen in a crass, comedic way made me anxious to see it. The cast was perfectly chosen from the legendary Michelle Yeoh and the upcoming Constance Wu, whose potential as a leading lady is undebatable. But also a lot of new up-and-comers like Awkwafina and Henry Goulding.

The film was visually stunning. Singapore is beautiful. The fashion was amazing and the pacing of the story was good but I'm afraid the film suffers in aspects of the writing and directing. The story and characters could have went much more in depth. The leading couple's chemistry wasnt fully realized. The Mother's disdain for Rachel wasnt really focused until the very end but it was too quick. The film was needed and I'm glad it was made but I'm not opposed to mixing up the behind-the-scenes teams if it means we will get a more well rounded cast of characters and a more engaging story.

Of course, romantic comedies are an acquired taste so if they're not for you, that's okay. But if you a love them like me you will still enjoy this film because its a fun ride, has some great laughs at times and is definitely rewatchable. Hopefully the film's success will warrant a sequel and all that didnt happen in the first one can be explored in the second!

White Girl
(2016)

Executed Well But Makes You Feel Terrible
I continues seeing this film in my suggestions list on Netflix but kept skipping over it because I wasn't interested in watching a film about a white girl getting high, drunk and having sex for two hours. But I finally decided to give it a chance, and althought a lot of the film was executed well... the film was exactly what I thought it was.

The lead actress was good and the supporting cast did good as well but the story was so depressing and didnt really go anywhere until the last ten minutes. The ending was unexpected but I felt like that should have happened in the middle because it ended so abruptly.

I hate that all of her bad decisions didnt effect her in anyway, everything effected her boyfriend and that's what upset me the most. Despite being a drug dealer, Blue's life was pretty mellow without her. All of her habits and hang ups is what caused his life to spiral out of control. She did all these unforgivable things but faces no consequences. But Blue... his life was over all because of her. That was very cruel ans depressing on the writer's part.

All in all, the movie went nowhere. It introduced all these story elements that would have made for an intense, engaging ride but the writer/director was more interested in showing the main character's party life. It was like a long, emo music video! The techincal aspects of the film were cool but overall... a waste of time!

Beautiful Film That Tackles LGBT themes with an African Lense
I was just searching through Netflix trying to find a film to watch, specifically an LGBT film. I was suprised when I read the brief description that it was set in South Africa. Xhosa is the language they spokr in Black Panther so I was even more intrigued.

I thought the story was beautiful. The main character Xolani is a "caregiver" aiding a young man into Manhood yet he's still struggling with his own manhood because he hasnt fully accepted his sexuality or confronted the toxic relationship he has with childhood friend, Vija. Having the backdrop br about a sacred Xhosa tradition of manhood helped the story tremendously. Combatting old ways/tradition with more progressive/tolerant views for the present day.

I thought the acting was good and it was written very well. The way the story progressed had me intrigued from beginning to end. The cinematography was BEAUTIFUL, but when your locations are in Africa i expected nothing less. Overall, it was refreshing to see an LGBT story set in a foreign country where I didnt even think these types of films existed. A must watch!

Girls Trip
(2017)

Hilarious from beginning to end!
I am not one to go to the theater to see a comedy. I prefer big budget Hollywood blockbusters, science fiction, etc. but I love all Jada, Queen, and Regina so I wanted to support (plus I got free tickets to an advanced screening, so why not LOL). Low and behold, I have never laughed so hard at a comedy movie in a very long time and I mean like laugh out loud, ugly noise funny.

While everyone has funny moments throughout the film, the real star of the show is Tiffany Haddish. She delivers the funniest one liners, punchlines, every-lines. She was definitely the highlight.

Now I will say that for most avid movie goers, the plot isn't too original. If you are a comedy lover then you have definitely seen a version of this movie before; four friends who have lost their mojo go on a fun filled weekend where everything that could go wrong does go wrong. Their friendship is tested and their lives are changed forever. Nothing too unique but the characters and the setting make it enjoyable to watch. I thought that the writers choosing such a prestigious event like Essence Festival as the backdrop of the storyline was genius and much needed. It's great that the world can see inside such a huge cultural event for the black community.

Of course, this movie will be donned (by some) as a "black movie" but it's nothing of the sort. Many themes and jokes are definitely inspired by a culture birthed from the black community but the film can be enjoyed by all races and adult ages. I was even surprised when I got the the advanced screening to see so many diverse faces and age groups. Plus the theater erupted in laughter the entire time.

I definitely recommend this film. You won't be disappointed. It's the funnies thing I have seen since Key and Peele's show!

King Arthur: Legend of the Sword
(2017)

A Pleasant Surprise!
The first trailer had me very excited to see this film. The genre is right up my alley. But negative reviews made me think twice and I was just going to wait for it to go to redbox or watch it online (just being honest LOL). But then I started seeing positive reviews and I knew I had to form my opinion. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised and glad I went because I really enjoyed this film from beginning to end. IT's not without it's flaws but will get into that in a minute.

Of course the tale of King Arthur, Excalibur, Camelot, etc. has been told so many times in Hollywood. However, Guy Ritchie's unique storytelling ability made it a fun ride to watch. I will admit that his signature exposition cut-aways got a bit repetitive and lost it's spice around the third time -- meaning, let's devise a plan, while showing the plan happening in order to save time, but explain to the audience what's going on without long monologues, etc -- it's a really cool way to tell a story but he used it a bit too much.

Other than that, the rest of the movie was fairly enjoyable. It went a good pace and had the right amount of fantasy elements while showing Arthur go from a petty scammer to a King. I will say that the castings of Jude Law and Astrid Berges-Frisbey were the more questionable ones for me. They both were pretty monotone and did nothing for their characters. Charlie Hunnam is a decent actor as well. He didn't do anything Oscar worthy but I definitely believed him as Arthur.

The moments when he actually used the sword in battle were my favorites. I think this is the first time in years where someone actually had a clear vision of how to showcase what exactly made Excalibur special. The final battle was a bit underwhelming with all the quick cuts and camera tricks. It was cool to watch from an aesthetic perspective but being just a regular person in the audience, I just wanted to watch them fight.

Overall the movie is an 8 out of 10, but I gave it a 9 because it does NOT deserve a low score at all. It's a really good film that is actually re-watchable. Don't believe the negative viewers, it's a well made film!

Moonlight
(2016)

Pulls You In From The Beginning
This movie is a beautiful piece of art from beginning to end. I was anxious to see this film but still nervous in hopes that the result would match the hype. Some of my expectations were not met (Janelle Monae's role) but those minor kinks do not take away from what the film was made to be.

I was curious as to how they'd tell a full story in three parts but it flowed well and each actor who portrayed the main character, Chiron, added so many nuances.. it just pulled you in. But the actors who stole the show are definitely Naomie Harris as the main character's Mother and Ashton Sanders who played the teenager version of the main character. Both commanded the screen in every scene they were in. On the surface, Naomie's character is despicable but she brought such heart that it made you feel for her. Ashton's version of Chiron was a great journey to watch. I was rooting for him the entire time. But I must point out that the entire cast was awesome.

Well written, well paced. The visuals. The music. I was blown away and definitely recommend it.

There were some places I wanted the story to go, as far as character interaction in certain areas. I was looking for some memorable monologues or some gritty drama between certain characters but I had to realize that this movie was more about the internal struggle. The subtlety is what made it unique.

X-Men: Apocalypse
(2016)

It's not Bad...but its not Good!
Warning, I will be posting spoilers because I feel I can only review this movie properly by telling talking about everything. So if you don't want spoilers, then please don't read this.

Again...don't read this if you don't want spoilers...

Firstly, the returning cast of McAvoy, Fassbender, Lawrence and Hoult are cool. They don't really have in depth character journeys but they do well with what they were given. Magneto's reasoning for joining Apocalypse was a bit ham fisted. Taking him back to Auschwitz as a way to manipulate him into getting on board with a human annihilation plan didn't make much sense. I know Magneto is ruthless but that's a kind of dramatic. I like how Raven is saving mutants but I don't understand why she doesn't want to be the "poster child" for mutants. Her entire arc in First Class was being a "mutant and proud", after being insecure over her appearance and now she can spread that message but chooses not to. It kind of contradicts her character. There isn't much to say about Beast and Charles, they are good but don't really shine in this movie. Although, it was great seeing McAvoy with the iconic bald head.

I definitely feel like this movie suffered from having too many characters. Singer just couldn't balance it. I feel like you cant bring iconic character to screen and have them be props, or just there for cool effects and action scene. If you want to do that, its best if you make up characters. My point is Psylocke barely has any lines and just makes the weird face throughout the whole movie. I feel like all her "great" moments are in the trailers, so she was underwhelming. It definitely shows that she was a last minute edition to the movie because her character is terribly under developed. Angel is another prop, although his final fight scene with Nightcrawler is pretty dope. Jubilee did not need to be in this movie. She didn't even use her powers. Not ONCE. But Cyclops introduction was good and a great nod to comics/cartoons. Jean Grey was cool and Storm was wasted as always. She did have her accent, however she didn't have much to do and in the final battle just stood around.

Apocalypse I feel was a wasted villain. Since the comics, he's always had a survival of the fittest mentality but I feel like they needed to elaborate more on his reasoning for wanting to destroy the Earth. And like, what's gonna happen after we destroy the world? Secondly, you can't touch a television in the 1980s and have all of the knowledge of the world for the past 5000 years. Maybe now, with he internet but in the 80s....definitely not, that was stupid. I think this was a wasted villain and the final battle was a bit underwhelming, minus some cool visual moments. I, also, am wondering what would make Mystique think that she could take down Apocalypse? Weird.

I know it seems like I'm ragging on the movie, it definitely had some cool, interesting, funny moments but I feel like the cons outweigh the pros. Quicksilver's scene definitely tops the one from DOFP. But I thought it was so convenient for him to arrive at the school at the moment Apocalypse was destroying the mansion. Also, why the hell did they kill Havok. After, three movies they just didn't let him be great. Total was of a character.

This movie is not a bad movie. Some of the critics are definitely being dramatic, but I feel like this film suffers from trying to top itself and rival other superhero franchises like Superman and Civil War. I'm glad that it contains a lot more action than previous X-Men movies and I'm glad that Fox is trying to embrace the science fiction aspect of these stories, but it just falls short to me. I do have a lot more complaints but I will keep those to myself. Of course, I will never tell anyone to not see a movie. I think you should see for yourself to form your own opinion, this review is just my personal experience in words.

Anyone who gives this movie a 1 is just being dramatic and knit picking. But anyone who rates this movie a 10 is just trying to battle the terrible reviewers instead of being realistic and honest.

Lastly, I don't want the X-Men to go back to Marvel (as great as that would be), I think the X- Men should stay it's own universe. However, I do think the franchise suffers because of the creatives that handle bringing it to life. Kinberg and Singer should just leave this franchise alone and allow some fresh hands/eyes to take these movies to the next level. Even with DOFP erasing some continuity issues, they just bring more issues into the franchise that make your head twirl.

OMG....last thing, i promise. The wolverine sequence was cool and fun to watch. But it just wasn't needed at all. That entire scene should have been the post credits. Speaking of post credits, it's nice to know that Mister Sinister exists in this universe. I guess I'm anxious to see which movie he will be a villain in; Deadpool sequel, New Mutants or the next X-men film.

Captain America: Civil War
(2016)

Russos Brothers are Amazing
Like many, I was excited for this movie. After twelve films, I kind of know what Marvel is giving me and that's why I keep coming back. But, despite my excitement, I was getting anxious to find out if the quality met the hype. It exceeded every expectation. From beginning to end, the movie is very engaging and I think I was more invested because I've seen every movie so I have seen everything unfold to this point.

This is definitely a Captain America film because it's all connected to him but it also feels like a mini-Avengers film and even duals as a Iron Man 4 film, simply because everyone has a time to shine. No one is really in there just to fill space.

I am Team Cap all the way but part of me definitely understood Team Iron Man. You really flip flop because you understand each side's motivation.

Black Panther is the star of this though. He was handled perfectly. People who aren't familiar with him are only getting the surface level amount of what he's capable of in this movie, but he;s relentless, regal and steals every scene he is in. Spider-Man comes in second. He is the Spider-Man I have always wanted. I was a fan of Andrew Garfield's portrayal but Tom Holland is definitely superior in this and his abilities are dope. Ant-Man will surprised many people. I thought Team Iron Man was the superior team but Ant-Man is definitely someone you want on your team.

Overall, the Russo Brother know exactly how to handle a superhero film. They know how to balance every element needed to make it solid and re-watchable. Many have an issue with the villain, but I didn't. Underused but still drove the plot forward.

Airport scene is the best superhero action sequence I have ever witness. The overkill with TV spots and clips don't even do it justice. Go see this film!

The Huntsman: Winter's War
(2016)

A Worthy Sequel
Before I say anything, I must say that this film is definitely for those who enjoyed the first movie despite its many flaws (Kristen Stewart). If you haven't seen Snow White and The Huntsman, I suggest you do because some plot points and character interactions may go over your head.

Now for the movie itself, overall it is 100% a love story. So if you're going in expecting a whole bunch of Lord Of The rings type fight scenes you will be disappointed. Once you accept that fact, you can enjoy this movie. The story is pretty surface level. There were times where I really wanted them to delve deeper into certain aspects of a character's life, especially Freye The Ice Queen, just so I can be a little more connected to her transformation from good to evil. But Emily Blunt's performance was Grade A. She's very ruthless and unapologetic on her views but I wish we could have actually SEEN her going to battle with other kingdoms. I wish they would have shown her Huntsman in their element, conquering armies, etc. but we didn't. Some of the subject matter deserved a bigger world but like I said, it's a love story FIRST and everything else afterward.

Charlize Theron didn't get as much screen time as I had hoped because she was soooooo good in the first one but I was okay with that.

All the visuals in this movie are beautiful. The costumes, the special effects are amazing. I was happy that they kind of explored the world a little bit more. Even though the title is The Huntsman, I felt that this was more Freya's movie than Chris' or Jessica Chastain. I'm not sure what else to say...it's not a bad movie, it just wont blow you away. It will definitely be enjoyed more by those who were fans of the first one (as I stated earlier). IT did what it was supposed to do and capitalized off of people's love of villains (Voldemort, Miranda Priestley, Ravenna, Maleficent, etc.)

Barbershop: The Next Cut
(2016)

Enjoyed it more than I thought
I am never a fan of comedy movies having sequels and three-quels, very few can pull it off and when I saw the first trailer for this I wasn't excited at all. I ended up seeing this movie out of default. I wanted to see Jungle Book (but my friend wanted to take his boyfriend to see it so this was the only option LOL). I, pretty much, had low expectations going. I was very intrigued all the way through. About an hour in, I whispered to my friend "ummm...this is actually a really good movie."

Of course, like most films, it's not without its flaws but those are more subjective based on the individual's taste. But its nothing that cant be forgiven. There are some corny parts and some of the subject matter was a bit surface level but when it's a family film, I know that there not gonna go to in depth into politics, cheating, gang violence, etc.

What I enjoyed the most about it, is that there was an ongoing story line outside of the theme of the Barbershop. Everyone involved got a chance to shine and you didn't feel like many of the characters were just there. A lot of the social topics that were tackled in each Barbershop scene was very surface level (which is one flaw that I stated before) but it kind of had to be because if you delved deeper than it would have turned into the writers/director trying to force their own opinion on the audience. But it was meant to just open the door for the conversation to continue.

The comedy did what it was supposed to do. There were many corny parts, where I felt like the actors were reaching and there were some parts where laughed out loud.

My main gripe was with Nicki Minaj's character. She just played herself. She wasn't bad, it's just I'd be more impressed with her if she took a role that was the complete opposite of her hand as an artist.

All in all, I would definitely recommend this film to anyone. It's a fun, family film that is 100% enjoyable if you watch it with no expectations.

Insurgent
(2015)

Pleasantly Surprised
Is it just me or is anyone else getting annoyed with all these studios trying to adapt book series for the dollars. Harry Potter was awesome. Twilight was...meh. Then they attempted to do The Host and that other movie with Lily Collins that was just horrid. So when Divergent came out I just couldn't take it. But I saw it and enjoyed it. The plot was very intriguing, despite Shailene Woodley. I don't know what it is but I feel like Hollywood is trying to make her the new Jennifer Lawrence and I don't endorse that idea.

But....I had to see the sequel and let me say, this movie does not disappoint. I have never read the books and don't follow the blogs or anything and the plot is so interesting, I'm never sure where it's going to go so I was on the edge or my seat the entire. And dare I say it, Shailene Woodley has made a fan out of me because she shines in this movie. She is very convincing when she's vulnerable and emotional but equally as good when she has to be a tough fighter. The haircut grew on me as well.

I'm certain that fans of the book will enjoy this film adaption but I think the general audience will enjoy it just as much. They're also not selfish with the action. I didn't realize how much action would be in this movie but was pleasantly surprised and eager to see more. The ending was definitely not something I expected and because of how it ended, I'm curious as to where the next two installments will go, I have an idea because Four's mother seems like a self-serving, deceitful beotch.

Overall, without giving too much away, this movie will be a treat for everyone who loves science fiction that's not cheesy or predictable. the relationship between Tris and Four is not overdone or cheesy either. It's believable and doesn't annoy like a Bella, Edward and Jacob love triangle would. I would 100% recommend this movie to anybody. You won't be disappointed 4DX is not a bad way to watch a movie. I prefer the regular way and on a good day, 3D will suffice but my friend insisted we see it in 4DX and it added a special something to the overall experience.

Fast & Furious 7
(2015)

Enjoyable, But Didn't Live Up To The Hype
We all know that this franchise has a faithful following that has been following this movie since the beginning. I am one of those people. Of course I thought the 4th installment would be the last one, so of course, I was a little annoyed when I heard about Fast Five. Then I was shocked to see the new direction this franchise was going. Fast 6 was no different. It was randomly good and I was surprised at how much I enjoyed. Justin Lin did a good job with the direction he took this franchise. Then, James Wan happened. I'm not saying he's a bad director, but I think he should stick to horror...at least, for now.

While, Furious 7 is huge in spectacle, it lacks in every other area. From beginning to end, the action was Big and Grand. I was on the edge of my seat, (sidenote: Tony Jaa is so amazing) but everything else was just a miss for me. I respect the director and cast for trying to add a layer of emotion to the film but it seemed so forced. The scenes where Michelle Rodriguez or Jordana Brewster had to be vulnerable and cry just made me cringe in my seat. Then that ending scene with Vin and Michelle made me laugh out loud at how cheesy it was. And unfortunately, the banter between Tyrese and Ludicrous was not funny at all to me. It's usually one of the things I look forward to but this time, it was a yawn fest. It's also obvious that the director is a fan of The Rock from the WWF days, which would explain all the terrible one liners Dwayne Johnson was expected to deliver. I'm surprised he didn't bust out laughing in every take. Lastly, Jason Statham was a very weak villain. I understand wanting to get revenge for the people who killed your brother, but his motive still felt empty.

Like I said earlier, the action was great. Hand to hand combat, great. Car scenes, etc. all great but in this day and age, you cant expect for audiences to be satisfied just because the spectacle is big. You need a solid script and actors who can deliver on those emotional scenes that add weight to the story and gets the audience more invested.

This film was definitely "For Paul". I hate to say it, but if it wasn't for Paul's untimely death, I don't think this film would be getting as much attention as it is.

Coming off the of high success of Fast Five and Six, this movie had the opportunity to keep the flame lit but that fire went out when the studio decided to trade in Justin Lin for James Wan. I know a lot of people won't agree with me, but this film just didn't live up to the hype and I wish I had waited to catch it on Redbox. Insurgent is a much better film than this and I hate Shailene Woodley.

I, Frankenstein
(2014)

Surprisingly enjoyed this more than I thought.
First off I'd like to say that I'm getting tired of all the wannabe filmmakers coming on IMDb and giving movie reviews based off of standards that they can't even uphold in their own independent, straight to youtube and vimeo short films. So jut cut it out. You're not an expert on film if you have no REAL experience on how big budget films get made and the logistics that go into production and dealing with the big wigs at the top. Secondly, I don't care about your review containing things you would have done differently if YOU were the directed because you weren't and probably never will be.

Now let's get to this movie...

Because of bad reviews and low scores I told myself that I wasn't going to see this movie. The trailer looked pretty cool and I knew what I was going to see, if I did, but I didn't and after watching this movie, I immediately regretted that decision. This movie is not a horror or a psychological thriller, it's a science fiction action flick. These type of movies don't need an overly complicated plot or lots of twists and turns; all it needs is solid acting, a solid script, and great action sequences. That is what I go see these movies for and that's what I was given.

Aaron Eckhart gave a solid performance, although I'm growing a bit weary of all these heroes having to have a raspy voice, it's getting corny now (i.e. Blade, Wolverine, Batman, etc.) I thought the interpretation of the gargoyles was cool. They were on the "good" side but made some choices that weren't always "God-like" if that makes sense. The demons looks was very Van Helsing but I didn't care at all. They were demons.

The action sequences is what I cared about mostly and they delivered for me. I kind of enjoyed the solo fight scenes with Frankenstein and the demons, rather than the big Epic battles between the Gargoyle and Demons because they were cut too short. But I'm sure making those sequences any longer would have caused for more money that the budget probably couldn't sacrifice.

In conclusion, this is a solid action flick to watch with your buddies on a Friday night or wherever. It's not a bad movie and does what it was supposed to do, entertain. I would recommend it to any faithful watchers of sci-fi, action flicks.

White Frog
(2012)

Tried To Hard
I actually like Boo Boo Stewart but I didn't like him in this. I understood what the director was trying to do but it seems like he got caught up in trying to create a really dramatic indie film that he didn't know what kind of story he wanted to tell. I realize that each movie has a main plot and many subplots but I had a hard time trying to figure out what the main plot actually was. Some areas of the movie would explore certain topics but then would just skip over them for the rest of the movie. Other points were just unrealistic in my opinion.

I understand the BooBoo Stewart's character has Asperger Syndrome but it seemed like he was just being shy the whole time. Maybe I'm just used to seeing Max Burkholder play a child with asperger's on the TV show "Parenthood" that Boo Boo's portrayal was a bit laughable to me. I didn't empathize, I was just really uncomfortable. Anyways, like I said I was confused about what the movie wanted to be about. Was it about the main character coming to terms with trying to live with his condition? Was it about teen boys struggle to be honest with their families about their sexuality? Was it about a young boy breaking free of the expectations of his religious and strict parents? Was it about a family coming to terms with their son's sudden death? Was it about a struggling art center for kids staying afloat when there main contributor dies? Funny thing about it, this movie was about all these things and it made the movie fill so diluted and rushed.

I will give a huge kudos to Joan Chen for her performance. She had certain scenes that really touched my heart and I enjoyed her portrayal. I wish there would have been more of build up so I could invest in the characters more. I thought the way the three friends found out that the two guys were gay lovers was so whack and laughable. The ending speech Boo Boo gave at the end was corny and tried too hard to be metaphorically deep. I didn't understand the father's relationship with his wife or kids or his motivation for being an ass hole. I hate when people use religion as a scapegoat as an excuse to not be more creative with homophobic topics as well. Also, that seen between Boo Boo and the homeless people was so unrealistic, I was shocked it even made it in the movie.

All in all, this movie had more flaws than I could stand. I watched the whole movie and just wasn't impressed and wanted that last hour back. The director tried to hard to make an emotionally dramatic movie that he forgot to tell a good story, which is usually what a film is supposed to be. Stop worrying about winning film festivals, winning awards and etc. Just tell a good story and everything else will come.

Carrie
(2013)

I'm on the fence with this fence!
I definitely can appreciate the original film. Sissy Spacek was amazing as Carrie but I think the remake is definitely better. The performances were definitely elevated, the story was explored more and characters were more defined but I'm still on the fence as to how much I liked this film.

First and foremost, Julianne Moore is so creepy in this film. She was cast perfectly and every time she was in a scene, she commanded the screen. That scene at the laundry mat....oh yes!!! Chloe Grace Moretz is an awesome actress to still be so young in the game. Even when she's not speaking, her expressions and reactions are awesome. I just love her. Also, now that technology has evolved, the effects in the movie were great. It was awesome seeing them let 'Carrie' do more with her powers and explore more of those iconic events that happened in the original. Also, the actress that played the teacher was awesome as well. I wish there were more teachers like her character.

Even though this movie had some good parts, it also had it's flaws. I'm not very big on remakes and reboots. I feel like if you do a remake, don't just shoot it the same way, add some parts and make it your own. There were some new parts in it but I just wanted more from the film. I left feeling kind of empty. I enjoyed everything Kimberly Pierce attempted, but she should have took farther. The climax was too short. This was an opportunity to make the ending scenes at the prom, on the street and at the house more epic and more adrenaline but it was just the same scenes with cooler effects. Nice to look at but I've seen it before. Audiences want more from films like these. You can't build up to this climactic scene and then only allow it to be fifteen to twenty minutes.

Lastly, THIS IS NOT A HORROR FILM! I don't even know why the original movie is considered a horror because nothing about the movie is scary. I have never been scared. It's just suspenseful. If anyone gets scared by the original or the remake, you're a weirdo.

Would I recommend it? Yes but only if you are a fan of the book and original movie because you will definitely appreciate the enhancements and the performances from the actors. But, NO, if you're expecting a horror!

A Guilty Pleasure
East Los High is like Degrassi meets Mean girls. I was so enthralled in seeing what would happen next that I watched the entire 1st season in two days. I really enjoyed it especially seeing an all Latino cast command the screen. It's very seldom you see other ethnic groups make shows like this but I really enjoyed it.

My only inhibition with the last ten, or so, episodes is that it stopped being about high school drama or more of a crime, gangster film. There were a lot of different modern day, teen issues that could be explored but it's obvious the writers had a soft spot for the character, Maya, played by Alicia Sixtos. She was amazing to watch on film and her entire storyline could have been a series all on it's own with all she had to deal with. I was just disappointed because some characters that were introduced got very little screen time and weren't explored even further.

I was watching expecting to see a funny, scandalous, high school war but everything they did pretty much happened outside of the High School. Overall, it was a good series to watch. If there is a Season 2, I'd prefer for the main characters to all start out in 9th and 10th grade that way they can stick around for more than one season and I would also prefer for the writers to keep it all the issues centered around the high school. If not, don't call is East Los High.

Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.
(2013)

I Could Have Had A V8!
I was actually very disappointed in this show, which is surprising because I love most of Joss Whedon's work. I say most because there are some film and TV shows he's done that I have never seen. Overall, I love his writing style so I was excited for this but it really disappointed me.

Everyone know that pilot is usually the worst and most series get better but I'm still on the fence. I was expecting more from this show but it just hasn't captured me all the way. The cheesy, comedic one liners worked so well in The Avengers but in this show, they're just really cheesy and it makes me cringe.

I've only seen the first two episodes so I'm hoping it gets better after a while. Watching all the Marvel Phase One films, S.H.I.E.L.D. seemed pretty bad ass and cutthroat but this shows just makes them seem weak. I mostly blame Disney and the rating system for the ABC network. Despite the huge following Marvel has, the content is becoming really watered down for the sake of having a TV show fit the PG, _G-13 rating.

Unlike, most I don't have an issue with the effects or anything else because I know a TV series will never have the same budget a Hollywood block buster has, but I'm just not sold yet. I have enjoyed the shows "Arrow" and even the series premiere of "The Tomorrow People" more than Agents of SHIELD and that show is just a huge rip off of other films.

I was hoping that Marvel and Disney would use this show as a platform to introduce some secondary Avengers/Marvel superheroes but so far I've seen nothing. But I guess this is about SHIELD and not the Avengers. Joss Whedon should have took a totally different approach. But I will continue to watch with hopes that it will get better

Baggage Claim
(2013)

It Is What It Is!
I'm a little surprised that this movie has a 3.2 rating on here because it wasn't that bad. I, personally, did not want to see it. I'm a little prejudice against black theater writes who start making movies (i.e. Tyler Perry) but this movie wasn't totally bad. I actually enjoyed it.

I thought the premise was original. a flight attendance using her resources at her airline to encounter exes so they could be her date for her sister's wedding. I mean it has been done before with Debra Messing but I thought the airline aspect was cool. The gems of this movie were definitely Jill Scott and Adam Brody. Without them this movie would have been dullsville but they deliver some very hilarious one lines and the dialogue between both of them delivers some laugh out loud moments they made me forgive a lot of the movies mistakes. Also, Tia Mowry had a small part but her scene was one of the funniest as well.

Now for the bad, Paula Patton really overacted in this. Watching her deliver her lines made me really uncomfortable. If you ask me she did some of her best work in Mission Impossible 4. Whoever her agent is, they need to get her out of playing the same roles in these comedy and romance movie. Jennifer Lewis' monologue at the end was whack. I didn't understand why they introduced her ex named "Curtis" on the plane if she wasn't going to have an interaction with him in the future.

Overall, this movie is pretty predictable. I already knew everything that would happen but I enjoyed watching the story unfold simply for the laughs throughout. I don't want to make it a race thing but it's good to see African American cinema explore other genres of film besides the gangster movies or slave movies. It seems those are the only roles that get created so to say an African American based romantic comedy is very refreshing.

I enjoyed this movie. But I wouldn't suggest for anybody to rush to see it in theaters. Just wait until Redbox.

Enjoyable Martial Arts/Fantasy Film
Thank God for Netflix because if I didn't have an account, I wouldn't have discovered an enjoyable movie. The negative reviews I read just make me roll my eyes and want to punch those users in the face with a bad of rice hahahaha.

Firstly, I'd like to say that it's obvious that different cultures have their own, unique way of telling stories through film. It's evident in America, Europe, Asia, India and more. I took the movie for what it was and enjoyed it very much. It was like X-Men meets Naruto Shippuden meets Dragon Ball Z. I personally love a light weight corny action film. No one watches for the story, we watch to see some dope fighters go at it and if they have superhuman abilities, it just adds more fuel to the fire.

I enjoyed the small twists and turns. The film kept me interested because I was constantly trying to figure out who was being loyal to whom. There were a lot of characters who appeared to be aligned with one side, then the next thing you know they are fighting for another side. It kept me wanting more. I especially loved seeing certain actors on the big screen again after seeing them give great performances in The Matrix and Forbidden Kingdom.

The set design was dope, the acting was cool. I doubt anyone expects an Oscar award winning acting performance in an action film. The costuming dope. Special effects dope and of course the action was amazing to watch from beginning to end.

Want my advice? Don't listen to the ridiculous and immature reviews below me. This movie embodies what the Asian film market enjoy and it works for them. I enjoyed it and would definitely watch it again.

X-Men
(2011)

More Impressive Than I Thought
Anime is not for everyone. The Japanese have a totally different way of approaching entertainment than America does. Whether it's music, fashion, movies, music and even cartoons. I'm not a big Anime fan. I think it's all long winded and they stretch stories out that into 60 episodes that could have been told in 25. I have a few anime cartoons that I love but for the most part I'm not a huge fan but when I heard about Marvel making X-Men into an anime series I was a little anxious to see it. I love everything about the X-Universe so I wanted to support.

Now, I actually like the series. I enjoy it because the same story continues throughout the entire season, unlike in America where it's a different story every episode. The way the storyline is set up helps you connect more with the characters and the plot. There are some inhibitions but no one is ever 100% with every single film or TV show they watch so that's to be expected. Overall, I thought it was done very well. There were a lot of elements to the series that give past X-Men fans something to smile but Madhouse Studios definitely revamped it to appeal to their faithful anime followers. You have mutated monsters, more technology, mutation can get to a level to where it gets deadly without proper control, etc. There are a lot of elements that are refreshing to watch and the action is definitely fun to.

Sometimes I think that adults that watch cartoons seem to forget that these shows are made for kids. The dialogue is going to cheesy and sometimes stupid but it has to be for kids to understand. Some of these reviews are just weird to me. I wonder what people were expecting to get from this. The series pretty much stayed true to it's identity, it's an anime cartoon whose foundation started from the X-Men world. I just took it for what it was and it made me enjoy it more. I even bought the DVD. I definitely would recommend this for people to watch. It's not everyone but if you watch without the expectation that it's going to be like the other X-Men animated series that are American made, you'll enjoy it more.

Man of Steel
(2013)

Am I The Only One That Was Disappointed?
MAN OF STEEL was kind of weak to me. I was so bored! Now the action was dope. A lot of great, ground breaking fight scenes, awesome visual effects, CGI, and imagery used throughout the entire movie but I couldn't really enjoy it because they was just a lack of story. No character development and the flashbacks got annoying after a while. DC Universe just has one- dimensional characters. Superman's story is just a whack one to me. It seemed like his parents were the bad guys in my opinion. You throw away 100,000 years of intergalactic evolution all because Superman's parents wanted to have a baby the "natural way" and now your son is more important than letting General Zod use the Kodex to save an entire population?! I just didn't get it. Maybe my boredom made me miss some key points. The entire film was just so rushed to me. I'm sure most Superman fans will enjoy because it was definitely much better than Superman Returns but as overall film, DC Universe can't touch Marvel on their best day.

I do think that Henry Caville was the best choice to be cast as Clark Kent. He definitely embodies all that Superman is and can be. I definitely believed him. I wouldn't have cast Amy Adams as Lois Lane. Also, how can you have a Superman origins story without introducing Lex Luthor at all! If they make a sequel and use Lex (which you will have to because he's a big part of the entire universe) how are you going to explain his absence in "Man OF Steel" it just makes no damn sense. He wasn't even in a flashback in Superman's childhood. If they decide to change his and Clark's relationship and backstory in the sequel, they will make a lot of Superman fans very, very, very upset. Also, the death of Superman's human father was just so natural to me. You have a son who has super strength, super speed, laser vision, indestructible so why would you tell him not to save the dog during a tornado and you do it yourself. The entire town already knows he has special abilities so that's not really a problem. Yet, you hold up your hand for about six seconds, telling him to not save you, when he could have been in and out in about three seconds. That was so laughable to me and Clark's explanation as to why he didn't was even worse.

If that is how Clark's father died in the actual DC storyline, then no wonder I've never been a fan. Michael Shannon did a great job as General Zod. He was my favorite character. But I do have a secret love for villains with a true purpose.

Disclaimer: no Superhero should ever wear a cape. They're a distraction and so very useless and could possibly get you killed or seriously injured in battle. Example when Superman tried to fly away from the two villains he was fighting in that small town. He almost got away but the Big Dude grabbed his cape and threw him around a bit more, point proved right?! I'm not going to say don't see this movie because the amazing action sequences might cause people to overlook the many flaws in this film, so just go see for yourself. I hope you enjoy it more than I did.

After Earth
(2013)

Is it possible to sue for being tricked into going to see this film?
One time my mom made a pitcher of iced tea. It was the summer and I knew that later in the day it was going to get really hot, so letting the tea chill in the refrigerator was perfect so I could come in the house and have a refreshing beverage. The time came and I poured me a glass, it was nice and cold too. I took a sip and immediately spit it out. There was no sugar or lemon. I never had an experience like that until I saw this movie. Bland, bland, bland. No flavor, no flavor, no flavor.

Now, of course, if you're an A-list actor like Will Smith and you're filthy rich why not make a science fiction movie to help you're up and coming son get better roles and push him into the acting world. That's what parents do, so I'm not mad at that. But I just feel like the movie could have been way better. I don't think it's an acting thing because everyone knows that Will Smith can act and Jaden is good as we've seen in Karate Kid and The Pursuit of Happiness. I believe that when you have a situation where good actors act bad, it's all on the director. Come on people, M. Night Shymalan hasn't had a good movie since The Sixth Sense. When I saw that he was writing and directing this, I just let out a deep sigh.

The film could have been way more epic. An hour and thirty minutes is just not enough time to do every thing that this film could have done. The main storyline about father and son trying to build their relationship after the death of their family member is a good one, but it should have been a subplot to a bigger plot. There were some parts where I was just uncomfortable with the acting and the delivery. There was one part in particular where Jaden's character was running from some creature and he yelled "Leave me alone!" Jaden who are you talking to? Was that phrase in your cadet training? Do the animals speak English or maybe you should try German? When he said that line, it's just confirmed the overall cheesiness of the film and I knew there wasn't a chance in the world that I could take it seriously.

I didn't sense the real danger that we were built up to experience. I think in every movie about being stranded on a deserted island, you encounter some feline creature, a big bird trying to protect her eggs, some poisonous bugs, a waterfall and a very dangerous creature that you better run from because it can kill you. In a nutshell, the movie was very predictable. In any Sci-Fi movie, you have the opportunity to really be creative and come up with some cool concepts and things that the audience has never seen before. It seems as if the filmmakers just settled. IT's definitely a very good idea but overall, not good execution. I didn't see how Earth became a dangerous place for humans, it was just a jungle where some of the animals were a little bigger.

One question, Jaden was wearing a very high tech suit. How come it didn't have anything to help with temperature control? How come the suit didn't have hand coverings to prevent from being bit by that poisonous leech? Why didn't the suit have an oxygen mask? Why did they only have staff? No guns or laser shooters? No shields? I don't know, maybe it was just a prototype. Hahaha okay now I'm being facetious.

Overall, I think it was a good attempt but definitely failed. Terrible choice for a director and the movie could have been more bearable if they cast other actors. If Will wants to bond with his son, they should just go fishing, not make a terrible movie that they're not going to get any profit off of. Save your money.

Scandal
(2012)

Great series. I hope it lasts.
Is it right to write a review based off things I would have done differently if I was the writer of the show? Or should I just write a review based off the content that was presented to me? Yeah, I'm talking to you people that write reviews only because you probably went to film school or are an aspiring or working screenwriter who can never really enjoy a movie/TV show because you're too busy picking it apart. Newsflash, no cinematic project is perfect. They all have their flaws. Even the best films in history have their mistakes but it's about freeing yourself from all logistics and appreciating what's presented to you. Kind of when you go to a restaurant and order food, your plate never actually looks like the picture but it still tastes just as good. Just felt I needed to say that. Not that it matters but it's for my own benefit, haha moving on!

So, why is Scandal just so gosh darn good. I think Kerry Washington was casted perfectly. She has the perfect strength her character needs yet a vulnerable, soft side that makes you like her even more, in my opinion. Of course the Cyrus character is the best one. I swear every episode I think to myself "he's gonna have a heart attack and die from all the BS he deals with from everyone" and Mellie makes me want to slap her but still she is a good, driven character. I, personally, love the show because there are so many cliffhangers. Some things are predictable but the pros definitely outweigh the cons in this situation. At the end of every episode my jaw is literally on the floor and I grow anxious for the next Thursday night.

Now I will say that this show isn't for everyone. Shonda Rhimes definitely should hire more writers as the show continues because she seems to write from a more liberal point of view. You can't have a show about politics with only one type of opinion represented. It would definitely increase the controversy of the show because you have more opinions to elaborate on. I read some reviews from people asking certain questions about the show, but thats why I like the show. It keeps you inquisitive and every question I had is answered later on in the season but with more to uncover, which keeps me coming back.

My biggest inhibition is how every character has to have that dramatic monologue in every episode where they stand up for themselves or their beliefs and deliver their lines really, really, really, really, really, really fast and stern. Doing it a few times through the season is cool but it's done at least two or three times in every episode. When it happens I be like "oh this must be blank's important monologue". It's kind of annoying and I hope the writers improve that but it's definitely not something that will deter me from watching the series.

I would definitely recommend this show but, of course, it's not for everyone. But even if you don't watch it, 8.6 million viewers is not bad for a show that's only been around for a couple years. Enjoy. (Olivia Pope fixed this review!)
