Nope
(2022)

Nope
Pros: + Good acting apart from Keke

Cons:
  • Plot threads aren't tied up
  • Bad CGI
  • Doesn't make any sense

Feels like Peele is just making movies with zero oversight at this point, it's pretty messy.

The Black Phone
(2021)

Good but nothing new here
Maybe I've seen too many horror films but nothing was new here - the cinematography was interesting and added a different vibe but Ty West's most recent 70s horror was braver, this felt a little weak by comparison.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness
(2022)

Pulled the punches
Pros + Good central plot + New characters are effective + Cumberbatch is on form

Cons
  • Limited by its 12A rating
  • More VFX would have been nice - Suicide Squad 2 and Batman look much better than Marvel movies these days
  • Wanda's motivation isn't entirely believable
  • Could've made more of the multiverse setting.

Nightmare Alley
(2021)

Style over substance
Pros + Cooper is a great lead + Memorable supporting cast + Amazing visuals

Cons
  • Characters are very two dimensional
  • Predictable plot, could've done with more complexity like Shutter Island or the Prestige.

Don't Look Up
(2021)

US centric satire
Pros: + Amazing cast + Very relevant with the covid situation + Big budget

Cons:
  • Needed streamlining - Timothee Chalamet and Ariana's plot lines were pointless
  • Very US centric - why are we still pretending US is the global superpower in movies rather than China, etc. Dismissive of other countries in general.

Encounter
(2021)

Don't trust the bad IMDb reviews
Low key sci-fi movies that have more of an emotional plot than a literal one never score well on IMDb, e.g. Arrival, Annihilation etc, and this is one of the best. Never mind the fact people always mark down a minority led cast.

Riz Ahmed is as capitivating as ever, the pacing is spot on, and the supporting cast is A* too. It's not an action blockbuster but it never pretends to be, it keeps you guessing and has a satisfying ending. Exactly the movie anyone would want a streaming service to make that might struggle to get a cinema release.

The Power of the Dog
(2021)

Lolloping Dog
Pros: + Acting is very good on the whole + Great set design and costume + Atmospheric score + Amazing scenery

Cons:
  • Kirsten Dunst's emotional spiral isn't believable
  • Loose ends
  • Abrupt finish.

Spider-Man: No Way Home
(2021)

Fan service at its best
Pros: + Every actor smashes it out of the park + Limited references to Avengers - feels like its own movie + Special effects are on point

Negatives:
  • Didn't want it to end.

Spider-Man: Far from Home
(2019)

Does badly on a rewatch
Rewatching this before the 3rd movie confirms why the Avengers elements ruin the franchise, because they immediately make it feel out of date and not standalone. The movie watcher wants to just care about Spiderman, not the rest of the MCU corporate behemoth.

Nevermind that Spiderman works better as a lower middle class 20 year old, not a teen played by an obvious 23 year old, and written by a 50 year old. It just hits the ear wrong, middle aged people can't write people 30 years younger than them.

Also when you learn the plot twist, it creates huge plot holes when rewatching because it just doesn't add up.

Ghostbusters
(1984)

Has aged well, not badly imo
Pros: + Good mix of action and comedy + Prime Bill Murray + Visual SFX infinitely better than the current CGI we're lumped with

Cons:
  • No real threat, so not as much suspense as there could have been.

House of Gucci
(2021)

An entertaining Gucci advert
Pros + Adam Driver never misses + Lady Gaga also passable + Al Pacino has a few scene stealing moments + Pacing very good, never feels overlong

Cons
  • Jared Leto
  • Jarring brand love, not just Gucci but also Lacoste, Tiffany and even Investcorp
  • Jared Leto
  • Not enough in the movie to explain why characters change heart in their decisions
  • Jared Leto.

Hypnotic
(2021)

Hypnonsense
Pros + Good acting from the detective

Cons
  • Hypnosis doesn't do any of the stuff this movie claims, so it's hard to find any of it scary rather than laughable.

The Manor
(2021)

Old dog, old tricks
Pros: + Good-ish acting

Cons:
  • I called the whole plot from 15 mins, so predictable to say the least
  • Care home unbelievably grim, it would've been more clever to make it seems deceptively nice instead at the start and then show things spiral.

Dune
(2021)

Spicy
Pros: + Solid acting all round + Visuals are amazing, reminiscent of Prometheus + Pacing is spot on + Captures most of the book well + Soundtrack perfect

Cons:
  • The fighting didn't capture the depth it had in the book with the shields, etc
  • Paul's visions had too much Zendaya, not enough of the other parts of his future
  • CG heavy, using more models/physical effects would've been welcome.

The Rental
(2020)

Underrated thriller
This is probably the furthest off the mark I've seen IMDb's rating of a film for some time, 5.7 is way too low for such a well written and paced thriller/horror.

Pros: + Acting is flawless + Tension all the way through + Perfect running time

Cons:
  • None for me.

Venom: Let There Be Carnage
(2021)

Funny, but not enough Carnage
Pros: + More venom = more laughs + Tom Hardy as great as ever

Cons:
  • Could've done more with Carnage, made more of a character out of the voice talking to Woody Harrelson and showed how he handled it differently to Eddie
  • Naome Harris' character felt like an after thought.

There's Someone Inside Your House
(2021)

Funny writing, rubbish plot
Pros: 1. Script is fun 2. Generally good acting 3. Starts off tense

Cons: 1. Ending makes no sense and seems rushed.

The Nest
(2020)

Almost takes itself too seriously
Pros: + Career best performances from the leads + Supporting cast are faultless too + Amazing cinematography + Satisfying finale

Cons:
  • Unsympathetic characters
  • Some scenes look a little ridiculous (the burial and dancing for me in particular)
  • Slightly on the nose in places, e.g. The taxi driver conversation seemed very stagey.

Free Guy
(2021)

The Truman Game
Pros: + Ryan Reynolds brings the wacky energy of Jim Carrey, but in a way that's not cringey in the 2020s + Great premise + Good supporting cast + Great SFX, avoided being too CGI heavy (unlike Ready Player One)

Cons
  • Taika Waititi is awful, aggressively unfunny (and I'm an In the Shadows fan)
  • The YouTuber commentary pulls you out of the film, should've been cut
  • Would've been better as a 15, the games this references are famously violent so it's noticeably lacking in blood/swearing
  • A few script howlers "coding is just 1s and 0s" (no it isn't) etc.

Late Night
(2019)

Needed to be more savage
Pros: + Emma Thompson steals every scene as usual + Good supporting cast + Satisfying storyline

Cons
  • Mindy Kaling is a good comedic actor but can't do pathos
  • For a film so aware of some stereotypes it ironically fell prone to film clichés itself, especially the romance storyline which was Bridget Jones-lite
  • Jokes all felt very PG-13, again ironically like a focus group had filtered out the more "real" ones.

Old
(2021)

Old dog, new tricks - The Shymalanaisence continues
Pros: + Strong acting from most of the cast + Original plot + Thought provoking + Good pacing and ending

Cons:
  • Could've gone further with the idea
  • Spotted ending a mile off.

Nobody
(2021)

John Wick with a sense of humour
Pros:
  • Bob puts in a great performance
  • Balletic action sequences
  • Great pacing

Cons:
  • The vague "russian" mob is an old racist cold war stereotype, can we not think of alternative bad guys please
  • Could've done with a bit more plot.

A Quiet Place Part II
(2020)

Okay, but no new ideas or conclusion
Pros 1. Great starring role from Millicent (Emily Blunt certainly didn't deserve to be top of the bill) 2. Okay acting from everyone else.

Cons 1. No new monsters, so the tension from the first film was lost after a few scenes 2. New characters are paper thin, you don't know anything about them so struggle to care if they die 3. Kept frustrating elements from the first film, including Emily Blunt's self dyeing hair and perfect makeup, and everyone acting in slow motion at the worst times 4. A few decisions made no sense, especially from Noah Jupe's character.

Oxygène
(2021)

Melanie Laurent masterclass
Pros: 1. Amazing one actor performance 2. Well thought out plot 3. Good SFX

Cons: 1. Not everything makes sense.

Mare of Easttown
(2021)

Great acting, but nothing new
Pros: + Star performances by everyone in the cast + Injections of humour + Good pacing

Cons:
  • Plot was too easy to guess at times
  • A few minor plot holes
  • Nothing new, especially compared to True Detective, Sharp Objects or Fargo which did something original.
