Maybe I've seen too many horror films but nothing was new here - the cinematography was interesting and added a different vibe but Ty West's most recent 70s horror was braver, this felt a little weak by comparison.
Low key sci-fi movies that have more of an emotional plot than a literal one never score well on IMDb, e.g. Arrival, Annihilation etc, and this is one of the best. Never mind the fact people always mark down a minority led cast.
Riz Ahmed is as capitivating as ever, the pacing is spot on, and the supporting cast is A* too. It's not an action blockbuster but it never pretends to be, it keeps you guessing and has a satisfying ending. Exactly the movie anyone would want a streaming service to make that might struggle to get a cinema release.
Rewatching this before the 3rd movie confirms why the Avengers elements ruin the franchise, because they immediately make it feel out of date and not standalone. The movie watcher wants to just care about Spiderman, not the rest of the MCU corporate behemoth.
Nevermind that Spiderman works better as a lower middle class 20 year old, not a teen played by an obvious 23 year old, and written by a 50 year old. It just hits the ear wrong, middle aged people can't write people 30 years younger than them.
Also when you learn the plot twist, it creates huge plot holes when rewatching because it just doesn't add up.
Pros:
+ Solid acting all round
+ Visuals are amazing, reminiscent of Prometheus
+ Pacing is spot on
+ Captures most of the book well
+ Soundtrack perfect
Cons:
The fighting didn't capture the depth it had in the book with the shields, etc
Paul's visions had too much Zendaya, not enough of the other parts of his future
CG heavy, using more models/physical effects would've been welcome.
This is probably the furthest off the mark I've seen IMDb's rating of a film for some time, 5.7 is way too low for such a well written and paced thriller/horror.
Pros:
+ Acting is flawless
+ Tension all the way through
+ Perfect running time
Pros:
+ More venom = more laughs
+ Tom Hardy as great as ever
Cons:
Could've done more with Carnage, made more of a character out of the voice talking to Woody Harrelson and showed how he handled it differently to Eddie
Naome Harris' character felt like an after thought.
Pros:
+ Ryan Reynolds brings the wacky energy of Jim Carrey, but in a way that's not cringey in the 2020s
+ Great premise
+ Good supporting cast
+ Great SFX, avoided being too CGI heavy (unlike Ready Player One)
Cons
Taika Waititi is awful, aggressively unfunny (and I'm an In the Shadows fan)
The YouTuber commentary pulls you out of the film, should've been cut
Would've been better as a 15, the games this references are famously violent so it's noticeably lacking in blood/swearing
A few script howlers "coding is just 1s and 0s" (no it isn't) etc.
Pros
1. Great starring role from Millicent (Emily Blunt certainly didn't deserve to be top of the bill)
2. Okay acting from everyone else.
Cons
1. No new monsters, so the tension from the first film was lost after a few scenes
2. New characters are paper thin, you don't know anything about them so struggle to care if they die
3. Kept frustrating elements from the first film, including Emily Blunt's self dyeing hair and perfect makeup, and everyone acting in slow motion at the worst times
4. A few decisions made no sense, especially from Noah Jupe's character.
