Pizzás
(2001)

Not an ordinary movie
Pizzaman delivers the pizza and experiences life. I don't agree with those who blame the directing or the actors and the whole film. This film is rather a vision than a simple story. A vision about different things in life, included love.

The actress playing Mannácska is a very attractive woman, it's a pity we cannot see her in other Hungarian movies. OK, she's not an excellent actress, but she has her charm and she was OK in this movie. The actor playing Pizzaman was OK, too, although he's not an actor either.

The movie is rather a puzzle of different video flicks (different visions), which at the end happen to meet. Every flick has something to tell us, but don't expect moral lesson or such, it might be just a joke or a satire or a parody of our consumer society or just a parody of itself. I liked the dialogs very much. The characters speak in untranslatable word-pictures throughout the movie, which I've found very funny sometimes. If you ask about the location of the story, there's no obvious answer. It's Budapest, of course, but sometimes it suddenly changes to a city in USA or to a seaside resort (and Hungary doesn't have seaside). This has its hidden meaning, of course.

All in all, this is a good Hungarian film. Don't watch it like you would watch an ordinary movie.

Zimmer Feri
(1998)

The worst Hungarian parody ever
This film is supposed to be a comedy/parody placed in the post-communist Hungary, soon after the fall of communism, when people desperately wanted to get rich easily and quickly. The easiest way to accomplish this mission is to lamb down the German tourists who visit Balaton, the Hungarian "sea" - thinks Feri, the movie's central character played very well by Gábor Reviczky.

The problem is not with the actors. The cast is exceptionally good and all the actors perform very well, they really do their best. The problem is with the script and directing. I wonder how Péter Tímár could write and direct such a bad movie. What kept him motivated to finish this project? Maybe I just can't buy his humor. Even worse, it made me suffer.

Sorry guys, but I just can't score this film higher that 1. :(

Na végre itt a nyár
(2002)

I loved this movie
I don't understand why this film is so underrated. It's not a Hollywood movie, of course, so don't expect something similar to American family/adventure films. But it has the specific Hungarian flavor, it has many funny moments and the cast is fabulous, better than I've expected. The child actors play very well and make you forget that this is just a film, gripping you along with the story.

The adventure begins when a family - 3 children and their parents - arrive in a village off the map to spend their summer vacation, as usually at the grandparents, who by the way are former performers (clowns) of the famous traveling circus "Bombardi". But it might happen that this is their last summer vacation in Modolány, as the grandparents' house and property is soon to become confiscated by the village's richest man, who has evil plans with that property. So the children have to figure out something to hinder his plans.

Montecarlo!
(2004)

A bad movie with excellent acting
This movie is an adventure/comedy about three high school teachers leaving for Monte Carlo to play all the school's savings in the famous Casino in the hope that they will double it, thus saving their crumbling school from close-down.

The basic idea is good and this movie could have been good, as well, but unfortunately the script is poor. There are nice and funny moments in the film thanks to the three actors who play the three main characters. Koltai and Mucsi are famous and great Hungarian actors, so they didn't surprise me. Gerda Pikali, playing the female character is surprisingly good in this film, adding a little bit of flavor to the story.

In order to understand the humor of this film one has to be born Hungarian. The condition of some schools is really that bad in Hungary as depicted in the film and there's hardly any aid coming from the state or elsewhere. And yes, teachers are much underpaid in Hungary.

I understand one cannot expect miracle from a low budget movie - although I've seen very good low budget movies -, however a bit more adventure, a bit more action and few more characters would have helped the story.

Bottom line: this movie is definitely NOT a MUST see. One can enjoy it in a rainy evening, especially if s/he's a Koltai or Mucsi fan, but otherwise it's a waste of time. This is NOT one of the good Hungarian movies - and believe me there are some really good ones.

The Snow Walker
(2003)

The civilized barbarian and the barbarian from civilization
This is a story about survival. Yes, there is life out in the nowhere, although we, barbarians from the civilization might not think about it when sitting on the sofa and drinking beer in the front of the TV in our warmly heated living room. But what if you happen to crash with your plane in the middle of nowhere? I'd say you're lucky, 'cause you have a civilized barbarian with you; she's sick, but still can save your life, take care of you, sew you a coat to survive the winter, teach you how to conquest the white wilderness. And you'll realize soon enough, that the knowledge you brought from your civilized world doesn't help you to survive. You're just a weak and defenseless human being exposed to the cruelty of the wild nature. It's an outstanding movie, worth watching.

Egy szoknya, egy nadrág
(2005)

Old fashion modern comedy
I didn't know this film is a remake, so I just watched it without knowing anything about it. And I liked it. It's a quite good comedy I'd say. Bajor, Kern and Rudolf are great actors, they perform as usual. Szonja Oroszlán is not an actress, unfortunately and we could see this in other movies, too, however the role she played suited her. The story is OK, it's funny, I could even laugh sometimes. What I didn't like: Bajor's character is not the type of a man who could be loved by a young attractive woman like the one played by Szonja Oroszlán. Can money buy love? You'll find out watching the movie. It's not a 10/10 film, but enjoyable, maybe 6.7 from 10.

Rap, revü, Rómeó
(2004)

Far to be the best Hungarian movie, but watchable
"Rap Revü Romeó" is a ghetto movie "Romeo&Juia" style. That's the only thing I could appreciate in it. The main character of the movie (János Gálvölgyi) is a Hungarian humorist, so I expected a comedy, but it isn't. The story is very simple, two gangs fight against each other (but it's not really obvious why - stupidity is not sufficient for justification), a gypsy gang led by a former mob (Gávölgyi) and the Chinese gang. Young Romeó, the mob's nephew falls in love with his classmate, the Chinese girl from the opponent gang. Around the middle of the film a third gang appears from the nowhere, led by a dope (played by András Stohl, who usually plays the good guy), just to introduce some violence in the movie, but the connection between these gangs is not really developed. And there's a high school teacher (Eszter Ónódi) with her freak father, yet another nonsense in the story. The whole film looks like a bunch of long clips mushed together, but the glue is missing. Acting is very bad in this movie (except some very marginal characters). At least the soundtrack is colorful and everyone can find one or two good songs that suit his/her musical taste. If you have spare time watch it, otherwise don't waste your time. At least the attempt to remake Rome&Juliet in a very different context is appreciable. That's why I rated this movie 6/10 (otherwise it's only 4/10).

Nimed marmortahvlil
(2002)

A good Estonian movie, must for Estonians, recommended for others
The story is set in 1919, just after WWI has ended and the reds took over half of Europe. I wouldn't call them Russians, as you'll find out from the movie, that besides Russians there were Latvians and even Estonians in the red army. Unfortunately history repeats itself, in war it happens that brother fights against brother, or blood against blood.

It's a patriotic movie, of course. Estonians, as many other nations in the world fought for their freedom. What I liked in this movie is that it gave back very well the atmosphere of that time (excellent photography, and CGI perhaps) and also depicted very nicely the Estonian coutryside. Watching this movie I felt the urge to visit this country. Also liked very much that the film didn't want to make heroes. In contrary, it showed the weekness of these young students, the fear they felt being in war, killing other people. They were just victims of the war.

I bet this is one of the highest budgeted Estonian movies. But still very low budgeted comparing to American movies of the same category. So don't expect the same war scenes. However I liked it, as it is.

Only thing I can criticize in this movie is that the story is a bit too simple, too obvious. That's why I rated it 7/10. However it's an outstanding movie.

RRRrrrr!!!
(2004)

Simply awful
Why does someone make a movie like this? Why does someone accept a role like this? Shame on Depardieu he accepted to be part of this film. I couldn't find one single gag in the whole movie. It's jut simply awful.

The story set in the prehistoric age, two tribes, one already knows the secret of shampoo, the other... actually nothing about the other one. They just try o steal the technology of hair washing. In the meantime someone invents crime among the "shampoos". And some others try to investigate the murders.

Could have been a good movie, but lacks everything that a comedy should have in. Bad screenplay, bad directing, bad humor. Not worth even 2 starts.

A Pogány Madonna
(1981)

A marvellous Hungarian action/comedy from the 80's
A very cute, well directed and acted Hungarian action/crime/comedy from the '80s of communist Hungary. A story about a stolen museum relic (the madonna), a clumsy cop (András Kern) and a Balaton sailor (István Bujtor), who's a cop, too, but kind of retired and not really aspiring for success as the other one and of course about the lifestyle of people living around the beautiful lake Balaton in those time. Being a Hngarian born in Romania I saw this movie first time in a Romanian Cinema, which was a big deal, it meant a lot for us, for Hungarians living in Romania, as it was shown in the darkest Romanian communist era, when no movies were shown on TV at all, we couldn't hear Hungarian speech on TV or Radio (there was no cable TV or satellite receiver in that time). I remember all the tickets were sold out and we could buy them only on the black market (from gypsies, who bought them for 6 lei (Romanian currency) and sold them for 25 leis each). I loved this movie. And then I saw the movie something like 15 years later on TV in Hungary and I still enjoyed it. You know, it's not comparable to a Hollywood action movie, it certainly has its weaknesses, but it's ours, and we love it. I strongly recommend for Hungarians living abroad.

The Amityville Horror
(2005)

Nothing new on the plot
Yet another horror movie, in which our main characters buy a house that has been haunted for several decades by evil ghosts. Unfortunately the story has already been told in several other movies, like Poltergeist for instance. If I was a movie director and I had a script like this in my hand, I wouldn't produce the movie, unless I could introduce something new in the base storyline; something, which hasn't been told, yet. Although this movie is quite frightening and well directed, it's just another Poltergeist. It could've been called Poltergeist 4 (or 5? which was the last one?). However those who haven't seen any of these older movies will like it.

Dependencia sexual
(2003)

almost a good movie
Sexual Dependency is an interesting movie, very different from the movies produced in Hollywood. However I agree with the user commenting that "it could have been a good movie". Unfortunately it has many deficiencies. One of the biggest one is that the small little stories are quite scarce and non-realistic, e.g. the first one and the last one. I don't understand the director/writer why he changed the location of the last scene... Why did he move the story from Bolivia to USA? This gave me the impression that the stories are completely different and they won't have any meeting point, or anything in common (then at the end it turns out they have). The filming technique is also quite tiresome. You see two screens, sometime having completely different action in one than in the other. And as the movie is shot is Spanish, you have to keep an eye on the subtitle. So it's really hard and tiring to follow both screens. Sometimes I had the feeling that I'm bored, at some point (after the second scene) I thought I should stop watching the movie.

Cats & Dogs
(2001)

Might be good for kids, bad for parents
Cats and Dogs is a bad movie. It isn't funny at all. The story is not well constructed, lacking funny scenes, and the main gags were taken from other movies. It wants to be a parody, but it isn't. It wants to be an entertaining movie, but it isn't. It's boring. Cats and Dogs having a huge arsenal of weapons and high-tech -> okay, it could be affordable if the story were at least funny. Poor Jeff Goldblum got a really crappy role, he shouldn't have accepted it. :( Although many celebs contributed with their voice to this movie, still isn't worth spending time on it. However for kids might be entertaining. For parents it's just a "yet another" family movie with talking animals and lots of animation. Score: 5 out of 10 as it might entertain children.

Monsoon Wedding
(2001)

Good movie, indeed
A movie about the wedding habits of the upper-class Indian couples. And about love of course. A movie full of passion, music, dance, joy and sadness, as well. The huge cousinhood is present at the bride's house, making the preparations for the big event, the wedding. Everyone has his/her own little secret. The bride, the cousin, the sister and even the head of the family, having financial problems. Love is everywhere, especially during the monsoon-time. Even the low-class Indians have their touching love story (between the maidservant and the guy supervising the preparation for the wedding). All these events happen is a very Indian atmosphere, you can see the swirl of New Delhi, the atmosphere of an Indian market or wedding. The monsoon rain cannot ruin the mirth of the wedding party, it just gives an Indian flavor to it.

The Treasure of the Sierra Madre
(1948)

Good old movie
This movie won some prizes in 1948 but I'm surprised Humphrey Bogart hasn't got even a nomination. I'd take the risk of saying that this was Humphrey Bogard's best performance in his life (okay, maybe the best one was in Casablanca). The movie is about how gold can change a poor but winsome man into a thorough-paced rascal. Three homeless guys decide to make money by digging for gold in Sierra Madre. In the beginning they are like brothers, help each-other, they work together hard, fight against the ruthless nature and Mexican bandits. But as the weight of gold is rising they start to suspect each-other stealing the other's share of gold... Recommendation: don't bother that this is a black and white, old movie, watch it!

Ferris Bueller's Day Off
(1986)

Yet another boring teen comedy
I don't know why this movie got a score of 7.7 out of 10. It's just another boring teen comedy. Those three high school guys are doing actually nothing on their day off. Just going to restaurant, to a baseball match, etc. The high school principal is a funny character trying to catch the slackers, but has a forced humor. Okay, there are some funny scenes in the movie, e.g. Ferri's father spotting his son in a taxi or in the crowd for a moment, and then in the next moment the guy disappears as he had never been there. I dare say this movie is good for a rainy afternoon, but otherwise don't waste time watching it. I'll rate this move 4/10.

The Aviator
(2004)

Interesting story, but too long and rather dull
A story about a rich guy, who invests all his money in flight, and fights his way among politicians and competitors. Interesting story, with full of animation and emotions, but too long and rather dull. It's not a love story, neither a drama, nor an adventure. It wants to be everything and comes to be nothing. I've been expecting a much more better movie from Scorsese, however I think the problem lies in the script. DiCaprio brings an excellent performance, but all the other talented and illustrious actors are just puppets on the stage. Recommendation: If you don't have anything else to do, you can watch it. Otherwise it's not worth giving money for it.
