Watchmen

Confused and trying too hard
-Minor Spoilers- I just came back from the theater and I'm pretty unhappy. I like watching my movies with low expectations and if I can ignorant about the plot. Both were the case with this movie. At most I expected a good action movie or a CGI fest.

In summary I've said, confused and trying too hard. I felt this throughout the movie. There are movies that make you uneasy, uncomfortable and confused, but in the end it comes together and hits you in the face while pleasing you in an unusual way. This is not that movie. This is just "what?" A perfect movie is the one you can't take out anything from, without making it worse. You could take lots of things out of this movie, and it would actually get better. Pointless sex scenes, pointless sidetracks, pointless blue genitalia, pointless and dead end side stories... you name it.

Trying too hard. The movie is trying to break grounds, by breaking some clichés. For example, breaking into a computer by guessing password. The character tries to guess, we think he's gonna get it and get ready to cringe, but he can't. Oooh. Surprise. Well he gets it in the third try. Sex scene where the guy can't get it up, trying to be realistic (why?). Meh OK. But then he proceeds to get the ultimate Hollywood lay. It's like the director said "let's break new grounds" without having the need to break them. Just for the heck of it.

OK. Action? Sparse. This is one of the movies with most inner monologue and diegesis. Boring. CGI? Existent. Pretty good. Actors are pretty good overall. especially Jeffrey Dean Morgan.

Watch it with very low expectations and with a lot of time in hand.

Not doing what it's supposed to do
In a nutshell, this is a modern day girl power movie, combined with a slasher movie, and lacking in both. There is gross and there's too much useless conversation. Throughout the movie there are two parts which are pretty much awesome, and the rest is a long voyage in boredomtown.

This was supposed to be a homage to older B movies, but it's not doing that. Quentin Tarantino's 'conversation thing' wrecks it a lot. Aging, skipping and so forth, doesn't help much after that.

Though you may want to rent it and ff through 4/5 of the movie.

I like Tarantino, as much as Jimi Hendrix. He found a new thing to do in movies, but is repeating himself, and feeding off of his image. From my perspective of course. There are many now who would and could shoot Tarantino movies better than him. After watching this movie, I think maybe he should just be a producer and just push movies of his liking through his charms and connections.

A nice thriller that won't put you off!
Recently watching movies made me unhappy, and I thought if there was something wrong with me. I mean, I usually find myself getting out of the movie's immersion with mistakes, incoherences, lack of mood and clichés.

I was skeptical and didn't have high expectations of the movie, even though the IMDb score was high. ( lately I don't trust the score that much either ) First of all, I'm far from being a fan of Kevin Costner, I really don't like most of his movies, and his presence. Secondly, I really don't like Demi Moore. And at the beginning of the movie, I was very afraid to see clichés and incoherences because of the stories focal point and perspective.

Turns out this is a really nice movie. Here are the things I like: What I liked the most was the great immersion value, and excellent storytelling. I loved it. It has an excellent pace. Kevin Costner played very very well. Demi Moore wasn't that good, but didn't really have to be.

There was no error or incoherence for the casual/enthusiastic watcher. The plot also, had a good balance of surprises/twists & playing to expectations. And it was hard to pull off decently. A very tidy movie with lots of entertainment, to sum it up. The musical score was also very nice and helps with the mood.

You definitely won't want your money back, and neither will your dull friend.

Dreamfall: The Longest Journey
(2006)

In one word: tiresome
I'm a fan of the adventure game genre. Seeing this game was awarded as best of genre and best music and one of the best games of the year by game-spot, and it had so much applause, I thought I'd give it a try.

At first, I was really annoyed with the controls but still managed to make it OK for me by rearranging them.

Anyway, first impressions. Huge looking game area, very little interaction with environment. Looks like it sucks. And it is so throughout the game. You don't have to think even a little bit and this is supposed to be an adventure game? There are much better interactive movie games for god's sake! At least they are not this linear.

Oh yeah, the game is very linear. When I was presented with very contradicting decisions, I thought the game was interesting. But it's not. They are just there for show. Linear all the way. At least Vampire:Bloodlines was honest about it and had mood to show.

The much applauded storyline isn't really that good, and doesn't end properly. I don't care if there is a sequel to be made about the game. This is no way a game should be done. It's not even a cliffhanger. Its just, "what the..?" Yeah and it has some important coherence problems too. Be wary.

What I hate the most is game design though. I cussed a lot playing the game. This is a very very honest breakdown of gaming time: 70% Sneaking (very easy, just takes time) running around fetching things, climbing huge ladders, walking around in obstructed spaces, more running in huge environments where only thing to do is to walk 25% Listening to people speak 4% stupid "myst" style puzzles that are also easy and just tiresome 1% stuff I wanted to like it, I don't. Not a bit. Not even though I love the genre. Even though I want people to make games in this genre. Please stay away.

Stay away!
After watching this I thought to myself, there are either too few good writers & directors or lots of producers.

At any rate, this is a terrible movie. Terrible in a way that it's not fun, but rather makes you grit your teeth and quiver. Makes you shout "this is wrong" at the movie. Immersion is zero. By now most of you are probably used to the terrible errors/weirdness-es in movies that has computers hackers etc. in them. This movie is like that in every aspect.

The only good thing about the movie is the little girl Emily, brilliantly played by Eliza Bennett. I hope she becomes big, and make this ..thing at least worth something.

Do yourself a favor. Don't watch this. There is not even proper action in it. Total waste of time.

Primitive entertainment
When I went to see the movie, it was out of curiosity. How well did they adapt the master's work, how good are the effects, and will I be entertained. To answer my own questions, the adaptation is meh. The post production is yeah. And I'm entertained... mostly.

The movie is based on a graphic novel, so historical authenticity is not important when evaluating it. Still, the movie lacks a lot. Especially in script and cinematic value.

To put it short,

If you want to see good photographic stills in motion If you want to see musclebound man in gory action go and watch it. You will be entertained, if you don't care for the storyline, acting, weak plots, cheesiness, and clichés.
