The Rise and Fall of Legs Diamond
(1960)

The polished version of the legendary Jack Legs Diamond!!!
Butt Boetticher more commonly known as western's director dared to do this Noir picture over the legendary hoodlum Jack Legs Diamond, actually the nickname Legs was given due he was a good dancer, somewhat it seems much alike of UNTOUCHABLES's default configuration, partially the producers bring many guest stars from this prestigious series as Frank DeKova, Simon Oakland, Warren Oates, Joseph Ruskin, Dyan Cannon, also such show offered an episode portraying Jack Legs Diamond as well.

The picture in some measure is accurate, apart the tour voyage to Europe whereby totally rigged, all others facts is quite truthful, Ray Danton in top form accounted for the racketeer in plenty way, the leading ladies Kareen Steele as Legs's wife and the femme fatale Elaine Stewart as B-girl they didn't disapoint, Warren Oates played the jinx-sick brother in a small role, the highlights went to the fancy mobster Arnold Rothstein (Robert Lowery) a pivotal character due thru him Jack Legs Diamond entering in the underworld, unfortunately God knows what the writer Joseph Landon changed the exact spot where the die-hard Legs went to die.

I'm must confess that expected much more than this pale version, because we dealing with a classy director as Boetticher, worst some actors as Jesse White was miscasting for a mobster role, also I've a slight feeling that Ray Danton is too much cartoonish persona to play Legs Diamond, somehow he didn't deliver it properly, he sounds a bit polished so to speak.

Slaves of Babylon
(1953)

Daniel in cave of lions and Cyrus the Great on Babylon's siege!!!
Oddly enough in 1953 three biblical epics were made as such THE ROBE, SALOME and Slaves of Babylon, two of them sponsored by Columbia, actually this genre was booming since the smashing success of SAMSON AND DELILAH, follow up by DAVID AND BATHSEBHA bringing crowds at box office at its time, then Sam Kastman teams up William Castle as director and Richard Conte as leading role in the infamous chapter of Jewish people as they called "Babylonian Captivity".

Of course as usually the producer enforced an inaccurate storyline where the Jewish have been mistreated by Babylonian and also forbidden to practice their faith, such things never occurred by many sources, to vouch for the prophet Daniel was King Nebuchadnezzar's counselor, so upon these facts the picture falls apart, worst on small budge production with poorest sets, fake battles that involving a few soldiers in a pale acting and finally the miscasting of Richard Conte is visible, without forget the tiny Cyrus portraited by Terry Kilburn, in fact the unique character that bring a reliable persona is the flaming Princess Panthea by the gorgeous Linda Christian.

All those painted backdrops used in a noticeable and over-shooting scenario as Vasquez Rocks means a lack of creativity of the producer, allied in a weakest special effects, all this together undermine the offering at lowest point, it never was release in Brazil in any format, to re-watch it again I've to appeal for all-weather friend Youtube that has available a fine print of this colorful biblical epic history.

Living in Oblivion

Cult satire-comedy, however addressed for selected audience!!!
This independent picture is regarded as near masterpiece by mainstream critics, in fact the director Tom DiCillo approaches an unusual subject indeed exploiting the troublesome movie making process and behind the scenes, mainly small budge ones where a newbie director has to dealing with some egocentric actors, weirdo crew members and countless technical mistakes on shooting process, all this in a wise concept of mixing fantasy and reality underlined in two colors.

Aside it the picture isn't to all taste whatsoever, the slow pace allied in a nerve-wrecking atmosphere won't please the large majority, it's a art movie on a stagey dialogues, DiCillo teams up the eclectic Steve Buscemi, the skinny Catherine keener, the gorgeous Danielle von Zerneck & Hilary Gilford without forget the upcoming star Peter Dinklage, Dermot Mulroney as associated producer also compose the casting as Wolf the cinematographer.

Hard Target
(1993)

Stylized, blasting, stunning action and sooo artificial!!!
It was the first John Woo picture at American ground with Belgium martial arts fighter Van Damme, in advance the producers Chuck Pfarrer and Sam Raimi adapted a fresh version of THE MOST DANGEROUS GAME shot in 1932 to nowadays in New Orleans where the hunting takes place in the famous Bayou swamp, the evil Count Zaroff's character is addressed to bleak Emil Fouchon (Lance Henriksen) aid by the merciless Pik van Cleaf (Arnold Voslo).

Routinely musical comedy bringing many stereotyped characters!!!
Essentially a musical comedy produced by Cinedistri, this thematic picture was ridding high along the fifties, at least a dozen musical numbers were scattered on storyline some off topic, however mostly concerning carnival season at Rio de Janeiro, the plot summarized consists in a crook Juca Moleza (Renato Restier) posing as rich man made a bold plan to steal a packed of valuable diamonds jewelry in a lavish rented mansion using a beauty bombshell Maria Xangai (Renata Fronzi) as his phony upper class wife.

Aware of a limited budge William Friedkin has chosen newbie actors as William L. Jacknife
(1989)

An intimate story of vet soldiers suffering post-traumatic stress disorder!!!
Usually a star like Robert De Niro often is wanted for big projects, however he would rather make a small piece like Jacknife, a kind of intimate role, pressure free from the major studios, a relief after nerve-racking huge-budge productions, this little story fits perfect in this mindset, where De Niro has a chance to act plenty as the former vet Megs suffering that infamous post-traumatic stress disorder looking for a friend Dave (Ed Harris) to appease his fear as much as engage with his old war buddy also trying forget the heavy loss of their everlasting friend Bobby in battlefield.

Oddly enough this reacquaintance Megs stumbles with the shy Martha (Kathy Baker) Dave's sister, it triggers a mutual romance interesting, nonetheless the bitter Dave seems dislike it whatsoever, due Megs's bad past records of violence warning his silly sister all about, although they proceed anyway, actually Megs sound be a wacko guy in several sequences as far as Dave as well, the viewers will understanding it according the story unfolds where many hidden happenings come to surface, where the patience audience will be rewarded.

Shunpu den
(1965)

Upon a low budge production Suzuki made it greater!!!
Sunpu Den is a remake of AKATSUKI NO DASSO wrote by Kurosawa in 1950, then Seijun Suzuki approaches it more deeply than a dramatic romance that was his forerunner, whereby didn't show the sexual relationship at army's bro.thel, so Sunpu Den is too much daring for its period of time, by this the movie was hard beaten by the critics at release time, regarded as a cheap sexploitation, also Suzuki imposes a slight nihilism narrative to counteract the ruthlessness of the war, the plot is underpinned in the legendary Japanese inexorable honor code where no soldier shouln't go back alive if caught in enemy hands, such act is punished by death.

As Seijun Suzuki was a former soldier exposes some oddities carried out at wartime, it somewhat became more realistic from a vision whom stayed there and witnessed such real facts, as those soldiers refusing kill Mikami (Tamio Kawaji) in a desert area in a phony battle to conceal his guilty for being prisoner of war and some funny moments at Chinese's village when the squad returning from the front fight themselves by the best girls, actually as anti-war offering Suzuki imposes an overview less gloomy on the drama.

Oddly enough as B-production of Nikkatsu studio it overcame the bad reputation on sixties thru the times, today Sunpu Den earned several defenders and became a mandatory peace nowadays, many aspects assert such thing as the unusual cinematograph made by Suzuki's old acquaintance and partnership Kazue Nakatsuka, a must to see.

Twins
(1988)

Smashing box-office for a well-meaning comedy!!!
Ivan Reitman's career has been alternating in few ups and more downs, Twins fits better in the middle, actually the duo Danny and Arnie didn't match, no matter how hard they tried, even in an auspicious concept underpinned in the abysmal inequities concerning the leading actors as odd twins, thus this premise sounded as promising, however the writers didn't find a proper way to exploit it as, then the results stayed far away to be accomplished.

It becomes in a mild tone comedy, never takes off as expected, nonetheless has just some fine sequences or so, as their first meeting at prison on Danny DeVito mocking Arnold if he is starring in a mirror or when they passing thru near with other on street without notice, all the remaining were dumbest as learning to drive, stealing the car on the building park, worst whoever suggest that car's acrobatic on first drive experience should be sent to asylum.

The romantic pair choose by both Kelly Preston and Chloe Webb don't add too much just portraying as female presence only, the eye-candy Kelly is a suggestive sex appeal for the still virgin Arnie and Chloe as forgiving girlfriend, what's coming to assuage? The plot of stolen turbo engine and a hitman at DeVito's tail, further Maury Chaykin's funny gangsters, often taking a beating by the strong twin brother, the outcome with their missing mother is corny and gimmicky at least, anyway it lets see easily.

Deadline at Dawn
(1946)

Small forgotten Noir gem in Susan Hayward first top billing!!
At last the still doll face Susan Hayward got her first leading role at RKO, as usually a low budget Noir offering conceived by Clifford Odets from Cornell Woolrich's novel about an exciting and engaging story thru an everlasting murder heat night at New York, when a naïve sailor Bill Williams finds himself entangled with a murder in a woman's apartment, helped in time by Susan Hayward, it seems at first glance an usual crime, however whereas the movie unfolds it will becomes in a patchwork.

This odd case involving countless characters as foreigner taxi-driver Paul Lukas, a hot-headed gangster Joseph Calleia, a lame blondie housewife Osa Massen and his jealous husband Phil Warren also a blind piano player Marvin Miller and so for, the extent that the time is running out, they must find out the real murder due the mariner Williams ought to take a bus to rejoin US Navy at Norfolk under pain of defection, it triggers a countdown at deadline at dawn as the title suggests.

Don't be fooled by some bad reviewers posted here, please reading the highest ones, it's a clever screenplay seldom seen in a tight budge production, memorable bluestocking lines scattered by the wiser writer Clifford Odets, as Non Compos Mentis or according Statistics tell us...and so on, what a fantastic minor buried treasure that come to the light to us.

The Addams Family
(1991)

Overhauling and improvement process of Addams Family by Sonnenfeld!!
Who doesn't remember those afternoon sessions of the weirdo cartoonish Addams Family, I used to watch it in late seventies aired for my unique local TV at my infancy time, thus made sense Orion Pictures brings back the legendary bleak family, Sonnenfeld a successful cinematographer was taken into direction as full-control in this bold project, he enforces an eerie and darkest Addams family than never, also in a gothic style.

They hit the target off the batt casting the best Morticia ever as Angelica Huston allied with Raul Julia portraying Gomez to top it off Christopher Lloyd as Uncle Fester, He teams up a picked crew of designers, photographer, make up, art direction and so for, as huge production soon constant delays exceeded the prearranged budge, hence Paramount took over the project, even so the producers were afraid for it becoming a flop in box-office, they were wrong, Addams Family took the heart of audience in a smashing worldwide success.

Luckily because all casting asking on knees for a change of the scrip about uncle Fester phony into a real missing one, it somehow triggers a turnaround on now sympathetic family character, it was the key of the success, otherwise as was early conceived certainly won't so enjoyable for the angry and aware viewers, overall Sonnenfeld had accomplished with honor his hard task to updated Addams family in improvement and triumphant manner.
