Smokin' Aces
(2006)

Not Quite Smokin' *SPOILERS*
I was looking forward to this film since I saw the trailer back in November for a few reasons. One, the cast looked brilliant as it brought in veterans of past gangster movies like Andy Garcia and Ray Liotta and mixed them in with some younger, fresher, hipper faces like Ryan Reynolds and Alicia Keyes. The other was that it looked like it could be a film that could match the likes of Pulp Fiction and Lock, Stock.

However that turned out to be the films problem. It was a bit too Tarantino and Guy Ritchie and while the film was pretty original, I couldn't help but think I was watching an American version of Lock, Stock with more guns. Even with all those guns though, there ended up not being a whole lot of action after all even though there is a massive body count.

I have a few other complaints that I'll just keep brief - it all seemed to get a bit too serious at the end and didn't seem to suit the tone for the rest of the film. Ben Affleck had far too little a role in it for being billed as the leading man (however his demise came as a shock. The whole thing seemed a bit pointless when the ending came about.

Good points however - Ryan Reynolds really surprised me as he turned out to be the real leading man. Having only really seen him in comedy roles before, he was entirely convincing in his role here and cracked no jokes at all. Thumbs up to him. Alicia Keyes was also great for this being her first acting role and looked absolutely incredible. The action (even though there probably wasn't enough for a film of it's kind) was pretty spectacular while it lasted. There are also a lot of scenes with some pretty sharp humour especially with the three Nazis.

All in all this is a pretty decent movie, not a classic by any means but worth seeing for sure.

Dirty Sanchez: The Movie
(2006)

Pretty nasty. (Spoilers!!!!)
I've never been a big fan of the TV show Dirty Sanchez and didn't really have much interest in seeing this movie. I always just thought it was a Jackass rip off with less originality in the stunts and just aiming for sheer brutality.

Well I got wound into going to see the movie and for the most part I enjoyed it and laughed at most of the stunts that I saw like the paintball gun and the Tai kick boxing scenes. However, there were some parts that were just too nasty. Now I'm not squeamish at all and I love some of the most violent films known to man, but the finger cutting scene was just too much. This just proves my point about the show in the first place that these guys will just do anything to upstage Jackass or the other shows of this nature. I don't really find a guy chopping his own finger off amusing or entertaining.

If you like the show then you will like this movie, but avoid if your the sensitive type.

Clerks II
(2006)

Perhaps Kevin Smith's best movie to date.
Kevin Smith's never really had the easiest of careers. While his movies have spawned a massive cult following there are a lot of haters out there who believe that he is just a one trick pony and movies like Mallrats and Jersey Girl took quite a pasting from critics and were failures at the box office.

Now I've been a big Smith fan for a few years and I'll admit that I was a bit sceptical at him returning to formula and bringing out a sequel to his first movie that was released in 1994. It looked like Smith was going to past glory after Jersey Girl had failed with critics and audiences.

However I'm glad to say that Clerks 2 is excellent and is maybe Smiths best movie yet. It takes some of the humour from say Mallrats and manages bring in the emotion of Chasing Amy. The relation between the two main characters of Dante and Randal is surprising touching and their acting is spot on. It is a great look at friendship and will make you think of how important our relationships are.

I would say that this is the funniest film of the year and is perhaps my favourite movie of the year so far.

Severance
(2006)

Nice good bloody serious fun!
I'm quite surprised that this movie hasn't done better as I thought it had hit written all over it. This film has only been out for two weeks here in Scotland and it already only has one showing at 10.25 at night and the screen that we were in only had around 15 people in it. Shame that, as this movie is brilliant entertainment.

It starts out with pretty funny moments but gets very violent and gory after a while. This is what I found a bit confusing with the film as I found myself not sure whether to laugh at some parts or not (the part with the guys leg being the main example).

However I did enjoy it though and some parts, especially the ending are very exciting. The plot is pretty clever and the characters are likable. All in all if you can handle the violence then this is a movie worth catching. Shame it's not getting the same recognition as Shaun Of The Dead.

Lucky Number Slevin
(2006)

Pretty enjoyable I thought
OK, so this isn't a downright classic movie, but I felt it was pretty enjoyable. I was a little hesitant in seeing this flick and the main reason for that was Josh Harnett being the leading man, but he surprised me in being quite strong in that role.

Morgan Freeman and Sir Ben Kingsly are obviously great in the supporting roles as the feuding gangsters while Bruce Willis is the usual stone face monotone voice guy he is in most of his movies now.

I think that this movie will attract a lot of criticism due to the obvious fact that it thinks that it thinks it is a lot more clever than it actually is. A lot of comparisons have already been made to Revolver and this is probably a weaker film as it is not as clever.

Overall though, I enjoyed this and would recommend.
