Breaking Surface
(2020)

Aun underrated masterpiece
This movie looks very authentic.... the gear, the drill, the experience of the younger sister makes you feel she is in charge. Minor spoiler alert : Her role as leader is about to change, and her older half-sister has to deal with an emergency.... the older sister is overwhelmed by panic and distress at first, but when finally she comes to the last straw, her brain goes into overdrive, and just when you think she has played her last card, she comes through with super insight and goes into pure survival mode. This is, from my experience, a unique and rare mode that we enter when facing mortal danger... we enter a zen like state of mind, in which every possible option is analysed at fast speed... she comes up with an idea and follows it through, and after a massive crescendo, the movie unfolds every turn for the better..... I think a genius of suspension and a great puzzle solver put this film together. Respect for the directot, and excellent female actors. This was an unexpected gem of a film, which i will never forget. Amazing and unique. A classic. Bravo to the director, cast and crew.

Space Station 76
(2014)

One of a kind
I'm English and love this film. There's no question about it... it's an original masterpiece and destined to become a cult classic. Firstly Liv Tyler is brilliant in it... her face always a little melancholic and perfectly matching her character who yearns for something more. I must say the whole cast is spot on... Captain Glenn a really strong performance, the little girl Sunshine was excellent, the whole cast was perfect. I have come across different copies of this film with different cut scenes oddly enough... but the dark humour and character studies are crafted so artfully and so true to life and the hopelessness of the human condition that the film really speaks to me. I will watch this one a few times with pleasure. I know other ratings are not as positive as mine, but it could be that the movie touches a nerve or two.... still my verdict is 10/10 for originality, style... yes there's some very stylish photography in it, and some charming details that are easily missed... enjoy the movie !!

Star Men
(2016)

Charming from beginning to end
Make no mistake, Imdb ratings are misleading. This is an outstanding documentary about 4 old guys, unsung heroes in their field; their get-together and their reflections on their past life and our future. Not only do they speak very wisely, they add in bits of humour and delightful anecdotes on their careers as Astronomers. And each of them has made cutting edge discoveries and advances in their respective fields, but they are modest, dedicated, down to Earth, and in many ways as human as you or I. A humbling experience, and probably the best documentary I have ever seen. I recommend it to everyone, whether or not you care two hoots about Astronomy or not. What a great show!

Knight of Cups
(2015)

My impressions
It's hard to make out a plot in this movie, nevertheless I enjoyed it. The camera work or photography is excellent.. I also appreciated the music, especially the Grieg, since I am a Classical Violinist !

I do like the moods and feelings that come across, no doubt each person will interpret these a little differently.

It's not an accessible movie to watch, and not a traditional film but still I like it, perhaps not as much as The Tree of Life... since that was slightly more traditional and slightly more defined... this is even more other-world like and one would do well to watch some of his other films first, in preparation.

Enough ramble.. just count me in as a fan. For sure.

Steal the Sky
(1988)

An exciting movie
Okay, historical accuracy is only approximate... Mig 15, Mig 17, Mig 21 well, whatever it was, I'm sure it's not important to get this spot on. What I think is important, the big picture, the story as a whole, the drama, the excitement... that really comes through. The tension builds up, and the timing all adds to a tense climax.

I do love this film ; the actors are great and the sense of speed and awesome shots of low level flying (I don't think this is enough to qualify as a spoiler) are thrilling. This is my favourite film about warplanes / fighters... and is much better than Top Gun in my opinion. In fact, writing this I've just got myself all excited about it ... and you know what... maybe I'll go upstairs and watch it one more time!! Do not miss it just because one reviewer says the facts are off (because they are... it's just based on a true story).

The Tree of Life
(2011)

Exceptionally Good
For sure, this is one of the best films I have ever seen. I am not so keen on the 2001 Grand Creation of the Earth scenes, but they do put the main section in perspective. Brad Pitt does a great job, as do the 3 boys, the wife (many of the beautiful scenes feature her)... and last but not least Sean Penn. I'm sorry he felt a little disorientated post filming.. I can understand the editing changed his scenes a lot.

This film brings back many (childhood) first impressions. It is shot beautifully, with great sensitivity. It can be understood by all... we all struggle in life, and this film is a typical example of such a struggle. In this day and age where people are spoilt rotten and have everything they wish for, it is no wonder the film does not 'register' or make an impression on so many minds.

I cannot think of another film which is on such a vast scale, yet which contains minute sensitive details that we can all identify with. What a masterpiece; no doubt too sophisticated for an American audience, though.
