Star Trek Into Darkness
(2013)

Very enjoyable film, even better than the first.
I have never watched any of the previous Star Trek stuff or given it much thought. I watched the 2009 film as it was a brand new modern version and tells the story from the beginning so it didn't matter that I was new to the franchise. I really enjoyed that film and was surprised to enjoy this sequel even more.

All of the characters and the basics are set out in the first film and so they are all developed further in this film. The relationship between Kirk and Spok was a really amusing aspect of the story line and Chris Pine and Zachary Qunito played these contrasting characters very well.

This film has a great range of action which includes physical fighting as well as a lot of fighting the kind you would only see in a science fiction like this. The character of Khan was quite captivating and Benedict Cumberbatch was very memorable in this role.

I definitely recommend this film (and the first one) to anyone whether you are already a fan of Star Trek or not. This was a science fiction full of action and funny moments too and I think people of all ages would enjoy. I hope there will be more to come.

Elysium
(2013)

Interesting futuristic action film
Elysium is another film which depicts what earth will be like in the future and how our society and civilisation will survive. In this story the classes are even more divided and the rich and powerful all reside on the perfect habitat that is the space station Elysium, while the rest of the human race are struggling on overpopulated earth. The story follows Max, who Matt Damon does a great job of portraying, as circumstances lead him to go on a mission to disrupt the way of life and the inequality between the two.

This film has some great action which is bound to keep all viewers entertained and the whole futuristic aspect makes it more interesting. There were quite a few memorable characters in this film one of which was an unpredictable and manic Elysium agent played by Sharlto Copley. Also the relationship between Max and his childhood friend was quite moving and added more meaning to the story.

There were some gory moments in the film which I noticed shocked some of the audience but these were few and far between. Overall I think this was an enjoyable and gripping film which is something quite original and definitely worth a watch.

Crank
(2006)

So entertaining & gripping
Jason Statham is one of my favourite actors, the type of films he is usually in are just my cup of tea and this is another great example. I only just got round to watching Crank all the way through and I absolutely loved it. The story line is simple but has a far-fetched streak which allows for all the crazy action to take place.

Chev Chelios is a brilliant character and he is driven to do so many impulsive and insane things because of the situation he is in. There is so much action and violent fight scenes and it is so fast paced because he literally has no time to slow down.

The whole concept of the film is really entertaining and the fact that the action is just continuous makes it extremely gripping. I also loved the comical side of the film, a lot of which is delivered through the character Chev Chelios. The fact that Statham does his own stunts just makes the film more impressive and genuine.

I absolutely recommend this film, short and sweet -definitely worth a try for anyone.

Kick-Ass 2
(2013)

Loved the first one and this is better
I really enjoyed the first Kick-Ass and I thought this sequel was even better. In this one Kick-Ass has already been well established as a superhero and he returns to the scene and teams up with other like minded people. The other characters who were inspired to become vigilantes were all interesting and some very comical. Hit-Girl was also great in this film as she was in the first and it was interesting to see more depth to her character.

This film had a great combination of comedy and action throughout. There were a lot of funny moments and yet there was also a lot of serious action and some of it was quite gory.

Some people might be put off thinking that this would be geeky because of the comic book theme but anyone who enjoys actions films should give this a try. Also there is quite a lot of violence in this which might not be expected because it's a comedy but there is also a serious element in it.

Fever Pitch
(1997)

A brilliant portrayal of life as a football fan
As an Arsenal fan my view of this film is no doubt biased, I simply love it and I can watch it time and time again. Any Arsenal fan would enjoy this film however I think that not only football fans but also any sports fan in general could appreciate and relate to this film.

It is based on the book by Nick Hornby and the main elements are common throughout them although the story has been adapted quite a lot to make it more appropriate for a film. The relationship between the main character and his on and off girlfriend plays a central role in the film which differs from the book. The book is definitely worth a read for anyone who enjoys the film.

Fever Pitch does a brilliant job of portraying all the emotions a football fan goes through, how it can affect every aspect of your life and how non football fans don't understand it. Therefore even people with no interest in football could also relate to this film and enjoy it.

The whole cast were great in their respective roles and all brought a realistic element to it which is what I love about British films. I liked seeing Colin Firth in this role as it was an early film of his and probably not something most people would expect to see him in.

I thought the whole atmosphere created in the scenes at matches was really authentic and it was also interesting to see how football has changed in certain ways.

I can't pretend I would enjoy this film as much if it was about another team but I still think people shouldn't write it off because it's about Arsenal- or football even. This film is about a prominent aspect of British culture and therefore worth a watch for anyone.

The Lone Ranger
(2013)

Better than expected, worth a watch.
I went to see this for the sake of my brother and wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. There was a good story line which could interest people of all ages and it wasn't too complicated.

There was some great actions scenes throughout, the kinds of which you wouldn't see in any other recent films so in that respect it was quite unique. Johnny Depp's character was well suited to him and the way the friendship develops with the Lone Ranger was good.

The setting of the whole film was beautiful and all the costumes from the era were authentic. Visually the whole film was great and I thought the effects were brilliant. There were quite a lot of clichés in this one though and it did drag on for a bit longer than it needed to but I think it's worth a watch for the enjoyable action.

Sherlock
(2010)

Without a doubt the best version of Sherlock
This is an extremely unique version of Sherlock Holmes and it is absolutely brilliant. The way they have taken this classic character and adapted him to the 21st century works so well and makes him much more interesting.

This series would be nothing without the two actors who brought their characters to life, them being Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. Their on screen chemistry is fantastic and they portray Sherlock and Watson in a new and entertaining way.

Each episode in these series are around and hour and a half long which is great as it gives time for a really good story to develop and unfold in each one. Throughout the series there is some thrilling action, some dramatic suspension and also some subtle British humour here and there. It is also really interesting to see Sherlock and Watson meet at the very beginning and watch how their friendship develops.

I am extremely looking forward to the next series, I can't wait to see how it will start out after the dramatic end to series 2.

The Heat
(2013)

Made me laugh, what more do you want from a comedy.
Having read some of the reviews for this film I think that some people need to just lighten up and enjoy a film for what it is. As far as comedies go this one was pretty good and there was quite a bit of action in there too which made it more watchable.

Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy were playing completely opposite characters and they were both amusing in their respective roles. I thought their rivalry and competition brought more comedy to the film and it was also nice to see how they became genuine friends.

Sometimes with comedies they put all the funniest bits in the trailer and I was expecting the same with this one but there were a lot of laughs throughout the whole film so that was enjoyable. There was a lot of swearing in this film and I can understand why some people wouldn't find that funny but for me it was.

It did go on for a bit longer than necessary but most films do these days. Not everyone will find this funny but I personally would recommend it and I thought it was nice to see another female led comedy. For how much this film made me laugh I have to give it an 8.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns, Part 2
(2013)

Good animation & classic Batman.
As a Batman fan I really enjoyed this animated version, both parts of this were good but especially the second. The fact that it is a cartoon does not mean it is for children, it just basically brings the comic books into motion. There was a lot of action and violence in this and because it is a cartoon means that there were no limits.

The story line unfolded at a quick pace which is partly due to the fact that this is only just over an hour long so it is packed full of action. The joker gives this film a very dark side which you might not expect from a cartoon but all the stories involving Batman in the comics are dark so it is true to the those.

Whether you are a fan of the comics or the main films or not this is worth a watch and you may be surprised.

Chronicle
(2012)

Really different and includes a bit of everything
This was a film about three teenagers who develop incredible and fascinating powers after a strange encounter at a party. Throughout the film they learn to use and control their powers and discover new things they can do. This was a really enjoyable aspect of the film and the way characters reacted was fun to watch and felt believable.

The way Chronicle was filmed as though it was all through the main character's video cameras made it more personal and in a way more realistic as well. The three main characters were all very different and interesting in their own way and as the film goes on you see how they all deal with their new found powers differently.

What I found great about this film was how it had two very different sides. The first part was really light-hearted and comical as they try out their powers and become good friends because of their shared secrets. Then the film changed quite drastically and became quite dark as things start to go wrong and there was also a lot of great action in the latter part of them film.

I was pleasantly surprised how much I enjoyed this film and I think it is definitely worth a watch.

Lawless
(2012)

Brilliant drama
A lot of people are giving Lawless fairly negative reviews so I think I need to explain why it's such a great film. First of all it's really unique because of the specific setting of it during the prohibition in the United States which made it interesting viewing.

It is about three brothers who are running an illegal but successful business which soon attracts attention they don't want and trouble ensues. There is quite a lot of action in this film but it is mostly about the drama and the different things each character goes through.

There are some fantastic actors in this film who all show their versatility and most notable for me was Tom Hardy and Shia LaBeouf who did an amazing job of making their characters real to the audience and made you really care for them.

It is quite a long film but so many different things happen and it kept me glued from start to finish. There are some very grim scenes, some intense action, emotional scenes and of course romance and even a few comical moments - I think this film has a bit of everything.

This film is not all about the action so don't expect it to be, but the main element is the theme of brotherhood which I loved. Also the fact that Lawless is based on a true story made it really interesting for me.

It won't be for everyone but I thought this film was brilliant and would recommend it.

Django Unchained
(2012)

Great action & drama in which DiCaprio stands out
This film is about Django- a newly freed slave who teams up with a German bounty hunter killing wanted people and claiming the rewards. The two of them then set out together on the mission of finding and rescuing Django's wife.

This film includes a great cast with some well known actors playing very different roles. Jamie Foxx was endearing as the determined and likable main character. His German partner was also very likable and provided comic relief throughout which was nice when it was quite a dramatic film about serious issues. Leonardo DiCaprio portrayed his character fantastically and he really made some of the scenes with his brilliant acting.

The story line is quite powerful and there were some very shocking and gory scenes in this film but because of the topic of the film those scenes just had to be in there.

I think this is one of those films which everyone has to watch and at least give it a go. It is definitely memorable and despite it being a very long film, it is worth it.

Gangster Squad
(2013)

Great film where cops become gangsters
Gangster Squad was based around true events and was portrayed from the angle of a group of police officers who are intent on taking down the notorious gangster Mickey Cohen. I really loved the era of this film and the attire and whole setting that comes with it.

The cast include some well known actors and for me they all played their parts well and contributed to making this film great in their own ways. The characters all had varying interesting aspects about them to endear them to the audience, notably Ryan Gosling and his love interest with the gangster's lady friend Emma Stone brings an exciting element to the film.

There were a lot of fantastic action scenes and shooting in abundance as can be expected from a gangster film. The way the action scenes were frequent throughout made it gripping and built up to the end of the film in a great way. Overall I thought this was a great action gangster film which doesn't deserve the negativity it got.

Shutter Island
(2010)

Leo DiCaprio was brilliant & plenty of twists
I had been wanting to watch this film for a while and when I finally got round to doing so it did not disappoint. Leonardo DiCaprio was perfect in the role of the marshal Teddy Daniels and he really brought the whole film to life with his performance. Mark Ruffalo was also memorable for his portrayal of the supporting character and their relationship was a crucial part of the story so it was important that they both played their parts convincingly.

What I loved about this film was the whole psychological aspect of it which makes it extremely gripping. It's the type of film which constantly makes you wonder who is telling the truth and it pushes the viewers to try and figure out what is really going on. As the film progresses and reaches the final stage there are more and more twists revealed. Even after having seen the big revelation at the end of the film I still know I could watch this film again in the future as it would be interesting to view taking into account the truth at the end.

Even though this film is over 2 hours long it certainly didn't feel like it and the thrilling scenes and build up of suspension throughout made it go so quickly. This film is definitely worth a watch and some people may have mistaken it for a horror from some parts of the trailer but it was simply a good psychological thriller.

Welcome to the Punch
(2013)

Gripping film with some great action
I personally love this genre of film but I still don't think I'm being biased in saying that it was really good. I thought the story line was fairly simple which isn't a bad thing as it made it easy to follow while there were twists to come into the plot later on. The main character was played by James McAvoy and I found it interesting to see him playing a cop out for revenge as I thought this contrasted from anything I have seen him play before. The other lead role was portrayed by Mark Strong who I thought played his part really well. This film may not be the most original but the characters and the cast made it unique. There were some brilliant action scenes which were well placed throughout the film making it extremely gripping from start to finish. I think this is an enjoyable film and was pleasantly surprised at how good it was after reading some unfairly negative reviews.

Now You See Me
(2013)

Engaging and mysterious
This film is quite different from any other I had seen before. It instantly draws you in and the story line at some points is somewhat confusing and yet it is still really gripping and not too difficult to follow.

Now You See Me boasts a lot of well known actors and they were all great in their respective roles. A positive thing was that each character was interesting in their own way and it was also amusing to see their relationships develop as most of the main characters only meet as we the viewers meet them too.

There were several twists throughout this film, most of which I didn't see coming at all and each new revelation made the film even more exciting. From having seen the trailer this film did not turn out how I expected it would and I was pleasantly surprised.

Overall this film was an exciting watch, interesting change from the usual mainstream films and therefore a definite recommendation from me.

The World's End
(2013)

An enjoyable British comedy
I don't think this film was quite on par with Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz however it was still enjoyable in its own way. One thing I did like about this film was how different it was from the others and yet it had familiar aspects in it. The main characters were all amusing and interesting in individual ways and when they came together it worked really well. The story line isn't the most amazing and it wasn't the funniest film but it still had its moments and it was subtly funny throughout the whole thing. Towards the end of the film it did start to get really silly but that's what I expected and I think this type of film is good to watch for a change from serious ones. There was quite a deep meaning within this film which made the humour of the whole thing more interesting. Overall I think this film is worth a watch and as long as people are prepared for the weirdness of it then they will enjoy.

Luther
(2010)

Absolutely brilliant.
Luther is a prime example of British drama at its best and it sets the bar high for the rest. It is a simply fantastic series and it combines many different themes which makes is so watchable. It is predominantly a crime, drama, thriller and yet it also has the odd comical moment.

One of the reasons why this is such a brilliant programme is due to the amazing cast and how well their on screen relationships work. Most importantly John Luther himself is extremely captivating and the different levels of his character make you want to find out more. Aside from Luther one of the most notable characters in the series is Alice Morgan who provides another thrilling element to the whole thing.

Another amazing aspect of the whole series is the way that every single episode is so good, although there are a few which stand out, the general level is of such a high standard. The way the story always unfolds gradually creates immense suspense and the climax of the individual stories are always executed through brilliant scenes.

The cases usually start and finish in one episode although the particularly explosive cases expand over two. Each new case is extremely different from the last and yet they were all shocking and thrilling in their own way.

I would recommend this series to anyone to at least try and even if you don't normally like this type of drama I'm sure it would manage to draw you in.

The Social Network
(2010)

Overrated but still interesting
The internet has become a part of everyday life for most people and Facebook is something everyone has as least heard of and therefore the whole subject of this film is something most people could relate to. Seeing how this well known site was started by college students was interesting, particularly how it developed from one small thing and escalated.

The majority of the characters in this film are not at all appealing in the way that you would normally expect them to be. However this is irrelevant because it is based on real people and as much as I did not like them I still wanted to carry on watching to see how it would develop.

I liked the way the story was told varying between the court cases and reflecting back on memories as this showed with an impact how the friendship between Mark Zuckerberg and Eduardo Saverin was affected.

I was surprised how interesting a film about the origin of Facebook and the impact of its growth could be and I think it is definitely worth a watch.

The Wolverine
(2013)

Slightly disappointed
This film is set following the events of The Last Stand and it shows Wolverine attempting to deal with the aftermath. In the beginning he is almost unrecognisable and he has distanced himself from his former life. However this is Wolverine and he could never stay away from trouble so it's not too long before the action starts kicking in.

Certain aspects of the story line felt rushed and though it wasn't hard to follow, it didn't seem like enough thought had been put in. In particular I found the love interest extremely forced and unnecessary especially because so much of the story evolved around it. However I still enjoyed this film and there were plenty of brilliant action scenes as should be expected when the main character is Wolverine. Despite the questionable story line this film is still definitely worth a watch, for Hugh Jackman's continued brilliant portrayal of Wolverine if nothing else.

X: First Class
(2011)

Best of the X-Men
I am a fan of Marvel in general and I loved all the previous X-Men films so I expected to enjoy this film anyway and had quite high expectations. It did not disappoint and is in fact my favourite film of the franchise. This is saying something considering the fact that Wolverine is my favourite X-Men character -although he does feature with an amusing cameo.

One of the things I loved about this film was seeing the origins of many characters and seeing how relationships formed and developed. It was interesting to see the contrast in this film from the main three, particularly regarding Professor X and Magneto.

The fact that this film is a prequel to the main films means that anybody could watch it and understand the story line. I definitely recommend this film to anyone and I think that those who would not normally watch this genre of film may be pleasantly surprised.
