A Series of Unfortunate Events
(2004)

It had its moments..wait..maybe not.
Ah....yes...THIS movie. The title is way too long for me to type up. Well, the beginning was attention-grabbing. I wasn't expecting it to be like that, really. Unfortunately, I had a bad feeling about this movie from the moment I got into the theater.

Mind you, I'm very picky when it comes to movies. (my all-time favorite movie is LOTR. You should only listen to my opinion if you like LOTR :P) And I truly DESPISE Jim Carrey when he acts all goofy. (I found him to be quite good in Bruce Almighty and Eternal Sunshine) Jim Carrey did over-do it a little, but it was bearable. The kids-particularly the boy-weren't award winning actors, but they did an okay job. The subtitled little girl was annoying at times. I noticed a lot of people laughing at them, but come on...they were all just insults or annoying little quirks. (this could be Lemony Snicket's fault. I haven't read the book(s) Plus, none of the kids had much emotion. I guess Jim Carrey had enough emotion for all of the characters, though :P Now for the parts I liked! The costumes and the atmosphere were wonderful. Very beautiful.

....That's it :) The story was nothing special. It was a bit slow at times, too. Jim Carrey's impersonation of a raptor was very accurate I thought! Just like the ones from Jurassic Park :) Overall, hm....was it the director's fault or Snicket's fault? I may never know. But, this is better than "Christmas with the Kranks" :P I recommend it for the easily amused people and big Jim Carrey fans.

The Incredibles
(2004)

I need to see it more than two times! (possible spoilers)
Well, after the Lord of the Rings trilogy was over, I thought I'd never see movies more than 5 times ever again! But wow, this movie was good. I could see it 5 times in the theater easily.

I think you need to have a close family to really understand this movie. (or at least wish you had a close family) I thought it was funny how my family's a lot like this...minus the baby. (me being the role of an older Violet, heh) Anyway, I thought Mr. Bird did a great job on the whole family thing. The arguments between the parents were perfect, and the way they all interacted with each other was very realistic! It was cute how all their powers complimented each other, as they should in a family.

The plot was wonderful! I'm not sure why some people got bored during the middle; they only showed and talked about important things. Maybe I have a high tolerance to long dialogues and emotional scenes or something. (well, you gotta have that if you love LOTR, hehe) Syndrome was a good villain (But Hades from Disney's Hercules will always have a special place in my heart), and his death was just perfect. The story was creative and pretty well-explained. I don't remember there being any major holes or anything.

I don't usually say this, but I loved every main character in this movie! Mr. Incredible was very sweet; I loved how much he cared for his family. Elasticgirl was a great mom and kicked butt. I'm sure all moms want to do that! (I just love the part where she turns into a parachute! that was awesome) Dash was adorable, and I usually find little brothers to be annoying :P Violet was your typical preteen girl, which worked for her. One of my favorite characters was Edna; she was just too funny. I loved every scene that had her in it. And the cape scene...heh, that was great. Oh, and Frozone! I loved him, too. He was just..lovable. Syndrome was funny, too. He has one of the most memorable lines: "and you got biz-ay!"

Woo, so overall, this movie was amazing. I can't compare it to Finding Nemo...they're 2 completely different movies that I love a lot! I guess I'd have to say I love them both the same. The Incredibles may bore people with ADHD, but come on, how can you not like this movie? I'd give it a 10. Ha! ...okay can I see it again? Now?

Mr. Smith Goes to Washington
(1939)

Wow. (may be spoilers)
I admit that I just saw this movie very recently and approached it as a typical teenager would in this day and age. But I forgot how much I love Jimmy Stewart in "It's a Wonderful Life" (one of my all time favorites) and how much I love Frank Capra. Well, obviously I ended up falling in love with this movie, too.

Of course, it's not a typical movie like we'd see in theaters today. I'm not sure why people rate it based on that. Old movies should be treated with more respect! They didn't have the technology that we did now, and the most advance things they could do were corny montages. :) Really, I found a lot of things funny in this movie that shouldn't have been. (but I tend to laugh more than anything; life is just better that way) The boys in the entire movie were hilarious. They were just...so strange. And for some reason, it was okay for angry politicians to ram their huge truck into the boys' car. And it was okay for Jimmy-boy to run around the streets punching people. But in the end, I believe those parts made the movie more enjoyable!

The music, the acting, the directing..it was all top notch in my opinion. Well, the music was a bit too patriotic at times, but that was very appropriate. Jean Arthur was very cute and played her role quite well. And, for some reason, I fell in love with Claude Rains voice..which means I fell in love with his character. I had to convince myself that there was some good in him, and I was right. The story was just fine. (a lot better than a lot of movies around today! oy!) We went over the corniness...and the plot may have been a bit predictable, but I really wanted it to end well. Good needs to defeat evil in the end. And sure, the ending may seem a bit abrupt, but what can they say after that? All is well!

A very good movie. I'd recommend it to ANYONE..you might just be surprised. (hey, can you believe it? I really hate history and I enjoyed this movie!)

Zoolander
(2001)

What are you, a bunch of Jim Carrey fans!?
Dude, I can't believe it! Dumb and Dumber got a better score. I'm sickened.

heh, but I shouldn't be all worked up about it. There's something about Mugatu that keeps me laughing the entire movie. And the jokes aren't so incredibly lame like in "D and D" Yes, the humor is stupid, but not RETARDED. :( Ben Stiller did a nice job, I think.

I mean, who doesn't laugh at the "Merman...*cough cough* MERMAN!" part? :P ...maybe I just like overly dramatic scenes. Man, I'm a really picky movie-critic, and I really loved this movie. And I love the classics like Holy Grail and Young Frankenstein. Go figure. People are diverse.

I give this a 9.7/10 (.3 is for the moments that were just too stupid for me..but honestly, there weren't many)

Moulin Rouge!
(2001)

I laughed when this got nominated for an Oscar.
I will apologize in advance to those who liked the movie. WHY? Was it the dazzling effects? (perhaps the only thing interesting) The singing? (which nearly killed me) The acting? (definitely NO ONE'S best acting) The story? (God, no...) I even feel bad for writing a review! I could NOT get past the first hour, and I've tried, oh yes, I've tried. Twice, maybe three times. This is a sad excuse for a movie. Did it win any awards? I'm not sure, but it's quite possible it did.

Now, let me think...is there anything remotely interesting? The wacky-ness was horrible. And believe me, I like silly stuff! (when appropriate) But Moulin Rouge, oy, even the title makes me cringe. This is perhaps my least favorite movie of all time. Now, call me crazy, but I like good movies, like Lord of the Rings, and Monty Python and the Holy Grail, and It's A Wonderful Life, just to name a few. There's PLENTY of good movies out there. Classics.

Yes, I laughed when this AWFUL movie was nominated. And I rejoiced when Lord of the Rings kicked its silliness :) What a triumph!

American Beauty
(1999)

I don't think a movie has ever touched me this much.
Movies make me cry quite often, especially when the main character dies. But, I didn't think I would cry after seeing this. At the beginning of the movie, I didn't like any of the characters. They were all so messed up, all so strange...I couldn't really connect with any of them. Lester (whose name must have some meaning..though I'm not sure what) is just a pervy-middle-aged man, and his wife is a cheating perfectionist...but their daughter seems relatively normal. And his next door neighbors are really creepy. But, in the end..it all makes sense! I JUST turned 17, and suddenly I feel much younger. And even though I'm young and haven't experienced much at all, I somehow have new hope and I feel bad for not appreciating life as I should. This movie has so much power. It really makes you...think...think about who you are. I cried when Lester died...after all those years of hating life, he finally loves it, and then he's dead.

I really enjoyed reading some of these comments. Some of them made me realize parts that I didn't understand, and other comments confused me. Why would people hate this masterpiece? It really hurts me when people call this movie "shallow" and "over-rated." Sure, Titanic SUCKED, but not all things that win Oscars suck, for God's sake! This movie was pure art and SO deep, something that many movies try to do and fail miserably. So why do people hate this movie? How can they not be touched by it? (just another mystery of life I guess) It's...genius, it really is. I can't even describe it.
