Vom Zaren bis zu Stalin
(1962)

Worst documentary...ever
My teacher found a copy of this and previewed it herself before showing it to our class. She then decided we had to watch it because of how hilariously awful it was.

It is so unbelievably awkward. Nothing flows, and the man doing the commentary has this stupid commanding voice. It's like they were trying to match a the history with any random footage they had. There was one shot when they were discussing rioting in the cities and were simultaneously showing the royal family roller skating.

The best part was when they showed the royal family bathing nude and concluded that this was "quite normal." Like I said...It hardly relates to the Russian Revolution at all. I'd only recommend it for a good laugh after thoroughly studying the period.

The Wonderful World of Disney: Walt: The Man Behind the Myth
(2001)
Episode 1, Season 44

Loved it
I never really knew much about Walt Disney, so I bought this film. And I think it was a great place to start. It gave a lot of background information, and you really got to see things from the point of view of the time. Instead of looking at it from 2005, I was looking at the film from the early 1900s and into the future. Walt's early life really interested me. He was basically a regular guy (aka genius) following something that really interested him.

I recommend this to anyone who wants a nice base of information about Disney. It's got that warm fuzzy feeling to it as well, but without hiding much. I think most will enjoy it.

Maid in Manhattan
(2002)

Painful to watch
Honestly, I want my money back.

Some may have liked it, but I really couldn't sit through the film comfortably. It was Pretty Woman meets Cinderella gone horribly wrong. In fact the most irritating thing was that the film seemed to lack any real purpose at all. Unless JLo getting everything she wants is something unusual.

And I realize now the real problem with the film. Jennifer Lopez and Ralph Fiennes? In what way is that not a disaster? Ralph Fiennes is elegant and classic (and this beautiful Brit is the only reason I got through the movie), whereas Jennifer Lopez is new and youthful. They just don't match. Or you know, maybe that's the message the director is trying to get across, because I really didn't see any other point for the movie.

The only good thing I will say about the movie (besides Ralph) is JLo's kid has decent taste in music. However, couldn't you just go out and buy a Simon and Garfunkel CD yourself, and call it a day?

Four Weddings and a Funeral
(1994)

Romantic Comedy Done Right
Four Weddings and a Funeral is a wonderful movie. Romantic comedies often throw people off because they tend to be cheesy or depressingly sugar-coated. However, this is a truly wonderful movie.

First off, the cast is terrific. They play off of each other wonderfully and it makes for a delightful atmosphere. Just take the lead, Hugh Grant, whose character doesn't appear fit the stereotypical lead at all. The humor is very witty, and the jokes are guaranteed to make you laugh even after you've seen the movie a dozen times.

Situations in the movie are set up to be played out perfectly. In one scene Hugh Grant is at a wedding and is seated with all of his ex-girlfriends. The scene is set up for utter humiliation.

Even with the quick-witted characters, and all the weddings, it wouldn't be a movie without that touch of drama that for many might just get a tear out of them.

Hands down all around great movie to fit most every occasion.

Gone with the Wind
(1939)

Timeless
Gone With The Wind is and probably always will be my favorite movie. And of course it's not hard to see why.

For any romantic, the story is a true testimony to love. Scarlett O'Hara is probably one of the best characters in modern literature. She portrays the desires we all have, and her ruthless behavior shows how far she will go to get what she wants. From loveless marriage to loveless marriage, poverty, hunger, and jealousy, Scarlett struggles with the effects the Civil War has on her life.

This is one of the first films done in color and for the time, some of the scenes are absolutely breath taking. One can make note of the scene where Scarlett is in Atlanta and stretched out as far as the eye can see are hundreds of wounded men.

I really recommend this movie. It's a classic, it's romantic, it's heart breaking, and it's truthful. Gone With The Wind is a story that can speak to us on every single emotional level. The movie shows you a world where nothing is one sided, and what we have mistaken for truth may not be true at all.
