N.H.K ni yôkoso!
(2006)

Wonderfully empathetic story
Like 'A Silent Voice' this is, at root, a story about empathy which hits all the right spots. 'Welcome to the NHK!' has and excellent understated eclectic soundtrack and solid animation for its time. The themes it deals with are serious but a healthy dose of humour prevents it from becoming too much of a dismal affair.

It can sometimes be difficult to find anime that resonates with one as an adult. It may take a while to get to that point, but this is definitely one of them. Highly recommended.

Made in Abyss
(2017)

Beautiful and imaginative
One of the most imaginative anime worlds I've seen with great artistry to back it up. Like Attack on Titan, Made in Abyss utilizes a sense of progressive exploration to really keep the viewer on their toes. You won't find earth-shattering philosophy here - the story is so far quite simplistic, but it is fun and very well presented and there is a sense of mystery which keeps you invested.

While some have said that the pacing is off, I disagree. This is anime that lets its (very endearing) characters breathe and develop organically and every moment is enjoyable. Soundtrack is amazing too.

Despite the chibi art-style, this isn't a show for young children. There are a few gory/violent scenes and some mild sexual references.

Steins;Gate
(2011)

Great adaptation
The visual novel version of this is probably one of my all time favourite media of any kind, period. It's laugh-out-loud funny almost always that it wants to be and the slow build up to the climax makes for a hell of an emotional rollercoaster.

I'm not quite sure that this anime matches it in pacing or humour/dialogue (but this isn't a slight against it, the original was just very very good). However:

This is beautifully drawn and animated. Direction is unique and experimental. Audio work is very well done.

Overall, I'd say that this adaptation has really brought the characters and world and Steins;Gate to life, even if it suffers from some pacing issues due to it's format.

For those unfamiliar with the original work, expect: wacky, endearing characters, time travel (a surprisingly grounded take on it with only one or two liberies taken) and a good many feels.
