Entertaining to some point- mostly very weak Reviewing Season 1+2 I watched this because of the positive reviews. And because I was sick and in the mood for something light. That's exactly what you get with this show. Shallow entertainment, cheesy lines, much of mostly superficial emotions, but a storyline that keeps you going.
This TV show is made for people that like a soap opera in a different setting: if you like like cheesy love story books, happy endings and a story that never requires you to think, this story is for you. Which is absolutely OK when you are sick in bed and just need the time go by. After 2 seasons I spent this way I will eventually watch it further, when I get sick again in the future. I accidentally watched some episodes not in order (disc jockeying is hard with fever) and it only struck me once(!) when the story suddenly made no sense. I guess this tells much about this show.
Pro
+Some actors are really good. Mr Gold and Regina are my favorite. Henry is OK. Sadly, there aren't others.
+The main storyline is quite OK and far apart from Fables. It's certainly not a rip off but stands on it's own feet
+Some CGI elements are quite good for a TV show. The wolf is done quite nice.
Con
-Most actors just act really bad. I do not know if they cannot act or act good following a very bad script, but the amount of cheesy lines, superficial emotions, crying and complete absence of change of acting when the story changes to the enchanted wood is amazing.
-This get's really bad, when main characters are played by these bad actors. Snow White, her daughter, Ruby....very charming, really. But incredible bad actors.
-While the main story is quite intriguing, the "fable of the week" stories are very weak and full of plot holes. Maybe someone like to explain where all the werewolves were gone, when the "bad thing" happened? They were just gone. And it's like this with guards, soldiers, school kids and other people of all kind. Gone by the wind when the plot don't need them anymore.
-This also takes over in the main story of the second season. Absolute unrealistic behavior when "the big truth" is discovered. As good as no character acts accordingly to their "awakening" except the main characters. And even they act in man situations as if they were unaware of what is going on.
-When the story changes to the "fantastic lands" the show is at it's lowest. Everything is filmed in modern woods - the kind where cut down trees lie around (yes, cut down with modern machines), no brushwood or scrubs can be seen and you have modern forest roads with gravel. Yes, with modern gray small gravel. In one scene you even see tire tracks! While it's true that most people just do not know anymore how a real wild forest looks like. The people responsible for the show should know this. Also the characters speak and act absolutely identical like their modern world counterparts. It really feels like some amateur actors in amateur costumes play fairy tales. The props are funny at most. Come on...the costume of the fairies? What is that?? It's even worse than modern Disney interpretations of fairy tales. It's really that incredibly bad (except the actors and most props of Gold/Rumpelstiltskin and Regine/Evil Queen).
-The CGI. With very few positive moments and many mediocre ones, this show also has some of the worst I have seen since Babylon 5 (which was otherwise very good). "Wonderland" or the scene with the "Giant" are so bad, you would even be "amused" when a modern computer game would sport such CGI.
-Too much crying. Look, I really love dramas, romance and deep emotions. But in this show there is crying all the time. About the most stupid things.
In no way you can compare this show to shows like Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad...you name it. You can compare it with Twilight Zone or the "monster of the week"-episodes of the older X-Files. Or even Dallas. Entertaining in some way, but no depth at all. A soap opera in fairy tale clothing right from the carnival shop.
