Guillermo del Toro's Pinocchio
(2022)

Boeing and soulless
There is no discussion about the beautiful art abd settings and puppet mastery that is used in this movie.

But as it shines on the outside, it's empty on the inside.

At no point did I feel a connection to any character (and i regularly cry watching movies!). Everything is too perfect, even the unperfected.

Also the songs are horrible. Boring songs with boring lyrics. What a joy was "Nightmare before Christmas" in that matters what a letdown is it here.

And of course Torro chose Fascism as the ultimate evil. It's not fitting at all in the story abd feels just to make the movie "important".

One of the most soulless and boring movies with one of the worst soundtrack and songs.

I was not expecting a happy movie knowing Torros previous works but this was just a waste of time.

What is up next? Heidi meets fascist Japan? Grimms fairy tales in World War I? Lassy in the old south, guarding slave plantations?

You can tell very heartfelt and very important stories without these settings. But it's so much easier to settle withe those, where the audience leaves the movies with a heavy head, as this is never allowed to happen again. Ahh yes, there was also this puppet...what was it's name..Pinocchio!!...yes, this Pinocchio was also in the movie. But the fascists! And the Duce!

Fall
(2022)

A real experience
This movie is an experience. I was bound to my sofa for most of the time, me heart beating like crazy and I forgot about my surroundings completely.

The camera work is fantastic, no green screen used (most of the movie happens on a real 100ft tower built for this movie on a mountain so it looks like they are up 2000 feet). The climbing and stunts are really breathtaking, literally.

While one can argue that no one in her right mind would ever climb a 2000ft radio tower that is already falling apart, please be aware that sadly young people around the globe ARE doing stunts like this for fame on social media and/or adrenaline kicks. Hanging with one hand from a 300ft crane? Find it on YT, people ARE doing that.

So, the setting is not as absurd as one might think (especially when being older).

The acting is great, especially the blonde girl is playing the danger seeker fantastically.

I'm really afraid of heights, so that added of course to the thrill and suspense.

This movie is not a masterwork that tells a big story. But the story it tells, it tells it flawless and as a movie about height it's one if the best I have seen.

Highly recommend. Even after 20min and now writing this review on the edge.

Pride & Prejudice
(2005)

Bad acting, bad story
My wife and me, we love historic movies and TV series. We really abhor this movie.

While you can say that this book adaption could not strive to far from its source, nevertheless it's just a bad story. All women in this movie act incredibly dumb. The only thing they care is to marry a wealthy man, someone else is marrying a wealthy man or their daughters are marrying a wealthy man. No women has any depth in this movie, any character, any wish other than marrying.

Not enough of this incredible cliché of women at these times, the acting is horrendous. At no point you feel the actors are real. They are like amateurs, trying costumes and playing "old times". They hardly can control modern day emotions (Keira Knightley's grinning is a shame), lacking every inch of how different people behaved in the past.

3 stars for good camera and sound.

The 100
(2014)

Worst acting in a long time
I just watched episode 1, but it was the worst acting and production I have seen in a long time. It reminded me of bad "reality shows".

Teenagers who supposed to be prisoners on a space station wear full make up, trendy leather jackets and while they never have seen earth, have no problems navigating through a "forest" (which looks like a stage).

It's so bad, I can't even add more words.

The Fate of the Furious
(2017)

All time low of the franchise
The Fast and the Furious had some really good moments over the years. "The Fate" is sadly an all time low: bad script, bad story, bad "all star" acting, bad soundtrack and the worst abuse of physics and other natural laws ever. An atomic submarine can swim faster than a sports car can drive? (No, speed record is 65kmh) How about not only hacking thousands of cars in seconds, but also coordinating them exactly...done by one person? A C-movie blown up to AAA with money, name and stars.

An all time low, insulting every sense. Watch it at home, drunk and sleepy, you will maybe like the explosions and countless deaths with not a single drop of blood. 👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎👎 👎👎👎 PS. Postproduction is really great, one of the best colors and contrast I ever saw in a movie. Sadly wasted.

Get Hard
(2015)

A whole movie about how funny it is that men get raped in US prisons
So the whole plot of the movie is, that it is perfectly normal to get raped in a US prison. And as we learn at the end of the movie: this is also perfectly fine if it happens to the bad guys. It's so fine we can all have a good laugh about it.

In a time of the false Rolling Stone mass rape story, in a time where rape culture is seen everywhere except when it happen to men, in a time where we have countless "survivors of rape" in a "rape culture", in a time where "Hunting Ground" was made....in this time it is perfectly fine to make a comedy that circles around only one thing: that it is normal and really funny to get raped as a man in a US prison.

Definite, there is a rape culture in many countries. It is about how normal it is that males get raped in prison and how the bad guys earn to get raped. It's so normal that our society can make a nice comedy of that situation.

Now, if you think I am exaggerating: try to imagine a comedy where a female is threatened to get raped every day for the next 10 years. A comedy. And when she can clear her name at the end then we all are happy that two other bad ladies now get raped instead. Do you laugh now or feel sick? Then why don't you feel sick when it happens to a man?

Once Upon a Time
(2011)

Entertaining to some point- mostly very weak
Reviewing Season 1+2 I watched this because of the positive reviews. And because I was sick and in the mood for something light. That's exactly what you get with this show. Shallow entertainment, cheesy lines, much of mostly superficial emotions, but a storyline that keeps you going.

This TV show is made for people that like a soap opera in a different setting: if you like like cheesy love story books, happy endings and a story that never requires you to think, this story is for you. Which is absolutely OK when you are sick in bed and just need the time go by. After 2 seasons I spent this way I will eventually watch it further, when I get sick again in the future. I accidentally watched some episodes not in order (disc jockeying is hard with fever) and it only struck me once(!) when the story suddenly made no sense. I guess this tells much about this show.

Pro

+Some actors are really good. Mr Gold and Regina are my favorite. Henry is OK. Sadly, there aren't others.

+The main storyline is quite OK and far apart from Fables. It's certainly not a rip off but stands on it's own feet

+Some CGI elements are quite good for a TV show. The wolf is done quite nice.

Con

-Most actors just act really bad. I do not know if they cannot act or act good following a very bad script, but the amount of cheesy lines, superficial emotions, crying and complete absence of change of acting when the story changes to the enchanted wood is amazing.

-This get's really bad, when main characters are played by these bad actors. Snow White, her daughter, Ruby....very charming, really. But incredible bad actors.

-While the main story is quite intriguing, the "fable of the week" stories are very weak and full of plot holes. Maybe someone like to explain where all the werewolves were gone, when the "bad thing" happened? They were just gone. And it's like this with guards, soldiers, school kids and other people of all kind. Gone by the wind when the plot don't need them anymore.

-This also takes over in the main story of the second season. Absolute unrealistic behavior when "the big truth" is discovered. As good as no character acts accordingly to their "awakening" except the main characters. And even they act in man situations as if they were unaware of what is going on.

-When the story changes to the "fantastic lands" the show is at it's lowest. Everything is filmed in modern woods - the kind where cut down trees lie around (yes, cut down with modern machines), no brushwood or scrubs can be seen and you have modern forest roads with gravel. Yes, with modern gray small gravel. In one scene you even see tire tracks! While it's true that most people just do not know anymore how a real wild forest looks like. The people responsible for the show should know this. Also the characters speak and act absolutely identical like their modern world counterparts. It really feels like some amateur actors in amateur costumes play fairy tales. The props are funny at most. Come on...the costume of the fairies? What is that?? It's even worse than modern Disney interpretations of fairy tales. It's really that incredibly bad (except the actors and most props of Gold/Rumpelstiltskin and Regine/Evil Queen).

-The CGI. With very few positive moments and many mediocre ones, this show also has some of the worst I have seen since Babylon 5 (which was otherwise very good). "Wonderland" or the scene with the "Giant" are so bad, you would even be "amused" when a modern computer game would sport such CGI.

-Too much crying. Look, I really love dramas, romance and deep emotions. But in this show there is crying all the time. About the most stupid things.

In no way you can compare this show to shows like Walking Dead, Game of Thrones, Breaking Bad...you name it. You can compare it with Twilight Zone or the "monster of the week"-episodes of the older X-Files. Or even Dallas. Entertaining in some way, but no depth at all. A soap opera in fairy tale clothing right from the carnival shop.

Empire Records
(1995)

This movie has it all
This movie has it all: - really bad acting - completely bad story - dialogues written by teenagers - worst clichés about teenager - most unbelievable behaviour of all characters - most unfunny jokes - bad camera - really bad cutting

Well, if this movie would be about a group of mentally ill patients in a hospital, that act like clerks in the most soulless music store ever seen on a screen, it would explain what is going on in this movie. But since this movie wants to be a comedy with some drama parts I can only advise to never watch it. This movie is only good in showing how bad some now well known actors were at the beginning of their career.

I give two stars for the music. Not every song was good but they did not completely mess the music up, which is quite an astonishing thing compared to all the other stuff.

The Pirate Fairy
(2014)

This how animated movies should not be
Yes, I get it: this movie is intended for little children. Sadly it seems to be appropriate these days to underestimate children's minds really bad. One other reviewer posted "Compare it to the original Disney Peter Pan movie, and it is striking how aged and inappropriate for young children that one feels." No, it's striking how less confidence we have these times when it comes to children. They are far more observant, intelligent and bright than this movie would suggest. The old Peter Pan story surely had it's flaws but it was challenging children and their minds in a good way. This movie is the equivalent to so many sketchy and shallow-brained movies that are made for adult that do not want to think, but just be entertained with their brains shut down.

The animations are poor, but would be OK if the movie had depth. The soundtrack is really bad, consisting of sub level pop songs with no charm at all. The characters are super slim beautiful young fairies, that seem to be more obsessed with their look than anything else. Most males are ugly and stupid or at least vengeful and too proud to let the girl fairies to be more than wage slaves. The story is flat and it's clear from the beginning what will happen.

If you need to dampen then brain of your kind to prepare it for shallow talk shows and sketchy movies please go on. Otherwise please please appreciate your child more than to feed him/her this fast food movie.

Django Unchained
(2012)

Just a bad movie
I was once a real Tarantino fan. He reinvented old style movies and it was fun and well made. Problem is, that's all he can do (or is wanting to show). His movies got weaker and weaker and even fans could only reply to critic with "It is intentionally bad! It just makes fun of old movies."

Same with this one. Most funny thing her is, that very young people are talking like this. People that never have seen an Italian western before but now defend this movie as an obeisance, a critical examination or an ironic view. It feels just like Tarantino has thrown some episodes together and found no way to combine them. Acting is really bad (yes yes, it's for sure intentionally bad like everything in this movie) except of Jamie Foxx and Leonardo Di Caprio and. Which is kind of funny, because normally I can't stand him and like Christoph Waltz. But Waltz' character was most times completely overacted like in some school play. Tarantions own small role stood out in relation to the rest: like a completely talent less actor. Man, do I miss the Tarantino of "From Dusk till Dawn" or "Pulp Fiction"...

So: Story is a mess, acting is crap... what is there else to say? Well. The music score is a mixture of cinematic themes, pop music and hip hop. Does not fit as good as anywhere in the movie. Cutting was a mess too. Some cuts where extremely hard and just done badly.

Only cam was quite good, there were some really nice pictures. And the overall theme of slavery and how everyone took their side in this dark times (yes, even the white "missus" did take their role of shame) let me give a 6.

This movie is neither a obeisance to the old Italien western nor is it a critical examination nor an ironic view. It's just took some elements and mixed them up quite bad. If it really was intentional it does not make a better movie. It's like making a gross hamburger to make fun of fast food and then expecting people to eat it with pleasure. Which will be done by all the Tarantino fans out there. No matter how bad their idol cooks, how bad the burger tastes or how messy it looks: they will love it because it's made by their idol. For the rest of us: good there are much better restaurants our there. Including the old traditional Italian Pizzeria where you can get a real "Django" if you want to. Without any erupting blood fountains, they are nowhere to be seen in this movie from 1966.

TimeScapes
(2012)

Nice technical demo, but not more
When the "movie" begins, the scenes take your breath away. This huge resolution, these beautiful landscapes and pictures of our night sky.

But after 5 minutes I realized: that's it. There comes nothing more. Just a technical demo of what is possible with high resolution cams. Even the soundtrack is completely uninspired.

I love nature documentations and I love movies like "Home" or "Baraka". Even when nothing is said and no story is told (like in "Baraka") it can be a great movie if the director has a vision of what he wants to show you. But TimeScapes has no vision or just is not able to give you a glimpse of it. It's just one scene after another and even worse - it just repeats the same motives over and over: flying pelicans, some valley, Joshua trees, night sky, same rocks over and over again. And then all over again from a slightly different angle. Mostly it shows dead things and rarely living things, animals or humans.

I am really looking forward to what this technology can be used by a visionary film maker. TimeScapes is a documentation, not on the scenes it presents, but rather on how the best equipment can not make a good movie.

Iron Sky
(2012)

A modern Dr. Strangelove
Is this movie really as good as Dr Strangelove? Sure not. Not even near. But as the famous quote "Every era deserves it's art." is true, there can not be another Dr. Strangelove, when someone with the thoughts and ideas -or better the absence of both- of a Sarah Palin can seriously candidate for the president of the USA.

This movie is an reflection of our times. Not the fictional Nazi force on the dark side of the moon will destroy our planet, our leader on earth, especially the last US presidents, are working on it every single day. As this Nazis do propagate peace but bring death and enslavement, the US (and other countries helping them) tells promises about bringing peace and democracy to other "terrorist" countries, while killing their civilians, taking their oil and destabilize whole regions.

This film is by no mean a masterwork. But it is a necessity answer to the madness of our modern world. It's the exact same trash that our societies agree to become by accepting the lies told to us, by accepting the wars in the false name of freedom and democracy, by accepting exploitation of whole layers of society and even whole countries.

Dr. Strangelove had it's own audience. But the new audience this movie was made for, has traded their intellectual freedom to our modern "panem et circenses" (bread and circuses): game shows, reality TV and cheap holidays where no cultural exchange is sought after, just being served by the natives.

Am I seeing to much in this movie? Maybe. Maybe this movie is just the resignation to what our world has become and which people we accept as our leaders. But I am pretty sure that there are much more thoughts in this movie than appear by just watching the trailer.

Real Steel
(2011)

One of the worst movies ever
It's very rare that I don't expect much and much less is delivered.

The story is complete crap. No details of it makes sense. A fighting robot costs only 50k? A robot from the waste yard can almost kill the undefeated champion? A 11 year old boy can extract a 1000 pound robot ALONE while it is dug up in earth AND about 50 meters down a cliff?

Wow...that story was uninspired. The actors were doing their best and you see their potential. But this movie has not only crap story but incredible artificial emotional scenes.

I really wonder what possible reason Hugh Jackman or Evangeline Lilly could have had to play in this movie other than a really big load of money.

Don't watch this movie, really. Even if you are on of the "I didn't expect anything and so it was cool" guys. It's really not worth your time. If I had not promised to watch this movie with a friend I would have gotten out after 30 minutes max not being any curious what would have happened next.

Only nice thing were the animations. Real good work. Soundtrack was really crappy by the way.

So 2 stars for the good acting of a real bad story and 1 for the animation.

Rio
(2011)

Not worth looking
This movie combines most things that are bad about movies:

Story A complete flat and thousands of times all-the-same-story that develops in every moment like you know it would. No surprises and in fact you know from the start how it would end.

Stereotypical role models The main male characters are dumb, have no idea about love and stumble through life led by a brave and intelligent woman. the female characters are bright, handsome, but just wait to fall in love withe the dumb male.

Bad Soundtrack Come on. This soundtrack is bad. The songs in the movie are bad. Just "big" names (Will.I.Am) and really no soul, heart and art behind it. It sounds like modern very bad musical.

Bad characters No development, stereotypical (even the dog) and sometimes disgusting instead of funny (the dog). Typical black and white. This time: good birds against bad monkeys. Not even the boy, which could have a really interesting role, was developed. Just going from bad to good in an eye blink.

3D Many scenes are typical enhanced 3D scenes, that make no sense, but look good in a cinema.

What was good about the movie? Animations were nice (not great). And the voice actors were pretty OK. And if you like a love story, there it is.

Really, a waste of time.

The Pillars of the Earth
(2010)

Don't expect to see the book
Yes, the actors are good and the whole thing looks like I imagined it while reading.

But otherwise it's nothing like in the book. The story is the same but as good as every detail is wrong. The characters are forced to be black and white as if viewers could not follow the (really not very difficult) character development like in the book.

More sad, the movies has nothing of the spirit of the book: the deep love between Ellen and Tom is nowhere to be seen, Philips decision to send Ellen away for one year is now a trivial story about witchcraft and so on.

I have no idea why they took the book for the movie...only the names of the characters and the cities are the same, the rest is what would never have been a bestseller: a trivial story with badly developed characters.

10,000 BC
(2008)

Great Adventure
Sure there is no historical truth in this movie, but its a great adventure! Compared to other "adventure" films it has no silly jokes, no dumb love story without depth and no explosions. Its just a pure and fine adventure movie with some fantasy elements.

I think the acting was pretty good and sure the dialogs are not sharp as in other movies, but hey: they come from the mouth of tribesmen, so the dialogs are exactly how they should be.

I like this film very much since it is reduced to a true adventure story. Its really relaxing to see a movie with a story for adults. No impossible stunts, no silly Hollywood jokes that try to cover a bad story. Pure adventure in a fantastic prehistoric world.

The CGI is wonderful because I never had the feeling there is CGI involved. The soundtrack is amazing, a real masterpiece.

If you like mature adventure films you will like this film. If you like Indy 4 or other silly crap whit impossible stunts, silly jokes and no blood at all, then better stay away.

There Will Be Blood
(2007)

The most depressive movie ever with the worst music ever
Normally I agree with most of IMDb user votings. But not on this movie.

The story would have the potential to be an epic. But instead it is boring and depressing. Minutes of silence (hush) combined with most improper and depressing film music I have ever heard. The actors had faces like wax with as good as no emotion. Even the most emotional scenes are lifeless and sometimes the actors face expression seems to make no sense at all.

The colors and scenes of the film are very bad and leave the impression of a B- or even C-movie.

This movie is awful, boring, depressing, with no color and really bad music. A waste of time.
