Elvis
(2022)

Disappointed - acting great, script and directing not such much
Being generous I'll give this a 6 on solid acting. Script wasn't interesting enough for me, which is surprising since it was based on a very interesting character. Had a tendency to time jump when it really wasn't necessary. I've watch several other biopics multiple times but this is a one and done.

Rocketman
(2019)

Its no Bohemian Rhapsody
If you loved Bohemian Rhapsody you won't necessarily love this. I saw BR 3 times. Would like to see it again. Rocketman...once is enough. Borders on an outright musical which I am no fan. Kind of weird in place, unrealistic is maybe a better word...no its weird. Some great acting though and I found a new level of respect for Elton. Need to see less time spent about his personal issues, eliminate, the 'musical' component, and more concert time like BR. Do that and the flavor of the movie sticks, but way more entertaining. Swing and a miss on this one. Same guy made both movies too.

A Quiet Place
(2018)

Frustrating to those that ask themselves common sense questions
Good acting and interesting twist on a creature move. Because there is almost no talking (subtitles instead) you never get an explanation for many things. Assumptions are made instead. I like Sci-fi, but it still has to somewhat follow the rules of logic and common sense. this move fails on many aspects. For example, if the creatures are blind, how can they move at what appears to be highway speeds without running into anything? If its sonar of some kind, wouldn't it know there is a person a few feet away? What is the purpose of turning on the red lights at night? To warn who? There is no one else around. Why not use white lights so you can see the creatures better? They can't see you. And where the heck is the electricity coming from? God bless those power station workers for keeping the electricity flowing to the farmers with the red lights! Supposedly much of the worlds population has been wiped out even with all the technology and weaponry we have at our disposal. Walking down a dangerous road, would your let your small child take up the rear? What is the last thing you would want in your life if you needed complete silence? Maybe a crying baby? As one reviewer pointed out, if loud sound drowns out daily noise and conversation, why not build on that? Live near a waterfall or build your own noise generators. When a tree creaks do they destroy it too?

I guess they are working on a part 2. I hope they do a much better job presenting the unexplained and invoke common sense next time. Might be a good move.

I Can Only Imagine
(2018)

Very emotional and uplifting movie
While the movie can be very sad there is so much to learn. Enjoyed the story line and music. The movie has an uneven tempo jumping over or through important subjects too fast. However, it is definitely worth seeing.

The 15:17 to Paris
(2018)

Clint's worst movie since Bronco Billy
I'm a big Clint Eastwood fan, but wow this was bad. I have to give him credit for trying to make a move with the actual participants. I did not expect any award nominations and thats not what made the move so bad. Its the fact the last 15 minutes, the premise of the move, is the only interesting part. All the lead in was just way to drawn out and boring. To me it seemed like the movie was made in a week.

Ferdinand
(2017)

Fantastic family movie
Far more funny than I expected. Its hard to find movies I can watch with my children and still be entertained. I would watch this again, which for me is high praise.

Wind River
(2017)

Starts slow, gets better, hard to understand dialogue at times
I was thinking I made a mistake with this movie, the beginning is a snoozer and has little to do with the rest of the movie. After that the pace and interest picks up. This isn't an action flick, its a well written emotional easy to follow story. One major problem, the dialogue is often soft and mumbling. You really have to listen close and be prepared to rewind often. My wife and I were constantly asking each other, what did he say? One demerit for that. One other item that makes for more exciting scenes is they way a rifle shot will throw the bad guy across the room like a mule kick. It doesn't work that way, I would prefer accuracy. This isn't a feel good movie. The acting is excellent and its well made, but this movie is depressing. The setting is depressing. The characters past is depressing. The story line is depressing. Not a first date movie.

Rogue One
(2016)

This franchise has lost its way
For younger viewers Rogue One was probably just wonderful, especially if they have not seen episodes 4-6. I was a boy when the franchise began and its now utterly disappointing. The effects were always and still are unbelievable. Not so much now, but 40 years ago they were jaw dropping compared to anything we had seen. However, what made Star Wars was the story and characters. Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill, and Carrie Fisher were visually appealing, but they were generally pretty good actors with loads of chemistry. And you got to know them because they were around for subsequent episodes. Throw in Alex Guinness, Chewbacca, R2-D2, C-3PO, Darth Vader...what memorable and entertaining characters. There was adventure, romance, humor and the story line was night and day compared to later episodes. Felicity Jones and Diego Luna cannot carry this movie. And who comes up with these dry-as-a-bone side kicks like K-2SO? Watching Rogue my son (14 years) and myself fell asleep. Yes, its that boring and lifeless. I'll pay a couple bucks to rent the movie, but seeing it at a theater and paying ridiculous sums of money is out of the question.

How to fix? Get a better script with some humor and a little sexual tension, actors and side kicks with actual chemistry and presence, and keep them around for awhile. Bring back the Star Wars we all loved and now miss.

Manchester by the Sea
(2016)

Never so happy to see a movie end
The 4 is for the acting otherwise its a 2, which is pretty good, but what a depressing dreary movie. Affleck wasn't the best actor in this movie by the way. I just kept waiting for something interesting to happen...and it didn't. Typically IMDb ratings are pretty close. I'm at a loss as to the high ratings, good acting can't save this movie.
