Cloudburst
(2011)

Sweet movie, occasionally bogged down by the raunchy humor
I just watched this movie and really liked it. Cloudburst is the story of two lesbians who have been together for 31 years. After Dotty falls out of bed when her partner teases her with a vibrator, her granddaughter decides that she needs to be placed in a nursing home. Stella refuses to allow her to do this so Molly, the granddaughter, tricks Dotty into signing over power of attorney to her and then places her in the home.

Stella busts her out and the two flee to Canada in order to get married, along the way picking up Pretince, a young dancer from New York who is traveling to see his sick mother.

The movie is often touching, and the best scenes were generally the parts where Dotty and Stella were just being a typical old couple, either bickering or showing charming displays of affection (often both at the same time). The humorous scenes often feel unnecessary and occasionally bring the movie down from it's full potential. With that said I did laugh at many of them, especially a hilarious scene where Stella and Pretince cross the Canadian border and are stopped by security. Others weren't as good, for example a scene where Dotty accidentally gets in bed with a naked guy.

All in all it is a great movie and addresses the lives of lesbian seniors who are often ignored by the generally youth-centered LGBT entertainment industry.

After Midnight
(1989)

A slightly better than average horror anthology.
Horror anthologies are largely a mixed bag. For every spectacular Tales From the Darkside or Creepshow there is a horrible (and often British) movie like Tales That Witness Madness to drag the genre down.

The first story is a mediocre haunted house tale that didn't really impress me.

The second was about four girls who end up in a bad neighborhood and terrorized by a gas station attendant and three killer dogs. I liked this story and felt that the characters were generally interesting and intelligent, bad choices aside.

The final story is about a telephone operator who is terrorized by a psychopathic stalker. This one was pretty good as well.

The wraparound story is interesting and generally more involved than most other anthologies. It is arguably better than the stories themselves, aside from the ending which I won't spoil.

2-Headed Shark Attack
(2012)

A stunning feat!
I really have to hand it to Syfy. They can take a concept as stupid as this, and actually manage to make a movie that is even dumber than it should be.

The movie is about a group of students who are attacked by a shark with two heads. The fact that it has two heads doesn't really factor into the movie all that much.

After their boat is damaged the kids take refuge on an atoll, but it becomes a race against time as the island will soon sink. I can't be bothered to remember the names of characters in movies I actually like, much less this piece of swill. The main character, who I will simply refer to as cottage cheese thighs, tries to fix the boat after the previous girl is gobbled up. Meanwhile she has to put up with the main human antagonist, an obnoxious jock with really awesome abs. Seriously, those abs are the only reason I sat through this thing. After he tries to escape on his own the other characters, none of whom were particularly interesting start getting eaten in mass. In the end Cottage Cheese Thighs has to try blowing up the shark, but by this time I had lost all interest in the movie without Abs.
