The sixth series firmly establishes the relationship between DCI Jess James and DI Sunny Khan. He is eating alone in restaurants, while her husband might be eating with someone else. Although a strand of long hair on his coat might be reaching it a bit.
There is another cold case. Body parts were found in marshland in London and it seems to be recent.
Once again the episode focuses on a group of people as their stories will eventually converge. Melinda Ricci, a right wing shock jock whose opinion pieces is to entice fury. Her husband might be permanently paralysed.
Juliet Cooper a lecturer with a short fuse, just like her daughter who is constantly gettin g suspended at school. Her husband committed suicide. It seems Juliet might share similar opinions with Melinda.
Then there are some illegal immigrants from Afghanistan. A few have arrived recently on the back of a truck. One has joined his brother. It is a community of former medics now eeking out a living as delivery drivers.
The first episode laid out its stall and you can already see the pieces. I'm just not talking about the body parts in the marshland.
I did get a feeling a lot of it was ripped from newspaper headlines especially with the cultural wars. Cooper in trouble over colonialism. Ricci is anti migrant and there are illegal immigrants about.
It seems the writer wants to tackle issues rather than the whodunnit.

Virdee is based on the books by Amit Dhand. It focuses on maverick Sikh cop Harry Virdee who is married to Saima, a Pakistani Muslim who is a doctor.
His relationship with Saima has caused waves with Harry's father. Even though his father married a Hindu woman. Harry brother in law Riaz is a local drug kingpin.
The first episode opens with a thrilling chase. Harry is after a suspect who might have a lead over a missing asian teenager.
It ends with what might be a serial killer terrorising the Asian community of Bradford.
Virdee had a difficult part before production started. Actor Sacha Dhawan left at the last minute citing scheduling issues. Which tends to be code for he thought the script was rubbish.
Staz Nair was parachuted in very late has Harry Virdee. Joining the rest of the actors who had to adopt a Yorkshire accent. It all sounds exaggerated to me.
The rest of the episode seemed very much like any other trite hard boiled crop drama on British television.

Smokey Robinson and William Shatner in the same episode. It is another episode on the peril of drugs on the young.
Smokey is Sam Jennings a former athlete now a high school coach. He uses drugs because of his painful knees.
Shatner is Mark Ciprio the high school science teacher with a secret. Once upon a time he worked with the main drug dealers by making drugs.
Now several students have died of heroin overdoses. Pepper Anderson goes undercover and she ropes in a rookie policewoman to pose as a student. With devastating consequences.
A dark episode and one that involves middle class students dealing in drugs. Using the influence of their powerful parents to hopefully get them out of trouble.
