The Devil's Disciple is a fine story by a great writer, and one I read at school several decades ago. However, this film is an absolute travesty.
The 3 main characters, particularly Douglas and Lancaster, are horrendously miscast. Douglas plays his part as if he's the village clown, while Lancaster is as stiff as a board, shows no real emotion and one is left wondering how his wife, played by a screeching Janette Scott, could ever put up with him. Or, indeed, him with her.
The real trouble is this is a story about Americans written by an Irishman who lived in England, and subsequently butchered by massive rewriting and editing. The original satire is lost and replaced by horribly misplaced buffoonery.
Absolutely not for me.
