The Woman King
(2022)

Full of action, warmth and surprisingly some humor
Watching this movie, you'd bcared of these women one minute and chuckling with them the next. I can't stop thinking about how well balanced this movie was. And it addressed dark truths (to those who assume they didn't) Please have your own mind. If you want to watch it, watch it. So glad I didn't pay attention to people who tried to convince me otherwise, as well as these fake low reviews trying to discourage me as well.

Viola Davis did an outstanding job and had a team of strong cast mates to help carry the film that is based on true events. I wish them nothing but the best with the support of opening weekend.

Coming 2 America
(2021)

Very fun watch
I went into this film really thinking I wasn't going to like it, but it turned out more entertaining than I thought it would be. If you go into this expecting it to be like the original, you'll be very disappointed. This is PG-13, so the jokes have to be family friendly compared to how it was 30 years ago. Some jokes you can't get away with today. Just enjoy the movie for what it's meant to be: fun and nostalgia. It was nice seeing everyone again and people getting jobs. They did what they could in the middle of a pandemic

Queen & Slim
(2019)

I Instantly got attached to the characters
I walked out with so many emotions after watching this. I beg you all, please support. I have to see this movie again because the last thing I expexted was to constantly shush my mom, as she's rarely that talkative or emotional in a theater, and then I realized...she was attached to Queen and Slim! If characters are willing to do that, especially to my mother, you've done a great job with storytelling my friend. For 2 hours and 12 minutes, I think these were her kids and she never told me.

I'm not hard to please, and wasn't expecting much, only to leave with peace, joy, sadness and love. Excellent job

21 Bridges
(2019)

Good ole action movie
I'll be honest. I went in thinking I wasn't going to like it too much but I'm glad me wanting to support these actors outweighs any skepticism. I don't think the trailers gave it justice.

Chadwick Boseman is just a good actor and Stephan James was right behind him. It reminded me of those throwback cop movies that aren't oversimplified but still entertaining enough to watch while sipping a beer on the couch.

I think the actors were really cool taking on a movie like this that would be considered "beneath them". Sometimes all it takes is a simple and great story without all the CGI we've been rolling in over the past 10 years.

The Upside
(2017)

It's a remake, but a good one
Face it, remakes get done. And if you go into this with an open mind just willing to have fun and enjoy a good story, you'd end up saying the same. So ignore the negative reviews purposely trying to bash this film and go see it for yourself if you want to. It's not the best movie in the world, but it's definitely a movie that will leave you smiling in the end.

Kevin Hart really held his own in this movie to the point where I'm hoping he will consider doing more movies like this in the future as he showed good range for a comedian. The match-up with Bryan Cranston and Nicole Kidman was brilliant. I would definitely recommend this for a chill movie night to enjoy with your family.

The Equalizer 2
(2018)

Worth the Wait
It's hard to say which one I loved more, but if I think hard enough, I'll give EQ2 a couple of more points over EQ1 but I can't wait to add part two to my collection. I was so emotionally invested in the sequel, but I think that's what makes it so good simply because the stories are more on a personal level and it allows you to see another side of McCall that you could have possibly missed in the first one now that we already know who he is. The action sequences were very well balanced out and kept you on edge. It didn't even feel like I was in there two hours I was so caught up in the journey. Great work. Plan on seeing it again before it leaves theaters

Black Panther
(2018)

T'Challa! T'Challa! T'Challa
First of all, I'm glad that great ratings are continuing to climb on this film despite the phony low reviews that have been given here. My experience after watching it twice and also planning watching a third time, believe the hype.

Ryan Coogler does an excellent job and the actors are incredible. He knows who his strong actors are and they deliver 110%. He made Michael B. Jordan's role as Killmonger so complex that you didn't know whether to dislike him or be on his side despite how menacing he was. I cannot wait to see him in Creed 2 so I can be reminded it that he really is a good person lol!

This movie doesn't really show heavy action for Black Panther (you get that intro in Civil War) but it introduces you more to how he operates as the new king, and the choices he will have to make. However, leaves you satisfied just the same.

Ludwig Gorranson who does an excellent job with the music score, is no stranger when it comes to working with Ryan, as he has worked with him in Fruitvale Station and Creed. The music score is a character within itself, as they literally speak for Black Panther/T'Challa and Killmonger during their quiet moments. The research and tours with these excellent musicians during his visits to so many countries in Africa really showed, and I understand why Coogler likes working with him.

I do hope people do not fall for these bad reviews which are obviously there to try to scare people away. My parents are not even into comics and they enjoyed every second. For a lengthy movie, it didn't even feel like you were there that long. Go see the movie for yourselves. Everyone isn't lying when you hear the majority saying something is that great.

Power Rangers
(2017)

Amazing to see my childhood with the younger generation
Even though this story is mostly based on character development, I believe they did a really good job keeping it entertaining for the new generation's introduction to them, as well as the original fans.

I love the twist, and the signs of positive diversity with switching around the races of the characters. Even with the ethnic background being switched, the actors did an amazing job bringing the same personality traits to that particular ranger.

I give it a 7 out of 10 only because the excitement in me wished they would have started in on the action a bit sooner, but like I said, it was still entertaining at the most so there is no heavy complaint in my book.

Looking forward to part two with us getting to meet the new green ranger. Whether it is a boy or girl, they have some pretty big shoes to fill.

THUMBS UP!

24: Legacy
(2016)

Ignore the critics
This show is full of action and suspense. The ratings had a lot to do with the super bowl. I never really understood why they show premiers after an exciting yet draining super bowl game, especially one that goes into overtime for the first time. It's late and people are ready for bed afterwards. I couldn't even watch it when I wanted to and I am a strong believer of helping with ratings.

A lot of people who are fans of the original 24 also have a hard time not comparing this one to the original, but I truly believe that Corey Hawkins is holding his own. It's called a reboot for a reason. It's not supposed to be the same. The sooner fans realize that, the better off they will be. If you are a true fan, I encourage you to to go into this series with an open mind and accept the fresh faces.

The Birth of a Nation
(2016)

A Story Relevant for today...for EVERYONE
The movie was well written and tastefully done. It wasn't as graphic as I thought it would be, and I certainly appreciate that, as I had already prepared myself to close my eyes throughout most of the movie. The film mostly requires you to listen.

Don't get me wrong, you cringed and did more than cringe in moments, you will experience different emotions throughout the film, but it seems as if Nate Parker as a first time director tried to be considerate of our stomachs so you can pay attention to most of the dialogue and get to know who Nat Turner and his family were before any of that took place.

I'm glad I followed my first mind and ignored the obviously biased "epic fail" review that immediately started floating around social media the day before the film started to try and discourage people from going.I don't think the author realized the movie was only "based on true events" and not the "biography of Nat Turner" before shouting about inaccuracies. However, I am aware that this film is not for everyone depending on how you go into a movie theater with certain expectations.

The acting was great, our diverse crowd left the theater speechless and positive conversations took place. Even though the unfortunate Hurricane Matthew has taken place, I believe through word of mouth, this independent film will continue to rise in numbers and positive reviews despite of a few spewing negativity.

See the movie for yourself. Don't let anyone tell you how to feel and whether you should go or not go. Do what you want and get what you need from the movie personally.

Uncle Buck
(2016)

Started off slow but immediately picked up
Why people based their opinion on the first few episodes is beyond me. And personally, the pilot wasn't even all that bad. It's very rare I chuckle through a pilot but the fact that I did, I knew it would have potential. Now that it's been on for a couple of weeks, the jokes have turned my chuckling into full laughter.

If people really want these positive family shows to take off, they really need to give them a chance instead of immediately brushing it off. There's so much negative shows that we always have to flee children out the room at all times of day, and the second we try to introduce a show that can work for everybody, we're impatient.

The kids are talented, I love the fact that the parents are hardworking people trying to bring positive direction with their children, with even Uncle Buck learning to do better. No, there will never be one like the original Uncle Buck, but this version is not competing with the original. The characters have honored him by making a story of their own. I will continue to watch.

Roots
(2016)

One of the most inspiring stories ever
Anyone that does not care for remakes will automatically give this a thumbs down, but I can guarantee you, they went into this remake for the wrong reasons with the wrong ideas. This remake was meant to touch on subjects that could not be told or shown in the original because of those times, and I do believe they did a tremendous job. Every actor in this series told each story quite well, and I most certainly loved how they encouraged you to take these DNA tests during advertisement to find out who you are. There are so many "not another slave movie" fanatics now, that if they had watched this movie, I believe they would be very ashamed that they would have said it. The movie/story was not made to get you angry as tough as it was to watch, but it was meant to inspire, to teach us not to complain, and to be better. Our ancestors had a very tough time, but through it all still managed to love one another and stick together, even when they had to be separated, but here we are "not wanting to be reminded". A+ for the production. The screenplay was on point, and I will be adding the movie to my collection, and encourage younger people not to be ashamed and always find strength from any situation you face

Creed
(2015)

Tastefully Done and Realistic
I enjoyed this story from start to finish! All the actors did a phenomenal job in their performances and Michael B. Jordan really brought a feel to his character when it came to being the sun of Apollo. I really appreciate how realistic the story was. It told the truth about a young man's life and struggle without all the cheesy things that go along with most plots. I am really hoping as well as looking forward to this turning into a franchise and for a part two to be made. Excellent and beyond. I will be going back to the theater to watch this again. It's very well worth going twice, and believe me, that does NOT happen often.

The Leftovers
(2014)

Has the same feel as "Resurrection"
I'm late at watching this show so I'm starting on the first season before I start the second. It's okay, but I'm a bit disappointed it reminds me of "Resurrection" which was a show I liked and it got canceled. I'll never understand those situations. But this show is entertaining at the most. I love shows that keep me guessing so I will keep up with it.

The acting is top notch and I love the fact they are making the stories very believable even without saying a word at times. I am very much looking forward to seeing where this goes. I'm also thankful I have Demand to help me catch up on the show.

Unconditional
(2012)

If You're Used to Junk, You Won't Appreciate This Amazing Story/Performance
Normally when the box office tries to give a story like this the boot, I know nine times out of ten, it's a great film, and this film was one of them. Great performance, the cinematography was excellent, and the performances were outright spectacular.

I'll admit, I went into this movie a little nervous. Although I knew it would be a good story, I was worried about feeling sad all the way through because of the background. Don't get me wrong, I was sad at times, but I was very thrilled that humor was also added in the film.

I'm not surprised that that the box office slept on this movie, or many others for that matter. People are so used to seeing, action, sex and cussing every five minutes, you forget how well a clean and inspirational story can be told. I think people forget it's okay to have a peaceful story, and learn from it as well as be inspired.

Michael Ealy shows his ranges as any actor in a brilliant way, and I think this movie would be one of my favorites with him in it.

Please, if you want to know about overcoming your obstacles, giving yourself another chance at knowing life, give this movie a try and ignore the critics. They were 100% wrong on this one. IT'S GREAT!

Straight Outta Compton
(2015)

I'm Going To See It Again!!! INCREDBILE
OMG! I never go into movies with high expectations, but this one I did, and I'm glad I did because it completely MATCHED my high expectations! The story was beautifully told, casting and portrayals on POINT! The actors made me feel laughter, sadness and anger! I left out of that theater proud.

I will be taking my parents to go see this with me so they can know the people I was born into listening to. They only watch them now on commercials and love watching them in movies, but never knew their background on where they came from and how they got started. They always took me to go see history so I figure I will return the favor and take them to see some of mine. The crazy part is, the story that's told is STILL relevant to what is going on today.

Amazing job. I have nothing bad to say about this story at all. Simply incredible. 10 points!

Annie
(2014)

Great Family Movie for Today's Generation
I took my nine year old cousin to see this. He's a boy so I didn't think he was going to like it. I told him that the movie was about a girl and he still wanted to go and enjoyed it. As a true fan of the original Annie, I really enjoyed this one as well. I really don't understand anyone who would give a negative review on this. It's just a remake. Not made to be like the original but from a different perspective of one's mindset and as a tribute to the original. If you have kids, nieces or nephews and would like to have a fun movie night with them, this is a movie that is recommended. It has nice twist to it and I'm glad they made it to relate to today's generation of kids.

The Book of Negroes
(2015)

Learned things I never knew
To make the long story short, this movie proves that you can never learn too much when it comes to historic events. My mother is almost 60, and she went into this movie thinking that she wasn't going to like it but was drawn in as well, learning things she never knew.

All of the actors did a superb job at bringing these individuals to life. They made you chuckle at time as well as cry.

I also appreciated the beautiful love story in between the education. Aunjanue Ellis and Lyriq Bent made you fall in love with Aminata and Chekura immediately, and it showed how much strength and beauty people had through the roughest time. I am glad those two are getting the recognition they deserve for they have always been great actors!

I have never read the book, but because of being introduced to historic events from this movie, has driven completely to read the book and soak all the information in that I can. Hopefully this will inspire others as well, who haven't had the pleasure of reading the book.

TEN POINTS AND BEYOND!

Fifty Shades of Grey
(2015)

Reader of all three books and enjoyed it
There are two reasons why people wouldn't like this movie: they didn't read the book, or they expected the movie to be exactly like the book. I don't think people realize that most movies based from the books usually don't compare to the book. Stop going into it with high expectations like it's going to be exactly equal to the book and just enjoy it. All key points from the book were not in the movie as expected. This is one of those movies, either you will like it or you won't ( for book readers and non.) I've read all three books, and I think the director did an amazing job fitting most of the points in. It was also very humorous. There will be a sequel.

Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B
(2014)

Oh, No. Just Oh, No
It is rare, and I mean rare that I give a negative critique all the way through even through bad productions. I normally give even bad productions the benefit of the doubt. As a matter of fact, I have never even given a bad production a low scale like this. For the first time in HISTORY I have rated a movie a 1. Drumline 2 wasn't even this bad compared to this film. This was so, so disrespectful to Aaliya's legacy, and I'm just hoping and praying that Missy and Timbaland, whenever they feel they want to, will do this movie justice the way it is supposed to be done. The fact that they weren't even apart of this production, and the parents even said no to the production, why would you even waste your time writing and producing this garbage!? Not only that, you didn't even have the rights to put any of her best hits in the film, which is a HUGE part of Aaliya's story. If you're going to tell a story, tell it right. Don't tell it based on an unauthorized book and Wikpedia. The actors didn't even come close to matching the original people, and even though Ship was only the slightest exception, she did not do Aaliyah justice at all. It didn't seem like she even studied on how Aaliyah, spoke, how she moved or anything. The timeline of the story was even off, and most of the movie felt rushed. I feel really bad for those actors. They will never be able to live this one down because of someone's poor decision of greed and a buck. I'm just so upset. It's bad if Timbaland is even making a mockery out of you because you didn't listen in the first place to leave this story alone! smh....

Drumline: A New Beat
(2014)

Not bad, but not good either
I never go into movies with high expectations, especially for television. I just always look at them for entertainment. As for this movie, I knew it wasn't going to compare to the original, but I just didn't particularly care for the writing for this film. Everything seemed sort of rushed by them trying to talk about what happened to past/original characters, and a lot of lines were a bit corny. It just didn't seem "real" you know? However, I did enjoy the band scenes. I was also a little disappointed in how they even wrote in the lead character. They made it seem like she was a female Myles, when I just wish her situation could have been different and maybe she was just having a hard time simply because she was just a female on the line. Why give us a part two when we are looking at a person with the exact same issues? And if she was a bit like Myles, they could have had Myles talk to her about his past experiences. It just seemed kind of rushed to me. It had the potential to be way better than what it was.

Black Jesus
(2014)

Born and raised in the church and I'm laughing
There is really nothing wrong with this show. It's comical and actually shows positive values and will help people young and old who don't quite know about Christ, or even going to church for that matter. Jesus is actually showing the morals and giving scripture, the only thing is he's cussing when he's doing it. Why? He's from Compton! He's in the hood. This is based off somebody's imagination, if Jesus was in the hood and could say what he wanted, how would he say it? How do people feel about Christ and what would you actually want to say to Christ? I'm born and raised in the church and I'm laughing. It's hilarious! My father who has been in the church for over 30 years was even laughing. He didn't know what it was, he just happened to sit down to see what I was watching. My point is, you really have to an open mind and not jump to conclusions so fast about what something is about until you sit down and watch it. It may not be everyone's taste, but it doesn't make it bad just because you disagree with how someone is presenting their imagination if Jesus was from Compton.

Baggage Claim
(2013)

Predictable Yet Fun Movie
I am a movie watcher, so if you're watching this movie to see something new, you will be disappointed and give it a low rating saying it was a waste of time. However, if you want to watch something for the cuteness, fun and the giggles, this is a great movie to watch. Although I knew exactly what was going to happen from the very beginning, it was really a cute and fun loving story. I laughed and I enjoyed it. It's a movie that makes you feel good, especially on rainy days. I smiled all the way through. So please, don't judge the movie because it's just "predictable." Judge based on how it makes you feel at the end of the day. If it makes you leave with smiles, after relaxing on the couch drinking hot cocoa or eating a bowl of popcorn, the movie did its job. Stop being so deep and just enjoy yourself for a change lol!
