Marriage Story
(2019)

Wow! Now I know why I don't want to get married!
Extremely well acted and directed with an intese style of reality. I also liked the writing, which has an interesting mix of humor and tragedy. Unfortunately, I found the pacing to be at times slow and drawn out which brings out a tinge of boredom.

The Favourite
(2018)

Sumptuous adaptation.
This is a beautiful looking film, with amazing production design and fantastic direction, not to mention the brilliant Oscar winning performance of Olivia Coleman., who portrays sad and tough times of the barren Queen wonderfully. She plays the woman with just the right amount of insanity.

Rachel Weitz and Emma Stone are also very good in the villainous roles of the Queens right hand women. It's hard to say which is actually the nastiest.

Very good film that takes some time to get rolling along, but once it gets into the 2nd act, it really is interesting..

Escape Room
(2019)

The whole movie is a spoiler alert!
This movie borrowed heavily from the Disturbing Behaviour films. A bunch of young made for TV actors due their best with an overwrought script, but ultimately this is a very mundane film. It's not scary, really as it plays out more as a suspense film than a horror movie. Not very good.

Can You Ever Forgive Me?
(2018)

McCarthy is terrific!
Melissa McCarthy redeems her career big time in this highly entertaining film. I was beginning to think that she had given up her career to poorly written and directed comedies, but she's a real stand out in this Oscar nominated, dramatic performance! Way to go Melissa!

Aquaman
(2018)

Ho hum.
This film is highlighted by spectacular visual effects and production design but, unfortunately starts to look and feel like almost every other big budget super hero film to come down the track in the past 10 years. The battle scenes are redundant, and everyone just looks so shiny and bright. The script is overwrought with melodrama and lame humour and the acting is just okay. I never cared for Aquaman in comic book form, and this movie doesn't really make me feel that much better about the character.

Ralph Breaks the Internet
(2018)

Not very compelling sequel.
I did like the original Wreck it Ralph quite a bit. It was fresh and fun with a lot of great visuals and some entertaining voice work. This disappointing sequel still features some eye popping visuals and some strong voice work from the main stars, but the story itself seem to be driven by an extended commercial created by Disney to help support some of the new franchises they recently snapped up over the last few years. There's also some fairly week voice work attempted by some fairly major stars. I guess some actors are just better off playing femme fatales or sexy super heroes. Watch the original again if you want true entertainment.

Fosse/Verdon
(2019)

Entertaining
What makes this show really great is the fantastic acting of Williams and Rockwell. They're just perfection!

You
(2018)

Superb psych thriller.
This movie is all about Penn Badgely and his amazing performance! This is a highly entertaining TV series, well written and directed, and worth a Netflix binge watch. Good stuff!

The Predator
(2018)

Where's Arnold Schwarzenegger when you really need him?
Why did they spend the money on this terrible movie. Every one tries really hard to make this work, but they fail miserably. It looks okay, because it's shot in the dark, but most of the actors here are just working to pad their resumes and their paychecks. Hugely disappointing piece of trash that just shouldn't have been made.

Night School
(2018)

Yuck!
I'm not a fan of the stars at all, and couldn't even make it through the first 30 minutes.

Smallfoot
(2018)

Did this movie really need the musical numbers?
Mildly entertaining family animation, which attempts to teach about climate change along with some amusing encounters with yetis (and bears, they were great!). It's adequately voiced by an all star cast that includes Channing Tatum and Danny Devito amongst others. The annoying part of the film is its overproduced musical numbers, that just seemed unnecessary.

Peppermint
(2018)

Why is this movie called PEPPERMINT?
This movie proves that Jennifer Garner really is an action star, as she viciously fights her way through the bad guys in this overwrought melodrama, that really plays out more like a super sized episodes of Jennifer's old series ALIAS, which kind of launched her career. Now if she could just focus on being a real star, in stead of tabloid foder.

Luis & the Aliens
(2018)

Cute..
Fun film for the very young, but some of the voice work is weak. The story and animation doesn't really stand up to modern animation protocol. It's just adequate compared to Disney/Pixar et al.

The Happytime Murders
(2018)

NO!
Do not watch this horrible film. What has happened to Melissa McCarthy's career?

Extremely Wicked, Shockingly Evil and Vile
(2019)

Despite being about a conviction, it lacks any true sense of one.
The real standout in this film for me is Lliy Collins' fantastic performance as Liz, who was probably one of Ted Bundy's saddest victims because he manipulated her in such horrific mental ways. Zac Efron has never been one of my favorite actors, and even though he has a strong resemblance to Bundy, his performance seems forced. There is a great supporting cast here, but the direction is pedestrian at best, and the script is not much more than a superficial retelling of history.

Crazy Rich Asians
(2018)

The Housewives of Singapore
This film is an opulent travelogue of glamorous Singapore. It's really nothing more than a grandiose soap opera, and hollywoods attempt to diversify its content as politically correct as possible. It's well acted by almost perfectly crafted beautiful people. I live in Vancouver, Canada where crazy rich Asians are a dime a dozen (mostly in the enclave of Richmond, where fancy, expensive super cars liter the streets). So I can only guess at its accuracy. Even the gay character is nothing more than a chubby stereotype. It's overrated for sure, and the perfect film for racist middle America.

Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again
(2018)

Pleasant but slightly disappointing.
The first thing we have to do is all agree that what holds the Mama Mia! films together is the timeless music of ABBA. And this film does an adequate job of highlighting some of their great hits (Cher's version of Fernando is fantastic!), along with some lesser known songs that were mostly album fillers back in the 70's.

Unfortunately some of the young supporting players weren't very good singers, but the main cast was entertaining.

This is just an okay follow up to Mama Mia! which starred Meryl Streep, who's very much missed in this sequel, with only a few brief scenes. But Lily James and Amanda Seyfried have surprisingly good voices.

It was worth watching on cable, but I'm glad I didn't pay to see it.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom
(2018)

Sigh...here we go...again...
There are some spectacular, eye popping visual effects and some clever high action set pieces, but this movie is just so...redundant. This is the same story over and over again, told 5 times now. The Brittney Spear song "Oops, I did it Again", kept running through my mind as a bunch of runaway dinosaurs reek havoc, sometimes in humorous, off centre ways. The same cast of cookie cutter characters, spew and over act some very melodramatic and overwrought dialogue. It's just not that entertaining anymore. This movie grossed about $1.4 billion world wide, so I'm sure we'll be seeing it...again!

Searching
(2018)

Good modern mystery.
Well acted, well written with plenty of twists and turns and smoothly directed. It's sad and a bit melodramatic at times. Keep some tissues handy. Well edited and does a great job of exploring how someone can get lost in the mires and pitfalls of social media. Entertaining and worth the time to watch.

Life of Pi
(2012)

Brilliant
One of the great cinematic experiences in modern film. Ang Lee's direction is impeccable and it's a visual feast. Love this movie! 😂

Skyscraper
(2018)

Ho hum
Lots of fancy eye candy and a crisp pace highlight this otherwise mundane and cliche driven "The Rock" action flick. Dwayne Johnson does his best to keep his feet firmly entrenched in his action hero boots, but at times comes across as unintentionally funny in some scenes that made me laugh out loud, but I'm sure weren't meant to. Overall, it is well acted and, despite it's copycat premise, it's still fairly entertaining.

The First Purge
(2018)

Can you say Black Exploitation?
Terrible movie. I thought they stopped making these type of films in the 70s. It's loud and crass, brutally violent and full of foul language uttered by a bunch of wannabe TV actors. It's poorly written and lamely directed. Not good at all. Watch the Purge episode of Rick and Morty. At least it's supposed to be funny.

Slumlord
(2015)

Not very good.
Week acting and poor writing and direction don't do much to lift this banal suspense thriller up from the doldrums. There is one jump scare that was particularly effective, wherein I jumped right out of my chair. I gave the movie an extra star because of it. But really, that was it.

Bohemian Rhapsody
(2018)

This movie made me cry...
I had the pleasure of seeing Queen live when I was a teenager in the late 70s here in Vancouver. I was a big fan, as were most of my friends. I still know the words to the songs and I think I practically wore out my vinyl copy of Night at the Opera from playing it so much. I'm pretty sure I drove my parents crazy playing Bohemian Rhapsody, which I sang along to at the top of my voice while locked away in my room. Ah, good times!

While I was watching this movie, I was worried that I was going to be disappointed and that this was going to be nothing more than a high class MOW. But, thanks to the absolutely amazing performance of Rami Malek as Freddie Mercury, a terrific supporting cast and some crisp dialogue and really great film and sound editing, the movie turned itself around, and by the time we reached the impeccable recreation on the Live Aid concert at the end, I was in tears, a very, very rare thing for me.

Although I don't think it will the best picture Oscar (that will go to Roma), I'm sure that Malek will take home best actor honours.

Hereditary
(2018)

There's nothing sublime in this horror.
This intense and compelling horror film has it all as it follows the ultimate dysfunctional families descent into madness. Supernatural mind games, extreme and bloody horror, ghosts and things that go bump in the night. It also highlights some powerhouse performances, especially Toni Collette, who's a real stand out as the terrified, put-upon mom. The direction is skilled and competent, with great use of camera and lighting that helps propel the story forward. The script goes a little over the top as it creeps up on its Rosemary's Baby style ending. Overall, I found the whole film highly entertaining.
