Shaft
(2019)

the funniest part of this movie...
Is yet to happen... and will NOT till a few thousand years from now...when the human race evolves to the point of inventing shovels to dig this up and understand just HOW we went extinct... and then laugh themselves, yet again, to extinction at how SOME producer thought that this would ACTually sell tickets... i, originally, was going to give this 5 stars because the comment jr makes when his father offers him a drink with lime, about the lime being alkaline, got a half smile...but then i came HERE and found out that that was a mistake, not inTENtionally funny... sam jackson, though, laughed aaaaaaaallllllllllllllllllllll the way to the bank.

Dark Phoenix
(2019)

do NOT believe the bad reviews...
It doesn't deserve a 10, but...i'd say a solid 7.5, and i'm a hard marker...

what do people WANT, after all??? this was a good story, VERY well told...not all that predictable, either, though i'm very(too) good at that... there are reasons(except for the very end) that GOT was as good as it was...this installment has many of those qualities...that's all i want to say since i hate spoilers... all i know is that i really hate when i miss a movie(in 4DX, esPECIALly) because a bunch of kids can't tell what a good movie is... maybe it wasn't as good as the (comic) book...

Godzilla: King of the Monsters
(2019)

yawn...predictable...bad...and if THAT doesn't qualify as a spoiler, then i've wasted my time...
The 4DX system(multi sensual stimulation...wind/whisps of air 'shooting by' your ears..like bullets or shrapnel? water...mist...rain...strobe lighting...sometimes well integrated...sometimes it seems as if they just feel the need to use it a few times since it's part of the sytem...and a chair that rocks, rolls AND punches...and does SOMEthing to the back of your legs that i still haven't figured out yet...water or air, or? tiny elves doing a mini bellows imitation...anyways, i shouldn't survived THIS movie, if it were set right... ; - ) of the theater i saw it in saved it from being just another weak storied(despite the 'symbiotic process' mumbo jumbo...oKAY...! so we're making ourselves near, if not TOtally extinct...along with much of the rest of life on the planet..get OVER it! or DO something about it besides read about it...otherwise, yes. it's true. i'm well studied in a few different fields and humans are unlikely to make it through this century...aside from those few(relatively...this could be a few million, overall) that do survive what waits ahead if we don't stop, like...years ago...and look around... anyone seem to be do anything but business as usual, no matter HOW much airplay this is getting lately? so get USED to it, people...humans have seen the best they ever will... we are headed into a combination of events that would make us welcome the destruction seen in this film...rising waters and storms being only a small part...) movie with BIG effects...and, like i've said...i feel sorry if you didn't get the 4DX treatment...expensive, but...MADE for this sort of film... predictable...and despite my best efforts at suspension of disbelief(a bad sign alREADy since we're not supposed to even NOtice that we've been drawn into a 'fictional story'...), things happened along the way that kept making me say, 'uh uh...no way...'. so, okay...15 and under...this should fly...otherwise...YOU fly....save your money...see it on a large tv if you REALly have to...i thought, from the reviews HERE, it would be good...now here's the kicker...the OTHER movie i saw got BAD reviews here, but...i have a subscription and can see movies all day, if i want...so i took THAT one in just before(an hour break betwee) 'godzilla'. the new x-men was what i'd hoped 'godzilla' would be...so it was a reversal for me... decide for yourselves, of course...i liked 'dark phoenix' a lot...easy 7.5.

Avengers: Endgame
(2019)

love requires the potential for sacrifice...
This movie, pretty much, had it all...great action and drama...heroic valor...and comedy, in all the right places... plus there were great cameos...it's long, but it doesn't seem as long as it is because the pacing is very good... definitely recommeneded.

The Dark
(2018)

i'm surprised at the low rating...
I don't really understand what people expected/wanted from this film if they rated it so low...i'm not 'typically' a horror fan...but i do know the components, be it classical, a la poe or lovecraft, Romero, etc.. i feel there are only two kinds of movies...good and bad...sometimes i like the bad ones, anyways...sometimes i don't like the good ones, though i recognize they're well done... the only detractor that i noticed in this film was the, obvious, lack of 'big budget' makeup...but cMON...if that's your main bug, you must be, somewhat, ignorant of 'the larger picture'...an interesting story well told. if your main critique is the main character's acting? please don't forget that the character is still very young...much less the actress...and there wasn't a WHOLE lot of range required from the role. she could convey what she was thinking/feeling well enough for me to read...and, since her actions followed my interpretations, i'd say she did a good job. the storytelling is modern...backstory provided by flashbacks...i liked the way this was done... and the pacing, i thought, was excellent...not TOO overdriven...with pauses enough to catch one's breath... all in all, a pretty good watch. not an 8, but a SOLid 7.3...i just wanted to balance it out a bit more justly... if you're on the fence, try it for 15/20 minutes...that SHOULD give you an idea of whether it's for you or not...

Cold Pursuit
(2019)

REALLY? a six point something?
I don't think it was worth the eight i gave it, but...definitely a 7.5. and that's a high rating from me. first off, it was surprising at how good it was. mostly through subtleties of coenesque, dark(and wry) humor. it's violent, so if you have trouble with that, don't bother. what i was expecting was 'yet aNOTHer liam neeson revenge flick'. and, yes...there's an element of that. and that's where the comparison stops... i'm not disappointed i didn't see this on a large screen...some of the colorado cinematography will take your breath away... but i AM a bit jangled by my smugness over my expecting this to be garbage. it was an entertaining piece of work...even though we've seen movies LIKE this, this should, over time, become a quiet, cult gem...

Uri: The Surgical Strike
(2019)

predictable, cliched/unimaginative...
Maybe this passes for an 8.0 rating from people of that region of the world...maybe it has a lot to do with nationalism. but, overall, it would seem that this doesn't belong in the global market. unless you've never seen war films made from MANy other countries...not a complicated relationship in the movie. and the ace up the sleeve ending was just sooooooooo predictable...i watched it all the way through just to see why it might have such a high rating...i guess a large number of people just don't know any better...

Serenity
(2019)

i kinda figured the score would be low...it's a choppy ride...but interesting and worth the ride...
The movie may even have 'holes' in the plot...it's one of those that bears a second viewing b/c there's a lot going on that doesn't really connect till later...just like lots of other movies...but this one's a bit different. quirky. mcconaughey's performance is VERY good... and the FEEL of the movie is a red herring. but i'll let you figure out what i mean by this... if you're intelligent and patient, i think you'll be amused when it comes to its conclusion. it didn't deserve an 8. but it ALso doesn't deserve anything less than a 7. so i thought i'd pad it a bit. glad i stuck with it...almost ditched in the first hour or so... happy sailing...and catch that FISH!

The Orville
(2017)

Comedy sci-fi does NOT a star trek make....
Don't get me wrong...I think if you're adolescent, or of adolescent emotional development, no matter your age, then THIS is DEFinitely for you... otherwise I thought it was amusing that people might even comPARE this to Star Trek/Discovery... I don't think Orville is TERrible...it does a fun job of making comedy with sci-fi...and they NAILED the music! But it almost seems as if McFarlane got in touch with a bunch of people and had them AND their friends make comparisons to gain some free publicity from controversial responses... that would be clever... But what a joke THAT is!!! Comparing this scatalogical mediocrity with Discovery...did anyone see the s02 opener??? Movie house quality... off the HOOK good!

The Keeping Hours
(2017)

This sort of movie is NOT easy to do....
And yet I was aMAZED at how well the story was handled...by ALL the principals...writer, director, actors, photographer, art direction, lighting.... I thought it went a bit over the top, sentimentally, for a moment very near the end... I'm pretty sure, if you made it that far, you'll probably not notice... As far as the low raters are concerned??? Just a bunch of kids expecting a horror film, acting out their frustration/s... Well done, enjoyable film...

The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then The Bigfoot
(2018)

Flawed, but enjoyable
It's formulaic and clunky...seems like they may've had to cut out portions that would've made it feel less 'choppy'. The soundtrack, in case noone noticed, is SO close to ''E.T." that I wouldn't be surprised if I read about a plagiarism suit against the film/composer. I know the music very well. I'm pretty sure I liked it as much as I did because of Sam Elliott. And it was great seeing Larry Miller again, as well. It wasn't great...but I found it enjoyable....

Close
(2019)

SERiously, guys?
Because i know that's what it was....a lotta guys typing with one hand over their groins...scared of getting their nuts kicked in by a goyil...you neanderthals...women have been fighting in the israeli army for a long time...i wouldn't want to go up against one... sokay...it wasn't the BEST movie of its sort i've ever seen...and it was predictable in ways that movies like this are... but i thought it was well done enough so that i just kicked back with some popcorn and took it for what it was...a good action/adventure movie... don't believe the haters...

Puzzle
(2018)

wow...a six POINT? doesn't speak well of imdb reviewers, to be honest...
Or maybe you're all just very young... the movie didn't cover ground that hasn't been covered before, granted. but that's true of most movies at this point in our species's history. so it comes down to the way it's told. and this one is told sparingly and, at times, poetically and funny. lots of it is bittersweet. and the ending will probably prove unsatisfying to many. but this, all told, is VERY good storytelling. deceptively simple, but rich in substance. and lots is being said without any dialogue. it's an 'art film'. parts reminding me of a hopper painting. obviously not for everyone. it's simple. but it's not FOR the simple...

Lost Highway
(1997)

noone does dreamscapes like lynch
I haven't read the other reviews...i'm sure lots of them try and explain what 'this movie is about'. they should become psychoanalysts...i'm pretty sure if we asked LYNCH 'what it was about', he'd say, 'beats me'. it's as if had storyboarded a dream...and it's something to experience...robert blake playing 'the midget'. a character lynch seems to employ in lots of his work, was fantastic...plus i hadn't seen him in anything in quite a while... i saw this film for the second time last night, thinking it might make more sense... and what i realized is that some stories impact me viscerally and are every bit as valid as the ones that 'make sense'.

Peppermint
(2018)

see it if you need 'revenge therapy'...
I consider myself to be an intelligent, responsible adult...and i recognize what a letdown some parts of the human species can be...and, while not one for revenge mySELF, i LOVE seeing a good revenge movie...and this one CERtainly qualifies... i don't care about some of the 'implausibilities'...i'm SURE that occupied some of the commentary before mine...just a lotta OBviously 'bad guys' getting killed in all SORTS of ways happens to be VERY therapeutic at times for me...if you can relate then just pop some corn, kick back and enjoy...no revelations/deep insights...just people gettin their comeuppance...

The Predator
(2018)

aw c'mooooooooon....it wasn't THAT bad...!
What is you people's PROBlem? you underrate some, overrate others... when i'm considering seeing a movie, i gauge my expectations according to available information...genre, director, actors...and reviews. this one woulda been fun in 4DX(a multifaceted tech used by some of the Pathe theaters here in NL). but i shined it on b/c of the reviews. in any case, it was entertaining... i don't care if part of it(the beginning) was a lot like the first one. tribute. appreciated, if that was the case. it IS, after all, one of the movies that gave the schwarz some credibility. and a big surprise, overall, i remember. i don't even care if it was formuLAic..(the kid and dogs...'gotta have that youth appeal and endangered innocent', i hear the screenplay book writers whispering). i thought it had good pacing(it broke from action every once in a while), very well done action scenes, even though we've seen these many times before by now. and, best of all, they used lots of 'coolness' cliches in the right places. so that they were funny again. there were, imo, subtle touches of good writing... and i exPECT a movie of this sort to NOT be credible! so if that's ANYone's complaint, my response is...'ya gotta be KIDding me!' in any case, i thought this movie deserve about a 7.0, overall...so i gave it an 8.0 to balance out the haters. granted it's FAR from the best of its sort...but it wasn't BAD! it was...'ok'. and i just don't know what more people want, reaLIStically, from a movie of this sort...just kick back and have fun, people. it's MADE for that...

Between Worlds
(2018)

I think Cage is hiLARious!
But I DID stop watching when I was convinced that it was soft porn masquerading as sci-fi SOMEthing... I thought I'd better check the rating here again...i i sure didn't seem to be consistent with the number i saw here when i first considered watching it. Sho nuff... MUCH more consistent with MY experience...t th woman/mother lead's acting was so bad, I began wondering what was going on... the dialogue/writing wasn't helping any... But I kept watching because Cage IS hilarious!!! It seems as if, at least beginning when he goes back to their place and starts doing Elvis at the door! I had the feeling he'd decided that he was going to singlehandedly save the movie by going nuts... I, unfortunately, will not be going back to watch the rest...so I'm not sure just how far out Cage is going to go with this one...I DID get him to promise to report in when flying overhead...

Jack Ryan
(2018)

Not GREAT, but REAL watchable...
I don't get all of the ridiculously low ratings and criticism... maybe it's because I didn't read any of the books? In any case, yes, it doesn't break any new ground. But it provided a season of tense, tight entertainment, if this is a genre that you find appealing. There, of course, is lots of violence, some of it graphic... but I thought all of the particulars of good visual storytelling were present. Nothing TOO over the top... with good pacing. And it didn't keep going around in circles like I felt shows like 24 seemed to do... they're captured... they're free...they the captured...free...ad nauseum. If you're not predisposed to disliking it and are willing to just take it for what it is, I think you'll find yourself agreeing with what I've written here...

Crazy Rich Asians
(2018)

i'm glad reviews are so mixed...so let me set y'all straight...
All those using the words 'typical' and 'cliched'? correct. those using the words 'romantic' or 'comedy'? likewise... those missing that the movie had a voice of its own..and that it hit every mark in an aMAzingly well balanced, reSPECTful way? i feel sorry for you. could be that you're just young/inexperienced. and, most likely, frustrated and bitter wannabees.... this movie TOtally understood what love is about. please don't even USE the word if you don't understand that it requires the willingness to sacrifice. over and over again, when necessary. and this doesn't mean COMprimise. no. not when one gives AND gets because of the giving. a movie like this is complicated enough to always step on SOMEone's toes... it does so, rightfully, unapologetically... and yes. as walt whitman said, 'there is nothing new under the sun'. so is civilization and life built. step by step. layer by layer. but there are only so many 'stories' for us to tell, as human animals. one like this, that can weave SO many of the others...and give us extremely high, no expense spared production values should be seen for the monumental blockbuster, crossover that it deserves to be. i think, in not all that long, people will point to THIS movie and say, 'THAT's when asians broke into the world market(in other than kung fu, manga or gangsta vs cops movies). even realists, if not embittered, realize there's a chemistry in life between certain beings. call it what we will...this movie covers it with a lot of laughs and all the right touches in all the right places...it's a big movie. try and see it on a big screen. you're welcome, in advance.

Manglehorn
(2014)

5.6?????? five point SIX???????? what movie did YOU people see?
So i gave it a ten. not that that'll make up for the ones that didn't like it. this movie, imo, is flawless...and surprising. it has moments of writing brilliance, PERfectly portrayed. it's VERY easy to see why pacino picked this role. even holly hunter was different than anything(not much) i've seen her in in the last 10 years...a nice change. that's all i'm going to say about this except that i got up outta bed after the movie was over, turned on this heap and waited for it to fire up JUST so that i could write this...i doubt, these years later, anyone will read it. but it deserved to be said...this movie is an indie movie lover's dream...

The Book of Henry
(2017)

NOT brilliant...
Good, though. but, i found it a bit TOO shiny/perfect...at least the first half... everybody executed their parts(including the crew) very well...but lines were a little TOO well delivered and 'snappy'...so, while it was clever, it was still seeming a bit too mechanical/paint by number... but it WILL make you smile a bunch for that first half...

Wind River
(2017)

i am soooooo happy you all 'saw' this movie...
i come here sometimes to look at how others perceived a film. rarely do i feel i've seen a story(no matter the genre) 'perfectly told'. nothing that 'doesn't fit' added. this was one of those. and that you all felt it, too, is reflected in a much deserved high rating...good for you all. this was NOT a 'typical Hollywood film'. but, instead, to ME, one of the films that makes Hollywood great. just that they still will invest moneys to MAKE a story such as this. good on you all...and thank you. i wait for films like this.

Penny Dreadful
(2014)

do you take me/us for fools?
i know the show's been over for a while...and i know it's VERY likely that no one, much less anyone from the show, will ever read this... but what utter bullshit to try and convince me that, 'well...we thought this would be a good ending for the show'. do you think we can't FEEL when something went wrong? something in production slipped out of place...one of the actors didn't want to go on...there was trouble on the set...what EVER...OK. you need to do a crash landing? whatever... just don't lie to us...thanks. it WAS one of the best shows i've ever, in my 66 years, seen. until, suddenly, it was over? i don't mind sad endings. that's not what i'm complaining about. in fact...i've said all i need to. i don't need to defend my position any more than you all, obviously, felt the need to tell the truth...

Atomic Blonde
(2017)

went for a picture, got a frame...
all the trappings/look of a good movie...but what an empty piece of crap this turned out to be. everything is well executed...the acting, the photography...the choreography/GREAT fight scenes...but where's the beef? since others before me have taken it on to give you most of the details of the movie, i'm just here to warn others that may have been taken in by the trailers. it LOOKED good. and that held true...but the story is, at BEST, predictable. and even though it was supposed to be 'tongue in cheek', it still was more ridiculous most times than funny...i was looking forward to it. in the seat i kept expecting it to get better...but it just goes from fight scene to fight scene with a bit of 'aren't we cool' dialogue from weak, clichéd characterizations...big disappointment.

National Theatre Live: Angels in America Part Two - Perestroika
(2017)

i know this might sound strange...but really(emphasis on the real)??? only an 8.5
what was detracting about it that makes it less than a 10. and if you think i'm an easy marker, you don't(emphasis on the 'don't' ;-) know me... like i said last week, in my review of part 1...i don't like spoilers. reading or writing, of course... and i feel the other person who wrote a review did a very good job in providing an outline to give people wondering about this work an excellent idea of what to expect...i do feel he left out a few of the women actresses that did stunning work...but that's just it...everyone involved with this performance did it as if they're life, if not their livelihoods depended on it...and, of course, then there's the comparisons...was it as good as 'this production' or 'that production'. i've been to professional(and some damn good amateur) plays around the world. many in ny, including part 1 of this play. i say this production is as good as any other i've seen and i was privileged to witness it...it IS dark in places. very dark, in fact. but it's those places that need exploring if we're ever going to experience resolution...progress. if you have trouble with the material, it might be a good time to give that a look and try and understand why...in any case, if there were flaws, i didn't notice them. this is one of the few works i know i can EASily say deserves all points...writing/acting/staging/'choreography'/lighting/even the sets, as simple as they were were VERY effective as settings for that part of the story...and some of it was ingenious in its practicality AND...not being at all distracting from the story, itself... if anything that's been said sounds interesting, try and catch SOME form of this work...there are few that have been or will ever be as well done and powerfully moving...
