Ari Aster seriously took some major risks with this one. Don't go in expecting Hereditary or Midsommar or even a horror movie. The only thing this movie has in common with those earlier films is that the director clearly has some major issues with his mother. This is an incoherent, sometimes interesting, sometimes ridiculous, three hour series of metaphors. You have to give Joaquin and the other actors credit for engaging and going with it, but I can't help feel that a lot of it didn't work and that the movie would have bene much better trimmed down to two hours. I like that the director took risks and played with genre and what film can do but you still need a story. There are many sections of the film that I feel were useless and even tedious to endure. The director was clearly given a lot of rope and you know how the saying goes. I am glad I watched it but I can't say it was a good film and I wouldn't watch it again. It was definitely interesting and a unique experience in film.
