Django
(2022)

Djan-NO
I'm from Belgium, so I know Matthias Schoonaerts is a very good actor. However, in this series his acting limits itself to raising his head very slowly while desperately trying to look like a bad ass and making short grunts and growls which I hope weren't in the script.

I'm focussing at Schoonaerts because he played Django, but the other characters in this series perform on the same level. They can do better. I know they can. I recognise most of them from other programs where they did a fine job!

It's not just the acting though. The whole cinematography is a bit off. The footage is either too dark or even a bit too shakey. At first I didn't know what it was I didn't like about it. It's that subtle.

And last but not least: the story. It's just not strong enough to play in the same league as the Django westerns the producers are aiming for.

Pity.

65
(2023)

A missed opportunity..
This movie could have been big! Going back to the cretaceous era? Yes please! Adam Driver in a leading role? Oh baby yes! And then there was this trailer! It's been ages since I got this excited over a movie.

What could go wrong?

Well... the story. Adam Driver is a great actor, but even he couldn't save this movie. It was boring af. Pity. I gave this movie a 6/10 because of the special effects, the music and Adam Driver, but the people who wrote the script should be banned from Hollywood. Or Columbia Pictures could make a new dinosaur movie where the writers of 65 get fed to a pack of hungry T-rex's. I'd rate that movie higher for sure..

I don't do spoilers, so I can't tell you what exactly made this story so boring to look at, but trust me when I say my 8 year old niece could have written a better story.

Alaskan Killer Bigfoot
(2021)

Perfect for television. Too perfect if you know what I mean
It's a fun show to watch but don't get fooled.. this isn't reality TV as you might think. There's a script. There are little clues that give it away.

For instance (no spoiler here). The men are sitting around the fire at the end of episode 3 and all of a sudden they hear a roar. The men then jump up at the same time and the camera goes over their head and into the distance.

Great great shot and great television.

Now that's the thing. It was all set up to be perfect. You can see them waiting to jump up and the camera/drone is stand by to zoom in. It is way too perfect and you've got multiple examples like this. 99% of all viewers are smart enough to see right through this.

So, yeah. It makes great television but shows the viewer at the same time that there's little left to chance. They also added a lot of sounds and roars to add to the tention.. it even got annoying after a while

Still, I enjoyed the show. I really did. Just don't watch this if you're a non-believer because you will get annoyed. I promise you :-)

Moonfall
(2022)

Moonfail
Whoever wrote this story should be banned from Hollywood along with his family, friends and pets. This is typical blockbuster garbage. Not even entertaining.

See, the problem with these kind of scifi movies is that their audience loves scifi and therefor knows a lot about space. These same kind of people tend to watch documentaries and read books about space.

Then it's a problem if the movie lacks any real science. This is how a 10 year old would write a story about space and aliens. It's cringing to see how every stereotype is thrown into the script and how science is ignored for the entire movie.

Why do studios throw so much money to get kick ass special effects, only to fail at picking the writers? It can be done (interstellar for instance), so why oh why did they go with these screenwriters??

The only amazing thing about this movie is Halle Berry looking like the way she does at 55 years old.

Expedition Bigfoot
(2019)

Fun show, zero science
I gave this show a 10/10 because it's fun to watch, BUT if you are looking for a science based research program you came to the wrong address. Better go and watch a documentary about big cats on the Discovery channel if that's what you're looking for.

Host Bryce Johnson is a stereotical American. Everything is huge and amazing and the smallest rock or foot print is a game changer and the biggest piece of evidence the guy has ever seen. It's hilarious to watch.

Expert Ronny Le Blanc is a true believer and can't see anything but evidence of the existence of bigfoot. His ideas and theories are so far fetched even the History Channel wouldn't cast him in an episode of Ancient Aliens. The guy's a looney.

Mireya Mayor is the primate expert and does a decent job of giving us information about big apes. She is a likeable and believable character. I think she trully wants to find something but is the most skeptical of the bunch. Every bigfoot show has to have a persona like this. You know how it goes. It gives credibility to the show.

Russell is ex-military and is the survival expert. He is by far my most favorite person on the show and a fan favorite. He's the only one who seems to interact with his cameraman, which makes him look even more likeable than he already is. He's just there because he enjoys sleeping in the woods and walking around in the middle of nowhere in the dark of night. The fact that he is all tough and ex-military but wasn't afraid to show viewers he was scared at a certain point made him very human. I like this guy... a lot.

So yeah, the program is about these 4 characters heading out into the woods to look for a creature that doesn't really exist. They find some "evidence" sometimes but it isn't clear if it's just a bear, deer, cougar or planted evidence. Don't really care. It's a fun show to watch just before you go to bed. It's like watching a movie. That's fiction too. 10/10, well deserved! Looking forward to the new season guys.

Catch the Bullet
(2021)

Wanna know how bad this one is?
Man gets shot and killed and the actor can't even act being dead. You can see him moving his arm in the corner of the frame.

Enough said, go watch this movie if you're high on mushrooms or if you have company you wanna get rid of. I bet they will leave you be after 10 minutes of watching this movie with you.

There is NO other reason for you to watch this movie. Trust me on this one.

Godfather of Harlem
(2019)

Forest Whitaker reading from the phone book for 24 hours straight would still get a 10/10 on imdb if it were up to me.
And the good news is.. this show offers way more than just Whitaker.

Giancarlo Esposito for instance (you know... Gus Fring from Breaking Bad) and other characters like Gigante the mobster and a brilliant version of Malcolm X played by Nigél Thatch. This show has some serious quality acting.

Suspense, good story writing, great music, superb cinematography and kick ass acting. If this series were a woman I'd put a ring around her finger so she won't get away from me.

Only thing I didn't like was the contemporary hiphop music while the series is supposed to be somewhere in the 1960s. That felt... off. But that's just me and is just a detail.

The Book of Boba Fett
(2021)

I just love the Star Wars Universe
I do not understand the negative reviews. I love this show!

The acting is great, the cinematography is amazing, the music is a perfect match...

Granted, if you're a Star Wars noob this isn't the show for you, but if you like this universe you're in for a ride.

I was very sceptic when Disney bought the Star Wars Franchise. Hell, I thought they were going to ruin it for sure. But the opposite is true. Disney respects the old ways. They even try to use the original actors when and where possible.

Don't listen to the haters, try it out for yourself. It's possible you don't like it either, but at least you gave it a try. Me personally Imma watch every single Star Wars series Disney is throwing at me. I fricking love this universe.

To all the haters who are going to downvote my review: yo momma looks like Jabba.

Invasion
(2021)

big budget invasion series about aliens with Sam Neill WITHOUT a big budget, invasion, aliens or Sam Neill
This review is written after having watched 3 episodes. I stopped watching, but if I hear or read that the show picked up the pace and improved both the story AND the characters I will reconsider and watch it further and even change this review and its rating.

So far...

* Uninteresting characters (although most of them are good actors). I like the black soldier and Indian woman though, but the whole lord of the flies thing these kids have going on is boring AF, etc

* This show isn't about aliens, but about people. Then it is a problem when you don't care about most characters

* A big budget invasion series about aliens with Sam Neill WITHOUT a big budget, invasion, aliens or Sam Neill. This is quite an accomplishment by Apple

* A very, very slow pace. Now, this can be done (breaking bad for example), but this show is an example of how not to do things. Usually screenwriters start dragging things out somewhere in the middle and they at least start with a bang or climax, but this show started out with dragging things out.

* A very, very sad attempt at creating suspense and mystery. I don't feel the need to watch another episode. The more I watched, the more it annoyed me. Making the aliens and their invasion as illusive, blurry and fuzzy as possible does NOTHING to create suspense and mystery, eventhough that's exactly what the writers were aiming for.

I'll check again in a few weeks. If the reviews here are still bad I'm not even going to bother watching how it ended. I regret that apple subscribtion and won't be renewing. I had big hopes for this series, but it's just one big missed high five between writers and the audience.

Invincible
(2021)

Started watching episode 1 at midnight...
....6 hours later..... dammit, gotta go to work in an hour. Damn you Invincible! Damn you for being this good and addictive to watch !!

It's been years since I've seen a super hero cartoon this good. I just had to go on IMDB and rate this a 10/10.

Season two? Yes please.

Last Night in Soho
(2021)

A movie Audrey Hepburn would love to have been in
I'm not gonna write any spoilers here, but this movie is a must see for anyone who loves 60's Giallo-styled movies and here is why...

The three pillars that carry this movie are: great acting, killer music and an amazing cinematography

My only point of critique would be the storyline. There are a few minor plotholes and at some point the movie was starting to lose me as a viewer. It became a bit too much of a psychological thriller. Luckily, things got turned around just in time to leave me satisfied in the end. It isn't easy to explain this without giving away spoilers, so I guess you'd have to watch it for yourself.

This movie turned out to be a cinematographic marble and I wasn't expecting this at all. It's made by the same guy who directed Baby Driver and it shows. Both these movies have great acting and a killer soundtrack in common.

Extra bonus points for Anya Taylor-Joy (that girl from the Queen's Gambit). She was amazing as a 60's persona. I really got Audrey Hepburn-vibes from her and that's not a compliment to give lightly.

Old
(2021)

Goodnight Shyamalan
Some things get better with age - like wine for instance - other things really don't. Director/producer Night Shyamalan is one of the latter. I honestly thought The Happening and The Last Airbender were his rock bottom but apparentely you can always dig deeper.

Now, the idea behind the movie is somewhat orginal, but it's very poorly executed. I could predict most of what was going to happen and I'm no Einstein or Nostradamus. It was just so damn predictable.

The acting wasn't all that either and there were a lot of plotholes (non spoiler: Mid Side Sedan's not aging at the rest of them, the entire ending of the movie, etc). Extra bonus point for getting on my nerves goes to Vicky Krieps' accent, but I feel it is lame of me to complain about that. I have a terrible accent myself. It annoyed the crap out me though.

But hey, I wanna finish on a positive note: I feel they did the aging of the actors really well. Both the different actors who played the aging children as the makeup done on the parents were nicely done.

Tenet
(2020)

Let's all ignore the laws of physics and gravity
I get what they were trying to do with this movie. I also liked the fact that I had to think to follow the timelines. That was cool. Really, I'm all for some fresh experimental stuff, but I had some issues with this movie. Yeah yeah, downvote this if you like but here are my reasons why I didn't like this movie:

* The science and physics don't add up. I understand scifi can stretch things as far as they like and movies about magic or even Superman don't make any sense either, but reverse time by seeing bullet holes before they happened.. come on man. They're trying to be smart but it's just dumb. Past, present and future.. at the same time.. during action, when one influences the other... yeah maybe inside of a black hole but unless I missed the setting completely there was no black hole to be seen.

* The music was aweful and distracted me from the movie.

* Did you ever watch a movie and you could just see an actor acting.. like you weren't feeling it? You just saw a man trying too hard to be a character? Yeah, I had this with that billionair.

In the end it's a matter of personal taste I guess. It's ok for people to like this movie, as it is ok for me to think it was a stupid story with bad acting and very bad music. Seriously, 7/10? For this? Nah.

Prospect
(2018)

Science Fiction that felt like science non-fiction!
A distant moon orbiting a gas giant. The trees have green leafs, so yeah there's oxygen but there's also poison in the air so humans need a filter to breath through. Man, this setting was brilliant!

The science fiction was raw and felt like science real. This is how an alien moon with 1G gravity could be like. I enjoyed every minute of this movie. The story, the actors, the cinematography, the weird futuristic pop music (which turned out to be Latvian music)...

Basicly all the details that went into creating this strange world coupled with kick ass acting by Sophie Tatcher and Pedro Pascal and a story that wasn't at all predictable and clear cut.

We need more movies like these.. we really do.

The Head Hunter
(2018)

Great cinematography does not make a great movie
I know some will downvote this review but hear me out please.

Yes, this is a low budget movie and considering that budget they did an amazing job. The atmosphere, the music, the actor.. this is worth 10/10. No doubt about that! So I'm not saying this is a bad movie.

But no, this isn't a great movie either. Cinematography can only take you so far. At some point there has to be an actual movie and I missed that. The story ain't all that bad. I'd rate that a 6/10, but I never felt any excitement, thrill or suspense. During the movie I started swiping on Tinder, messaging a friend, I even checked Facebook on my phone... this isn't a good sign now is it?

In the end I'd give this movie a 5/10. Please check it for yourself because it is certainly worth watching and I understand why some cinemaphiles adore these kind of films, I really do, but to me the story and suspense is equally important as the quality of acting and the entire atmosphere a movie creates. I feel something was missing to really make this a memorable movie.

I can understand both the people who gave this movie high ratings, as the ones who gave it very low ratings. I think 5 or 6/10 is reasonable.

Jungle Cruise
(2021)

Disney at its finest - WAYYY better than The Pirates of the Caribbean-movies
I am not a fan of Disney movies... they managed to screw up Star Wars and the Pirates of the Caribbean-movies are nothing but cheap popcorn films with way too much action and a story not even a 7 yo would write.

So, for me to enjoy this movie is really saying something here. This is Indiana Jones meets Jewel of the Nile but with the Disney machine behind it, so you're in for some stunning special effects.

I think I was smiling throughout the entire movie and let's face it.. based upon how I started this review you can already tell I'm not that kind of person. It's a miracle I even have friends ;)

Nah, seriously: this movie is worth watching!

Edit: was going to give this movie a 9, but Disney openly going for a gay main character? About time! Plus one! I must say: all the actors did a fine job, Blunt, Rock and certainly Jesse Plemons. Eversince he starred in Fargo I found this to be an excellent actor! His German's terrible though :D.

The Vast of Night
(2019)

The Outer Limits - The Movie starring Marty McFly
This movie is winking at programs like The Twilight Zone and The Outer Limits. It's basicly one long episode of one of these shows.

The 50's atmosphere is also very well created. I was looking for Marty McFly on the background somewhere. I liked the movie, but the plot is a bit thin. That's okay though, they did a fine job with this movie nevertheless.

Maze Runner: The Death Cure
(2018)

If I had an army of bad guys, I'd make sure they train every day
The first Maze Runner movie was brilliant. The second one was a bit boring and this one offers a fitting finale, like the kind of season finale some series get.

This doesn' mean this is a good movie. The main character is an idiot who thinks he can save the world and take on an entire army by himself. It's like he knows the bad guys always miss or wait too long when they fire their guns. Strange. This seems to happen in a lot of hollywood action movies. Luckily our heroes always hit the bonzai when they fire themselves. In a way that's also normal because they are teens who grew up without guns and the bad guys are a heavily armed and highly trained military. It's normal that the latter suck at shooting a gun.

The story line itself is basicly action, problem, deus ex machina, action, problem, deus ex machina, etc. It's easy to write a story like this because it doesn't have to be clever or good.

But hey, it's a teen movie and I should look at it this way. It's better than other, similar movies so yeah, there's that. It's well directed, pretty good acting and the action music's spot on. I only finished this movie because the first one was really good and I wanted to see how it ended.

Breach
(2020)

Nicolas Cage was busy doing another B-movie
So they asked Bruce Willis. That's the only explanation I can come up with because why would mr Die Hard burn himself on this movie? Did he actually read the script? Probably not.

Maybe he thought they'd let him drill into an asteroid again? I wish they would have given him a rock to drill into.. that would have been a far better story. Just Bruce Willis, drilling into a space rock for 2 hours straight. Without any breaks or him going to the bathroom. At least 4 stars! That's one more than I gave this piece of space junk.

Seriously, go and watch this movie if you're constipated or something. It'll do miracles for your bowel movement. I promise. If not, then stay away from this one. It's really bad. I'm not kidding.

Infinite
(2021)

Reading the reviews to see how it ended..
Because I stopped watching after 1 hour 20 minutes.

Lots of action, mediocre acting - at least this time Wahlberg wasn't talking to plants like in The Happening, that movie was even worse - and an absolute mess of a story line.

I still don't know how it ended but that's okay. I guess they beat the bad guy after a big over the top fight at the end of the movie. This isn't a spoiler. I really don't know but let's be real here.. any other ending would be a massive shocker.

Life
(2017)

Yeah but no but yeah
Well acted, well directed and the story had potential. The ending however was not only very predictable but also poorly done. Otherwise it would have been a 6/10 for me.

It's an ok sci-fi horror movie folks. Happy I've seen it, but there's a chance that in about 5 years or so I'll stumble upon this movie and I will wonder.. did I watch this already or not? I tend to have that with movies that aren't very memorable...

Captive State
(2019)

Wow!
As someone who watches tons of sci-fi and alien movies: this one is really good!

Well acted, well directed, well written and they never feel the need to explain what's going on to the viewer - you know.. like most dumb dumb blockbusters tend to do, thinking their audience is made of idiots. The aliens are also very original, as is their technology. Extra bonus point there.

I picked up pretty fast how this movie was going to end and I suspect most viewers will. However, it didn't bother me one bit. That's how good the movie was!

The Tomorrow War
(2021)

Independence Day Rides Again
Let's get something out of the way first: this movie's not gonna win the oscar for best scenario/story, but who cares? This was very entertaining to watch. The story is actually very orginal until they hollywood'ed/blockbusted the hell out of it. You know how that goes.

This movie made me think of the first Independence Day movie from 1997. It's very similar, so if you enjoyed that movie, go and watch this one will ya? You'll be happy you did. If you didn't like Independence Day, well, go and watch Interstellar of Brokeback Mountain. Those are excellent films. This movie however, is pure entertainment and gives you a reason to eat popcorn. Nothing less, but certainly nothing more.

The Haunting of Bly Manor
(2020)

Stopped watching after 6 episodes
No spoilers but this isn"t a horror series. It's very well acted, but the story just isn't for me. Hated the alter ego's of certain characters talking to themselves. It's too slow, not exciting at all. It's not the actors, it's the storyline. I just don't like it.

I gave it a try and after each episode I told myself that the next one will get things moving, but it just did't happen.

The Loneliest Whale: The Search for 52
(2021)

Too little, too long
No spoilers: But the crew set out in search for this whale on a 7-day expedition. 7 days. To find a whale. In an entire ocean. This was the first time bells went off, but I kept watching anyway. Not sure why they thought the entire trip was worth a movie though.

The documentary is too slow. They try to hide the fact that almost nothing happened for most of those 7 days. I'm not spoiling here, they did find something, but they could have just wrapped this docu up in 30 minutes or even better... in an article in the newspaper.
