The Paradine Case
(1947)

The Most Riveting Courtroom Drama of All Time
Alida Valli is a stunningly beautiful widow who mesmerizes in every scene. But the script is what constantly amazes. There was not one word that was anything but boldly original. Never, ever has there been a courtroom drama so absorbing.

Nothing typical happens in this film. The writing, directing and acting kept me glued to the screen from beginning to end.

Despite 80% of the film being in the courtroom, this drama was electrifying. Pardon my redundancy but I was knocked out by the story. I have never seen anything like it and I don't think there was a single line similar to any other script ever written of the many films I have viewed over the decades. Surprises abound.

My only regret is that anyone reading this review will be expecting too much and will be let down, so please ignore this review.

The Unholy
(2021)

The New Hollywood Writer Director Producer: Un-funny, Un-Intelligent, Un-religious
With horror films this un-good, there is often some redeeming humor. When there are good jokes thrown in, horror films are so much better, but this is witless. The worst premise is miracles are not real. Oh, except if demons do them. So, in the end you get to see everyone lose their legs, hearing, speech etc., because it was really the devil behind it. So you're not allowed to believe there is such thing as the paranormal unless it is purely demon stuff. Wow.

But underneath it all is Hollywood's anti religion fervor. Religion is no good so faith in miracles is a bad thing because you're really summoning demons. Totally joyless film in the end and pretty grim.

However, this made money. So people will see most films without race propaganda or PC nonsense, I guess.

Cruise

Just a couple of cute wholesome kids falling in love, stealing cars, snorting coke...
...spewing F bombs in every sentence and being imbeciles. The premise is worn out with the boy from the wrong side of the tracks, old school Italian working class family and the Ivy League Jewish girl going places in life. Of course she gets mixed up in his dirty business and it all goes south but if you ask me they were both trash to begin with. It is hard to watch and listen to a film without even one interesting or original line.

This is just another attempt by Hollywood to convince everyone the culture is nothing but lowlifes who spew refuse, do hard drugs and commit felonies. I did not even know people like this growing up.

Joe
(2013)

Southern Comfort And A Liberal Wet Dream
The original film "Joe" in 1970 was a brilliant masterpiece, unlike any film ever made up until that point. It was about real people making unusual choices that many average Joes often agree with. This remake of Joe, 43 years later shows what movie makers have become: miseducated misanthropes who label us all by geography, skin color, job status and many other identifiers. Seeing characters that fulfill preconceived notions is a liberal wet dream.

From start to finish this movie depicts southern people as stupid, cruel, angry, selfish, vulgar, and remorseless. The reviews that praise this film refer to it as a slice of southern Americana. It wasn't in any of the neighborhoods I lived in or visited. The poorest of the poor there may be unsightly and uneducated, but cruel to animals they are not, and polite to a fault, they are.

Animal cruelty is found much more within inner city populations. Teaching children bad habits is much more a part of the drug culture. Drug gangs need young recruits. Addicts think having a child will change them or motivate them to get off drugs. When it doesn't work they blame the child. Later they resent it if the child is not weak like they are, or if they refuse to fall into the same pit.

Nicholas Cage is known for having outrageous spending habits. Needing money is the only reason he could agree to perform such inhumanity.

Modern filmmakers find comfort in southern stereo-types which they have been thoroughly miseducated about and feel they understand well. Anyone who has lived in the south will not recognize these characters.

There is a silver lining to this review. You may think that seeing so many reviews praising this film means you out of touch with the world for despising it. However, this film only grossed $2 million meaning it lost money and almost no one saw it. All those reviews you read praising it are in a minority.

See "Hell or High Water" instead or after this one.

East Side Sushi
(2014)

Wonderful Multi-Layered Family Fare
This deserved wide release, but did not qualify as PC, divisive Hollywood exploitation. Take in the messages about culture, family, tradition and hard work. There is nothing wrong with any of them. Asians have a beautiful and unique culture on full display here. Americans admire Asians and appreciate their culture. The kids are raised to be hard-working, happy, productive adults.

Mexicans have a beautiful and unique culture on full display here as well. People like Mexicans and enjoy their many contributions. Then you have America, which made it all. Possible. So many come here, use their values, work hard and become extremely successful. Most waited a long time to get permission to come to the USA and were extremely grateful. You have all three themes on full display here in this film, even though nothing about America is expressed. Unfortunately, that went out of style in the 1960's.

This film has no agenda but to entertain. It features excellent actors, and I often wondered if they were really actors because they were all so natural in their roles. It is a heart-warming story as well with a positive and uplifting ending. I have seen it four times and seem to enjoy it more each time.

It reminded me of Jon Favreau's "Chef" but like most real American families there was no bad language, pot smoking, or big name actors. I have seen it now four times, and enjoy it more every time. I really hate it when films like this do not get critical acclaim or widespread attention.

That tells you all you need to know about most critics, media, and culture now.

The Black Dahlia
(2006)

Why Did They Remake Another Classic Like The Black Dahlia?
You may have noticed that Hollywood has rushed to erase all of your favorite, classic films of the 30s through the 80's with new models. That is so no one will ever go watch the originals. If they do go watch them to compare, they will be tainted and biased by the new version, and unable to enjoy the experience. Besides remaking this Black Dahlia with ridiculous lines and story changes, they filled it with as much vile language and repulsive images as possible. They also made sure to highlight how evil one race is versus another. They forever aim to please the diversity crowd. But since their favorite haters remain a minority of the country, these films lose a lot of money,

But they do not care about that, since America has made them filthy rich. They really and truly do not need the money. They are comforted knowing another classic that we loved will soon become obsolete and forgotten. They know that most people do not read reviews of their disasters, and eventually will watch them. They will absorb the films like this in perpetuity. Yes, forever. Hollywood and The Left has been on a mission to create the most disgusting characterizations of America, its heroes, and a certain race as possible, for decades. At the same time, they have lionized other races and sexes to make sure audiences despise one group and root for the other in film, and in life. Since any group, nation, or people divided against itself, cannot stand, this will not end well. And that is their plan folks.

Kiss Kiss Bang Bang
(2005)

What I learned from this film
This film "laughably" bombed at the box office even with all the mega stars. But Hollywood and the critics do not know why. There is a new, miseducated, narcissistic, low-brow class of sheep that literally know nothing about history, or anything else. But they believe they are the best and brightest and they write these films, pay for these films, and write positive reviews..

They think they are special but they are the ones we roll our eyes at. This is not "film noir." It is not "dark comedy." It is not clever, witty, or insightful. It is repulsive. The few who fell over themselves laughing and winking in the mirror are the ones who think the f word is hilarious. All you have to do is put it in every sentence and suddenly, miraculously you have wit. Not just wit but brilliant wit. A timeless classic has just been created. They are truly so dull and shallow, they are far too stupid to know how really stupid they are. They will never know. But now I know the reason wit and great comedy has died.

If you want to raise the level of hilarity you add a lot of s**t, pee and tit phrases to the script. Now you are talking about really big laughs. I could not even crack a smile during any of this film. It is a Robert Downey clown show.

If you want to have a good evening and watch black comedy, with wit, and lots of pathos watch "A New Leaf," with Walter Mathau from 1971. Planning ways to kill your rich wife is real black comedy and not only funny, but rewarding.

Coneheads
(1993)

When America Was Land of the Free and Funny
The cable system we have is mostly unwatchable, with programming carefully chosen to provoke the most suicide. However, this one slipped past them one day, perhaps tricked by the paltry score: 5.3. Hopefully my 10 will not change that. Most people do not get the brilliant humor because they don't remember a non-PC world. To them this film is a Fellini; misunderstood. The best running gag is the least recognized. A family moves into the neighborhood and no one notices they have giant Cone heads. They stare curiously but the Coneheads divert further scrutiny by offering a simple explanation: we are from France.

So, instead of a film about how no one can accept anyone else's differences, acting out with attacks and prejudice, in this movie, no one even notices. This allows pure hilarity to ensue as the parental units have all of the same exact suburban troubles as every other family with a teenage cone. Alien identity unnoticed, the dad Beldar is free to use his super powers at will. One of them being pure, unadulterated honesty. His directed commentary is comic gold with the best insults ever written for a film. Example: George Costanza from Seinfeld, Jason Alexander, asks Beldar: "you probably can't tell that I am wearing a hairpiece." Without skipping a beat Dan Akroyd (perfect as Beldar) responds: "not from very high altitudes." So if you enjoy wit, perfect timing and good writing, this film is just right.

There are also many charming and touching moments with the Great Chris Farley, who is in love with his first young cone, but frustrated by Dad.

The story is clever and lots of fun. The funny lines never stop. David Spade as the kiss-up immigration agent shines, but the whole cast is terrific.

Rip Tide
(2017)

Excellent film with good values and positive story was sabotaged
After seeing this three times simply because it was on, I decided to try and figure out why the ratings and reviews had such low scores. The scenery is fantastic and many actors in it are positively stunning, The reviews were not just terrible they were mean-spirited, with totally nonsensical objections.

What I discovered, not surprisingly, was that the really bad reviews were written by one-time reviewers, meaning leftist shills created fake identities just to spew hatred and sabotage this film. Why, you might ask? Because it was old fashioned, lacking F bombs, sex, angry minorities, and PC propaganda. The lead actress Debby Ryan was a well known Christian in her earlier years and was involved in Christian programs. Hollywood despises Christians. Leftists want to destroy traditionalism, so they send in brigades of haters day one to write bad reviews and kill off these films before anyone can see them.

Unfortunately, Debby Ryan has since surrendered and joined their causes in order to continue her career.

The acting is excellent all around, and the characters well written. There is redemption, forgiveness and life changes. Debby Ryan is especially good and carries the film with aplomb. If you watch it without reading the bad reviews, you will not only enjoy it, you will give your kids some really wholesome entertainment.

On Pointe
(2018)

You all missed the point of this film
Those of you rating this on script, acting, story or some other meaningless attribute have missed the whole point. This film is just one of the countless Hollywood has put out that shows beautiful, nubile young white girls being comforted, mentored and snuggled by someone from the south instead of a Russian or Eastern European ballet coach. Because everyone knows guys from Alabama make the best ballet coaches and the best people for that matter. Of course all the non-minority males are annoying and pathetic just to complete the picture.

So you are wondering why all those girls don't want you anymore? They have been well schooled by Hollywood producers and directors who want every film to paint you as weak, sniveling fools and the so-called "oppressed" as the best doctors, lawyers, leaders, family men and ballet coaches.

The Highwaymen
(2019)

Anti-Law Enforcement Pro-Criminal Garbage From Beginning to End
Both Karl Marx and Engels claimed criminals should be allowed to kick us in the head and commit their crimes without punishment because they were simply the victims of an oppressive society. But like all good socialists and communists, they only meant that to apply to your houses. Marx himself kicked his guest out of his own house for being a lazy, no-good scoundrel.

This film is pure garbage with non-stop speeches from Woody Harrelson about too much bloodshed from the police. We're no better than the criminals because we try to kill them, Woody says. His lines are all worn out tropes.

There is also a tearful speech by dear old daddy Barrow about how terrible it is they are trying to find and kill his son who got started stealing a chicken because they were all hungry and it was the Depression. So, of course, criminals should not be punished or pursued. They are just oppressed, poor, hungry victims no matter how many times they rob, kill or maim.

None of what is verbalized in this film is true. None of it was actually said There were never any regretful, pitiful, weak cowardly cops unsure of right and wrong. It was wrong to murder innocent people. It was right to kill those murderers.

The main law enforcement officer Purvis was said to have committed suicide but that is not what the coroner thought. Later it was determined that he was trying to remove a tracer bullet and accidentally lost his life when the gun fired. The movie wants you to think he could not stand the thought of enforcing the law by lethal means and killed himself. Total BS.

Hey Woody and writer John Fusco, better hope the rapists cannot get into your gated communities, over your high walls, and past the armed security guarding your compounds. If they do I hope you can talk them into nice, peaceful crimes.

No Karl, Woody and Hollywood, good people protect their homes and their families and their countries from killers using any means necessary. Bad men let the rapists and thieves out of prison to commit their crimes on innocent victims over and over again.

A Violent Separation
(2019)

Superb Acting, Directing, Cinematography, Film Score with Unique Characters
The hot girl is angry and waving a knife around threatening her boyfriend as they drive in a rural area. The car hits a bump and the knife hits an artery. A story about family ties, guilt, murder, and solutions. The opening grabbed me by the short hairs and did not let go. Many surprises, including the ending which was definitely not a Hollywood solution. That explains the low box office. There are some great actors in this film such as the detective who was the moth-obsessed transvestite killer in "Silence of the Lambs." He is one of the many, truly fascinating characters who think and act differently, and shine in their roles. The lead actresses may be very hot, young starlets but they are extremely good here with unique arcs in attitude/thinking/beliefs.

I kept thinking about the film score which was unobtrusive yet powerful. It added quite a bit to the on-going tension. This should have made money because it reeks with skill. The Mise en scène, scripting and pacing usually comes with much more experienced writers and directors. It reminded me a little of "Fargo" and "Hell or High Water," with an ending that was less settled and more unsettling.

Whatever your opinion of questionable decisions related to murder/death/justice and the law, it will be mirrored by someone in this film. That may make you dislike certain other characters, but I found it to be more like real life and far more entertaining than similar films.

Shaft

Hopefully the end of SJ luck
Samuel Jackson again shows zero range playing the same character in every film throughout his career. He has two emotions:: condescending, or angry. Of course sometimes he is just snarky angry. Other times his range extends to very, very angry at the man. Fear not, regardless of his ability he will always be portrayed as a god and of superior intelligence to the others in the film.

Every word he speaks is so obviously written by some very subservient yet able writer. It doesn't not seem to matter that his films like this totally flop, Hollywood always tries to find a way to keep him front and center.

But now that Hollywood writers only know how to write MF in every sentence, he sounds more like his true self, lacking in depth, intelligence, and wit. He is getting the true dregs of the Hollywood writer puddles and this does not bode well for him This film is so unwatchable and cringe-worthy it becomes obvious early on he does not care what you think anymore.

Away and Back
(2015)

Nothing Wrong with this Film and a Whole Lot is Right
This is not the kind of movie I would normally take time for because I find made for TV movies to be heavy on message, slanted and cliche ridden. The acting is usually hit and miss. But being a Jason Lee fan and slowly becoming a Minka Kelly fan I wanted to give it a try. This one was none of those things I feared, even though a film about a motherly woman temporarily joining a motherless family would usually be filled with lines like "you can't bond with kids for awhile and then leave them." Minka Kelly does just that but without the same cliche-ridden drama. A big reason to watch this is a love of nature and many people understand human devotion to birds that fill the world with song and color and endless fascinating behaviors. The fact that they came from dinosaurs is incredible to think about. The director uses real film so the colors and photography are endlessly gorgeous. The locales really lend themselves to film. Even though the inevitable romance was a no-brainer, it was realistic and engaging. Both characters are strong and independent, but they blend out of necessity and natural moments of commonality. The tension-filled drama toward the end was believable and easy to handle. The ending was great and I felt like the score added a lot to all of the scenes.

Loving Pablo
(2017)

Say Hello To My Little Friend
If you want a great story and performance about a drug dealer, see the one starring Al Pacino as the Cuban immigrant "Scarface." It is usually far better for a native English speaker to don the accent of a foreign country. This mistake is made over and over again with films from Europe, Asia and Latin America without native English speakers. Foreign actors screw the sentences up really bad and it is distracting. Subtitles are OK for some films but most people avoid them (rare exceptions) unless they are used in a limited way.

I wanted to see this because Penelope Cruz is always dazzling both physically and as an actor. She dazzles again but Pablo is incomprehensible. Could not understand a word Bardem said except at the end. He also does not get mic'd up properly so when he mumbles his lines face down he is inaudible.

However, the reason this was a bomb at the box office despite big name stars is the title and premise. Most people in the USA do not want to hear about "loving" a drug dealer. There is nothing winning or alluring about the premise. She broke up a marriage to get him so you know she was an idiot from birth. Even for hard core drug-runner movie fans there was no one to really root for.

Freaks and Geeks
(1999)

A Complete Flop for Obvious Reasons
Everyone in America knows that schools are filled with drug addicts who do not work hard to achieve and try to get as many other kids to take drugs as possible. Users are weak and dependent people who need to be followed and imitated to feel worthy or important. So here we have a series largely devoted to dopers who do nothing but get wasted and act stupid. This is very appealing to druggies in the TV viewing audience who use drugs and remember using in school. They think what dopers do and say is funny while normal people just gawk and gape in surprise at the total lack of wit, intelligence and humor.

Yes, we have terrible schools that allow kids to be stoned and do nothing. They are not disciplined or removed because parents have nowhere to put them either, and do not want to be bothered. Therefore thousands of lawsuits have caused the public school system to buckle and accept anything and everything students want to do. Unfortunately, the geeks are ridiculed and isolated because the drug addicts are seen as free thinking experimenters instead of total losers who should be in programs or prison. Most countries in the world do not put up with drug users like Western countries.

So do we want to watch unfunny life adventures of drug users? Most of us do not, but Hollywood still keeps trying to make us like drugs and kids who use them. They are winning more and more converts because drugs do break down the will to succeed. Why try if a state will call you disabled and pay you to do nothing but use drugs everyday? I did watch most of the episodes in the hopes that some kind of fundamental truths would emerge but few ever did.

Joker
(2019)

Why Todd Phillipps Made This Film
You will notice the far left journalists: the New York Times, Rolling Stone, The Guardian and the rest all despised "Joker." They made up different prevarications such as no fun, meaningless, nihilistic, dangerously provocative and on and on. The real reason they had to gang up on this film and Phillipps is that we are seeing this fantasy become reality in America.

The far left run cities: Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York, Baltimore, Detroit, Chicago and others look like Gotham. They are literally overflowing with filth, drug addicts, mental patients roaming free and bureaucrats running and enjoying it all. The are supported by hypocritical filmmakers with loads of money, politicians, and business leaders.

Phillipps is famous for non-PC, in-your-face comedy: rude, crude and breakout funny. But he cannot make films like that anymore. No one can. The far left speech police are violent, hate-filled, arrogant and stupendously self-righteous. Joker is the far left dystopia that is our future, coming soon to a neighborhood near you. They want the border eliminated, jails opened, locks broken and the rights of middle class citizens taken to allow mass bedlam.

They want the hard working, value driven bedrocks of society mutilated, defeated and destroyed in the ensuing melee. That has been their dream as under-realized by Marx, Lenin, Stalin, Hitler and modern socialists.

This is a great film. It is a monumental film. It is not a comedy, it is a horror film. It is the kind of horror film few people pay to see: psychological horror and terror. Then why has it already made more than a billion dollars? Because there are so many people cheering for this very outcome. Others see it for it's greatest value: a look at the future.

Ford v Ferrari
(2019)

Shockingly Good If One Can Discount the Ending
Never have I given a film a 10 without an ending that was satisfying and worth the wait, but this is a real film made with real film. That raises the enjoyment of it so dramatically that I made an exception. It is true to the original story based on several biographies. Matt Damon and Christian Bale look and sound like the real characters. The acting of everyone is superb. You can watch it for the acting and most of the story alone or you can admire the beautiful look of real film: the rich color we took for granted in the 60s, 70s, and 80s. Most movies since the 90s look terrible. It is unfortunate so many have gotten used to bad looking films. For example take the Seth Rogan film "50/50" as an example of how worthless good stories are with the dystopic glare and bright, diffused white light of video. They are colorless. "Sex and the City" is another good example. In that 2008 film the ocean is a dirty brown in one romantic scene!

This film is for everyone: car or racing lover, or not. I am neither, but was enthralled from start to finish. It was not just the beauty of the color using real film and genius photography, it was an amazing script. It is a good story but the end of the real life hero Ken Miles is sad and weighs the film down.

Little Women
(2019)

Stunning Affirmation of Life, Family, Marriage, and Love
My heart skipped a beat several times (no exaggeration) upon seeing some of the picture book scenes. We have not seen such perfection in staging, color, and lighting since David Lean. Greta Gerwig has entered the filmmaker hall of fame with this truly epic film. I will not quibble about the script, because there are too many good things happening here to pick out flaws, and it is too good for Hollywood, bypassing many of the modern tropes for authenticity.

There are three movies here beginning with; child-like hope for the future, disappointment and bitterness over reality, and then what we find during the last third of the film, about which I shall not comment. It is worth the trip.

See it in a theater now, especially if you are in your thirties or younger and have only been exposed to the films of the 90's up until now, when real film was eschewed for colorless videos. This one was made with real film's rich texture, depth, and true-ness. These are wonderful locations and settings. Not one scene is given short shrift and there are none lacking attention to detail.

It does seem too long at times so be prepared to relax and absorb. In some ways it is an homage to another great period piece in honor of a classic book "Pride and Prejudice," by the amazing Joe Wright. Greta with this film rivals that one. Her script is not better, but her craftsmanship is equal to or greater.

Team up with Whit or Noah again Greta, and write your own story with all of the sparkle of your past films and all of the magic of this one.

PS For the critics I would add that most of the world does not have social security. Asians are taught from a young age they will have to support parents when they become too sick or too old to work. Most continents have the same ethic and tradition out of necessity. In the time of Louisa May Alcott marriage and family were everything in the USA and Europe, just like the rest of the world. How you chose meant survival or no survival. Not choosing both was rarely an option. Was life made better after the government got involved in every part of our lives?

The Rhythm Section
(2020)

Even made the popcorn taste bad. Sooo sooo BAD. Did I mention it's bad?
Could not make it to the end. Lively is not box office material because she's a so-so actress. Nothing great since Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants which was very endearing. A Simple Favor and The Shallows were great stories executed well, but people did not go to those movies to see Blake.

She was probably the only name actress desperate enough for such a part, willing to score another one for affirmative action, diversity, and victim-hood. But she drew the short straw with this debacle. Most do not see heroin and other dalliances as inevitable choices after personal tragedy.

I am biased. "Atomic Blond" is the gold standard now. It is the great spy/revenge film where a stunning Charlize Theron did her own stunts. She had long, unedited fight scenes. Plus, the story was brilliant and the ending superb. This one shows up the clunker actress as wrong for the part and not willing to go the distance in preparation. She does not have the physicality, presence, or skills necessary so it is over-edited. They were going for Jason Bourne but all they got was "Peppermint."

Destination Wedding
(2018)

Hated them both for the first 10 minutes, then annoyed and then ...
Amazing what a really good writer can do with characters that seem despicable. She is a screeching, liberal shrew and he is a loser. They both function well enough to have high paying jobs. She mostly attacks in the beginning while he sticks around. Maybe there is someone for everyone out there somewhere afterall. Keanu lifts his own veil and he is just as screwed up if not more so as Winona Ryder.

You must love clever dialogue to enjoy a film like this. The cynical sarcasm spews at us with every sentence. The pathos then becomes recognizable. This is truly the every-man/every-woman. We all have the same feelings and thoughts. They are just not this freely expressed or so ever-present. There is a scene and I won't say who but it is THE funniest and most outrageous sex ever portrayed and I have seen every Woody Allen film he ever made.

What a tragedy critics today are so obtuse and the movie-going public so illiterate and stoned, because this should have been recognized and seen. Winona Ryder is as deft with her body language, facial expressions and lines as anyone ever. I kept thinking how much we have missed without her in a lot more films. Keanu Reeves too was priceless. I cannot wait to see it again.

The Big Short
(2015)

Hilarious reviews here with people actually believing this happened
Most reviews rave about the accuracy of this film. The saddest thing about our country is how terrible our schools and media are now. Yes, this is a truly great film from a story and acting standpoint, but it is fiction and propaganda.

If you want the real story read nysalesman's 3 star review "Short on Truth." Blame the Clintons, Bush, and Obama for high crimes against us all. The banks and corporations will always try to make money as each of us does in our own way to survive. But in this case the banks were forced to lend to anybody who wanted a house no matter how bad their credit or employment history, as long as they were part of a minority. If lenders did not fund every loan there were huge fines to pay, not to mention total government takeover. Many other things were done by Congress to make this happen but basically no one ever paid the price besides us. Bush added 5 trillion to the debt and Obama 10 just printing money and borrowing from China to pay for it.

I have been researching Hollywood historical pics made during the past 40 years. Never believe a biopic or historical drama unless you have already done thorough research yourself. They are always lying; propagandizing, and convincing who to hate. They stoke emotions for their agenda and make up facts. Don't forget who caused the Great Depression: Congress and the Fed, not Wall Street.

Brooklyn
(2015)

Great film with a great flaw
Many people enjoy a good period piece with great actors and a good overall story. Brooklyn did extremely well at the BO for an indie. I will see anything with Saorise Ronan ever since Hanna, but the ending left me cold. It could have been easily remedied but perhaps the writer was tapping into a true story and could not veer from the facts, even though based on a novel.

No critic I read had anything but praise for Brooklyn and I enjoyed it enough to see it in the theater twice, but it does have a serious problem. Ellis played by Ronan is the feminist heroine daring to be different and go against her mother's wishes and local customs by moving to America. She wants to have a better life and America is the land of opportunity. She falls in love with a boy she meets at a dance in Brooklyn. The boy urges her to marry him before she goes back to Ireland to attend a funeral. He does not want to risk losing her. She does not want to rush into the marriage but does so anyway. They marry secretly.

In Ireland she gets a part time job bookkeeping (a skill she was trained for in the USA) and very much enjoys it. Her work is appreciated and Ireland is looking much better to her. A wealthy, good-looking man takes her out to dinner and then falls in love with her. She falls in love with him. She never tells anyone she is married but leads the man to believe she is considering marriage and a new home with him. She is apparently planning on becoming a bigamist when someone finds out she is already married. We get a speech from her about small-minded people in small towns and how nothing has really changed there. She decides to go back to Brooklyn and stay with husband number one. Ellis does not really have a choice, does she? She recognizes that she will be utterly rejected by everyone when they find out. The director uses several tricks to keep us from thinking about this problem, such as her letter of explanation we are never allowed to read.

She is not a heroine because she was never honest. There was nothing wrong with the locals thinking she was a schemer and a shrew for never telling anyone the truth about her marriage and lack of availability. We are spared by the director from seeing the damage done to her new, prospective husband who was very much in love with her. So, it is a bittersweet tale.

I accepted the story line at first because she was young and naive but that flies in the face of praising her as a ground-breaking and brave feminist.

Long Shot

How Much Does Hollywood Hate Middle Class Religious Values?
About this much. A movie about nothing real used as an excuse to push drugs, lower IQ, vocabulary, values and standards. I am not religious, in fact, I am a hard core evolutionist, but I hold values in high regard. Drugs and profanity are signs of decay, not progress. The best laugh in this film is the cost of making it and the worldwide box office. A huge bomb that lost a ton of money and that is hilarious because this was a loathsome ode to stupidity. When I travel the world I am appalled by British boys and men. Lower IQ's you will never find and no sentence is uttered without F, F, F. This is the goal. To take high aspirations, hard work, and achievement, demean and denigrate them so often and so severely that no one even remembers Jane Austen or Dickens, much less self discipline and the effort to be better. This is where America has been heading because of Hollywood values and the Seth Rogan lard asses of the world.

Playing It Cool
(2014)

LOL Hilarious
No, not any of this film. There was not a funny line in the whole script. What was LOL hilarious was that all of these big stars, big directors, producers and marketers blew their wad and barely made a million bucks worldwide. That is just hysterically funny to me and many others. The reviews I read complained about pseudo-intellectual spew fests and unlikable characters, but shouldn't even the worst story and characters at least have some funny lines if it is supposed to be a comedy? Maybe I am old fashioned, but just saying the f word and mentioning Balzac does not make many beyond the newly de-educated laugh.

On a serious note, all of these cheeky lines delivered by smirking actors can actually bring on severe nausea. Some people will withdraw into a dark room and stare aimlessly wondering about a purpose. Others will go for another fast food frenzy. That is because we have elevated urban culture; drugs, rap, grousing about injustice on social media, and self-defeating indulgences, while eschewing better vocabularies, building things, reading the classics and working hard. .

Life is pretty good here for some people, but not because of Hollywood products, or being one of their sycophants, it is because they have left Hollywood to enjoy real life. Films like this only make life unpleasant.
