Reviews

Beacon 23
(2023)

I think I know why there are bad reviews
The actors aren't a problem, they're all pretty good. Male lead is actually impressive. Story iis interesting and develops.. it goes somewhere and is somewhat original. The sets are good and though (necessarily) a bit limited, it's fine. I liked watching it but it wasn't 100% gripping.

So what's wrong? Well.. there is no subplot. While the dialogue isn't bad and the script is fine, it loses tension because there is no sufficient subplot to create enough dramatic tension. Yes the lead went AWOL, but his feelings and the tension not built into the story in an effective way. The focus on the main story and lack of subplot significantly reduces the tension in the series. Despite this, I enjoyed watching it, but it's something I could watch while ironing or washing up because really all I want to do is find out what the plot conclusion is, and I'm not heavily invested in the characters. Worth a watch of you like scifi and some interesting ideas but don't expect it to be the next Battlestar Galactica, or Moonhaven (yes I loved Moonhaven even though it has a bad rating for some reason).

Wolf Like Me
(2022)

A missed opportunity
Wolf like me isn't bad. The little girl actress annoys me for some reason. The male lead is a bit dull as a character, which is intended, but still makes him boring. The female lead is ok, but doesn't seem to really fill the role. It's not a typical werewolf type series, and is more for adults: going through relationship and family problems as well as the problems of one being a werewolf. I think the concept is very good.. a more serious look at how a woman copes when ahe has to eat live meat every month, and her isolation from others. It's almost sweet. I sau almost coa despite a good concept it doesn't fully utilise it. The episodes are short but drawn out. The depth of emotion isn't quite reached. Some of the writing is just a bit lack-lustre. For example, and extended scene in episode 5 shows how the couple and daughter make a nice family, watching an animal docuementary together, at a fairground together etc. Nothing at all original. I feel this could really have been a really impactful series, but it settles for mediocre. I'm still watching it, but it's one of those series that I'll probably give up with before reaching the end and not miss it. Who should watch it? Adults that like simple relationship stories with a superficial pinch of fantasy. Try it, I expect you'll feel the same as me.

Dream Scenario
(2023)

Sweet, sad guy in a weird turmoil
Nicholas cage, unlike the mass of b-movies he's always doing, acted well in this as the unfashionable and unattractive professor. As an ecologist myself I laughed at some of the stuff, especially the lack of credit for his work (I wrote a whole report for a team, and female team lead just places her name first). Anyway, it was an interesting story, looking at how a society condemns a man for not actually doing anything wrong himself. Reflects on how irrational people are. While some nice sequences with some humour at times, I felt it misses something. Maybe another layer to the story or subplot. Ot was just about this guy that unwittingly appears on people's dreams. Acting was good. Interesting progression of the film. Had feeling of '...of the spotlessind' but story very different. For me, it was worth a watch and a good production. But it's not a masterpiece. Cage's acting was probably the best thing about the film. If you like a popular film that's a bit offbeat and am interesting concept (but not alot of story) you'll like it. If you're above 14 I think most people will enjoy it, but don't expect too much, even though most won't hate it either.

The Holdovers
(2023)

Clever, well made
If you watch the trailer, you'll see how it is filmed in a 70s pastiche, but excellently done. From the crackling film to the fonts used in the titles, the panning of the camera, the type writers, the scenes, this was expertly filmed. Indeed even the story line brings you back to an era where people made proper stories for their films. Certainly the best antidote to DC and Marvel universe CGI rubbish.

So, the acting was spot on. Although the three leads were all good, Da'vine managed to get a sob out of me at one particularly moving moment. In no way does it work hard to get emotional effect, it is subtle and shows the beauty of each of the characters hearts, though each one is pretty unsightly in their own way (skinny tall teen, cock-eyed teacher, overweight cook). The supporting characters were also interesting, but the main story revolves around the developing caring relationship between the grump lonely teacher and the dejected and rebellious skinny teen. Definitely a worthwhile watch, especially on a Sunday afternoon and especially if you're over 40 and can appreciate how well they've made it look like a film from the 70s. Overall quite heart warming and touching without being at all cheesy. Congratulations to the team that made this.

Manodrome
(2023)

Good, different, but non-conclusive
Eisenberg and Brody are great actors, and are also great here. Eisenberg portrayed a complex, unpredictable uncomfortable character. It's not like fight club, not about toxic masculinity. It's about a deeply disturbed and shy man who's life is not under control and he gets involved with this group who are supportive and feel themselves outcasts from society, but seems he doesn't even connect with them too well. It's not bloody or excessively violent, though it is a bit dark in places and a few people are shot.

To be honest, it felt very original, but also quite risky from the director. The main character is obviously struggling with some inner demons, but we never find out what that is, and though there are strong hints, the film in many ways felt in-conclusive. In some ways this was good - it's like life; we rarely find easy solutions. There were some unexpected turns of event in the film, and there is a sense of underlying theme of men caring for and feeling the suffering of other men, and the struggle that men have in a society controlled by women's desires and needs. However, it didn't feel like a single story in the end, but more like a snapshot into some messed up kids life as he struggles to deal with his feelings of worthlessness. If it a good movie? It's different, I think it's something that could be studied in a film class, but fundamentally I think many people will find it a little depressing, inconclusive and unsatisfying. I'm glad I watched it, but you're not going to finish the film feeling upbeat or happy.

The Afterparty
(2022)

Amazing season 2
Season 1 was watcheable and a novel amd interesting structure. There was a murder, and the protagonist female cop interviews people on the house before her boss turns up. She's charismatic, quirky and fun. Each person remembers the night of the murder differently (am interview for each episode) and, with some humour, she pieces together the evidence. It's well acted, interesting and great idea to see the same event from different perspectives, slowly releasing both clues about the murder, and details about the people's inter-relationships.

Season 2 is the same structure. A new murder, at a wedding. To be honest I felt less interested in who was the murderer, than just understanding how the characters fit together. Season 2 is a level above season 1. The actors are amazing. The characters are all unique and special and interesting. What I really love is the clever dialogue: witty, at times funny, and indeed the interviews not only reveal details but say very much about the characters and how they think about themselves. Awkward fat guy seeing himself as a bit of a detective from a crime noir film, for example. I certainly think second season should win awards. Original approach, great dialogue, lead and co-lead are fantastic; korean guy is very funny and great actor, and each episode is gripping, interesting and funny all at the same time. Hats of to the writers and production team too. Writing this review before the conclusion of season 2, but some of the episodes already are amazing. Also, I loved the music (classical style, but great composition).

Corner Office
(2022)

Off-beat, drab but interesting
So all based in very grey offices where we don't know what work they do. A narrative voice (protagonist) throughout, but given that it is like a study of this man, but through his own eyes, seems necessary.

Having known a schizophrenic, the behaviour and response to those around him seems very much the case. For example "She told me her name, Elisa. But I had nothing to say about her name so I didn't amhave anything to respond".

I'm really getting to love Jon Hamm. He's had some great roles recently. I think he plays this well, in the drab, strange way. Another actor could have easily pushed this into comedy, which it isn't. This is not a depressing film, but also not a fun film. It is more like a character study. I enjoyed it, and I think it has alot of merit for originality, performance and dialogue. However, kids and adolescents will hate it. Adults that want fun, action or humour will hate it. It's not an 'artsy' film, but it is interesting. I recommend to serious adults that have worked in an office under excessive beurocracy, and maybe are interested in the view of life through the eyes of a repressed schizophrenic.

I would love to have given it a 7, as that was its value to me, but I think lack of general commercial appeal brings it to a 6.

No Hard Feelings
(2023)

only film I've ever given 10 stars
This is a beautiful film. It's funny, not too heavy, but the acting is great, and the story is lovely and well put together. Not sure how they did it, but for me it hit all the right buttons. Jennifer Lawrence should get an oscar for this film. I know she won't, because it's not that type of film where people are clamoring for oscars (ie with lots of CGI or with over-emotional angst). However she plays her character of a down on her luck beach bum that needs a car, has a fun character, but deep heart, sooooo well. I was literally transfixed, and when I turned to my wife to ask her about the film, I saw she too was transfixed. I never really rated her much in previous films, but either she has really grown as an actress, or the role was just perfect for her.

So, premise is that woman needs to date this guy on behalf of his parents (to bring him out of his shell) so that they'll give her a car. However, the interaction between the leads is at once funny and beautiful. I think because it is a little non-conventional without being arty (very young guy with older woman) and didn't over-egg any of the important points it was making in any way, it made it a very touching film for me. Totally non-superficial, non-arty, non-gritty, just perfectly made film. Cuedos to the writer and director too.

Who will enjoy this - absolutely everyone. Has nudity and sexual references (obviously) but no sex scenes, so not suitable for very young kids. Some of the scenes were hilarious and I'll remember for a long time, but I don't want to mention them here as it may spoil it. Supporting actors were also cool and played well.

Simply watch this, and be transfixed.

Maggie Moore(s)
(2023)

a breath of fresh air
I'm really starting to like Jon Hamm in his recent movies. He plays a calm mature and sweet man very well. This time as a policeman. If you are tired of CGI films without a story, of Hollywood pap that just wants kids through the doors, try this film.

So it's a murder mystery (for the policeman, the viewer knows who did it, but its nice watching them go through the process). Also, there are novel and interesting characters that interact beautifully. To be honest all the characters were acted well, and half the film really is about the dilemmas of the 4 or 5 key characters. Although there are some deaths, its not excessively gory and it isn't an action film. Reminds me a bit of the murder mysteries we'd see in the late 80s, but in this story is much better, characters are 3d, and filming very polished. Yep, the story is a little quirky, but pretty believable. There is a romantic sub-plot, which is complicated by one being a widower, and the other being divorced, but it takes on some modern themes very well.

For me a good film requires a good and well told story, with good characters. This is what this film is. No high drama (except may a little toward end, and a bit of a surprise), but I loved the way it was presented and paced. Made it feel like real life without being dull at any time. Maybe the film is an 8, but I gave it a 9 just because it was laid out so well and skillfully.

Maybe people under 25 will find it slow or no dramatic enough, but I think most older people (male and female) will find this a fulfilling film covering a few interesting themes and with an interesting murder mystery aspect. Comedy? Not really, though some light touches which are sweet/funnyish. Go on, give it a go.

Paradise
(2023)

Intriguing and great backdrop
So I watched dubbed into English, which maybe reduced quality a bit (but didn't down rate for this).

So guy who's a top recruiter of donors for extracting years of age and donating it as rejuvenating cure realises not always as great as it seems.

Film involves escape, kindnapping and a little action. The story is more or less unpredictable, with some interesting twists and I think they've played the moral conundrums very well eg how do you talk to someone that looks like a child buy mentally is much older, how do you continue a life with someone who you wanted a child with but is now almost 70 years old. I think in a subtle way it shines a light on the true nature of age and how we see people, as well as the real changes we have with age. Of course that's all pretty subtle and the main aspect if the film is a drama as this guy tries to get justice for his wife, and how they navigate moral conundrums

What I love is that the setting, some time in the near future, is really well done. Mostly like today, but with occasionally slightly different looking cars, but also a backdrop story of the baltic states leaving the EU, and tourism dropping. Interesting backdrop and buildings and scenes makes it seem like it comes from a well thought out book. This could easily have been like a 3 season series. Definitely worth watching if you like drama and scifi.

The Blackening
(2022)

Relies on a charicature of black american culture
To watch this film you need to be obsessed with blackness, low IQ and completely stoned.

I like black (by which I mean black american) comedies and romantic comedies, and accept that there is some stupid (often drug related) humour, amd that's part of the fun. They're fun films.

This seemed to start well (ish) but degraded into some sterotype of black american culture, inferring that it's a trite, woke, superficial, and anti-intellectual culture. I guess cos the film revolves around a game where people get killed if they can't answer black culture questions, combined with a pretty weak plot and jokes that don't really work, as well as 2 dimensional people, it just overall comes over as a disappointing and boring film. If this film gets televised, I'm sure people would be looking forward to the adverts. Will anyone enjoy this? Few people I expect, just the drunk and/or stoned. Not recommended.. watch something like We Have A Ghost or there was another spooky black comedy which was pretty good last year too.

Poker Face
(2023)

Watchable
The premise is that this is a woman on the run, who solves murders because she can tell when people are lying. She's also super observant amd has a great memory for detail. Obviously a homage to the 70s and to Columbo. She has a similar offbeat character, speaks a little strange, is an outcast, pauses as she's walking out of a door to ask the most important question that blows open the case.

It's well paced and interesting but the story is intriguing but not necessarily intelligent. There is no real build up in the episodes of particular climax.. a murder happens, you then see where she was at the time (often around the same area, but wasn't evident in the original presentation of the scene, then she deduces how the person was killed. Because we know at the start, and because there aren't any real reveals, the drama aspect isn't quite there. However her character is idosyncratic and thus interesting. Indeed it's interesting in the way that say, the new Equilizer series is interesting ie a relaxing story you want to follow but not entirely gripping.

Similarly to Columbo there is little progression between episodes and they're more or less stand alone. This may disappoint as limited character progression (and she's the only one that is the same in each episode, as she moves to different towns). This lack of requirement to be gripped to a continuous plot also has advantages though . You can watch as you want without having to remember what passed before.

Should you watch it? Yep, I think most people will like it, but while the concept is novel, it's not something that is ground breaking or will leave you gasping for more. So go ahead.. it's watchable.

Beau Is Afraid
(2023)

Why?
This film will have you asking why? Why did I watch that garbage? Why did a film over 3 hrs barely have a plot? Why did people spend so much money on the sets for such a poor film?

If you want to watch a very long film about an old psychotic guy having a crazy screaming emotional dream, maybe this is the film for you. While there were some amusing scenes at the start, because of their crazyness, this soon becomes boring. There is no emotional attachment to any 'character' (not enough depth to even call them 2 dimensional).

So there seems to be some underlying plot about the guy feeling guilty for not visiting her one time, and then a delve into a dream like non sensical surreal past.

Who would like this? No one who isn't on LSD. Should you watch it? No

Sad, because Hereditary is my favourite horror film of all time, but I'll definitely be careful seeing another film by this director.

Somewhere in Queens
(2022)

Adorable movie
Wish the movie world had more of this. I know those stories are out there, but we get bombarded with reboots and comic adaptations with weak storylines and zero depth.

This film is understated, and revolves around the father and his basketball son, with the friction arising between a caring father wanting a better life for his son, while the son wants to follow a path which isn't necessarily of his father's choosing. Also a sub-plot of first love, and the conflict within his girlfriend that cares for the boy but doesn't want a serious relationship.

If you like Ray Romano, you'll adore the film. It's not really a comedy, but there are definitely funny parts to it, and his measured dry approach is delivered beautifully. Hats off to Sadie Stanley that plays the girlfriend - she did what was quite a complex role, fantastically. I'm a 52 year old guy and felt weepy at the end. It's a touching film, and maybe won't have the profile or impact of an epic film, but it's a really beautiful story of a sweet Italian-American family coping with some problems in their lives. It's the type of film you want to hug, and I'd watch 100 films done like this.

Who should watch it? Anyone that likes real life, touched with comedy, romance, and anyone that likes the Italian-American family vibe. Most adults with a heart will love this film. Of course, it's not a thriller, action film or all out comedy. It's touching (but not a soppy girly chick-flick). Writing and especially the dialogue, if fantastic.

Robots
(2023)

Fun, a bit silly, but enjoyable
Some films you want to cry, some films you want to tell a serious historic story of love, suffering or redemption. This is not one of those films, it's a fun film to relax to which will also keep you entertained.

So, robots that look like humans have replaced illegal immigrants in America. They now do all the chores such that some people even send them out to their jobs well they chill at home, and it even goes so far that this guy uses one to find dates. Of course these robots want a life of their own eventually, and try to escape. It's like a whacky tale of unexpected romance, with some amusing twists. If you like the type of 'house party' genre, you'll love this, bit actually the story is better thought out than these. It's still situational comedy, and yes the story isn't amazing, but it's there and it's well put together. The characters were fun, and I definitely recommend this to any adult (some non explicit sex scenes) who wants to relax and just see a fun (but not childish) movie.

Misanthrope
(2023)

Loved it
It's difficult to rate films sometimes, and I feel this has a harsh rating. Truth is, I loved all the characters. They felt human. You've got a powerful intelligent woman lead, but they don't play on that as some rubbish 'woman power' thing, it's just who she is. There is a gay guy, but he's not gay to preach some morality tale, it's just who he is. Even the psychotic guy you can empathise with. It's well filmes, well paced and gets away from formulaic Hollywood to produce a good, intriguing crime thriller story. Maybe not groundbreaking oscar material because it's not doing something too radical, but it is an extremely well crafted film. The type of film that would make you come back for more by this director. I only rated a 7 as anything higher I tend to apply to films that change cinema, but in terms of enjoyment, it was a 10 for me. Without 'twists and turns' it delivers mystery and drama by the excellently paced reveals of different aspects of the film, and really not knowing how or indeednwhether they'll find this serial killer. Also, the character of the serial killer is pretty original. Indeed I'd say it is the best serial killer film I've ever seen (ok, so Silence of the Lambs was ground breaking, but has become such a trope now I don't include that film). I'd compare it with Zodiac, but it just jas a different feel to it.

Any adult should watch this. It's not horrific in terms of blood, but focuses on the aspects of the case, finding a serial killer, also the difficulty of working with formulaic police, governers and FBI that just want a conviction. Male and female lead were excellent. I'm pretty sure most adults will enjoy this film.

The Mother
(2023)

Formulaic
Ok, so it's completely formulaic except for the bits where super agent Jennifer Lopez does absolutely stupid things. So she has the main baddy in her sniper sights but decides to kill a minion first. They see her, so she runs away without her gun and has to find an inventive way of killing the guy with a car. She chases someone on a motorcycle, then has to stop for some school girls she could easily squeeze past. After lots of amazing riding she runs into a stationary car, and while she has a problem squeezing past school girls, there's nothing wrong knocking a complete stranger out with a bike helmet. It's one of those action films that seems so ungritty and unrealistic that it seems to have been written by a 15 year old who has spent their life just watching other action films.

Story? Poor. Acting? Weak. Mystery? Missing. Production quality? Well, that's ok (not artistic, but ok quality).

Should you watch it? Only if you have something else to do at the same time, like ironing, knitting or chatting. Stroking a cat is far more entertaining than this film. Not sure how any spoilers can be told for this film, you'll know the story from the very first 5 minutes.

The Pope's Exorcist
(2023)

Pretty but weak
Russell Crowe is a good actor with lots of charisma. The plot has some interest but isn't delivered well because there is too much action and special effects at the end. The same story, with the same actors, would have been better with subtle reveals and more feeling for the family suffering possession. It's like too many films today: action and special effects as a priority and the story and characterisation coming second. In many ways I feel it was a missed opportunity. I feel Russell Crowe could have done more with a more measured film. Some bits too much of a copy of 'the exorcist'. Are they tipping a hat to that film? Maybe, but creating emotion and an intriguing story line would have been better.

So, yeh, watch the film. You won't hate it. However, it's not directed at an intellectual audience, probably for those around 16 or 17 years old. Crow could have done this film as a retirement project because while he's good, it's like the film was aching to provide more depth for him. I blame the modern Hollywood script and direction teams that have made this film too similar to any other adventure/horror film. A forgettable film but will pass the time if nothing else to do.

Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves
(2023)

Like a great D&D game
So for me it started a bit slow, introducing the characters I guess. But the characters were all fun and interesting. Hugh Grant was espetacular in his role. If you've ever played D&D you'll love this, as it has the features of mystery, characters with different abilities, small puzzles to work out, and some brawling. The story unveils nicely and with good pacing. Overall great fun with mild humour and appropriate use of action. It does something the Marvel stupid movies can't do.. integrate a nice story with interesting characters, and while having special effects and action, they're all secondary and supporting the story. With MCU now it's more like an acid trip with little sense. Anyway, I think most will enjoy this and have a warm feeling at the end. Suitable for young teens. I loved games similar to D&D like Warhammer, Runequest, Middle Earth and that nice feeling you have when you've had an interesting and intriguing game, is the same feeling at the end of this fiilm. So, highly recommended. Of course, this isn't world breaking original cinema, but it certainly seems to have achieved what it set out to do.

Missing
(2023)

Surprisingly good
At first so much of the film was done through looking at a computer (social connections etc), and you'd think that would be boring, but it was excellently designed such that it pulls you in. In this way I would say it is very novel - yup many movies do chats on phone or computer, but this directs the action through CCTV, through video calls, body cams, social media conversations, much more, in such a dynamic and engaging way (especially for me, who actively avoids social media). The female lead is excellent, and the other characters are interested amd well acted. It's a film with several twists and turns, keeping you gripped, and the story is pretty good. While being a drame, it's quite sweet with little violence and no sex, so parents can watch it with young teens. Hope his film does well, because I believe alot of effort has gone into making an original approach work very well. Ground breaking is too strong a word, but it wouldn't surprise me if film schools use this as a model of what can be done when presenting a story using the media of social media/computers. Well done for this, definitely a contribution to the film industry. I gave it a 7, but it's a solid 7 which I think will have wide appeal.

Mrs. Davis
(2023)

You have to watch
Let me just clarify the title of this review. I've watched the first four episodes (all those currently out) and it is MIND blowing. It not that it's confusing, it's that you just don't know what to trust.

So the premise is that there is a nun who has refused to do what almost everyone else has done i.e. Listened to this AI computer that tells people what to do for their own benefit and sends them on quests. However, is the nun also being controlled by someone or something else? What the heck is happening and why is the series so genius and so addictive.

The characters are interesting, the plot is out of this world and like nothing you've ever seen before (I suspect the writers are either crazy or on LSD, but the plot is strange, gripping, and yet holds together). There are amusing things (not so much one liners as just the weird situations). The actors are spectacular, especially given the material I can see that they all must have been 110% invested in this.

If this wasn't so original I would have given it a 7 or 8, but it is groundbreaking and I seriously recommend watching it to anyone who likes sci-fi and is willing to be carried along on this glorious up and down ride. Because of this, I just wonder how long it can last or whether it may eventually exhaust the viewers. I mean, the advert in the final episode (don't want to give too much away) turns everything on its head, if things hadn't already been turned on their head multiple times already. Regardless of what happens in the future though, just these 4 episodes deserve an award for original script or writing, as well as acting.

Who should watch it? Kids will probably get completely lost and confused, and it's not spaceships scifi.. more a little in the future where nothing is different except for this AI computer putting people on missions. I suspect it appeals more to men than women since although there is romance, the depth of the romance isn't drawn out or really the focus. It's not high octane action, though there is some (and one of the para-military teams is very funny in their naivety and incompetence). I'm thinking all those adults that love plots twists, some humour, some action, and an intriguing story line and are maybe a bit crazy themselves (loving off-beat things) will love this. I guess think something like the first Matrix film, but less futuristic, more twists and less pretentious (and a different story line).

P. S. Some devout Christians may get offended at some parts (some integral references to Jesus and religious history, which are not normal) but I think they should persist with the series since I don't think it is at it seems. (I'm a Christian myself).

Fringe
(2008)

Easy to consume
So some strong stereotypes, crazy professor, kind but severe boss, intelligent and dynamic female agent.

Yep, it's very much like the xfiles (a series didn't really enjoy). So yep, pseudoscience and plot holes all over.. like when they were looking for criminal that had child but didn't know how to find the guy (didn't even think about a DNA database). Instead had to use some whacked out ridiculous technology.

So this team of misfits are wondering who is utilising the wacky scientist's research to do all sorts of weird (and often horrific stuff). Also a big bad company run by guy that shared lab with wacky scientist, which I guess will become a nemesis in future episodes. (I'm only in episode 3)

Anyway, is it worth the high rating? No. But it's pleasantly filmed, well paced and though acting isn't great (female lead has so gratuitously long pauses for effect) neither is it bad. Queen Latifah's Equalizer comes to mind when watching this: it has a plot, and it's easy to watch, but nothing artistic, very little original (though not necessarily boring). Should you watch it? Yes, especially if you like stuff like the X files. But don't expect to be blown away. It won't go down in history but it will form a pleasant part of general consumption for the public.

Beef
(2023)

at times slow moving, but original and great acting
So the major plus is that this series has an original feel and Ali Wong is an excellent and charismatic actress. Indeed the acting overall is pretty good. There are some interesting intros, sometimes off-beat (a weird bit with crows on episode 10) and there is some artistic filming at times, which doesn't interfere with the story but adds novelty. The directing is interesting, the characters are interesting and pull you in.

Fundamentally it's about two people in a road rage incident that go on to persecute each other in various ways, but it isn't as 2 dimensional as it sounds. The story arc includes the husband, the brother the cousin, all of whom have backgrounds and complex relations with the protagonists.

I think most adult viewers will enjoy it (its not overtly violent or sexual, but has violent and sexual themes at times) and it really is about human relationships and touches on philosophical points about how we relate to life, especially when we feel disappointed or unsatisfied. With all this, you'd expect me to give 8 or 9 stars yep? Well, true, but the only thing is that at times it seems a little slow paced. I wonder if every episode was actually 10 minutes shorter that it would be a better first season. But anyway, despite this I stuck through it for the characters and the story and it was mostly fulfilling.

If you like the first couple of episodes, you'll like the first season. I hope a second season arrives, but won't be losing sleep if they decide to wrap it up with the quaint ending they had after all the problems for season 1 (though I do want to know what happened to the characters injured after the robbery).

Rye Lane
(2023)

Original and beautifully romantic
A shy young man and a bubbly young woman meet after their break ups, comfort each other, help each other out of difficult situations and develop a loveable bond

Most of this film is a sweet dialogue, carried by the two leads, but they do it well and they set up a fun romantic vibe that draws in the viewer. It's cute type funny, and there is a great cultural view into the modern East End of London. Some foreign people may find it difficult to follow their London accents. This film is a romantic comedy, so if you like romantic comedies it's for you. However it's fresher than anything you'll have seen before, and sets a great alternative and fun mood with its use of music and directing, as well as with the acting. Probably should be an 8 but I gave it a 9 for the novel approach to a romantic film, and for not being sickly sweet or cheesy. It's not hilarious, but it isn't trying to be: it's mostly about young love. Watch it!

Avatar: The Way of Water
(2022)

Despite lots of action, it's still a gripping film
I'm tired of cartoony DC and Marvel films, and I'm not into action films, so why did I like this so much?

First, it's absolutely beautiful. The whale like creatures are so well done, indeed everything is such a craftwork of good (ie well produced and relevant) effects. The world created is amazing and the writer created a real depth, bringing the audience completely into it.

The story? Well, it's ok. But the characters are nice, and despite being blue creatures, it's easy to identify with them. I think it was well paced and well balanced. There IS alot of action, but it wasn't bland action, but intriguing and interesting... for example hunting those whale like creatures.

Though Avatar 1 was ground breaking, I would credit this as being an achievement in film history in the real depth of the world that you get immersed in, with almost all of it being well mixed makeup/CGI (as good CGI should be, you won't even think about it). This film should be on everyone's watch list. Won't be the best film you'll ever watch, but I'd guess everyone will enjoy it.
