Jamestown
(2017)

Great Acting but the script fails
I thought the acting was very good and the characters worthy, but right from the beginning the script was lacking and you notice things are off. Coming out of the water or the woods and the character is spiffy clean? the clothes are not perfectly period, though that won't bother many, the ship mooring as some others have mentioned, and honestly, a gay man wearing an earring in the open, in such a tough society? he'd have been flogged and tossed off the ship before it even landed. I found too many things that were not believable and a script lacking. Too bad because I love period drama's.

Café Society
(2016)

No charisma
There is zero charisma in the lead characters. The only one who didn't make me feel like I was watching a bunch of actors acting in a scene, was Steve Carell. He is wonderful, and can make you feel whatever the character is feeling, even the most mundane of emotions because he is that good of an actor. Most of the supporting cast was very good. Stewart looked as though she was trying to hold back her usual facial reactions and expressions the whole movie, and this was very distracting. I kept waiting to see if she was going to bite her lip or tense her face, what someone else called, Stewartisms. She just wasn't believable, or even likable. As for her costumes. Terrible. Quite ugly, really....an exception at the end of the film when she wears a big fluffy stole which showcases her looks. I feel she was miscast. Eisenberg was okay but I still felt like I was watching an actor act. A good film with great acting will have you engrossed in the characters and their stories. That just didn't happen here.

The movie itself? Costumes were mostly wonderful, lighting was beautiful but as a movie overall, rather "blah".

Star Trek Beyond
(2016)

Thoroughly uninspiring...spoiler
I am a trek fan and a sci fi fan. It seems that movies nowadays are dumbed down and action replaces an intelligent script anymore. I had high hopes that this movie would be smart and funny. Instead, the crew doesn't get much of a script at all, and the final insult, they end up fighting one bad guy, just like in the last couple of movies. That is getting old. The story, not that interesting and having plot holes. The 5 year mission should be exciting, instead the writers chose to show us that the crew were suffering fatigue. I suppose this was to build us up for the big event which should have been very exciting and entertaining for the audience. But instead, we suffer because we lose one of the main characters. The ship. WTF writers?? the ship is an integral part of the joy of Star Trek. I feel this was a big mistake.

The jokes are old, and not really funny... except for a joke by Kirk, near the end of the movie. Of course we expect Bones to be grumpy and predictable but how about the more serious part of Bones personality? like in the original series! or are we only going to get foreseeable jokes and quips anymore? The acting was good, as always. I feel Pine does an excellent Kirk and the others are great at their characters too. Though, the timing seemed off between many of the characters near the beginning of the movie. Anyone else feel this?

Overall, the movie is acceptable but really not up to snuff,as my father would say. 5 stars out of 10.
