Choices, Consequences, and Changed Lives not "Mere Christianity" I just got back from seeing this movie (on a Wednesday night) and there weren't many in the theater, but that's okay. I enjoyed it.
The critics don't like it, but so what? I rarely like what the critics like anyway.
My wife enjoyed.
Our friends enjoyed it.
Honestly, would you rather see a good story told poorly (and this one is not told poorly), or a hollow, soulless picture well-produced?? For as much as they had to work with (this IS based on a true story), I think they did a good job with their 1:40.
There are a few moments that felt contrived to me, but I don't need to spoil anyone else's enjoyment by commenting on them (I'm a lawyer so that's a hard habit to break!). However, knowing the true story of "Mincayani" and the 5 he helped kill, I think this was a pretty good movie-length telling of that story.
BTW - whatever "Christian" message there was was pretty restrained. This was about people, the choices they made (plus a "bit" of their motivation), the consequences of those choices and the lives affected - good and/or bad.
ALSO, best to sit through the credits, you can see and hear the real people, and get more insight into the Wodani way of looking at the world.
As for what others think, I'm no bible thumper (I'm a lawyer, remember), and I agree that many Christians are a bit too "forgiving" about movies they perceive as having some redemptive value (I tend to lean the other way). But I'm not going to toss ad hominem attacks at someone who rates this movie higher than I think it deserves.
Let the small-minded flame away, I say this movie EARNS it's 6.5 to 7 rating - from those who saw it. Anyone who doesn't agree with that, can take it up with everyone else who voted - that's the beauty of the "democracy" of the internet.
Besides, walking the narrow road usually means going against populism anyway...
