Star Trek Into Darkness
(2013)

Awesome as a movie... but not Star Trek
I give it a 9 out of 10 because as a movie, if you are not a Trekkie, if you had no idea what Star Trek was, it IS visually stunning and I went to see it twice.

However this is not really Star Trek. It is so far off the original... which makes me fear dearly for Star Wards that J.J. has taken over.

The movie is very predictable and it often made me say "Yeah, I've seen this before in the previous Star Trek by J.J". Same tricks same visuals, same theme..

I think Khan was played very well by B. Cumberbatch. He was scary, formidable, cold... but he lacked the charm of Ricardo Montalban . I liked the fact that Spock finally let his human side show through. He chose the Vulcan side but he IS half human. I know a lot of critics didn't like that BUT this IS a re-launch, the events that led the original Spock to be cold and logical did not transpire in this universe, so why Spock Jr, NOT chose his human side?

I liked the "coming of age" of Kirk... but I though McCoy was underutilized and a little cheesy. What the heck happened to Simon Pegg? We had trouble recognizing him!! Did he have a face lift or something?

All in all I liked it... I would love to see more. If you are a hard core Trekkie you will find a ton to complain about. If you keep an open mind, you will enjoy it!

Snow White and the Huntsman
(2012)

Stunning visuals, slow story & a horrible Snow White
I have mixed feelings about this movie. Although I did enjoy it, Kristen Stewart really rubbed me wrong as Snow White. I do not understand the rave about her, the girl has zero talent and two expressions she wears throughout all her performances!! (enough already of the close up of her with the mouth half open, the vacant eyes and the two huge front teeth showing!)

Charlize Theron was excellent! She brings depth and substance to her character, enough to care more about her than of Snow White! The Huntsman (too bad he doesn't get a name in the movie), played by Hemsworth is also, amazing in his part. His performance is excellent, very deep and believable.

Stewart as Snow White is stiff, awkward and clumsy. She could have been Bella in a different outfit! There was nothing new to her performance. You do not feel for her, you do not connect with her. She is supposed to be life itself but she is dull and stiff. There is nothing inspiring about her...

The movie had nice visuals but the story was a mish-mash of elements from other movies (Lord of the Rings comes to mind), with lots of gaps, leaving many questions unanswered whereas it seems to drag on and on at times for no reason.

It's a nice movie, but the trailer and posters promise something that is not delivered. I think mostly because of Stewart's performance. Maybe if we had a Snow White we actually LIKED more...?

The Avengers
(2012)

All I could think of as the end credits rolled was, MORE PLEASE!!! I would gladly have turned around and watched it again!

The Avengers is not a deep thinking film. You will not leave the theater enlighted or confused. It won't cause you to re-think your world or your ideals, it won't be a debate provoking film amongst your other intellectual friends... but it WILL leave you thoroughly entertained!!!

Those who are not of the genre will call it "mindless banter" and scoff at it. Those who are OK with being transported temporarily to a place where they can forget everything for 2 1/2 hours and just enjoy it, they will love it!

The previous movies have given substance, background and depth to the characters (most of them). They feel familiar and "make sense". The story line is simple and predictable, Evil returns, wants to enslave Earth, team of superheroes assembles and drive evil away... or do they? (stay through the ending credits, trust me).

It's not the "super story" that keeps you glued to your chair. It is everything else. Somehow you are not the slightest bit annoyed (or care for) the predictability of the story. I don't think a better director could have been chosen for this film. Joss Wheddon has just the right amount of childhood wonder still in him to re-create something magical ... it was like.. watching the coming book come to life!!

Please tell me there is a sequel!!!

The Hunger Games
(2012)

Didn't expect to like it... but I DID!!!
I am always suspicious when I go in to watch "teen-hero" movies. It's just not my style and I am starting to think I am getting old :) I can never connect with the younger characters and can never empathize with them like I did when I was in my teens.

I did not expect to like this movie but I DID!!! I thoroughly enjoyed it!! I must point out that I have not read the books so I can't offer an opinion on whether they were true to the books etc. What I can say is that this movie takes you to a wonderful trip into a new world and that even though the main actors are not well-known, they make you like them... heck, I even shed a tear or two!!

I would have liked a little more background in general as I kinda had the feeling the movie went off on the assumption that most viewers would have read the book. And also, the shaky camera was really, really, really annoying and dizzying. Other than that, I loved it. It was fast paced, did not bore you and was to the point. I can't wait for the sequel.. and I will probably go buy the books now.

John Carter
(2012)

Even 13 year olds walked out the theater!
"It's Disney" my husband insisted "It MUST be good, when have you seen a Disney movie that was bad?"... and Cars 2 immediately came to mind.

I am a huge fan, my sons and I have seen every.single.Disney.movie ever made. But my husband is wrong... Disney CAN make horrible movies. They just proved that with John Carter.

Let's start with the cast: Two unknown actors with horrible acting... and the Priness is not even pretty!! Very scanty outfits that leave little to the imagination (this is supposed to be a Disney movie!)... the acting was SO bad... but the movie start off with potential. All the ingredients were there. I quite enjoyed the graphics and special effects actually. But once again, there is no story!! So many plot holes, so many unanswered questions and too many clichés.

The story as is you would expect. Tough guy, hurt by love, Princess in distress and an evil King... Do I need to say more? I would have preferred less action or crappier graphics and more story. I had NO interest to the characters. I didn't care if they lived or died for that matter. They were all annoying.

I enjoyed Avatar SO much more. There was a simple story there too but at least I was made to actually care for these characters vs. the ones in John Carter. So you have two movies that are very similar in every respect... what is different? The director! I can't believe Andrew Stanton directed this! I loved Wall-E... so what went wrong with John Carter? The actors? So unknown and bad that they had to put Brian Cranston's name up as a lead (in my country) even though his role was only 5 minutes long? From all the characters HE was the only known one here and W. Dafoe of course, except he only does the voice for the Thark.

Even the 13 year olds in the theater walked out... what a waste of potential and budget...

Hugo
(2011)

Incredibly boring...
If you go in to see a magical film in the likes of Narnia, filled with magic and adventure, with a fantastic, mystery automaton at the core as the trailers suggest , you will be sorely disappointed. "Hugo" is nothing like that. The trailers are extremely misleading as to the actual story and with over 2 hrs runtime, and a story that goes nowhere, it is a VERY boring film.

Hugo is a little orphan boy that has gone through H!ll and back, yet there is absolutely no emotion from him, he is as hollow as the little automaton he is repairing. His little friend is absolutely a horrible actress too, her performance is awful! No emotion (plus she wears the same mismatched clothes all through the movie!)

The story starts out about a little orphan boy who lives in the Paris train station and winds up the clocks. He is in possession of a little mystery automaton which he is repairing because he thinks it holds a message from his dead father. By chance he hooks up with mystery toy shop owner George Melies (Ben Kingsley) and the story suddenly becomes about George Melies and *his* sorrow over how his movies were not what people wanted to see after WWI.

The cinematography is absolutely stunning. I did not see this film in 3D. The sets, the mood, the people, the costumes... fantastic!! But the story wasn't there. There was no magic, no mystery and no adventure. It was not a Narnia like film... it was a lecture on the early days of cinema and one of the great directors' work.

Another thing I noticed was that there was a lot of silence in the film. Great shots but you ended up staring at them for a good few minutes with no story or dialog happening. I can't see my kids sitting through this. I can't see an adult sitting through this!! I think a documentary of George Melies would have me much more interested than false advertising for a magical film...

Ben Kingsley performed as expected. He is really good at everything he does. Jude Law... well you blinked and he was gone. He had like 5 sentences to say. Now he can add "played in a Scorcese film" in his resume. Christopher Lee had a nice small part too. Sascha Baron Cohen... hmmm. I know a lot of people didn't like him but I found him good. Although he was supposed to be funny he did come out more annoying than funny but I did end up sympathizing with his character, so I liked him.

If only the story was there as promised (advertised) if this was indeed a magical adventure. If more talented young actors were chosen that delivered emotion... paired with the stunning visuals of the films it would have been... magic!! If only...

Up All Night
(2011)

For some reason, it rubs me the wrong way!
I liked the show very much when I first started watching it but now it rubs me the wrong way. I think Christina Applegate is great in her part and so is Maya Rudolph in hers. However Will Arnett, *really* annoys me. He is too... mushy, weak down right spineless in his portrayal of Chris. He is exactly the type of man I don't like I guess so that is why he irks me so much.

The whole show has pulled away from the whole "we had a baby" thing and is now more focused on the life of Ava (M. Rudolph). You are lucky to see a couple of shots of the Baby anymore and it's less about them being parents and be kept up all night or the baby doing new things or whatever. Plus some of the goof-ups these characters get into are SO ridiculous and not realistic at all, they irk me again. As a mom of very young twins, I don't get it... this is not how my life or the lives of our friends with kids are... too bad because I thought it would be closer to reality.

I kinda watch while I am doing the dishes now... half-heartedly. It's kinda silly now...

Real Steel
(2011)

Absolutely...awesome!!
The minute the movie ended, I turned to my husband (who had already watched it 3 times) and I said "let's go out and get more tickets, I want to watch it again!!". And I wasn't lying! What's best about it, is I can bring my 6 year old boys with me next time. There is nothing scary, gory, bloody or inappropriate for kids in it.

There is one scene in which Kenton gets beat up but it is shot in such a way, that honestly, my kids see more gore and fight when they watch Bakugan... so no biggie. That's pretty much the only scene in the film that I would have qualms about.

The CGI is excellent, one of the very best I have ever seen. You really do think the robots are right there with the actors. Both Jackman and Dakota Goyo (the little boy) deliver really well. Jackman seems to love fantasy characters (see X-men) so he fits right in, in this movie. He has you convince he is a loser, drunk and filmsy character...

I really wish when the movie comes out on DVD, there is some sort of extended version because I would certainly love to see more of it!!

Cowboys & Aliens
(2011)

A whole lot of aliens and a whole lot of cowboys and Indians
5 out of 10 because I really enjoyed it... and you will too if you turn off your brain for a couple of hours. If you really think about it, it does miss the mark... It could have been SO great but there was really no plot... or rather the plot that was, was so simple it ended up being silly!! Good actors, who embody their characters really well, wonderful CGI effects and rather unique and cool looking aliens with sharp teeth and bad intentions... if only there was a good story there.

I waited so long for this film to come out in cinemas, I was giddy with excitement but the film falls short of the mark. When I walked out of the movie I was all "yeah, nice!!" but after I read a few reviews and thought is over and memory of the cool effects is fading, I find myself disappointed at the lack of a plot. It's like the writers/producers said "Yeah! Cowboys AND ALIENS!! This will be cool! Let's do that..." and then set off to shoot some cowboys and aliens together... with no real purpose.

Why are the aliens attacking humans in a remote desert area? Because there is gold underground... and aliens want the gold. For what, they don't say. It would have been cool if they wanted it let's say because their planet's survival depended on it or they ate it or something. But it doesn't specify... they just want gold. And the aliens we do see in the movie, are just one ship, one scouting party. They are taking humans and torture them and kill them (with ease I might add) to "find your weaknesses"... uhm, they are 7 feet tall, with pinchers and sharp teeth.. surely they have understood by now that one blow and a human dies... why keep taking more? And apparently we never saw them again because at the end their ship gets blown up so that sends a signal to the other aliens that the gold on Earth is not worth their trouble.

Olivia Wilde, is an alien too... she took the human form to walk among us... her people were killed off by the aliens. How did she come to Earth? What does she look like as an alien? Where is her ship? Was she the sole survivor of her race? These are just a tiny fraction of all the unanswered questions and plot holes in the film. Seriously, don't they know by now, we, the audience, hate it when things are left in the air or when the explanation is ludicrous at best??

If only the story was better it would have been a wonderful, fantastic movie. Heck it had everything else going for it!!! Maybe if I was 15, "trivial" things like a good plot and character development wouldn't have mattered because... COWBOYS!! And ALIENS!! IN ONE FILM!! But, I am 33 and things that go "boom" fail to fascinate me these days...

Still, not a waste of your time or money... if you can turn your brain off for a couple of hours, you will enjoy it, it is well made, with killer CGI and a whole lot of scary looking and unfriendly aliens... not too bad at all.

Green Lantern
(2011)

Enjoyable, but could have been so much more!
I was looking forward to seeing "Green Lantern". I really do enjoy a good superhero movie and I have been a fan of the comic books for years. It was a nice, decent movie, with good acting but there was something that I felt was missing... I would have liked a little more character development and a little less... eye candy from the visuals.

The Good: Absolutely stunning visuals! Honestly, some of the best I have ever seen!! Mark Strong was awesome as Sinestro, and Peter Sarsgaard as Hector Hammond really did deliver!! Ryan Rennolds I believe was perfect for the part of Hal Jordan and was quite convincing and Blake Lively, well, she is pretty.

The Bad: Character development was poor. Very little background story and no chemistry between Hal and Carol. It was as if the film makers' main focus were the graphics, which were pretty amazing to be honest. The story was very straight forward, very Hollywood, with a cheesy happy ending, no real plot and no twists. Parallax was not at all how I thought he would be. I really expected the "bug" creature from the comic but OK. It reminded me for the villain from Fantastic Four, Gallactus, who consumed planets.

All in all, a nice movie, an entertaining way to spend a couple of hours but nothing more.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes
(2011)

San Francisco has a LOT of primates!!!
After seeing this movie, honestly I can't remember why I couldn't WAIT to go see it! It was terrible!! If it weren't for the bigger names in the cast, it would have been one of those B movies that only play on TV at 3am on a weekday!

The plot is terrible and full of holes for starters. I am a Sci-Fi freak so me wanting to believe in the super-natural/fantastic is a given. I really WANTED to believe but nothing was actually believable. I didn't feel anything for the characters, neither the human nor the chimp ones.

The graphics themselves were terrible. The primates were NOT believable. OK, the Uraguntans and the Gorrilas were but the Chimps? Waaaaay too human, even in size (Chimps are NOT 6' 1" when they stand up! and their legs are NOT that long!!).

And seriously how many primates does San Francisco have? In the beginning we are shown a primate "pound" with a handful of primates, then when they revolt, dozens and dozens escape. Apparently the SF zoo hosts about a hundred more etc. And please tell me, where do you buy those city cars than when a half-ton Gorilla jumps on them, they don't get a single dent!!! And their roofs don't cave in, because my jeep has a 130 lbs tolerance on the roof and that's waaaay less than what a gorilla weighs!

Terrible all around. I was so disappointed, I wish I had spent my money on something else. Don't go see it for the plot (there isn't any), don't go see it for the CGI (they are second class at best) and don't go see it for the actors, you see very little of them. And why on Earth was Ceasar so human looking? It is not explained or justified at all during the movie.

All around baaaad. And I hear there is a part two?? Oh no!

Super
(2010)

Not what I expected
I guess this film was too weird for me. I thought it would be a funny comedy but it was just... sad and pathetic. left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I thought my husband would love it but he also hated it. We both kinda waited for it to end just to see what would happen in the end.

There was lots of splatter but not too much gore but the whole mood of the film was just so pathetic and sad you almost wanted to cry. There were no action scenes really, just a sad, pathetic guy getting hurt. There is nothing in the entire film that made me feel I was spending my time nicely. Why would anyone want to watch this? Unless if you want to get depressed?

The film itself is not bad. The actors are good, the script is good but the general mood of it is just plain awful. Just sad.

Cars 2
(2011)

Very disappointing
We went to see Cars 2 with my boys who are 6 years old. We all loved the first movie, it had a simple to follow, heart-warming story and NO VIOLENCE!!!

This movie had TONS of violence, guns, "dead" cars, cars getting bashed, burned, tortured. ARE YOU KIDDING ME!?!?!? Just because it was cars and not people did you think the kids wouldn't notice? It was a very hard to follow story for them. A full-on James Bond movie, with twists and gadgets, except in animation and with cars instead of humans.

My twins could not repeat the story back to us when asked afterward. Espionage, oil wars and the likes were lost on the younger audience. The violence was full-on. Even Mater, the plain, redneck, lovable character was fitted with machine guns!! In fact the movie was more a Mater movie than a Lightning McQueen movie. We see McQueen in very few scenes compared. It more like a full feature Mater Tale than a sequel to the movie... plus it wasn't about racing at all but rather about oil wars.

Very disappointing. My husband made a good point, he said it was as if it was aimed to the 8 year old who watched the original 5 years ago and are now 13 years old. Certainly NOT aimed at young kids. If your kids are very young and you do not approve of violence, beatings, killings and guns DO NOT TAKE THEM. I wish someone had warned us, we wouldn't have gone.

I can't fathom what Pixar was thinking! I am now dreading Monsters INC 2... it will most certainly be ... I don't know... full of blood and guts? That seems to be their next step...

Fast Five
(2011)

I was going to keep my husband company but WOW!!
I am not a "fast cars - cute guys" girl at all so when my husband said he wanted to see this, I only went along to keep him company (and to twist his arm into coming to see a chick flick in the future with me!!).

I really, really enjoyed "Fast Five". The movie was packed with action from start to finish... I had only seen the first film previous to this so there was a connection with the characters which are very likable, and by now if you have see the previous movies, very likable.

I was excited to see Dwayne Johnson (the Rock) can actually ACT!!! :) I liked it so much, I am pulling the previous movie out of the shelf tonight to watch.

One thing I will say is: Stay and watch ALL the credits. You do not want to miss what comes by the time the last of them roll by... We didn't know but thankfully we were just going down the steps when it happened and now we are very excited... at least half of the audience had gone and missed it!

Thor
(2011)

An(nother) American Twist of someone's mythology...
I went to see Thor without having read a single critic or even seen a trailer. I went in expecting to see a boring movie but I came out having really enjoyed myself... but then again I am not Norwegian! If you have a very basic knowledge of Scandinavian mythology, then you will probably miss all the twisted parts of the mythology here and you will just enjoy a very enjoyable film for what it is... nicely fast paced, visually impressive and enjoyable.

I suppose I feel about this film like I felt about Percy Jackson... I couldn't enjoy the film because as a Greek I was SO annoyed by all the inaccuracies and twists of a mythology I grew up with and know well. I guess the Norwegian feel the same way...

I gave it a ten because I really liked it! It had everything, action, adventure, romance and a good pinch of comedy, we all laughed quite a few times.

** Here come the spoilers ** Thor, the son of Odin lives with his brother Loki in Asgard and he is to succeed his father to the throne. He is brave but a bit of a hot head so when their biggest enemy, the Frost Giants, find a way into Asgard on his big day, he of course wants to go after them. Odin forbids it but he goes off anyway which earns his banishment...into 2011 Earth!! Stripped of his powers and his beloved Mjolnir, his hammer of the Gods, he must grow as a person first, put others before himself and prove himself if he is ever to be a god again and be allowed to return to Asgard and the throne.

There he meets the sweet and slightly awkward astrophysicist Jane (Portman) and we have quite a few funny scenes and quite a bit of sparks flying off between them. When S.H.I.E.L.D (remember then from Iron Man?) find out about the Mjolnir which is in the desert of New Mexico and nobody can lift it, they take over ... and the fun begins..

Nice story with quite a few twists, likable characters (even if a bit one-dimensional but this is a fantasy fast paced adventure, so we don't care much!), lovely visual effects and big names delivering as expected... and not really too scary even for 10 year olds!!

Hanna
(2011)

A disjointed, weird, fairy-tale!
I went into the theater excepting to see a spy/action movie with a 16 year old girl as the spy/assassin. I came out thinking "I should have seen the other film".

Hanna starts off promising but ends up being silly, with no rhyme, no story, no purpose. Instead it turns into a maddening dash at times and drift off to sleep boring at others... I liked Blanchett's performance but Bana (one of my favorite actors) was...so and so...kind of out of his water it seemed. Ronan was good in her part, except she didn't match her character in what she was supposed to be... a genetic super-human. She looked, as another commenter pointed out, anorexic. Surely someone so well trained and so powerful should have a better physique (??). A lot of close-ups of her beautiful eyes, a lot of concentration on her face and villains who are unconvincing and badly played... a lot of things that don't really make sense and leave big holes in the story...

If you are going for the action scenes you will be disappointed, you don't really see her fight, the scenes are so disjointed you get glimpses really but no real action sequence. A lot of things are implied.

It's more of a gory coming of age film rather than a spy/action movie...and there is really no twist at the end either, it is all explained during the film. The ending is unremarkable... she gets her target, everyone else dies and we never learn what became of Hanna... the end.

Mars Needs Moms
(2011)

Good effects, lousy in every other department
I am the mom of twin 5 1/2 year old boys. I LOVE cartoons and I haven't missed one (of the good ones) in years. My husband? Not-so-much a fan but with twins you do need two pairs of hands in a movie they're... so I told him "But it's Disney!!! It's going to be fantastic!!!" Yeah... not so much.

The animation was good except the little boy, didn't quite look like a little boy. There was something "off" about him. Same as with the Polar Express (same FX company). They just can't seem to get little kids looking like little kids (??)

Texture and motion were spot on, very good rendering and believable. The story... left me with a lot of questions. I did not feel for the characters. I didn't bond with them. Milo was a little spoiled brat and my boys called him a "Bad boy". The pace of the film was too fast and you got from one point to the next without being able to grasp what was going on. The only likable character was Gribble and at the same time, he was the only one we got some background info on.

I guess what this movie was lacking was soul as many reviewers said. It WAS like a "by the numbers movie". Are the days of movies like "Monsters INC" and "Mulan" or "Lion King", or even "Toy Story" gone??

This past year I have liked Despicable Me and Megamind MUCH MUCH better because these movies did indeed have soul... My boys thought the movie was indifferent and even asked me to go home a couple times even though we even watched it in 3D. They were scared a few times and got overly anxious too... why on Earth would a movie aimed for kids be scary to them? Was it necessary? We didn't get a single reaction like these when we watched Megamind or Despicable Me, so why would Disney think this kind of violence was necessary??

Plus I really disliked the innuendo of "if you are a good boy and do as your mom tells you, the Martian will see this and take her away". SERIOUSLY??? Because that's Gribble tells Milo... that he was a good boy and always did as he was told and as a "reward" his mom was taken and killed... And it didn't go unnoticed by the boys either. At the end of the film they both commented how they couldn't obey because the Martians would take me!

There is no way I am buying this movie for them when it comes out on BD!! There is no way they are watching this piece of junk again. Disney, WAKE UP!!!

Gnomeo & Juliet
(2011)

My boys LOVED it!!!
I took my twins (age 5) to see this today and they were THRILLED to bits!! I disagree with the reviewer that says it's a "girls'" movie! My Hot Wheels/Bionicle loving sons, loved it and they didn't think it was girly one bit and neither did I!

I also did not think it was a Toy Story rip off as there have been a ton of movies featuring toys that come alive long before Toy Story anyway. Yes, garden gnomes and decorations come to life but that's were the similarity between the two ends.

I did not go in expecting to see a cartoon version of Romeo and Juliet so I was not disappointed one bit and thankfully, this story does not share the tragic end of the original tale. I did like the characters quite a bit, I LOVED how the gnomes were fragile, I loved the clay clinging sounds they made, how realistic the textures were.. it did not feel like a "dime a dozen" animation at all!! It was bright, it had a solid plot, and it was going somewhere (unlike let's say, Alpha and Omega or Happy Feet).

My boys were begging as soon as the titles rolled to watch it again so we just might be returning to the movie theater with some friends this weekend. I wouldn't mind seeing it myself and I was glad we did go see it because after I read the previous review, I had my doubts if it was going to be any good but it was!!! My boys "got it" much better than say, Shrek... so it will appeal to a younger crowd as well in my opinion...

Inception
(2010)

Mind blowing (and boggling)!
There are many reasons why I liked "Inception". First of all the cast of actors was brilliant! I've always liked DiCaprio as an actor and always thought he was a damn great one! He just proves it again in this film. I can't say enough about Ellen Page either... I am still amazed of the depth of her performance mostly because you are fooled by her baby-ish appearance!

I think it has all been said in the reviews prior to mine. The film is original and this is its greatest asset, especially since, by now, we have "seen it all". It is really difficult to see a truly original idea these days.

My only objection comes from the "extreme" use of guns and explosions. I loved the way the film twisted my brain but I thought the film didn't really need ALL that "firepower" to impress me. It's like the script was written and then someone said "It's great but if we want to really make our money, let's add some car chase and a bunch of spectacular explosions... Yeah, explosions... films with explosions always sell"

I argued with my husband that I understand the need for the existense of some sort of villain within the Dream (the Projections). Otherwise there would be no urgency, no ticking clock, no need for hurrying it up... I just thought especially when they reached the 3rd level of the Dream (Snow) it was a little "too" much. I got a little tired with all the action scenes and I so did my husband and the rest of the males in our group (so no, it wasn't just us women lol).

A collective yelp rose from the audience when the last scene rolled by. As the spinning Jack wobbles and we expect it to fall (or not fall), the scene goes black and the audience is left wondering. Personally, following my train of logic, I think Cobb never did wake up...

I really enjoyed this film... I recommend it whole-heartedly!

The Expendables
(2010)

Blood, death and good laughs - Brilliant!!
Before you read this you should know I am a 30 something mom of two who is not so much into movies filled with explosions and I certainly do not like beat'em up movies either... BUT... I REALLY loved "The Expendables"!!!

The actual script is nothing new or innovative... a group of mercenaries hired for a job. I could even call it predictable... No, this movie is not based on it's scenario so much as it is carried on by the chemistry of its protagonists.

Stallone and Statham are a killer duo. The rapport between them is excellent!! The action scenes are kinda blown out of proportion but that's the charm!! You know what you are seeing is un-doable but you still fall for it and go "wow" nevertheless with a silly smile upon your face. It's just so... entertaining.

There isn't a dull moment in the film, the pace is fast, the cinematography fantastic. There is a *lot* of blood but it is done very artfully, not concentrating on the gore at all. They don't need to; the movie is carried along beautifully without having to "wow" you with blood... there is a lot of it but it's not what you are noticing. You are listening to the dialogue between the characters, or how Statham works his knives or Stallone re-loads his guns... in reality there is blood in most scenes but it's only a flash of it, the actors carry the weight of the film, not the special effects!!

The first thing I told my husband as the final credits rolled by was "I need this in Blu Ray!" I really wish there is a sequel to this... it was an action movie *so well done*... Possibly the best movie I've seen all year!!! Bravo Stallone, bravo!!!

Persons Unknown
(2010)

Only watch it if...
I can picture it in my head: The creator of the show saying something like "I've got this great idea for a show!! Six people get kidnapped and thrown into a deserted town in the middle of nowhere and they have no clue who did it and why..." And the other guy asks "Then what?" and the creator shrugs and says "we'll make it up as we go along! Hey, it worked for Lost!"

I seriously cannot stand another show like Lost. I liked Lost a lot for its actors, the location but man seriously, enough with the out-there-half-explanations! I want some either totally imaginary like Sci-Fi or something real. This show keeps leaving lose ends after each episode...can't stand that!

Only watch this show if you like bad acting (none of the actors are even decent or well known) and don't expect any answers at all. I've watched all episodes and I have no care for any of the characters, I am very confused and I don't care if the show never airs again.

Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief
(2010)

Enjoyable and frustrating at the same time!
I want to begin by saying I am Greek and the movie just opened in Greece two days ago. So there are two parts of me writing this review... One if the logical part that reviews the film as a film... the other is me as a Greek.

As a film, it was enjoyable. Maybe it would have been more so if I was 15 or so (I am over 30 ;)), the teenagers in the theater were VERY happy and clapped in excitement very often. The CGI was not perfect, you could tell it was CGI, kind of like you could tell in Xena or Hercules, kind of low(er) budget but definitely OK and presentable. So all in all an enjoyable film but nothing I would buy on DVD or would watch again...

Now, what I didn't like was the butchering of our mythology. How would the Americans feel if the Greeks made a big production about the Civil War and brought over to Greece/changed it how they liked? There were many snorts of disapproval in the theater (especially from the older in the audience).. Hades in Hollywood... Mount Olympus in the Empire State Building! Like? SERIOUSLY!? It felt like mockery...(and Rosario Dawson speaking a few phrases in Greek... it was Hilarious ha!)

All in all an enjoyable film, not wasted money but even a little insulting if you are Greek...

By the end, you'll be playing for the blue side!
I won't state the obvious, you've read it in all the other comments; this is an amazing visual film!! You simply *cannot* tell this is CGI!! You cannot! Of course to be honest, the fact that this is an alien world with nothing to compare it with, helps Cameron and I have a suspicion that if they were trying to re-create Earth and human actors, the end result wouldn't be so believable. But nevertheless, Cameron actually *brings* you into Pandora and you will simply fall in love with this world and it's natives, the Na'vi.

Lots of commenters have said that the story/plot was stale and old. Yes, the plot has been done before... the foreigner (human in this case) falls in love with the native ... Pocahontas anyone? But in the end... so what!? Seriously, how many stories *haven't* been told? What exactly would you consider original? This is the post-modern age... we've seen it all; the romance, the gory, the idiotic and now movie makers are focusing on scaring us by not showing anything... playing with our psyche because our *eyes* have seen it all. Except Pandora... you haven't seen anything like that. I loved the story... yes it was Pocahontas all over again in another setting but so what? I think the simple story worked for this film. I really left the viewing with a smile on my face. I didn't have to ponder over difficult questions and I could focus on the visual Heaven Cameron created. Not that this film is without it's moral lessons... I was kind of ashamed I am human and really wanted to turn blue.. at the end I was playing for the blue side and so will you... If this is the future of cinema, well I can't wait for what comes next... because I tell you, everything else after this, kinda feels stale!

Huh?
Huh! That's what I am about to say about this film... that's what it left me asking. What just happened here?? So it's this guy who is single, 28, totally boring and wants to adopt a Chinese baby... first of all, it is not realistic at all. The guy who wrote, clearly, hasn't read anything about how Chinese adoptions work which for those of us who are actually trying to do just that, it is insulting to say the least. "I made the list" he proclaims and he will travel to Hong Kong (!? seriously!?) to the baby who he refers to as "it" throughout the film. There is no referral, nothing about this situation is realistic! The writer "imagines" how it is like and he has a go at it without any research at all on the subject. Then the guy gets handed a one year old out the blue and wham, he is a dad. Lots of gaps there, half the characters are not even developed, there is this weird hobo guy who shoots and beats up the star but then it turns out it was an imaginary character (then who the heck shot him and you are even showing the bullet which the star pulls out of his leg on his own!! seriously?!)

Boring film that didn't really make any sense at all. Asner and Goodman were the only good performances. This film simply does make any sense! There is no beginning no middle and no end, no explanations... and Dalon is like a statue.. he is not acting... he has no facial expressions!!! No emotion, no nothing!! Even his speech pattern is slow and boring... Don't waste your time and money on this... go see a real film!

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
(2009)

Boring!!!! And nothing like the book!!
I suppose most of my friends over here have said it already: this film has NOTHING to do with the book so I won't elaborate on that. What I will say is, it is BORING... in fact it has no point and the few points it makes, can be done in a matter of an hour. The film is over two hours long and it's filled with nothing but stupid jokes and very little actual facts. It also leaves a lot of questions that could only be explained if you have read the book and you know i.e. who is who and how they got together. Otherwise you are clueless and it feels like a bunch of scenes thrown together for ... no reason at all. The worst of all the films for sure... :(
