Starkeisha
(2022)

Beautiful, lovely, simple and to the point.
Imagine Lovecraft Country and Black Panther had a baby. That baby would be named Starkeisha! Damn I love us! Now wake up and go live / love you! Thank you.

Jean of the Joneses
(2016)

Very good film. Funny, classy and not trashy.
My wife and I came across this looking for something new to see and we were pleasantly surprised. I would describe this as a modern, slightly dark and dry humor film which combines the elements of a classic Woody Allen film as seen through the eyes of a middle to upper class African American / Jamaican / Caribbean family delivered in an style likened to that of the film, The Royal Tenenbaums (another personal favorite). You could even compare it in style to "The Meyerowitz Stories" a film "Jean" predates by a year. The film has a good script and a great flow and it never gets dull. The cinematography is wonderful, plus you get New York City as a backdrop. This kind of film might not fit everyone's style or taste, but it's definitely worth the try.

Really Love
(2020)

Really Love should be called Is This Really Love
I wanted to "Really Love" so many things about this film. The cast was perfectly picked. The cinematography is outstanding. It's extremely wonderful to see young Black people in such a positive light. Unfortunately the script isn't strong enough with all of the good previously stated. Honestly the story never really developed the love between the two leads. It's not so much because the relationship was rushed as in because there was no real dialogue between the leads. So as the "relationship" progresses and then falls apart you're left wondering not "Really Love" but more like "Is This Really Love?" Also way too many similarities to Love Jones. Unfortunately this film lacks the substance and storytelling that made Love Jones that film we will love always.

The United States vs. Billie Holiday
(2021)

All it took was 30 minutes to be disgusted.
Disjointed. No continuity. Not feeling this script at all. Sad.

Drunk Parents
(2019)

Horrible
Two great actors in Baldwin and Hayek. That's it. Where the hell is this movie going? Plot makes no sense and the script is crap. Gave up after 30 minutes and should have quit earlier.

V-Wars
(2019)

Pathetic and poor
This show could best be described as taking a unique approach to a vampire story and completely trashing it with horrible writing, stupid sub plots, boring acting and a boat load of dumb cliches. As a movie I could deal with it the weaknesses. As a tv series, the long drawn out and dumb storylines are far too painful to sit through.

Blood & Water
(2020)

Cape Town 90210
This show has good potential but overall I find it somewhat disappointing. It's potential lies in its cast. Each person is cast perfectly. Each actor delivers their character's story brilliantly. It's also a beautifully filmed series with some great cinematography. There are wonderful moments in this show and the storyline is a great idea. My disappointment is in the execution. Too many times the script has far too much overly dramatic flair. The show can become too soap opera with many dumb decisions and actions especially by the main character. There is a lot of unnecessary fluff which really drags the series from the main story and therefore prolongs the eventual outcome. Because of all these unnecessary diversions, the simple story of a girl seeking the truth about her abducted sister has been transformed into a South African Beverly Hills 90210. Overall, this show should have been only one season but instead there will be more. Sadly after viewing all of the soap opera antics, who knows how the original storyline of a child abduction will, when our even ever come to a conclusion.

Love Dot Com: The Social Experiment
(2019)

Disappointing....
My wife and I really liked the idea for this film and the cast but the execution was simply disappointing. The slow pace, due to bad writing and a film needing more cut out, really hurts the movie. Also the film is supposed to be based on the idea of online dating, yet it takes forever for the leads to get to that point and how it's done will honestly have you saying, really though? The saving grace of this film is the cast. We enjoyed pretty much all of the characters. The two leads were great. We really liked the male lead's character. We really liked the female lead's character early on, but eventually she is given flaws that come out and you lose any sympathy for her. Once the online dating actually begins, this movie falls apart, slows to a crawl and trudges to its finale which is one of the oddest endings ever. The finale will leave you saying WTF. I love seeing Black Love on film and in a more positive light, but this film really misses the mark.

Snowpiercer
(2013)

No. No. No.
It was actually funny watching just how horrible this film is. Look at all the well explained plot failures already posted for me. I agree wholeheartedly. Lastly, Inuit Parkas. I guess they're just lying around and in all sizes. There are several people who will never be able to recommend any film to again. SMDH!

Sherman's Showcase
(2019)

Trifling Hot Garbage best describes this show.
Who in the hell thought this crap attempt at a "satire" of Soul Train would be funny? I was done after 10 minutes. I will give it 1 star for the quality of the video....that's it.

Almost Christmas
(2016)

Watch it once & never again.
This movie is unfortunate giving all of the acting talent present. It's another film centered around a typical dysfunctional family that is dealing with the recent passing of its matriarch at the first family Christmas since her passing. Of course all of the trivial and not well thought out issues are resolved by the end. There are those heart string tugging moments and excellent music choices that will bring back some good memories, but don't let that fool you into thinking this is a quality film. Bottom line, watch it once and then go get your favorite Christmas films that you love to watch every year. For something similar and far superior watch "This Christmas" because that is more real if you know what I mean.

Wine Country
(2019)

Pathetic
Complete waste of talent. This film is a disjointed collection of scenes and storylines that don't build into anything and honestly have no original thought. Humor is at a minimum so be warned.

Rocko's Modern Life: Static Cling
(2019)

Extremely disappointing.
If you are a true fan of the incredible wit and humor that Rocko's Modern Life gave us, then skip this because this is gut wrenching. I only made it 16 minutes into it and had to stop. Netflix should just get the original series and stream that. Thank goodness I transferred all my "VHS" recordings of the show to digital because that is the only Rocko worth watching. Just turn the page and wash your hands.

Dead to Me
(2019)

Great start, horrible finish
The show had a great start and the twists and turns were fun until it was apparent the eventual truth would have to come to light. For me the last three episodes became increasingly painful to watch and the finale was pathetic. The resolution in the finale was visible from a mile away and it was the easiest way out to continue this show. On a good note, I enjoyed the acting and Christina Applegate should easily win an Emmy for her performance. Every second of her on the screen was powerful. Unfortunately for me I cannot watch the second season with the storyline built around a lame finale summation.

The Boys
(2019)

Excellent
This is simply great television. Do not be put off thinking it's just another super hero TV show. It's much more than that. Writing is amazing. Excellent choices of actors for all of the characters. The finale was so superb and I cannot wait for season 2.

Modern Family: Commencement
(2019)
Episode 21, Season 10

Simply a bad episode.....
This is probably the dumbest episode for Modern Family to ever air. Everything was forced and just over the top. Every joke was painful to watch than the previous and watching the characters just look stupid was annoying. The show is getting worn out and showing age but this season hasn't been that bad until this episode.

Ways of the Flesh
(2006)

Watch if you want to, but I would rather watch paint dry
Watched 20 minutes of this last night and stopped. My wife and I both agreed that nothing could save this film so why continue with the torture of watching. I understood the plot but the way they went about it was brutal. The transitions between scenes were horrible. It seemed to jump from one scene to another without any connection. Wood Harris was not the best actor to be cast in his part. I saw nothing positive out of this film to keep my interest. I love Zoe Saldana, but this will be just a tiny bump on her career. I feel for those who went to see it and had to sit there and suffer. I'm glad it was on Showtime so I simply just changed the channel.

I have seen many reviewers like this film because it avoids the typical stereotypes and negative images that some films, built around a Black cast, tend to lean on. I say look at "Love Jones", "Love and Basketball", "The Best Man" and "Brown Sugar" as films that gave us a well rounded script which is built on all aspects of Black culture. If you are looking for the Indie style of film with a Black cast, I have enjoyed "Hav Plenty" and "I'm Through with White Girls." I've seen flaws with these films also but I would recommend them. As for "The Heart Specialist", I love seeing our people on the big screen, but I personally cannot recommend this film to anyone.
