Speak No Evil
(2022)

A great horror arises
Amidst oceans of bland horror movies where groups of teens get massacred without you actually caring for them, sometimes a movie arises that truly understands the horror genre.

You don't need to kill 10 people to have a horror movie. It's all about creating a setting, the music, the character development and the ability to bring this constant nagging feeling that you have as a viewer.

Speak No Evil does just that in the most brilliant fashion. It starts slowly by creating these awkward social tensions and continues from there. I was literally hooked from beginning to end.

Most negative reviews talk about 'dumb decisions', but I only see one perhaps and that is because one of the main characters made a thoughtful decision of not having his daughters heart broken in order to avoid a weird and painful social interaction. It's not until later in the movie that we are allowed to truly see the hosts nature. Accusing the characters of making bad decisions is acknowledging the fact that you don't understand what is going on in my humble opinion.

Fantastic movie but with a disturbing ending. Don't watch if you are a sensitive person.

The Idol
(2023)

American double standards
The Idol is about a young superstar that is having a breakdown after her mother's death. Also, as she's a young virgin, she is at the same time experimenting with her sexuality. Perhaps hooking up with Tedros is both what she's looking for. Self destruction (like her cutting) while also sexually experimenting.

The show draws a lot of content from well known female artists. Britney Spears for one but also lots of other big female stars that like to show off their body. Miley Cyrus anyone? Nicki Minaj? Cardi B? Katy Perry? Madonna? Sexuality is what most female artists use to sell their music. Nothing new.

It's obvious that the divided states of America have never been so prude as in this day and age. They see a girl in a bikini and it's blasphemy. At the same time every 15yo owns a rifle. Biggest pornography-producing country? Also US, by a WIDE margin. All you hear nowadays is 'left-winged', 'right-winged' and 'woke'.

Seeing all the '1'-star votes, I know enough. It's nothing but a reckoning. They didn't see the show. They hate nudity.

Enough on the double US standards.

I like to say next that Lily-Rose Depp does an excellent job playing the role she's given. Ignore the haters. It's people that are uncomfortable seeing a naked human body that say she cannot act. A body shaped by God and brought to this world without clothes on. Ridiculous.

What is however correct is that the show is too thin narrative-wise. At least in this first few episodes. What is there is good and at times very witty, but I expect more storylines from an HBO series.

All in all a show with potential but the writers need to up their game and bring more to the table.

The Dead Don't Die
(2019)

Non-existing script that attracted Hollywoods finest
Even if you have zero interest in watching yet another zombie movie in 2023, you probably could not skip this title as it managed to attract a bunch of big actors.

I mean, who doesn't want to see stars like Bill Murray, Steve Buscemi or Danny Glover shine as they did more than a decade ago?!

Unfortunately, the script is close to non-existing. It only knows how it wants to end (and even that is not particularly good). All the rest feels like meaningless filler content.

It tries to mimick the slowness and narrow mindedness of small-town inhabitants like many films try to depict, reminding me a lot of Fargo. One way it tries to do this it by letting all actors talk slow with little intonation. A side-effect is that the movie feels like it has no dynamic at all. Even when they're about to die they state stupid lines without any tone in their voice like 'Well, this is it then'.

It fails to entertain for the whole runtime, really.

Devotion
(2022)

NOT a war movie
I started watching because I thought it would be a cool war movie. The IMDB short summary literally states "A pair of U. S. Navy fighter pilots risk their lives during the Korean War and become some of the Navy's most celebrated wingmen.".

This is actually the worst summary I have ever read and I would guess that the person who wrote it did not see the movie.

The real story is not so much about the war. It's all about race, racism and being accepted for who you are. It's loosely based on the true story of Jesse LeRoy Brow, the first African-American aviator who completed the US Navy basic flight training program.

I wasn't really in the mood for yet another movie about race really. It has all the components we've all been slapped in the face with a number of times before. Black man orders a drink, he doesn't get any. Black man tries to get into party, he gets the stink-eye and a big fat rejection. Black man tells numerous stories about white people trying to see him fail or get him killed.

I mean, yes it's part of the story and it's probably literally how things were for this man but the problem is that I'm quite tired of the 'make white men guilty'-genre. It really has past the point where I feel entertained. I have watched over 20 racial-issue movies and this one is unfortunately the one too many.

Next to that, the movie is also EXTREMELY predictable.

I knew beforehand that someone would die trying to land a plane on the carrier deck.

And when they arrived at the bar after going to the casino I thought to myself 'so this is where they will have a bar fight scene' and boy oh boy, what followed was a bar fight scene! Can you imagine?

On a positive note, Jonathan Majors' acting was very good and the war scenes did look cool at times.

It's not a bad movie perse. I admit I have my personal issues with it and my score is reflecting that. But given those issues, I would argue that a 6 is still a generous score for a mediocre movie.

Antichrist
(2009)

Chaos is this movie
If you've ever watched a Von Trier movie then you probably know what you're up against. I've watched many of them and, well.. I don't think any of them will ever make it into my top lists.

This entry however, Antichrist, does an even better job at boring me with meaningless shots and babble. It goes on and on without any feeling of progress.

Granted, Charlotte Gainsbourg does an amazing job and for that she got the best actrice award in both Cannes and at the European film awards, but that is all what I can say positive about this film.

Von Trier still is a buzzing name in the film industry, but I'm beginning to think this is only thanks to the fact that he likes to show explicit sex scenes and dead children. People talk about him and his movies. But with so many actual good movies out there, I would strongly suggest skipping this one. And while you're at it, perhaps even skip all the Von Trier movies. I promise you won't miss that much.

Skate Kitchen
(2018)

Girls on wheels
I'm a nearly 40yo male movie fanatic that cannot leave a movie unfinished and I realize I'm totally not part of the target audience.

But... I've seen a couple of what I consider 'good' coming of age movies and this one just fell short in that category for me.

It's somewhere in the middle of a skating documentary and a coming of age movie. The skating part is ok but I had little interest in seeing that material. The coming of age part is... well.. lacking.

In 4 sentences; she has a minor fight with her mom and leaves the house. She spends time with her female posse who are all comfortable with the topics sex and drugs. She then spends time with the opposing male posse where she falls for one of the guys. The female posse is therefore upset and the guy she wanted to date blocks her advances so the goes for the last available option; return home to her mom.

Granted, you cannot judge a movie because you can summarize it in a couple of sentences, but I did not feel any connection with, or feel sympathy for any the characters. I can only conclude that I don't really care about this film because I did not feel any emotions watching it.

Funny Games
(2007)

But why...? Because Haneke can, I guess
It was high on my watch list because I did not have a clue about what the movie was about.

Now I watched it and I cannot say I am happy I did. The movie is, in a way, an experiment. It's pointless and hard to watch so why continue watching it? During the movie, the character Paul -played by Michael Pitt- gives us the impression that he knows we are watching him and that he does what he does because we also keep watching him.

Does the movie have a point? A Climax? Some hidden message, perhaps?

I'm not convinced.

It's a guilty pleasure for people that like to watch ultra-violant movies. But for the majority of us, it's best to actually participate in the experiment and just turn the movie off once you think you had enough. You're not missing out on anything.

Prey
(2022)

So average
Hollywood doing what it does best. Sequels of sequels without much story.

And if some other country would bring out a movie where the English language is as messed up as the French is in this movie, it would not get a 70+ rating. It was gibbrish with a couple of French words in between. I know Americans know little about the rest of the world, but this is an all-time low. Not that French is my primary language, but stuff like this a killing motion pictures as much as books filled with spelling mistakes. It's not professional.

Uncharted
(2022)

Failed execution
I played all Uncharted games but I was more interested in the movie as a standalone. I hardly remembered the stories of the games so I just wanted to see an enjoyable film. Unfortunately, it's not good.

First of, wahlberg is a terrible match for Sully. Not the looks or age persé, but I've perhaps seen too many movies where he's just not acting. He's Mark Wahlberg playing himself in a movie and in this one its no difference.

Second, there is no real character development. We know little about the characters so as a viewer, I did not really care for any of them.

Third, It's like watching Angels and Demons or any other movy that tries to connect historic fairy tails and modern adventurers. The only difference is that all those other movies were better.

John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum
(2019)

A failed experiment
I'm sure we can write many things about the action scenes displayed in John Wick 3: Parabellum, and many superlatives can be used on the topic. We all agree. But.

A movie is not good simply because it's packed with action scenes like this. Hollywood movie critics tend to disagree here, but I did not watch a very enjoyable movie. The story is extremely thin and it tends to go from fighting scene to fighting scene, hoping that the viewer will forget that it should be the story that makes or breaks a movie. And some people do forget. As for me, unfortunately, I was bored out of my head after a while, wondering if there was something I was missing. Or am I simply getting too old for action movies.

I'd say this movie makes a good experiment. Action over story. Yay or Nay.

Looking at the scores, unfortunately for me, it's a yay.

I'll resort to drama next time, where they still value the story, as for me it's one huge failed experiment.

The Outpost
(2019)

Old wine in... old bottles
If there is one genre that has more movies than zombie movies, it's gotta be American war movies.

And if someone would say to me that wars get funded by Hollywood because it gives them scripts and good reviews, I'd believe them. Because there is not a single US critic that would give a bad review to a movie that ends with pictures of fallen American soldiers.

While I am sane enough to give credit to all those men who bravely and honorably gave their lives because their bosses were incompetent and did not care for them, I do think that making a documentary would have been the better option.

Instead, they chose to make a 13-a-dozen action picture where the action does not stand out. To make matter worse, the character bonding was pretty bad. So bad in fact that, as people were starting to die, I did not really care. That is generally not what you want when you create a movie to honour fallen soldiers.

In the end I think the intention was good but the execution lacked.

As a movie fan living outside the US, I can say what others cannot; skip this title as it brings nothing new to the table. What you see will all be forgotten before you can say Otorhinolaryngologist.

Windfall
(2022)

Back to basics
As a film fanatic, it saddens me to see that people don't value great films anymore.

Its a slow burn that goes out with a bang and when the credits roll down your television set you keep thinking about it.

Don't watch if you value CGI over great movie making.

Reprisal
(2018)

Annoying at best
There are these type of movies where, as the story unfolds, it becomes more and more unbearable to keep watching it because of bad judgement calls. This, mixed with a story that makes little sense is what Hollywood calls a Reprisal.

Bruce Willis is a main selling point for this movie, but all he does is sit in his kitchen. He's also not really trying to make a good acting effort, perhaps because most of the interaction with him is uninteresting at best like a lousy scripted NPC. The final 2 minutes unfortunately don't justify his presence either.

Then we have the illness of the daughter, which adds 0.0 to the story. It's just there and a lot of scenes keep bringing this fact up. And in the final 10 minutes we learn that the main character kept a bit of the robbery money for himself because of the financial issues he has because of this. At least that's what I thought I heard. I it important enough for me to rewind the film so I know for certain? Is it in fact of any importance at all? Absolutely not. All it is, is an attempt to add extra content to a story that is paper-thin.

Pop quiz; What does a person do when his war hero dad needs expensive medical attention and you keep getting in people's faces how righteous it is that he gets all he needs because of what he has done for his country?

Apparently, kill hard working civilians. Because that's righteous too.

The White Tiger
(2021)

Utterly disgusted
It was a fairly OKish movie until the narrator voice commented "This driver had a skin disease called vitiligo which made him look like a clown. It made my stomach turn".

You know, my wife who is in her mid-30s has this skin disease and it's mentally extremely hard for her to watch the pigment fade from her skin, creating visible spots. I'm so so glad we did not sit together to watch this movie as I cannot imagine the extra pain this would have caused. I'm utterly disgusted Netflix puts a movie like this in its catalog!!!

Room
(2015)

Could have been a tearjerker but it failed to deliver
I'm fairly sure this will get a downvote because the story is about a young boy that grew up while being locked up and the acting performance of the kid is very good.

But I'm going to state the obvious... There is little story and what is there is very shallow.

You know the type of movie where you care deeply about it's characters, where the story unfolds and in the end there is this one emotional scene that is an incredible tearjerker? This is absolutely not that kind of movie.

It had zero emotional effect on me, other than the relief that I actually finished it. I can only conclude that the characters were not developed deep enough for me to actually care for them. The extremely shallow story did not help either.

Don't Look Up
(2021)

If something should have ended early it's this movie
I like long movies that have a slow pace where there is time for long, strong, dialogues. This movie is just that, except the dialogues are terrible.

They are so uninspiring, long, boring and in-your-face-I-try-to-be-funny that I felt dead inside after half an hour.

There literally is so much wasted talent in this movie it's rediculous. I don't really have anything good to mention so I will stop my rant early. Too bad the movie didn't end a bit early.

Kursk
(2018)

What is expected, but dragged
Yes, the story of the Kursk is worth telling. But I don't think a movie production was the best way to pay tribute to all men that lost their lives in the accident.

A documentary would have been better because not only you know beforehand how the story will unfold, the movie itself holds no real body other than things we already know. Sure we know Russia refused any outside help and sure we can already paint a mental picture of submarine crisis situations (das boot, anyone?) so why drag the story with a two hour long production when there is not very much else to tell other than grieving families ,dying sailors and stubborn Russians.

Harry and the Hendersons
(1987)

My favorite kid movie
Living as a kid in Belgium in the mid 80's, early 90's, I only learned about this film when it was shown on public television. My dad recorded it on VHS and by doing so, it became part of our 'movie collection'. I cannot count the number of times I watched it. I knew every scene by heart and watched it so often the tape got damaged from watching it.

To this date, I still remember large portions of the movie even though it's probably 20 years ago I was able to watch it.

Not sure how I would recieve the movie if I'd watch it for the first time at this day and age but all I can say is that it was a classic for many kids and families and it deserves a great score for that. Awesome 80's movie. Full stop.

The Kingdom
(2007)

Yawn
The movie lasts too long because it wants to create characters we actually care about. Unfortunately that plan failed so all that is left is an empty shell that drags on until the final 30 minutes because I can summarize the story in 4 sentences.

Those final 30minutes made the movie bearable but that's the most positive I can say about it.

Sabotage
(2014)

Not the Arnie movie I was hooing for
I'll be short. The story is bad and makes little sense.

The characters are all trash and not one is likeable. The clichés are all over the place and if you need one movie to be sure no women will ever join the police force again because it's one big pile of male sexism, it will surely be this one.

Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood
(2019)

Good acting bland movie
Before I watched the movie I already read some bad review so I took the time to delve a bit deeper on the subject of the movie. Tarantino depicts all things the 60 are famous for in an effort to bring it back alive. Hippies, Polanski & Tate, Charles Manson, Bruce Lee, Spaghetti westerns, The Great Escape, .. you name it. The story is actually paper thin but nonetheless interesting enough to keep things interesting.

The part about Rick going to Italy was a bit weird and uninteresting but nonetheless fits the story well. It was also weirdly edited into the movie, but it was classic Tarantino stuff... Hate it or love it.

After being soaked in 60s moods for 2 hours straight, Tarantino steps on the gas and does what he does best. Going out with a bang.

I don't compare movies so I won't tell you how well it matches to other Tarantino movies but it's a decent enough movie to give it a chance. The acting is great, the 60s vibe is spot on but it does miss some of the epic scenes we love Tarantino for.

Fear Street: 1666
(2021)

Not as bad as many suggest
Not as bad as many here suggest. The editing is still far better than the first movie and it ties together all movies nicely. The ending is also quite decent.

All in all not the best horror but it fits the trilogy nicely.

12 Strong
(2018)

Big nope
I don't understand the movie got funded. The script is but an excuse to make yet another 'turn off your brain'-action movie.

Short story; some US military dudes fight the taliban.

Long story; some US military dudes forge an alliance with a local afghan dude and together they fight the taliban.

For a movie that lasts 2 hours, I would expect a better script, at least some variation in scenes and a sense that I should give a sh** about the protagonists, which I definitely did not.

Spider-Man: Far from Home
(2019)

Marvel default
I remember now why I don't watch Marvel movies.

They are lack a good story and the meat of the movies is solely in the lame jokes and overly used CGI.

This one is matches all criteria.

Sniper: Ghost Shooter
(2016)

Boring, boring, boring
The script is but a simple excuse to go from the first encounter to the second encounter, to the third encounter, and so on. The fights are all boring. The same bad guys with the same weapons wearing the same sunglasses. The only different is they switched costumes in between.

They audience is also given some advice; If a child is acting suspicious, just put a bullet in it's head.

Don't waste your time watching this. It's a high budget B movie.
