My Best Friend's Exorcism
(2022)

No thanks
Grady Hendrix as an author offers almost nothing to the industry and readership. Nothing he writes is new or exciting, in fact, most of his work feels borrowed from pop culture but somehow manages to make it unlikeable instead of trendy-sprinkled with misogyny. That's a talent I guess.

My Best Friend's Exorcism doesn't start out slow and pickup, it's just a snore the entire time. The friends have no backstory and you really can't find it in yourself to care about them. Adaptions are usually pretty bad, but I wonder if GH insisted on adding his two-cents to this film... one of those authors who think they're so talented they can also be a film director type.

I often recommend trying a film out for yourself regardless of how bad the majority found it, but this film is one I can safely say you'd wish you didn't see. You'd be better off spending the 90 minutes watching "influencers" on YT, which would be far more entertaining... which is really, really sad.

Shock Docs: Demon in the White House
(2021)
Episode 7, Season 2

Better than recent episodes
The Lizzie Borden and Ed Gein episodes were big let downs but Demon in the White House and The Devil Made Me Do It are much better. Hopefully the narrator for "A Haunting" returns in future episodes.

Eli Roth Presents: A Ghost Ruined My Life
(2021)

Easily one of the better first-hand paranormal docu's
Impressed all around. This is easily up there with my favorites like A Haunting and Paranormal Survivor. The stories are told by real people, not actors. The dramatization's are creepy and well made. I hope we see a season 2 next spooky season?

Midnight Mass
(2021)

Masterpiece?
I can't decide yet, but this may be my new favorite horror drama. Maybe my first ever existential horror drama?

Terror in the Woods
(2017)

In the Top 10 of al Paranormal Shows
If you watch these shows, it is what it is. You either watch because you believe, or you watch because you're a skeptic and just enjoy a good ghost story.

I often fall into both categories. This series does right what other good shows do right... real and/or believable interviews. The dramatic scenes are always fake, but the interviewees will mean the difference between me watching 5 minutes or every episode.

Shock Docs: Alien Invasion: Hudson Valley
(2021)
Episode 5, Season 2

Not the typical quality I expect from ShockDocs
Started to get a little bizarre in the outside investigations. Would recommend sticking to actual documentaries rather than investigation style.

American Horror Stories
(2021)

Welp
Congratulations on, almost, ruining the AHS franchise. I'm done with AHStories and will hope that AHS new season returns to what we expected. I don't think I've ever witnessed such a dramatic fall from amazing to failure between these seasons.

Fear Street: 1978
(2021)

WATCH. THIS. NOW. HORROR FANS
I've never really been a big "camp slasher" horror fan, but I absolutely loved this!

The whole series based around witchcraft/occult themes, and adding in the various 70s/90s horror tropes, mixed with the kills and adult themes (compared to a more kid-friendly Stranger Things series). Checked all the boxes.

Compared to that AHS: 1984 monstrosity, this was perfect.

Fear Street: 1994
(2021)

Loved it!
I was honestly not expecting much, and at times it felt a little rushed on some scenes, but overall I thought it was fantastic and fun. Genuinely can't wait for Part 2!

Hell Fest
(2018)

Atmospheric Haunted Park Thrasher
It was well made and atmospheric, and probably better for a Halloween-time watch but every single scare was predictable. Probably would have done well in the 90s-early 2000s in the shadow of Scream.

I really enjoyed the main actress. First saw her on Channel Zero.

Chasing the Devil
(2014)

5 Stars for the last half
Otherwise, I would have given it a 4. If you can get through the dramatic, cliche acting of the first 45-60 minutes, the last 30 is fairly entertaining. Not great, but at least better than bad found footage films.

None of the twists were surprising. Plot was mediocre and only delved info surface level explainations.

Shock Docs
(2020)

Overall an 8. Ed Gein episode was a dud though
As soon as I saw the guy from the Saginaw haunting series I knew most of the non-documentary parts were going to be cheesy, and I was right. Wasn't really up to par with the show's preceding episodes, but I will always watch and wait for new ones!

The Dead Files
(2011)

Entertaining for what it is.
If you watch these shows then you know you have to take it all with a grain of salt. I like to think a very small percentage of these stories have something unexplainable, but it's still entertaining to watch (for me) because I like ghost stories in general, fake ones included, so that coupled with some of the verifiable history and people they talk about, it's entertaining.

My main issue with the show is, I don't think I've ever seen an episode where Amy and Steve did not match each other's evidence perfectly, and if they are ever off it's minimal. Seems like they'd evolve the stories sometimes and not make it so obvious. Maybe they know this too and don't care, lol.

Bates Motel
(2013)

Love love love. "Do you still like me?"
I started and stopped Bates Motel twice over two years before finally finishing a weeklong binge just now. Can't believe I waited to see this masterpiece.

I actually really enjoyed most of the subplots that some seem to not like. Season 4 and 5 felt different for obvious reasons to those who've watched, but they are nonetheless beautiful.

Los cronocrímenes
(2007)

Hoping it would be better
Timecrimes has been on my to watch list for awhile. After watching, I was disappointed. For being on so many must-watch time travel movies, it was pretty boring and offered little explanation, even for a time travel film.

Followed
(2018)

Decent
Little new here, but at least it isn't like other found footage films where you may go 15+ minutes without a single interesting thing happening.

Once the main setting comes into play, the ghouls n' ghosts are pretty frequent and weren't that bad.

Paranormal Nightshift
(2020)

Mostly good
The studio behind Nightshift also make a handful of other paranormal shows that I enjoy, and this one is mostly on par. (Paranormal Emergency, Haunted Hospitals, etc.)

The narrator's voice is way over-the-top and sounds more ridiculous than ominous, and the fake "Hallway Cams" aren't necessary. I can't tell if they think I believe it's real, therefore insulting the viewer's and my intelligence, or if it's just trying to create a narrative by showing you parts of the story.

Note: Unless you can find someone who has a narrative voice similar to Anthony Call in "A Haunting", I'd just do without that effect.

Believers
(2020)

Actors do nothing for this genre
Save actors for horror movies. Using them for true account retellings waters down the story for me. I'm not sure I've even finished an entire episode yet. As much as I enjoy the content, the way it's presented almost feels like an insult to the viewers intelligence.

The Vast of Night
(2019)

Beautiful production and screen play
I was really impressed by this film the entire time. Beautiful production quality and the shooting style and long scene shots really aid in the story development, at least for this genre. I loved how it felt like a long, eerie twilight zone episode. Hope to see more like this soon!

The Barn
(2016)

Fun Halloween-time Movie
I liked it and it's hard for me to enjoy a low budget horror that knows its low budget. The scenes, design, props, etc. are great for low budget and the retro nostalgia they try so hard to pull off was actually done pretty good. The halloween atmosphere throughout the entire film was 9/10. The only thing I didn't like was whoever did the audio for the film made their voices feel too overlaid, but I got use to it around the time the action started. The plot/story itself I was surprised to enjoy as well... it came full circle and actually explained why things were happening. Definitely a fun halloween-time movie.

Hex Hollow: Witchcraft and Murder in Pennsylvania
(2015)

Well made and interesting
Found the whole documentary interesting, and information from both sides presented. While I don't believe Nelson was truly involved in any way, more of a wrong place wrong time thing, the documentary does leave open the possibility that there's witchcraft going on in PA.

Channel Zero
(2016)

Creepy and somber
I guess I'm one of the few who loved it, though I've only seen Candle Cove (season one).

The atmosphere is gloomy and dark and has the feel of modern King adaptions such as Castle Rock and The Outsider. It leaves you with some questions, or maybe assumptions, but I feel most good films should. I like to be shown, not told. Most horror fans will enjoy this.

The Great
(2020)

It's not for everyone, but it was for me.
It's true that the film isn't historically accurate but they quite literally say that on the splash screen of every. single. episode. So people complaining about that either lack the intelligence to understand someone making a fictional story about real life people, wasn't done for the first time here, or they were just wanting this to be something it wasn't... like a historically accurate show with less comedy.

That's not this. It's vulgar and funny. I laughed many times and I rarely laugh at anything in tv. The series was very much in the shadow of Marie Antoinette (2006) but I enjoyed The Great more.

Elle Fanning played her role wonderfully, as she always does. At times I wanted some characters to die horribly, and later felt sad and sympathetic toward them.

The Great was a 2-day binge that I very much enjoyed and hope for a season two.

Hellier
(2019)

Enjoyable and Thought-provoking
There's going to be a number of poor reviews from people who expect a monster or demon to be hiding behind every door like the locations Zak Bagans "investigates," but this isn't that.

I found this much more enjoyable because it asks a lot of questions, and teases some answers, but shows you very little. That "little" may actually be "none" to others and I can understand that opinion as well.

The team's investigation ultimately didn't find much and left it open to what, if anything, is going on, BUT I really enjoyed how they admit this and offer their reasoning behind it... so no, they don't leave you high and dry.

If anything this documentary opens the door for some good conversations to be had about the curiosities of our world, and for that I will be watching season 2!

Polaroid
(2019)

Better than I thought it would be
This is a solid, modern horror film. Well shot and decent acting. I was expecting something cheesy with horrible actors, but was pleasantly surprised. Worth a watch if you're a horror fan!
