Woman in Gold
(2015)

Perfection
This movie is just flawless in any category; acting, cinematography, sound, locations, story flow. Helen Mirren is of course the star but everybody else involved were perfect also. Telling the young woman's life story, their hair-raising escape from Nazi occupation, and at the same time describing the red tape involved in trying to get back stolen family property by the Nazi's 50 years prior is just a stunning accomplishment. But, the icing on the cake, which they could have ignored, is how most of the population of Austria (and other European countries) colluded with the Nazi's.

This is such an incredible movie, it should be required screening in high schools, it should never be forgotten what happens when hate and prejudice team up with apathy. No graphic violence is required to get the message across - classy all the way.

Gone Girl
(2014)

Good "Law and Order" episode, uncreative ending
Great acting for everybody except Affleck, he seems wooden, without any humanity (is that the way the part was written in the book?). The plot holds your attention for the whole time, very engaging but somewhat contrived, some events just don't make sense. The biggest problem was the ending, very unsatisfying. It seems like the screenwriter just got tired and gave up.

This movie was like driving the lead car in major auto race, leading for the majority of laps, then running out of gas, coasting to a stop within sight of finish line and not having the guts to push the car over the line, just walk away. That's how I left the theater, very disappointed.

God's Not Dead
(2014)

Shockingly ignorant, intolerant, nonsensical
Great acting from Shane Harper (Josh) who plays a character that is the only saving grace to the movie. All the other characters are one-dimensional, unyielding in viewpoints, and there are a lot of different characters (some just left hanging). I expected and would like to have seen more discussion between Josh and professor in the classroom, which should have been the focus of the movie (probably took less than 20 minutes total), rather than side plots that had no bearing on the discussion, especially the sadistic ending. The movie fails to make any sense, but it looks good.

To me it uses the classic tired old cliché of the underdog vs. powerful authority figure- not unlike 'A Few Good Men' where the snot-nose junior lawyer (Tom Cruise) gets the powerful general to admit wrongdoing, not very believable. That was the weak part of that movie-same here.

These screenwriters haven't a clue what an 'atheist' is. They also haven't ever heard of Lee Strobel's excellent movie "The Case For A Creator"- that movie (more of a documentary but completely engrossing) makes some very good points and makes sense without pushing Christianity like it's a used car. Since "God is Not Dead" was made by a Christian filmmaker, this is probably to be expected- but I would be embarrassed to be associated with this effort.

So, if it's entertaining to see Christians pat each other on the back and put down other religions without any reasonable explanation- have faith- you'll love this movie. If you would like to see some intelligent discussion on religion- look elsewhere, don't waste time and money here.

August: Osage County
(2013)

Waste of time and money
Great acting, but no plot, no humor, no point of view except voyeurism. No characters relatable, likable, or even memorable. If you enjoy watching a family tear each other apart with profanity and gossip, with no purpose and no humility, this is great theater (it looks like a remake of 'Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf' on steroids-not a pleasant experience either). This may be more entertaining as a stage play, although I can't imagine an extra hour. These people are looking at 'dysfunctional' in the rear view mirror. Spoiler alert- there is no ending, just shame for all involved. They may call this 'black comedy', the movie trailer claims that it is 'hilarious'. I don't find death, cancer or juvenile idiotic behavior amusing or entertaining, I would like those 2 hours back
