The Lovely Upset Sadly, this is so far one of the worst movies I've seen in 2010, and I wanted it to one of the, if not THE, best. Peter Jackson is a very good filmmaker, but this $100 million debacle is just that - a mess.
The movie begins well, but about 20 minutes in, the movie starts to fall apart. Focus turns entirely too much toward the "Heavenly, effects-heavy world" and away from the much more interesting and dramatic "Marky Mark/family" world. It's as if Pete was thinking, "I've done this before in 'Heavenly Creatures' and 'Lord of the Rings.' Why don't I fill this movie with both of those worlds and people will go wild." Sorry Pete. You really "wowed" us with LOTR, but the effects in "Bones" looked like more like garbage AND you went way overboard with them. All of this aside, Mark Wahlberg and especially Stanley Tucci give really good performances. The lens use and sound design are impeccable, but that still doesn't heal the wounds.
I haven't read the novel, but my partner told me that they diverted quite a lot from it. Now I have to read it, and see just how Pete, Fran, and Phillipa managed to get what some call one of the best novels of the last decade wrong. I wanted to like "Bones" so much, but came away with a really "meh" feeling in my soul. Come on Pete, impress us again; oh, and please don't screw up "The Hobbit."
