Oh Naui Gwishinnim
(2015)

It's a classic
I've seen many, many dramas; many good, some bad, others just forgettable. There are those I consider great, as in classics. Dramas I've seen twice or more, and will probably watch yet again in the future. Which is saying something because these things are often like watching 16+ hour films.

Secret Garden, My Girlfriend is a Gumiho, Lovely Kim Sam Soon, Hello Agashi, Cunning Single Lady, Healer, My Love From Another Star...well there are a bunch, and this is no exception.

It's a bittersweet love story about moving on, letting go and overcoming obstacles. This drama nails the balance between humor, drama, thriller and the macabre. The acting, direction and writing are all top notch. The two actresses who star in the drama are stand outs - especially the main gal as she plays two completely different personalities flawlessly.

If you are a fan of Korean dramas, or are new to the genre, this one is a fantastic watch. Highly recommend this one!!!

5 Bags of popcorn and maybe like 4 Slices of pizza to enjoy while you watch
I was sick with the flu, stuck in bed, and was surfing around on line and

came across this show. I'm fan of Tim and Eric as well as Neil Hamburger.

I watched the 9 minute episode with a big, stupid smile on my face, then

I noticed that this was season 3 episode 10. I was like WTF - how many of

these stupid things did these guys make?! I went to S1E1 and - stuck in

bed feeling like sick, I proceeded to watch all of them, including

the Decker series, and specials. Such a simple concept, with intentional

amateurish looking production values had me in stitches all day. Greg

and Tim are hilarious foils for each other, their chemistry was

hilarious!

Great Job!

Decker
(2014)

Hilarious
Hilarious show with purposely amateurish writing, special effects and acting. Hilarious riff on ultra right wing sensibility and playful jabs at earnest D.I.Y. content creators. Made laugh and then want to start wring gags, grabbing some friends, a video camera, and Adobe Primer and After Effects and have some fun. Despite it's utter nonsensical nature and cheap looking production values, it's obvious a lot of passion and effort went into creating this series. If you enjoy this then I highly recommend it's parent show, on cinema at the cinema. Tim and Greg play film reviewers who often bicker over petty issues. It's a film review show that not only lampoons film review shows but also has actual story lines that segue into the Deckerverse.

Portlandia
(2011)

Painfully dull and unfunny
One of those safe shows you hear everyone raving about. I gave this several chances, as I wondered what I was missing. All of the gags are DOA, I've never once even smirked at this safe pablum. I think the popularity of this God awful show is that everything safe, and all the humor, if you can call it that, is aimed at millennials. The jokes are based on observational humor specifically hipster culture in portland, which is just hipster culture. The problem is that all all the gags are nerfed, there isn't a single biting, or sharp observation in this show. Every single "jab" at these hipster conventions is gentle and designed for the hipsters to laugh at, because they are in on the joke. Also, all the targets are stereotypes so broad, this show needn't take place in Portland as all the jokes are totally generic, and run for far too long. This show feels like SNL - lame sketches that overstay their welcome. Jesus they did an ENTIRE episode about a bit where a lady didn't want to eat Tsukemen a certain way and the noodles came to life in a painfully tedious and unfunny episode length sketch that should have lasted 3 minutes at most. This show is just bizzzzaaaad.

Another Period
(2013)

Surprisingly Funny
This isn't the best show to come out in a while, but it is surprisingly funny. The gags are pretty hit or miss, but when they hit, they hit hard, and when they miss, it isn't too bad. In many ways this reminds me of Children's Hospital - in that they've taken a genre (Edith Wharton/Downton Abbey/Victorian) and totally lampooned it. There's plenty of absurdist WTF humor as well as send up's of victorian society as a whole.

If you like Portlandia, where every single joke is DOA and is just pure garbage, then I'd stay away from this. It's got some mean spirited humor which I personally find funny. Whereas Portlandia is all simple safe and tired over trod material and unfunny jokes that (much like SNL) go on for way too long. God I hate Portlandia.

My first K-Drama and the one that got me hooked
While perhaps this isn't the best K-Drama, this is a special one to me as it was my first. Trolling Netflicks one weekend I came across this, and thought, "Korean Television, heh whatever" but out of curiosity I started episode 1 and 16 hours later I was searching for my next Korean drama fix.

This is a pretty sappy and sentimental, and often very makjong - but it's fun. Seriously, there's some nutty stuff in here.

Basically an irresponsible young woman's parents die and she's left to take care of her siblings. She gets a job as a live in house keeper for a cold yet hunky lawyer. She hides her siblings in the home and as one might imagine wackiness ensues.

His younger brother moves in, and there's some weird intrigue about her parents past history. The show is filled with sentimentality, sometimes off the wall plot lines and of course the requisite love triangle. All in all, good fun on a slow weekend.

Another Hong Sisters winner
This is a fun k-drama penned by the Hong Sisters. For those who aren't familiar with their work, they're a pair of Korean television screen writers known for their quirky romantic comedies/adventure dramas. While yes many Korean Drama tropes appear in their work, the two seem to relish playing with conventions, and have fun with tropes rather than relying on them.

This is basically a Korean re-imagining of The 6th sense. Much like their wonderful re-imagining of the American film Overboard (entitled Fantasy Couple/or sometimes Couple or Trouble) - they take the basic premise and change everything making something nicely familiar but wholly new and surprising. This is no exception.

It's fun, sweet, and often extremely funny. In addition to the smart writing, the direction is top notch and the amazing cast constantly deliver. Highly recommend this one - and if ya like it, look up the Hong Sisters and seek out their work, all of it is great (except for their one misstep, the painfully bad remake of Big)

Damsels in Distress
(2011)

Not a movie for dumb people, it's droll in the best sense of the word
Fantastic little gem, and come back film from writer/director Whit Stillman. It's not as ambitious in scope as his previous films, but the writing is as sharp as ever, and all the actresses are phenomenal.

For the uninitiated, this a dialogue driven film. The humor is all deadpan and dry, not to mention quirky as hell. As always Stillman tackles very human issues within the confines of a very specific environment, with very specific characters, most people will never encounter. That's part of what makes his movies so special, that they can be so offbeat yet be anyone can relate to them, if they are open to it.

This is the kind of film that many people will either dismiss as boring, those in this camp I have no use for, or pretentious, those in this camp, I understand, but that's the appeal.

Give it a shot and let the dialogue wash over your, just don't expect a typical plot.

The Strain
(2014)

Great Little Popcorn Evening Show
I typically think the whole Vampire genre is old and boring (because it's been done done to death with no changes in the formula) but The Strain is pretty interesting and some great production value - very cool take on the genre. Worth a watch if you're looking for some cool monstery stuff it's a wonderful antithesis to the Twilight crap

The show isn't about zombies but has that ragtag group against insurmountable odds type of feel. It's very B horror and unlike TWD doesn't take it's self too seriously.

The acting is fine, the writing is usually good, keeping the plot clip'n along with a nice mix of action, character study, history etc. Not the greatest but at worst serviceable and often just right for the show.

If you're on the fence and enjoy shows of the horror genre definitely give it a shot. I was hooked from ep1 but I'm a complete sucker for these kinds of shows.

Also the direction and production values are top notch, and all of the actors are very likable and elevate the typical stereotypes to living, breathing people. Remionds me of (in a good way) : The Walking Dead, Falling Skies

Yeongeo wanjeonjeongbok
(2003)

A fun sweet movie that will leave you will a smile on your face!
The posted review is seems to be the only negative one. The film is sweet, fun, often funny, and well worth an afternoon's or evening's viewing. The movie is about a mousy public official who needs to take English in case any foreigners come into her office. There she meets the man of her dreams, unfortunately the guy is a cad and seems interested only in fancy girls. This is compounded by the fact that their English teacher is an attractive woman. This all leads to lots of wacky encounters, typical Korean misunderstandings, and love. The leads are sweet and play off each other very well. There's a sub plot about a daughter given up for adoption coming back to Korea to meet her family, and these subplots are often superfluous but it works well here. The lead actress is utterly goofy and adorable. The rest of the cast is great as well. All in all, a fun sweet movie that will leave you will a smile on your face!
