True Detective
(2014)

season four uses on average between 20 and 50 f-words per episode
Even the principals use them once or twice per paragraph.

It's excessive.

It's redundant.

It's offensive.

It doesn't add emphasis or texture to the scene, it is blatantly offensive.

Add the fact that it comes from law enforcement officers at virtually 100% of all of their interactions with members of the public as well as fellow officers leads me to believe that Alaska must be a terrible place to live and a terrible place to visit.

Perhaps this franchise has devolved into a terrible place to work at and/or write for.

I've heard of actors having the ability to change their lines.

And if so many actors have decided on their own to pepper their dialog with expletives, they must never want to work with producers of this series ever again.

Really the constant swearing is far far too much.

Also there might be a better than average chance that a producer, on his/her own, has decided to spice up the dialog for their own twisted reasons.

Poker Face
(2023)

shes so likeable
She brings back memories of another likeable detective

She could be the new Columbo.

Like Peter Falk, who had the support of many behind the scenes (I will assign my best man on the job) Now she has the support of FBI Simon from the Big Bang Theory (a good role for the former astronaut).

Although he was an L. A. based detective she should be nationwide, maybe even international, this actress brings us a very muted, unassuming and unpretentious aura to what ever situation she finds herself in. Please reduce the number of required characters to participate in a review of this show to below five hundred.

Nope
(2022)

unintelligible dialog - especially from Daniel Kaluuya
Makes little or no effort to fully and properly pronounce his words. If he had a stage career these problems would have been ironed out early. His monosyllabic responses are easy enough to understand, but for everything else, you need to rely on reading his subtitles.

However Keke is adorable and very entertaining to watch and listen to.

Note to the director: Don't watch your actors while you are shooting, listen to them.

The Lincoln Lawyer: He Rides Again
(2022)
Episode 1, Season 1

Man can these women talk
I paused the first episode just before the 12 minute mark and have realized that the leading character (a man) has spoken about 2 dozen words and the female characters so far have spoken about 500. Usually in rapid fired rants of more than 100 words per minute.

I am starting to get a headache already.

I hope this pattern wont continue for much longer.

Pieces of Her: Episode #1.1
(2022)
Episode 1, Season 1

Its got that "History of Violence" vibe going for it
First episode leads me to believe that our characters are not who they appear to be, very much like Cronenberg's film.

I am enjoying this.

Toni Collette is playing a Viggo like role but instead of a son we see Bella as a damsel in distress.

Very interesting.

Star Trek: Picard: Assimilation
(2022)
Episode 3, Season 2

weak dialog
Its like every character writes their own dialog, its pulling in every direction.

No one is looking to Picard for direction in this episode.

The show has lost its vision.

I have lowered my expectations for this show based on this episode.

Special effects has taken over from the writing in terms of capturing and holding my interest.

Maybe the special effects people should take a greater role in plot development too.

Those Who Wish Me Dead
(2021)

unsatisfying
Story concentrates on the aftermath of a criminal event - only the aftermath is dealt with

no explanation of the architects of the main event is given or their actions and motivations

too many holes lead to unsatisfying experience

the fire was not a necessary story element

very hap hazard production

might very well be one of those movies with too many people pulling the story in different directions.

Debris
(2021)

A new fresh visionary sci-fi show
Nice to see new themes and truly creative plots. Very reminiscent of the best of the x-files. A few suggestions: 1, a little less gun play please 2, also, please don't try to give CIA agents powers and abilities they don't warrant. 3, CIA are not law enforcement. The x-files people were careful to represent themselves as FBI

The Expanse: Hard Vacuum
(2021)
Episode 8, Season 5

Was she really trying to lift something incredibly heavy when there is zero G?
After all the previous content showing zero G on the space ships, need for magnetic boots etc... why was all this heavy lifting so stressful.

Should have been caught by some sort of a fact checker before going to air.

Not a lot of content this episode, it seems like it was stretched out a bit to fill the time.

The Midnight Sky
(2020)

A Horrible Mess
No structure, many pointless departures from the main narrative.

My condolences to anyone who gave George money to make this film.

Hopefully he used his own.

With all of the talented film makers that you have worked with George, apparently all of their experience, wisdom and guidance has disappeared into the ether.

George you should have someone you trust giving you advice and perhaps exercising a measure of control.

I wonder if there were some talented people involved in the production that took their names off this film when you decided to exercise control.

Your other directorial efforts were ok but this was a very large and complicated project, keep it simple George.

Force of Nature
(2020)

stupid piled on top of stupid
A-list actors doing stupid stuff in between stupid lines. Its like someone with script approval and re-write power, re-wrote the script just to sink the ship they were all on.

I can't think of a reason why the actors would agree to play these stupid characters and say these stupid lines and do these stupid stupid things.

Its an insult to an intelligent viewer to make a production like this.

Interesting fact: When you look at the directors career and over 20 years the viewers ratings of Michael Polish's film ratings are in a straight line down with the exception of a french film he made with Stana Katic in black&white in 2011.

The Great Silence
(2020)

un-enjoyable nonsense - not a single likable character
You must have at least one likable character going from scene to scene doing reasonably intelligent things

as previous reviewers have said - its not sci fi

I wasted almost an hour hoping it would improve but it didn't

I hope the film makers can learn that the audience needs to follow a character that behaves in a manner that we can support.

To say there are gaps in the plot is an understatement.

Warrior Nun
(2020)

Its hard to watch especially in regards to shotgun Mary
Shes a terrible character played by an unknown and most likely inexperienced young actress.

If she is playing the character way the director wants the role played... (i.e being miserable in every scene) she shouldn't be doing it.

She is hurting her career.

I cannot identify with an character introduces herself by holding a gun to the head of a doctor and threatens them with death if a member of their gang doesn't survive her injuries.

The fact that she is the second billed character makes it pretty bad.

A few minutes later she says more lines of dialog that are downright depressing, hateful and appear to be irrelevant venting. Its less that fifteen minutes into the pilot and I have already started fast forwarding through all of her scenes and dialog because they are miserable.

Its a shame the network didn't get more input from audiences before they made more episodes of her character the way she is.

I wrote this ten minutes into the pilot.

Dr. Fischer of Geneva
(1984)

Me Too! I saw it thirty years ago and want to see it again
Very unique view into Swiss society as I remember which is so seldom seen. It got the attention of James Mason at the height of his career, that says a lot.

It must be some sort of legal battle over rights I imagine.

A few films like this I have seen at the Toronto Film Festival and we were told that after its promised Toronto screenings it will never be seen again - that's my guess.

Its a punishment to the filmmakers because someone doesn't feel that their piece is large enough or a copy write issue perhaps - no fault of the film.

We are punished.

Charles I: Downfall of a King
(2019)

You must be more careful not to contradict yourself in the span of a few minutes
To tell you what the contradictions are would be a spoiler and I don't want to do that. Lets just say that at the 25:45 time mark on the 3rd episode I had to pause and write this comment.

I don't know if was a slip or the act of an editor that did not fully comprehend what was being said but here is a glaring contradiction about what the two principle characters thought of each other at a moment of crisis approaching the climax. I hope you will notice and fix this before additional airings.

Have someone really give this a careful going over - sometimes if you edit or proof your own work you make mistakes like this.

It was very captivating up to this point btw.

Spider in the Web
(2019)

Big plot holes
Mystery films have to be reasonable and understandable - this isn't.

Story leaps from place to place such that the audience is questioning what they might have missed and why the characters are behaving like they are. I suppose the problem lies mainly in the editing. The multitude of languages spoken only adds complication.

To complicated a project for this director and editor I presume.

Terminator: Dark Fate
(2019)

Atrocious Dialog
Unimaginably ridiculously stupid dialog, so much so that it must have been by design.

It's like the movie was based on a series of action sequences then handed over to a team of writers with instructions to fill it in with a plot and some dialog.

Your brain will hurt after watching and listening to this.

Fast forward through the stupid stuff to get through it quickly!

Its apparent that these very talented actresses have no influence on the lines they are saying.

I can picture a group of frustrated writers in a room, like a room full of comedy writers trying to find funny things to say one after the other, but in this case, they are trying to come up with a succession of ridiculous dialog to make us aware how unhappy they are at this process.

Jack Ryan: Cargo
(2019)
Episode 1, Season 2

dumbed down narrative to suit arrogant ignorant american 'base'
Plot items discussed in the season 2 pilot are filtered and accented toward an american centric world view; which I, and most people in this world do not perceive.

Dear Amazon, kindly identify content that makes everyone on earth seem less important than americans and flag it somehow.

The Kid
(2019)

unwatchable child abuse in first 2 minutes
You might get a stroke because you get so upset watching this

Blood & Treasure
(2019)

Truly a juvenile production (but with multiple casualties from automatic weapons)
I stopped to write this after 5 minutes in.

This show reflects an incredibly poor understanding of history that only a child would sit through. Add to this the fact that this show that can only be aimed at children, has automatic weapons fire and many people getting killed in the first five minutes of the pilot.

I wonder if network executives believe that every plot and line of dialog has to be dumbed down, and that prime time dramas have to begin with automatic gunfire and handfuls of people getting killed.

Is this what people, and parents in particular can expect for what might be the entire run of the show?

Mary's Kitchen Crush
(2019)

Adorable and knowledgeable Hostess - a delite to watch and listen to
In addition to her practiced experience and adorableness, it's a wonderfully photographed and edited series.

It shines.

Endlessly rewatchable, I've decided to preserve it as reference material.

Well done all.

Hanna
(2019)

no strong producer drive here
Flippant plot and character design, mind numbingly dull plot progression. Principal characters that follow highly predictable and ridiculously stupid progressions.

A good two hour movie stretched to a TV seasonal length with the insertions of "B*S*"

Yes I saw the movie. It was good, it was unique and original.

This is drawn out and exaggerated exorbitantly.

Aquaman
(2018)

Much better than I expected
As I was watching this I observed many elements of some of my favourite sci-fi films. Watch for elements that remind you of the Matrix, Tron, King Kong, The Phantom Menace and Attack of the Clones just to name a few.

Very strong supporting cast and Momoa carried the film very well. I went into this knowing nothing about Aquaman and the explanation of the backstory was well done and not overly long.

All in all a pleasant surprise.

Very very high production standards.

P.S. Amber Heard looks very good wet P.P.S so does Nicole Kidman

Deadly Class
(2018)

Pretentious characters, terrible writing, an abundance of unlikeable characters
Took a look at the creators' IMDB pages - no signs of previous success in TV. One dude came from the world of video games. Pilots should be all about creating empathy and character backgrounds. Too many characters I had to fast forward pass to get to the end of the first episode.

All I can say is it has nowhere to go but up.

High production values, large budgets, talented people behind the scenes but little talent in the areas of character design and plot and dialog.

Talented actors aren't enough to make this watchable.

The First
(2018)

too heavily politicized
Not true sci fi !

I know Sean Penn is political, I saw "Witch Hunt (2008)" at TIFF. This is not what we want as a sci fi viewer in terms of exploration and scientific progress into the unknown.

After episode 2, lawyers and committee hearings consume 35% of screen time.

Sean, I admire that you have some measure of control of your films, but, I hate being reminded by what frustrates you poor Americans in your polarized system of government.
