The Suicide Squad
(2021)

Underwhelming...
It's not to say that it wasn't a fun, entertaining movie. It could be my expectations were too high or my mood, but it felt underwhelming.

The action was decent and chemistry was top notch. I have to say this is the best Harley i've seen. She is a tad bit toned down and has more layers, if that makes sense. Bloodsport, polk-a-dot man, King Shark, and Rick Flag were all pretty cool that had nice moments.

I just thought it was a bit long, like the pacing was a bit off. Also, the humour was a tad bit overboard. It felt like there was a new joke every minute. Some hit the mark, but a fair amount didn't.

I will most likely be watching this again soon now that I know what to expect. I can see this moving up to an 8, but not much more than that. I hope you enjoy it more than me.

Love and Monsters
(2020)

Unexpected Surprise
The action is fun. The monster designs are realistic and unique. The characters are likeable and charming, especially Boy (the dog).

I've watched this twice. I knew my son would love this movie so much that I had to watch it again (just as good the second time). He loved it just as much as me.

Does it have similarities to other apocalypse movies? Yes. It's the way it is executed that sets it apart. I know I didn't explain much of the movie, but it is best going in not knowing much. I was incredibly entertained from start to finish, I hope you feel the same after watching it.

Nobody
(2021)

I can't believe Bob Odenkirk pulled it off.
It's not a John Wick rip-off. It's similar in some ways, part of the story and part of the fight choreography. For me, that's it. To be honest, I thought the action would be as smooth as Wick, but its not. I am not saying that's a bad thing it's what helps set it apart.

Bob Odenkirk and Christopher Lloyd are the stars. I never would have imagined Bob pulling this off, I am glad I was wrong. You should watch the movie based on his action performance alone. The cool thing is...its not the only reason why you will enjoy it.

Turn the brain off and enjoy the ride. If that doesn't sound fun, don't watch it until it does.

Zack Snyder's Justice League
(2021)

Snyderverse experience
Man of Steel was a cool take on a modern day Superman, but always felt something was lacking.

BvS had underwhelming action sequences (other than Batman rescue scene) that were disappointing. I oddly understood and enjoyed the direction Snyder was going in, even though it wasn't perfectly executed.

JL was awesome. I really enjoyed the 4 hours. It took time to develop new characters while extending or improving the action. I cannot believe the intro to the Flash was removed from the theatrical cut, mind boggling. Also think the best part of the Snyder cut is the villain. Way more intimidating and has purpose. Really well done.

Wind River
(2017)

'How do you gauge someone's will to live'
Below are a few more quotes from the movie.

'You can't steer yourself from the pain'

'I know your looking for clues but you are missing all the signs'

This is a small example of why I love this movie. There are a lot of reasons, but the script is high on the list. It's not action packed and there's a lot of character building, but that wasn't an issue for me. It's deep, emotional and tough. Jeremy Renner is ridiculous in this movie. He is intense, tough, calm along with wise. Renner must have experienced some sort of pain in his life to be able to act the way he did. It's really a performance you can't miss. The rest of the cast are also great. Special shout out to Graham Greene for being able to add a bit of humour to a very deep and dark movie.

The movie is about a young Native American who dies from freezing to death because she was running away from something. It's hard to watch what actually happened, which makes an already intense movie harder to watch. That doesn't mean you shouldn't. If you can't handle some hard scenes, do a 10 second skip. In my mind, if you cant watch you are already emotionally invested. You will also want to see the outcome of the movie. The last 40 minutes are intense.

It's a must see!

Promising Young Woman
(2020)

Promising Young Woman Indeed
Fantastic movie. The subject matter is as tough as it comes, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't see it.My wife and I were glued to the TV to watch what would happen next. The last 30 minutes were jaw dropping, the last 5 were earth shattering.

As much as this movie is dark and depressing it also has sweet and funny moments. You go along for the emotional ride with the lead. If you connect with the movie, you will feel the emotion she feels as it occurs.

Its the most powerful movie i've seen in some time. I had tears of sadness and happiness at the end. I can't say that has happened to me often. Please watch.

Ted Lasso
(2020)

It's worth 5.99$ on its own
That's the Canadian price, but you get the point. You don't need to love sports or Football (soccer to us North American folk) to like this show. It's as charming and funny as anything you've seen in years. Seriously, it's awesome.

Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood
(2019)

It's classic Quentin
I love Tarantino. His writing is so engaging, its like watching a well choreographed John Wick action sequence. I also think Brad and Leo are two of the best actors of our time.

The above needed to be said because I may be bias towards this movie. However, I had to watch this movie more than once to truly enjoy it. I didn't fully understand the movie the first time around. Lots of interconnecting stories and conversation that i thought had no purpose. So, when time came for it to end, I was a bit lost.

My second viewing made me realize the point of the movie. It's life as a late 60's movie star who is at the point if his career that he doesn't want to be. Along for the ride is a good friend who just so happens to be his stunt man. What follows is a lot of interconnecting stories that move it along. It really is a story about old Hollywood. There are so many fun scenes that I found myself saying 'oh, i like this part' quite often. It made me realize how much more i liked the movie.

The point is you need to appreciate Quentin's writing and the joy of watching the acting take place. I get lost in both Leo's and Brad's character. They have amazing chemistry when together, but their charm is also in full force during the scenes they are apart. There's a part where Leo is filming a scene for a TV show. Its so well done that at one point I forgot that I was watching Once upon a time... and instead watching a western. I get lost in so many moments, but isn't that what's special about Quentin.

The ending confused me the first time around. I realize that the last 20 crazy minutes of the movie have a purpose. I won't ruin it. All I will say is what i've heard a lot over the years...it's all about who you know.

Busanhaeng 2: Bando
(2020)

Zombie rush!
You won't enjoy this movie if you compare it to the original. Train to Busan was great from start to finish. The 7.6 rating is proof of that.

As for a zombie movie, it was good. The effects are not always the greatest and the emotional scenes are rarely felt, but the action is good. Main male lead is good with a gun, which makes it fun. There is also a wicked 'mad max-esque' chase scene at the end that is worth the viewing alone. There is also some nice chemistry between some of the leads.

If you like zombie movies and can look passed the cheap and melodramatic moments, you will enjoy it.

Kajillionaire
(2020)

Entertained by good performances...
Then you should watch it.

I enjoyed the acting quite a bit. You can say that most of the rating is because of how good it is. If you are someone who can't be entertained by acting alone, this may not be for you (not that its bad if you cant). I did enjoy the story, however it was slow moving. The characters are not overly likeable, which can be another downfall, but that didnt bother me either.

Its a bit artsy, a bit long, and very dry. With that said, wicked performances and great chemistry between two perticular people made this enjoyable.

Kamera o tomeru na!
(2017)

Awesome! But not what I expected.
From my perspective, awesome! I was so excited for this movie that I signed up to shudder as it was the only place I could find it. I read a number of reviews before watching this movie and they pretty much all said the same thing...Watch the movie with no expectations. I have to say that this is a fact.

Unfortunately, I didn't listen to the advice. I was very disappointed in the movie at the beginning. It really wasn't what I had on my radar. I had so many ideas of what this could be about, I wasn't even close.

In the end, once you get used to the idea, you will have a good time. I laughed out loud a number of times and truly touched by the end of the movie. The best advice I can give to you is pick this movie if you are looking for a little bit of everything.

The Head Hunter
(2018)

Not for me
I've sAid it before and will say it again, reviews should be written to help someone decide whether they should watch the movie or not. Therefore, I am going to advise you of the facts first without spoiling much. I will conclude with my opinion.

The movie is more about the physical and mental struggle one man suffers trying to kill monsters while collecting their heads. I would say a max of 30 words are said in the entire movie. The second half of the movie is him searching for and battling the monster that killed his daughter. The movie is low budget and you can tell in some scenes.

Now for my quick opinion, it was a concept that needed a little help and more money. I have no doubt i would have enjoyed this concept if it wAs better executed. Not the fault if the director, just no support. Good effort and hope to see something similar with more backing in the future. BTW-the ending was pretty cool.

The Debt Collector
(2018)

Throwback to the late 80's early 90's action movies
I stumbled upon this movie on a night where i didn't feel like searching for 2 hours to decide what to watch. It was a pleasant surprise.

I have to say the chemistry between the two leads is what was most entertaining. They made me LOL multiple times and had me engaged in their conversations. I've seen Scott Adkins before, but he does the best work i've seen in this movie. Not saying its amazing acting, just that he is very convincing as charming and charismatic person. Same can be said about his costar. The fight scenes are the best part of the action. They are very 80's and 90's like. Try to think Van Damme fight scenes with Jason Statham fighting skills. It was fun to watch even though it was over the top.

The bad parts can be cringe worthy at times. The acting from the supporting roles are bad, but they have so little screen time that it doesn't have a huge impact. The gun fights on the other hand are hard to watch. It is so 80's style that i thought of movies from that time instantly. People can't hit a thing. They can be in the same room and have trouble hitting the target. Again, small portion of the movie but hurt to watch.

If you like the late 80's/early 90's action flicks, if you like a dual type of buddy action/comedy or a hand to hand action movie, this is for you. If dont like any if the above, watch at your own risk.

The Last Days of American Crime
(2020)

Entertained me
Honestly, not as bad as I expected. Maybe it was the 0 rotten score or 3.6 rating that made me have such a low expectation, but I was entertained.

I will say a lot of what people say is pretty accurate. The acting wasn't awful, but it wasn't always good. The story was a bit all over the place and some characters that you thought would have a bigger impact, didn't. The chemistry between actors were poor with only glimpses of what could have been. The movie also takes itself too serious. A little more tongue and cheek type of fun would have made some of this easier to watch.

For what I thought was good, the action was alright. It reminded me of action from the 80's. A lot of people holding guns that can't aim, but still thought it was fun. It's kind of the same with the car chases and explosions, all over the top fun. Finally, I hated the villains in the movie, hated them. Why is this good? Because that means I couldn't wait to see them pay for being so annoying. Not saying they do, just saying they made me annoyed enough to make me mad. I always give credit to actors who bring out real emotion, and the real villains of the movie did that.

All in all, its a wasted opportunity. I love the template of the story. Unfortunately, it wasn't executed well. I think the 3.6 and zero rotten score is not fair, but than again its a matter of opinion. It personally caught my attention enough that I was curious what would happen at the end.

Beoning
(2018)

A little long
I would give this a solid 7.5...

My only issue is the 2.5 hour run time. I don't see the purpose in all the moments in the movie, which always makes me feel the writer, director or both are a little pretentious.

It's a very good movie that could have been great. I would recommend to those who enjoy movies all over the world.

Girl on the Third Floor
(2019)

It was bad.
I watched this movie based on the reviews from rotten tomatoes and the good reviews here....i made a mistake.

The movie was poorly acted and scripted. I don't care as much when a character makes dumb decisions. We live in a world where people make odd choices. The interactions were cheesy because of the script and terrible acting by the main lead. He was bad, really bad. Felt like he was doing a bad Bruce Campbell impersonation.

The story itself was ok. If you can look past the acting and bad dialogue, give it a shot.

Brightburn
(2019)

I've seen it before with a different spin to it.
Honestly, I wanted to love this movie. Unfortunately I only marginally liked the movie.

The biggest issue is it is no different than any horror movie involving a mysterious child. The only difference is its a bad version of superman instead of a demon or alien or murderer . What makes the movie ok is most of the actors and the attempt at putting a cool spin on a superhero origin. It would have been difficult to not have certain cliches in this movie, but a better effort in character development would have been appreciated.

I would say 6.5 out of 10. The biggest issue is predictability.

A Ghost Story
(2017)

?????
I will start by saying I am at a bit of a loss. I finished the movie a few days ago, and it is still on my mind. Not because I loved it, as you can tell by my rating, however because I don't understand it.

It's about a man who dies and instead of going to the afterlife he decides to stay with his wife, as a ghost, in their house. I don't think the writer/director had enough material to make a movie. The movie has a short runtime, however manages to feel long winded. For example, we spend close to 5 minutes watching the widow eat a pie before throwing up from eating too fast,I suppose it was her way of mourning. It's not that I didn't understand the scene its that there was no real weight to it. I didn't feel the personal attachment to this particular scene, I just wanted it to end. There are a number of scenes like this which make it very slow moving.

The acting is fine, probably the best thing about the movie. Having a sheet on the main characters head for most of the movie makes it difficult to judge the acting on his part, however you do have a sense of what he is feeling during certain scenes. It's my reason for the three stars as anyone can imagine how difficult it would be to portray emotion through a sheet. Other than that I don't have much positive to say. It could have been done with more weight without being over emotional. I don't think that is what the writer was going for. They set out to make an arthouse movie that will make you think. I don't mind that style of movie as long as you don't make something that has a runtime of an hour and a half but feels three hours.

Watch at your own risk!

Dragged Across Concrete
(2018)

I enjoyed it 100%
I have to start by saying I enjoy the work from S. Craig Zahler. Bone Tomahawk was a bloodbath of a western and Brawl In Cell Block 99 hit you like a sledgehammer, in the best way possible.

I will start with what I enjoyed...

The character development was spot on. The interaction between actors were engaging, some more than others. Every scene felt like it had purpose, it may have been for an emotional attachment, or to make you understand the mindset of an individual. If you enjoy the small details in movies, this is for you. The sly way of someone saying something to another character. The purpose of a scene that does not seem relevant at the time, but will. A lot of small details that I really appreciated. The storyline of the movie was well done. The movie was filmed in a way to make you feel like you are there, in the action. It was very intense at times, so much so that I forgot to breath at times. Loved all the actors involved. Not going to lie it was interesting to see Mel Gibson in a different role. It was similar in a sense of how aggressive he is, but the personality was different.

What I didn't enjoy...

It's simple, a lot of the scenes were longer than they needed to be. The writer/director has made a movie that feels a more self-indulgent. He tried to make a scene longer for no apparent reason other than he must have loved everything he wrote. I would not remove a single scene, however I would shorten a few of them.

All in all the movie was great. It is dark and grimm, but engages you at all times, even the boring ones. You never know what could happen due to what led to the events. At no times does the movie pull any punches, which is what I love most about the movie.

Bad Times at the El Royale
(2018)

Stop asking for good original movies if you end up not liking this!
To start I am a HUGE Quentin Tarintino fan. He is the best writer/director of our time. The reason why I mention this is because I have seen no other movie similar to a Tarintino film, until El Royale. There are only two differences, first the dialogue is not as well written. This is not to say the story isn't great because it is. I mean the dialogue between the actors is a little less crisp as it would be in a Tarantino film. Second, it's not as violent. It sure has its moments, however any fan of Quentin will no the difference.

Now for the movie itself it is best to not know much. It feels much shorter than the actual length. The intertwining stories are all engaging, even though some are better than others. The acting is fantastic!! Anyone who says the acting was bad must not know the difference between good or bad. Everyone feels perfect for the role they play. The casting director honestly deserves kudos. There is a small twist at the end I did not see coming. I think I would call anyone a liar if they said they did.

All in all if you like a Tarantino style film you must see this. Even if you like the style of his films, but find his dialogue offence, you'll prefer this. It was a wonderful surprise. I would rank it in my top five of the year.

Mowgli
(2018)

The dark side of JB
I honestly was hoping for better. I like Serkis so much I was routing for a great first directorial debut. Instead I watched a movie that was inconsistent. It had some good moments and some boring moments. It never realy impressed me. The animals looked good, but I never really cared for them. When you make a dark movie like this, or any movie for that matter, you need to have characters you care for. Unforutunately I didn't really care if anyone lived it died. All I cared about was when will it end. I hope Serkis gets another chance down the road. I see potential.

Assassination Nation
(2018)

WILD!!!
It's extreme, it's crazy, and it's fun if you don't take it seriously. The acting is on point. The pacing is pretty good. The lack of realism is a bit laughable. If you can handle crazy and nonsense with a touch of comedy you will enjoy it.

Sorry to Bother You
(2018)

Six for no other reason than making a messed up socially conscious film.
The movie is clever in its own odd way. The last twenty minutes completely lose me. I think they could have gone a different way and still get the same point across. Please keep your mind open when watching this movie. If I would have had an idea with what direction they were going I may have enjoye it more. I also think the movie is at least 15 minutes too long.

Mission: Impossible - Fallout
(2018)

If it was possible to not breath for two and a half hours this movie would have prooved it.
Ok, maybe the headline is a tad dramatic, but im sure you get the point. The movie has so many great moments. I also don't understand how some are saying the plot is dumb, how? Maybe im the dumb one for thinking its incredibly smart...

The action is heart pounding at a breakneck pace. The storyline is tight as every moment is important. Lets just say there will never be the right moment to go to the bathroom. If you do, you wont be able to ask what you missed because you'll miss something else in the meantime.

I wont say much as nothing should be ruined when you see this movie. All i will say is this is the most human you have ever seen Ethan Hunt. Tom Cruise is fantastic in this movie along with all of the cast. There's a lot of heart, and i think that is the first time i have used that term for a MI movie. The last three have all been fantastic in their own way, but I can understand why some are saying this is the best.

9.5 out of 10

Revenge
(2017)

What is everyone going on about?
Ok, i am a little lost with some of the reviews. Did i miss the part of the movie where it said it was based on a true story?!

No, I know i didn't because when i found out it was about 1 woman getting revenge on 3 men who are hunters, I knew I would have to turn my brain off at times. I watched the movie the other night with my GF and we both were incredibly entertained. I was on the edge of my seat for most the movie. It was a bit hard to watch at times due to how graffic some of the scenes were, however you wont miss much if you look away for a second. I almost skipped the movie due to a rape scene, which i honeslty hate in movies. It ended up being just enough for you to hate a couple of the men, about 15 seconds long.

The acting was good. I am so impressed on how entertaining the movie is without much dialogue in the last half. The lead has zero lines in the last hour and still you want her to win the battle. I wont get into detail, but check it out if you like a good suspense/revenge flick.

And for pete sakes do not watch the movie if you are looking for something based on real events or something that would feel like it actually happened. If you can just shut your brain off for a little, you will enjoy the movie.
