Aspirational Slut
(2022)

Love it!
I loved it. This is a short, funny and sweet film, with great pacing, good acting, catchy cinematography, some very well written lines and a relatable storyline. I think it deserves a much better rating.

The Little Things
(2021)

Shaking my head
What could go wrong if you put phenomenal actors Denzel Washington, Rami Malek and Jared Leto together? A movie called Little Things, is what.

Denzel's character is clearly carrying a burden of a past. But other than some randomly inserted flashbacks, there is no fleshing out of that past in the 2 hour long movie. Denzel fumbles through the movie like a tired Equalizer.

Rami is completely miscast in the role of a senior cop who is handling the serial murder case. He comes across as the creepy Safin from "No time to die", even when they are trying to portray him as a regular father of two children and that doesn't help the plot at all.

Jared is great, and is in probably the only watchable moments in the entire film. But the wafer thin plot doesn't utilize him fully.

To top it all, the film crawls on, pretending to be a slow burn thriller, but doesn't make the mark.

Great!
I loved this movie. It's got a great cast, camera work, all the slasher film tropes and that 70s feel to it. On the downside, I think the excessive use of prosthetic makeup for the oldies wasn't really needed.

Scream
(2022)

Unbelievably bad
There are earnestly-made bad sequels that fail to re-create the original's charm. And then there are terrible sequels that should never have been made because they have nothing to offer, but are just looking to make a few quick bucks off of the original's fame. This movie is the latter. It is so bad, it's hard to watch even with the generous use of fast-forward. I don't know how Neve Campbell and the erstwhile Arquettes agreed to be a part of this travesty.

Those Who Walk Away
(2022)

This could have been a great film
For the first 45 minutes, I really liked Max and Avery and their chemistry. The whole date that they go on was interesting and weird and exciting and creepy and intriguing and tense and all of that. I really liked how the film makers were able to set an eerie unsettling tone.

After they get to the haunted house however, everything went haywire with the plot. It's tragic because this film could have actually been a great one if it weren't for the sheer cacophony of the second half.

Gehraiyaan
(2022)

Visually great - shoot locations, camera and Deepika
For a movie titled Gehraiyaan, there was hardly any depth to the characters. Zain (Siddhanth) starts out like he was a deep fella, but turns into a hormonal teenager in 5 minutes. Alisha (Deepika) is a stress-ball because of an estranged dad, unemployed boyfriend and a mom who killed herself. But two lame pickup-lines later she's playing tonsil hockey with this yacht boy. Very convenient. A little more nudity would have helped ignore the complete lack of depth of these two or the complete pointlessness of their backstories. Some decent acting from both of them though. But you can't help shake off the feeling that they are playing generic stereotypes in an affair rather than the strong characters the script perhaps intended for them to be.

I feel sad for the other two - If I run into the guy who played Alisha's boyfriend at the mall, I wouldn't know, because he blended into the furniture so well. Tia (Ananya Pandey) has some promise as an actress, but I don't think her role as a sidekick to the side-chick brought the best out of her.

Alright that's all for now.

Jailbait
(2014)

Sara Malakul
10 stars for Sara Malakul's rack which is on constant display throughout the movie. There isn't much else of a plot or acting chops to measure this film by. It's pure entertainment.

The Night House
(2020)

Hall is amazing!
This movie is genuinely scary, in spite of or because of its slow pace. The cinematography is pleasing. Hall does a brilliant job of portraying a grieving widow, who is struggling to come to terms with her husband's suicide.

The jump scares are quite unexpected and work very well. I was a bit confused with the ending, but overall I'd say this is a great film for horror buffs.

Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare
(2019)

Beware of fake users and fake ratings!
There's a bunch of users who created their account in August/September 2020 who have rated the movie 10/10. There's another bunch of users who created their account in July 2020 who have rated the movie 7/10. The other movies these users have rated recently are Abhay, Four more shots, Gunjan Saxena and Mrs.Serial Killer. So obviously there is a factory of fake users trying to crank up the average ratings. That speaks volumes about how good this movie is.

Lovefucked
(2018)

Loved it but...
I stumbled across this film quite by accident and wasn't actually planning on watching it, but I did. It is one of those art house films that a not a lot of people will watch and those who will watch it will either love it or think it's utter rubbish. I'm one of those leaning towards loving it. For one, the acting is fantastic. The premise of an abusive casual relationship is painfully real. The dialogues seem natural and delivered by what seem to be seasoned theater actors. I wasn't expecting the intimate scenes to be shown as elaborately as they were, but they were important to the tone of the film which is essentially a power dynamic. I would have preferred a happier ending to the film. Or even a sudden end with no real conclusion but one with many open questions like they typically do in artsy films would have been satisfactory. The end of the film didn't leave much room in your head to think of the characters fondly. Hence I give it a 6 instead of a higher rating.

Breathe: Into the Shadows
(2020)

Doh
I watched only episode 1 of season 1. If I ever watch the rest and feel any different, I'll come back and update this review. A kid gets kidnapped and the kidnapper reaches out to the parents almost a year later with an iPad displaying a video of their daughter in captivity eating a tomato salad and in ransom he asks the dad to kill this random guy by making him so angry he pops a vein. It is this sort of misplaced inventiveness that makes a potentially gripping thriller, a complete farce. I am all for creative license, but a plot has to be believable at some level, even if it is sci-fi, that it is possible for it to happen in an alternate universe. This reveal at the end of s01e01 doesn't make any sense at all and I have to abort my plans of watching the rest. Sorry!

Ladies Up
(2020)

Meh
I watched this show out of order. The Coimbatore girl was not bad. With some more confidence and better delivery, she can be real good. My first time watching Prashasti and I thought she was pretty good. I like that she's a girl from a small town doing standup in the big city, easily switching between Hindi punchlines that land and not-held-back narratives in English. I have seen Kaneez perform a few times and I can't help but wonder "Girl, what's your plan B? Coz, this standup thing isn't really working out for you". I would have liked to say that in this show, she turned me. But she didn't. Sorry, I couldn't be bothered to get to the 4th chick. This was hard.

The Quiet
(2005)

And the dumbest movie ever award goes to....
This movie is seriously the dumbest movie I've seen in a long time. And I have seen "the all american bikini car wash". So it starts off alright with some creepy undertones. And very soon it is revealed that the dad is a nutso who's abusing his daughter. That's perhaps the only thing that makes logical sense in the whole movie. Everything else makes you wish you had a whiff of that crack the screenwriters were smoking.

Indian Matchmaking
(2020)

Come on stop hating you guys!
You will love the effervescent Nadia. And then you'll love the humble lawyer Sekhar. And then you'll love the gentle giant Vyasar. And then the cute vet Rashi. You will not like the stubborn Aparna at first. But over the season, you'll start to warm up to her and actually root for her to find love. You'll roll your eyes at the hard-to-please Pradyumna and then you'll feel the warm fuzzies when the gorgeous Rushali tames him with just one smile. And Sima. She's your typical matchmaker auntie and if you're a woke liberal, she'll have you fuming in 5 minutes and you'll label her and the show pregressive. But by the end of the season, you'll be admiring her for the job she manages to do with the slick finesse of Winston Wolfe. Like her or not, she's the real MVP. Agree that some of the show may be scripted, but these are real people and real stories and the reality of how thousands of Indians are approaching marriages even today. If you're not able to appreciate it, clearly you're missing the forest for the trees and you're busy being offended because you think you are some kind of flag bearer of Indian culture done right. But you aren't. So stop hating and give this show a chance.

Mirzapur
(2018)

Amazing show.
Amazing show.

A few things felt a bit jarring though.

The way the Pandit boys get ready to kill and become trigger-happy overnight.

The flashback scenes which employed different actors to play younger versions rather than use some smart make-up on the existing actors.

The gang-war between Mirzapur & Jaunpur seemed pointless without a real pay-off. Maybe it paves way for season two.

Akhanda, the don himself - doesn't really do anything throughout the season. We don't really get to see Pankaj Tripathi's acting chops.

But great show nevertheless. Great acting by a lot of people I have never seen before.

Never Have I Ever
(2020)

I shouldn't like this show...
This show is full of character cliches and cringe-inducing acting - The overly dramatic Korean actress, the gay Spanish best friend, the hot jock, the conceited rich but lonely kid, the overly traditional Indian mom. The narration by Captain Obvious, John McEnroe, works at times, but most of the time has you thinking "how dumb do they think the audience is, to have every scene spelled out?". I shouldn't like this show, but I did. Immensely enjoyed it even. It's a fun show to watch and has its touching moments. The girl who plays Devi fits her role perfectly and carries the show on her shoulders. If there's a season two, I'd like to see other characters also step up to play their parts and not just play backdrop to Devi's soliloquy.

Unfreedom
(2014)

How this movie was made..
"Let's make a movie and make some money off it. You know what sells? Nudity. Okay great, I know this Indian chick who's okay to be nude, but she doesn't want to do full frontal nudity. Damn. We need a white chick for that. Okay, found one on Craigslist. Now if we are spending half our budget on these ladies, may as well get them to make out. Okay! Done. Lesbian lovers. But what's the plot? There isn't one. Wait. Indian woman obviously has arranged marriage to deal with. So let's introduce that as the main conflict. *Blows raspberries*. Not hard-hitting enough. Let's bring some religion and extremism in the mix. It's sure to get our film banned which means more people will want to watch it. Yass! We got this."

Too Hot to Handle
(2020)

Why the hate?!
I don't understand why there are so many hating on this show and giving it really bad ratings. A bunch of good looking people at a retreat on a beautiful beach, going from hormonal bunnies to decent well rounded humans is a pretty decent plot for a reality show even if some of it is scripted. Some of the characters and their interactions are actually quite moving. Like David giving up Rhonda for his boy Sharron. Kelz or Matthew never once being sleazy because they want to do the right thing. Francesca really gunning to be with Harry. Yacht-boy Bryce admitting he was bullied as a boy and had to put on this front of being cool all the time. I think it was all very relatable and human. Give it a chance you guys!

Seth Meyers: Lobby Baby
(2019)

Oh Sethie
This gig is like your excited friend telling you all about how he got married and had babies. You want him to shut up, but you are too polite and just chuckle away like it's all funny, because the booze is free.

Rhythm + Flow
(2019)

Rhythm + Flow + Keepin' it real
Talent shows are hella rigged these days. I mean there's contestants who've already won some other big show. Or there are these "wild-card" entries where they bring back folks who've already been eliminated. Or there's rockers pitted against R&B artists or musical theater people making the comparison akin to apples and oranges. Or the judges themselves have no solid background in music. This show feels raw and real in comparison because everyone here is about rapping. The judges. The contestants. They're all real people who use rap as an outlet to express their emotions and tell their story. I enjoyed it immensely.

Badla
(2019)

Not as good as the original
The original "The Invisible Guest" was brilliant. This remake doesn't match up due to a lot of reasons.

If you are going to remake a Spanish film for Bollywood with Indian characters, you may have as well gone all the way and based it in India with some tweaks. There was no need to tell the story in a foreign country where everyone is surprisingly Indian.

The big twist towards the end works in the original mainly because the acting and therefore the direction is great. The contrast in the role reversal stands out and you are genuinely mind blown when it happens. Tapsee and Tony have the same expression and attitude throughout the film. In the hands of more competent actors, this could have been a great film. These two are obviously miscast.

The cinematography in the original is brilliant. Even though this movie has copied everything, it doesn't match up to the captivating visual appeal of the Spanish version.

Vertigo
(1958)

A far fetched plot
A cop retires from services because he has vertigo. And another guy decides to use this fact to plot the murder of his own wife, by making up a story that his wife is possessed by a woman who died like a century ago. Seems like a far fetched plot. But it works, because it's Hitchcock. There's romance. There's mystery. There's drama. And there is the old world charm of San Francisco in the 50s. Worth a watch!

Dave Chappelle: Sticks & Stones
(2019)

Don't miss the epilogue!
What a great set! It had me in splits. Dave covers everything from opioid crisis, MeToo, guns, LGBTQ, Michael Jackson and is irreverently funny throughout. The epilog story about his meeting with Obama was dope.

Crashing
(2016)

Brilliant
All I have to say is that this show is brilliant and deserves to be watched and loved by more people. Go Phoebe!

Searching
(2018)

Kudos!
A daughter goes missing and the dad tries to piece the puzzle together by going over her digital trail. Nice plot. Very well executed. Hits you in the feels. Also keeps you on the toes with the unexpected twists. Great acting by Mr.Cho, taut editing and great work by the animation team in recreating all the computer stuff. Kudos!
