City Homicide: Thicker Than Water
(2008)
Episode 1, Season 2

One of the best episodes of TV I've ever seen
The acting in this episode was remarkable. The storyline was incredible. In particular the actor who played Gregory, Simon Wood, was a standout. It's too bad I don't see any of his other work because I had to rewind his scene towards the end about 5 times.

This show is quite good, and I think this is by far the best episode I've seen thus far.

Fake words here... I wish this site was not so ridiculous when it comes to their minimum review length. I don't understand that.

But I can say that the episode I am reviewing is wonderful. I encourage everyone and their mother and their brother and their sister to watch.

Australia Come Fly with Me
(2020)

Felt like I was at Sunday school
This felt like I was at Sunday school all over again. Getting preached at is not enjoyable a bit. I don't need to be taught how great First Nations people are, I don't need to be beaten to understand that women have a place in the airline industry. This is ALL the TV show discusses, along with a few salacious bits about sex.

It seems like Australian TV can't stop trying to beat everyone over the head just how VIRTUOUS they are. Tired of this trend. Give me actual content, not PREACHING at me.

Tokyo Vice
(2022)

I really tried to enjoy this series
Tokyo Vice just does not work with Ansel Elgort character being horribly uninteresting. Also, Rachel Keller is as interesting as watching grass grow.

She was good in Fargo, decent in Legion, but her acting REALLY needs a few refresher courses. It's like I'm watching her rehearsals, she just feels off. Elgort never was good in the first place, so there's that.

Both of their characters probably could have been written as train jumping motorcycle racing people and I still would have found Elgort and Keller boring. I don't care about who learned to speak Japanese either. I just wanted a decent television show and Tokyo Vice came up short.

The direction is good. Set design is fine. Script was boring though, just like Elgort and Keller. Go watch grass grow instead of trying to suffer through these dull boring dry episodes.

North Sea Connection
(2022)

Decent acting let down by the tired writing
This was presented as a dramatic thriller but it should have been labeled a snooze. The acting is okay, but the story line is so incredibly hackneyed. Just ridiculous scenarios one after another. For example, after the incident on the boat, why do the two actors on the boat seem incredibly relaxed? Someone just died, yet they're acting as if it's just another day at the office.

So here is what you are going to always see on Irish TV, thanks for paying your license:

βœ… Girl boss (She's tough too, she punches a bloke! Good lessons are being taught)

βœ… Diverse couple (mandatory)

βœ… Bad white guy (mandatory)

Why does Irish TV continue to pretend that a significant majority of the country has dark skin? Are we trying to prove something to the US? That we can out-diverse them? When can we get decent television that doesn't imply how awful white men are?

Giving this series 3 stars out of 10 because some of the scenery is pretty.

Combat Ships: The Battle of Trafalgar
(2022)
Episode 2, Season 3

Awfully boring, slow, made me fall asleep.
These "naval experts" were I guess borrowed from an Apple diversity commercial. Tedious interviews, very little illuminating information.

A huge portion of this program is spent discussing how ethnic the crews were. That's not why people watch these shows. I (used to) tune in to learn about history, naval battles, and the ships themselves. Now it's all a huge diversity lesson. Garbage television. Going back to Drach on youtube, he gives us solid information without the woke garbage. So glad my family has canceled our cable package.

My story has ended but now I have to keep typing for some reason.

Old School
(2014)

Not clever. Unfunny writing. Tried to be Odd Couple, failed.

You know when you have a mate that thinks they're funny, but they're not at all? I feel like the writers of this show fall into that category. Good acting from Sam Neill but I can tell he was wincing when he had to do these "haha funny fart jokes" and all the rest of this tripe.

The Challenge: USA
(2022)

Dull, tepid, vacuous, vacant boring TV
Why did they hire this guy to be the host? He's got zero charisma. Why did they make this show look like a mix between an NBA team and an impoverished seedy nightclub? Why is the show filmed in Argentina? Why does the show feel so EMPTY? It's all so stupid I just don't care. I am going back to watch OLD seasons of Survivor or Big Brother. You know, before CBS ruined everything with these new "rules".

BTW, did I mention how uninspired and lifeless the host is? πŸ’€πŸ’€πŸ’€

Vera: On Harbour Street
(2014)
Episode 1, Season 4

We couldn't make heads nor tails of this episode.
We've loved every single episode of Vera so far, but this one was a train wreck. So many characters were shown, almost all of them meant absolutely nothing to the story. Also, pretty sure if I had a knife stuck in my back I would notice. It's not like a mosquito bite!

I didn't like how they badmouthed the former Medical Examiner either. I liked that fella. Overall, writing wise a very poor episode. I hope S4 doesn't continue down this path as we've enjoyed the series up til now.

The Pillars of the Earth: Anarchy
(2010)
Episode 1, Season 1

I cannot believe how cheap this feels
I wasn't expecting this to be "premium" television, but this honestly almost feels like a CW production. The acting is good, the writing seems fine, but editing & direction are off the rails BAD. The scene in the forest required a stuntman, why I don't know, but anyway the stuntman and the actor are apparently interchangeable in the scene. They didn't even try to hide the stuntman's face. Really lazy direction and editing.

The Pembrokeshire Murders: Episode #1.1
(2021)
Episode 1, Season 1

The writer & editor for this series needs to be sacked
The scene where 6 different people start explaining the murders, about 2/3 of the way through, is one of the best examples of how NOT to edit. Unbelievably choppy editing. 6 different people all randomly spewing their lines in a shotgun spray fashion. It's migraine inducing, I can't believe this made it to air.

Becoming Elizabeth
(2022)

Bad Acting, Bad Screenwriting, Bad Music
I'm amazing to me that people worked on this show, and actually thought it might be good. The acting is atrocious. I felt like I was watching Youtube d-listers jokingly pretend to act. This entire production feels like a SNL skit and the music for "Becoming Elizabeth" is really stupid too. The entire show is a waste of oxygen and money. I'm convinced that STARZ production is living it up at a perpetual happy hour. 🍸🍻

Under the Banner of Heaven
(2022)

Was Andrew Garfield too hormonal for this role?
I wanted to enjoy this series, but Andrew Garfield just is WAY too emotional to be taken seriously. He is seriously about to cry in half the scenes, and it's too much. I liked the other actors and the script is fine. It probably should be 6 episodes, maybe if someone edited out all of AG's weepiness it would be down to 3 episodes.

Welcome to Flatch
(2022)

Extremely Unfunny
I had hoped this would finally be a genuinely funny TV show to add to our lineup, but unfortunately it's just the opposite. Unfunny, hackneyed and predictable.

Also, anyone who is legitimately attempting to go by the moniker "Holmes" is destined for a career with a telephone that never rings.

Babylon Berlin: Episode #3.10
(2020)
Episode 10, Season 3

I tried, but this season is just awfully stupid
S1 & S2 were brilliant. I've slogged my way through S3 but the start of this episode just epitomizes how absurd S3 actually is. Trying so hard to be Eyes Wide Shut, combined with Exorcist, combined with Victor Victoria.

Production & the writers also went overboard with shoehorning in dumb storylines for S1 & S2 characters. I tried, I give up, this is beyond imbecilic and contrived.

Trackers
(2019)

Awful, ridiculous, and laughable
Okay, so you just interview a guy who has been shot by a bad guy. This guy also happens to have extremely sensitive information about a serious threat to your national security. What do you do?

You let him walk out of the police station, of course! I laughed loud enough to wake the neighbors, so thank you for that!

This show was so bad , it should be embarrassing to all those associated with production. Truly awful.

Showtrial: Lady Tease
(2021)
Episode 3, Season 1

Bad Direction, Good Acting
I really loved this TV series until this episode. The spinning camera, the amateur emphasis on slow motion, and the absurd wannabe avant-garde "face partially in frame" shots ruined it for me.

Great acting, interesting story but the Director really ought to have stuck with what was working before. "Aggressively ridiculous" is what my film professor calls ideas like these.

Shetland: Episode #6.5
(2021)
Episode 5, Season 6

What happened to this show?
How did the editing team not catch the huge mistake in this episode? I won't go into it because I don't want to spoil anything, but ugh, Shetland used to be a very solid entertaining show. It has turned into a cheap soap opera.

Universe
(2021)

One long tiresome advertisement
My main point: "Universe" has ridiculous over-the-top music set to very pretty backdrops of people on piers, dads hugging their kids, and of course Brian Cox walking around in some far flung very remote location. I'm no scientist but I'm pretty sure the carbon expended to fly this guy and his giant film crew around the world isn't helping anything at all. Green screens do exist and they work quite well.

Main point emphasized: Please stop with the absurd music please. Every 5 minutes the producers want you to feel like you are inside Kubrick's 2001 and it's so bloody annoying.

The Rookie: Life and Death
(2021)
Episode 1, Season 4

Truly, Who watches this, unironically?
Who watches this garbage? I tuned in for the first time in a while and really got a kick out of how imbecilic this show has become.

I laughed so much through this episode of The Rookie. Unfortunately none of the laughter was intended by the writing team.

Nathan Fillion looks like he is suffocating, and moves like a robot. Is the set that stifling? Judging by the actors demeanor they all realise how profoundly stupid the scripts they've been handed are. The dialogue is painful. My favourite gem, delivered by an actress doing her best sultry Latina accent: "When I was a baby, I was dropped on my head. They said it damaged the part of my brain that controls Sleep & Sexual Arousal."

REALLY???

Survivor South Africa
(2006)

Very poor editing & production
I've seen every version of Survivor made and unfortunately South Africa is the absolute worst. 90% of the time all we see are the cast members bullying each other, "forming alliances" or just bad-mouthing each other. We never get to really know any of the cast members.

Plus, production comes up with really dumb ideas like "Immunity Island", or even worse, breaking up teams for absolutely NO reason. Embarrassing & glaringly amateur moves and it's too bad; I really wanted to like this show.

Lastly, the editing on Survivor SA is very poor. On Australian Survivor or Survivor US the clips are tight and on point. Survivor South Africa's production & editing team need to watch Survivor AU / Survivor US to learn how to put together a well-thought out & streamlined reality TV show.

SurrealEstate
(2021)

Silly stupid and surreal
The main point of this review is the lead actor is extremely boring and he seems like a mannequin whose mouth somehow happens to move. Secondary points: The writing is blah, the directing is thoughtless and milquetoast, and acting is sooo wooden. However the set design folks seem to have done very well! 2 points for the set design team!

I really was hoping to like this show, but alas, I really dislike it and will no longer watch.

The Straits
(2012)

Thank you for the laughs!
I watched this for about 5 minutes and LAUGHED so much. The acting was downright hilarious, the directing was hysterical. Thanks especially for showing us the 'fella' who got shot through the face with an arrow and he CONTINUED to pretend to point his toy gun! I can't stop laughing like a crazy person!

I really mean it - thank you for the most ridiculous first 5 minutes of a TV show I've ever seen! I'll always laugh so hard when I think of The Straits!

The Boss Baby: Family Business
(2021)

Boring + Not Funny
Was looking forward to watching this with the kids but unfortunately we turned it off after about half an hour. The story line was boring but sometimes that's okay - if the movie is funny but this one is... hmm how you say in English? A stinker!

Pereval Dyatlova
(2020)

8 episodes to tell such a brief story?
Well, we watched the first few episode and we had to gave up. How will they make eight episodes of this? I am telling you: They are watering this down so much it is silly.

Plus they really have a trouble when first episode they introduce a mystery German castle from 20 years previous? Why not stay on the track with one story line?

Ófærð: Episode #1.4
(2016)
Episode 4, Season 1

I always dynamite at night
Really? The director apparently insisted on extended night scenes ala "The Killing."

But really? Sending the old man up there to blast TNT at Midnight? Laughable.
