Batwoman
(2019)

Let the viewer work things out. Don't state the obvious.
The big reveal would have been better a few episodes in and less telegraphed. Its like they are afraid the viewers won't get it if they're subtle.

How is the dialog so bad? Has no one in the script room listened to real people talk? And the plot! less said the better. I did like that they made the step-sister surprisingly non-useless. However one minute Luke doesn't know who she is the next he knows her life story?

I actually like the actor, but give her better lines.

Bad starts are nothing new. 'Agents of Shield' didn't have a decent episode until the second half of the first season and most Star Trek series took a while to find their feet. Can this recover? Not looking good.

Jessica Jones
(2015)

Damaged Hardboiled Detective with a small side of superpowers
I liked how Jessica's powers are underplayed. She rips a car door off or crushes padlock like its nothing special, like its a cheap party trick, no big deal. Jessica's detective skills are what she really relies on, her powers make things more convenient thats all. It does give her a more male/macho attitude of never having to worry about walking into a dark alley. Jessica's fearlessness is as much due to her "life sucks" noir attitude as her powers though. And a big part of Killgrave's threat is that he represents something worse than mire death.

The Punisher
(2017)

I liked season 2 better.
In the comics I have read the Punisher was an unyielding unstoppable force of rage. I like Bernthal's shy gentle killing machine version better. I stopped reading the comic book version when he shot Micro in the head.

Season 2 is good, they didn't take the easy and obvious direction that we have seen to many times before and this version of Frank is very likeable, down to earth and self aware. There was also good continuity with the previous season.

Season 1 got a little ridiculous in the shear number people involved in his families death. I liked Dinah's arc specially and Micro's arc as well. It was good that the other characters got decent air time.

The Orville
(2017)

More Star Trek than Star Trek
Very loving put together. High production values. Has a lot of potential but doesn't live up to it. Needs more drama or more comedy or more something. Every-time it starts to get interesting they back off. The social commentary matches what's in the "air"; on the curve instead ahead of it. The moral of the story is always something I have heard too many times already.

The key to a good drama, thriller or even good comedy is characters you can invest in, you love them or you love to hate them. The cast is pseudo-loveable it wouldn't take much for the audience to invest in them, but that little bit extra that makes them different from the archetypes we have seen a thousand times before is missing.

There was lots of story potential for the ex-couple but it was all resolved after the second episode. They are way too comfortable together.

Too much, oh no, we are going crash into the planet for my tastes. Emotion damage can be a bigger threat than aliens with guns. The audience knows that the ship is not going to blow up, but a character can get emotionally devastated and they are still going to show up in the next episode.

Lost in Space
(2018)

Reboot done right
The most important things about LiS are a compelling Dr Smith and the relationship between Will and the Robot. The 1998 movie got this wrong but this new version gets both right. The new version of Smith is the perfect blend of charm, menice and cowardness while being completely different from the old one. They also fixed the problem with the old show were most of the cast had little to do. This time all the cast have well defined roles and personalities and are utilised well. Cons - John and Moreen don't have chemistry. This was okay when they were estranged but when they reconciled this became a problem. Cast rating from best to worst. Penny, Moreen, Smith, Don, Will, John then Judy. Judy isn't bad, she is way better than the original, but she didn't totally sell it for me.

There was one bad info dump in ep 5 or 6 that was jarring and threw me completely out of the story but otherwise the science wasn't too obnoxious, not great but way better than the original anyway.
