The Truman Show
(1998)

Amazing!! How Far Are We Willing to go to be Entertained?
I have seen The Truman Show so many times and I consider it one of my all-time favorite movies. It has such a simplistic feel to it, but it is loaded with satire and profound meaning. This is Jim Carrey's best performance in any of his films; by far, surpassing his performance in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

Truman Burbank is the star of his own reality TV show and he doesn't even know it. He is the first star born on set and legally adopted by a TV show. We've all felt the sensation that "this can't be happening to me, I must be getting Punked," But for Truman, this is his whole life. With a great cast and clever plot, Director Peter Weir weaves together a masterpiece.

The movie points out the insatiable nature of TV viewers (aka US), and the extent that producers and directors will go to please their audience. Forget morals; forget people's feelings or reputations, "we want to be entertained". Weir compares us to the Romans. Just as the Romans craved entertainment at the expense of Gladiators, we crave entertainment at the expense and reputation of TV stars, athletes and regular people. How far is society willing to go? And at what cost? The Truman Show asks this of its audience.

If you have not seen this movie, you must! It is just as, if not more applicable now than it was when the movie was released in 1998.

La passion de Jeanne d'Arc
(1928)

If Perfection Exists, This is it!!
Maria Falconetti's performance was life altering. If perfection in acting is possible, Falconetti would be the pioneer of perfection. I saw this movie the other day at an international cinema, having no prior knowledge about the film, just the fact that I love foreign films. I must say, it is now my all-time favorite movie. Period! The movie will stay with you forever. I was not merely watching the trial of Joan of Arc, I was experiencing it.

The lack of parallel lines and order in the set design adds to the surreal and nightmarish sensation of being falsely accused. However, Falconetti brings us back to reality from the surreal world with her movements and expressions of despair, hope, anguish, love, faith and devotion. All of which define the human experience. Seeing her on screen was like seeing myself, Falconetti's eyes were a window into humanity. I could feel what she felt, I could see what she saw, and I could understand what she understood. This emotional investment in the film had me in tears the entire time. Never have I experienced a movie like this.

Along with the powerful performance by Maria Falconetti (which I could discuss for days) was the incredible music score. "Voices of Light" by Richard Einhorn was perfect at setting the mood and helping the audience become emotionally invested in the film. After watching the movie I immediately bought the soundtrack.

If you let it, this movie can change your life, as it did mine.

Eddie the Eagle
(2015)

Great Movie!!
I went in to this movie not knowing what to expect. I hadn't heard anything about the movie from anyone I knew, but I am so glad I ended up watching it. Eddie the Eagle, like most biopics, does not strive for historical accuracy, but rather tries and succeeds in tugging at the heartstrings. In a trending wave of serious, depressing, anti-hero, "realism-pics" Eddie the Eagle shines. This feel good comedy/drama was inspiring. Taron Egerton's portrayal of Eddie Edwards was fascinating and believable, not in the sense of historical accuracy, but rather in his ability to make the audience believe in the impossible and dare to dream. Even when everyone but your mom is rooting against you, you can still achieve your dreams! You can't leave this move not feeling good. It was a great movie, and more should be made like it!
