Right out of the gate I figured Mickey 17 must be based on a book. It just has that feel of a good book, where the reader or viewer in this case, is challenged to think instead of being spoon fed.
It a hard to really explain the concept and themes of this movie without spoiling it. But it has all the elements of a good satirical novel and hard-core sci-fi elements often reserved for independent films and books. I was quite surprised that Mickey 17 was produced by a major studio, they really took some risks, and went away from your typical cash grab formula. I can name some themes explored in Mickey 17: 1. The problem of consciousness 2. Nietzschien idea of master slave relationship and ideas of superman Political ideologies not current political commentary (There isn't any cloning in this movie, Mickey is a biological copy)
I highly recommend this film to anyone who enjoys books by Kirt Vonnegut, and just loves deep dive sci-fi movies forcing you to reexamine the ideas of technology and ethics.
For the casual viewer, I still highly recommend it, just don't expect the characters to be black or white, and the concepts fully explained. This film expects you to be familiar with some ideas presented and gives explanations rather subtly as compared to more wide audience designed movies. So, it's worth a few views, or watch a YouTube explanation afterwards.
Lastly, in case you're a MAGA-person, don't let a few poor reviews throw you off that Mickey 17, makes fun of Trump. There is only one very short scene depicting hardcore MAGA fanatics. The main villain is nothing like Trump, if anything he is more of an incompetent Hitler type character, with a mix what's wrong with the political system at large.
Enjoy!

Unlike the modern Dune movies, our hero isn't chosen by a prophesy of some mysterious cosmic all powerful being (Paul Atreides), where there are no serious stakes. And unlike the Sand People of Tatooine, the Afghans are portrayed as real characters with complex culture and relationships.
The lead played by Jason Patric, is taken in by the Afghans after being abandoned by his own tank commander in a heat of a war ego battle. He doesn't have to ride sand worms or have knife duels, he still has to prove himself in a very hostile environment to a group of a warrior tribe who is hostile to him. The hero has to tread carefully at every step to save his life where he no longer has any allies.
Like every other reviewer I think this is a highly underrated film, in a sense that it should have gotten more marketing and recognition. It is a complex tale which is often missing from most war films. Yet because this movie is set in a Afghan War fought by hostile former Soviet Union, this war film can be told from a more objective view about the realities of war.

Good take on the overplayed genre. Glad to see that people are still trying to give the zombie horror genre a new twist, instead of the regular shoot'em up trope. Though, I love those as well but let's face it, anyone who knows anything about guns knows how horrible the gun play is in zombie films in general.
This movie is a little hard to get through, but it was worth it. It really doesn't take long to figure out what is actually happening for the big reveal, but still as an audience member I still don't know how the ending is actually going to play out.
Only issue I have with this film is that women are not capable of loving someone past their usefulness for a long time, it's not in their DNA, unless it's their child. I think the film would have made a much more powerful impact if the sexual roles were reversed.
