Oddball
(2015)

Delightful
There's something about these kind of Australian movies that is a little like a warm blanket being put around you.

Based on a true story, this has the elements of a children's foundation movie with loveable animals and slapstick humour.

Some of the wildlife photography and scenery were breathtaking, fantastic to see this area and find out about this heart-warming story.

The comedy was a delight, Jack had glorious comic timing and the scene with him pouring wine in a restaurant had me roaring with laughter, he followed it up with some great work with the trans. Gun.

One for all the family, the perfect length and was just a real feel-good movie.

Whiplash
(2014)

Gripping
It is very unusual that I stumble across a movie that absolutely has me by the throat from the start and never lets go, Whiplash is such a movie.

On paper, the plot doesn't amount to much, a tutor trying to mentor his subject to greatness. It could be about the music and indeed, the jazz numbers are terrific and well worth a download.

But this movie, is about two people. The obsessed boy genius who wants to be great and to be remembered after he's gone and his tutor, an absolute tour-de-force by J. K. Simmons. Abusive is quite frankly, not a strong enough word. He takes his own desperation and lack of personal success out on each of his students. Foul-mouthed, vicious in every way, vengeful and yet you cannot take your eyes off of him.

Just like the drummer, I finally drew breath in the brilliant final frame. What a movie!!

I Used to Be Famous
(2022)

Delightful.
An ex boyband star tries to find the success of the bright lights again with the aid of a young SEN drummer.

Is this a little cheesy? Yes!

Does it matter? No!

This is a delightful movie, full of humour, frustration, great tunes and sadness. The fact of the matter is, I found it believable, I couldn't take my eyes off of it and it made me feel good.

It reminded me a little of 'Love Actually' in its style and delivery.

The acting may not be Oscar worthy but is still very good. You felt like you understood the raging war going on inside Vinnie's head, Stevie was lovely and his mum put in the best performance of the lot.

I just didn't want this to end and was delighted that I decided to give it a try.

The Magic of Belle Isle
(2012)

Beautiful
Every now and then, you bump into a movie that you are not aware of and it blows you away.

This is a simple movie that moves along at a gentle pace. No car chases, no explosions, no fights, just a beautiful story.

Morgan Freeman is an alcoholic author with writer's block who moves to Belle Isle to house-sit and dog-sit. He gets to know the lady next door and her daughters.

Morgan Freeman and Virginia Madsen are perfect in their roles, an absolute masterclass in acting from both of them. All the supporting cast are spot on too. The location is gorgeous and just helps this movie slowly drift by.

It is thought-provoking, a love story, a coming of age story in a way and more than anything else, is a tale of human interaction and how necessary that is in every day life and to help us to grow.

It will not be for everyone, for me it is an absolute gem.

Perfect on Paper
(2014)

Not quite perfect
Perfect On Paper is your typical TV movie. Natalie played by Lindsay Hartley is a rookie book editor who is given the opportunity for her dream job at her friend's company. It turns out that the client/author she is assigned to is an absolute tyrant who nobody else is willing to touch.

Why somebody would hire her friend and toss her under the bus putting her own company at risk, is never really explained.

Hartley is okay in he lead role but it is author Beverly Wilcox who steals the show. She is suitably 'Lost In Showbiz' and pitches her character absolutely perfectly (excuse the pun) for the role and style of movie.

The two potential love interests were a little similar for my eyes both in appearance and behaviour, I would have liked more of a contrast.

The other support actors were likeable and slightly over the top in a good kind of way.

This is very light viewing but ticks a few boxes and sits neatly in Hallmark's winning tV movie formula.

Pieces of a Woman
(2020)

Powerful stuff
Almost too traumatic to watch at times, particularly the birth scene at the beginning with the impending tragedy.

After this, you find yourself watching a kind of ticking time bomb. I wasn't sure what was going to happen, was it going to end in violence, more tragedy, the tension almost seeped through the screen.

I was not aware of. Vanessa Kirby before this movie, what an outstanding performance she delivered, she left absolutely nothing in the rehearsal room and gave a performance, as powerful as I can remember. She was very well supported by the cast around her.

Grief must never be swept under the carpet, this movie, as hard as it is to watch at times, delivers a very important message.

Win, Lose or Love
(2015)

Easy on the eye
There are so many movies similar to this, a USP is required to make it really stand out. I'm not sure it has that, what it does have is charm and a gentleness to it.

Helena Mattsson is stunning and very likeable, casually dressed throughout, she still looks like she just stepped out of the page of a fashion brochure. Corey Sevier is a little too busy with his mannerisms but came on strong near the end. Catherine Hicks and Parker Stevenson as the old thespian loving couple gave a lesson in underplaying a romantic pairing, I thought they were terrific.

The kids did well and Greg Grunberg was suitably wacky.

This may not stick in the mind for too long but is perfect for a date movie or wet Sunday afternoon.

The Deerslayer
(1957)

Great location
Lex Barker hanging around with a Mohican, guys in Davy Crockett hats and two ridiculously beautiful women. Native Indians in canoes, all we needed was Hawaii 5-0 music.

The scenery with the cabin on the lake was stunning and to be honest, this is the best part of the movie.

It's not short on action, lots of gun fights, hand to hand combat and even a small cannon thrown in, some of it is not overly convincing but the movie is watchable and the decision to keep it short was sensible.

The acting such as when a guy got caught in a bear-trap is fairly basic and the whole thing, watching it now, is a little non-PC.

Widow's Walk
(2019)

Draws you in
A most unusual story that I guess you could categorise as a ghost story, it certainly raises lots of questions at the end.

An atmospheric start, various characters come and go and you're never entirely sure how they all fit in. I felt the early scenes needed to be supported by an underscore, somehow the English accent sounded flat against the vastness. The director loves a close up and there are some striking shots, I wonder if this was sometimes focused on at the expense of the story.

I felt it had flaws and yet somehow it completely drew me in. Certainly a fascinating movie to watch.

Emile
(2003)

Beautiful
What a gentle, understated movie this is. A few views of Victoria, Vancouver Island that brought back memories for me. The soft score complements the scenes in an unobtrusive way. Sir Ian McKellen underplays his role with generosity and skill. So gentle, the plot is almost an irrelevance.

I think a little longer could have been spent on the past flashback scenes to give the closing scenes more of an impact.

There is an overriding sadness throughout, this is a movie about being old, a movie about being young and a movie about family.

An unexpected gem.

El Corral
(2017)

Disturbing
What a disturbing little movie this is, yet still I found myself glued to it. Desperate to be liked, desperate to be noticed, icy cold on the outside, you never know what is going on inside someone's head.

A fascinating watch and yet also troubling.

Nurse on Wheels
(1963)

An easy watch
As gentle a movie as you will find, easy on the eye and puts a smile on your face. Lovely to see so many old favourite British actors popping up in little cameo roles and an 'Ear Worm' soundtrack that will be going round in my head for days. Beautiful views of the English countryside too.

Mr. Perrin and Mr. Traill
(1948)

Worryingly accurate I suspect
I found this to be a jaw dropping, rather disturbing movie. All about bullying, the headmaster bullying staff, the teacher bullying the children and the new teacher. Underneath all of this, the children treat it as the norm and are as happy as can be.

Terrific acting by all involved, this is, apart from the over-dramatic last ten minutes, an utterly believable movie.

The very last line is brilliantly delivered and says so much.

Terrific movie.

The Escort
(2015)

Comedy/Drama
I'm not a big fan of comedy drama, the humour dilutes the drama and equally, the drama is never edgy enough.

This is a likeable movie with two ridiculously good-looking leads. I never bought Lyndsy Fonseca as an escort girl, she just seemed too nice. Michael Doneger I believed more as the sex addict, I bet there are thousands of men trying to seek out the app he was using.

This would logically sit as a TV movie but there is way too much swearing and I'm not entirely sure where this movie will find its home.

The movie is so easy on the eye, it's hard to criticise and I did thoroughly enjoy it, I just wish it had fully pursued the drama route.

Fortuna no hitomi
(2019)

Delightful
Every now and then, a movie comes from nowhere and completely blows you away, this is such a movie.

Japanese, the subtitles were not even noticeable after a while, this is a well thought out, charming story which is neatly tied together and for me, had a 'Sixth Sense' moment of realisation which blew me away.

The two leads are a joy, full of energy and utterly committed to their roles, both good looking, it just adds to the joy of the movie.

Maybe it was fate that a stumbled across this movie and absent-mindedly pressed play, it is an absolute delight.

Amazon
(1990)

Such a strong message
Movies like this should be made to deliver the message that destroying rainforests is simply not okay.

It's an interesting movie that grew on me. A potentially strong lead never quite hits fourth gear and his pair of strong-willed daughters were engaging until pretty much disappearing from the screen. His sidekick buddy had potential and Rae Dawn Chong is underused but delivers a quiet confidence.

A couple of plane scenes were terrific and the movie for me was at its strongest when there was a mix of cultures. Absolutely fascinating, this storyline should have been explored more.

I feel it is a movie of missed opportunities although the message is so strong and so important, it is hard to criticise.

The Whiz Kid and the Carnival Caper
(1976)

The dark side of a Charlie's angel
A Disney TV movie with a sort of Scooby Doo feel. Alvin is a sort of tech genius who creates a robot that goes rogue and invented a mobile cleaning unit which was like something out of Those Magnificent Men In Their Flying Machines. Charlie's Angel Jaclyn Smith is on show as part of a shifty gang although it's difficult to take her seriously in a smart, pink suit. This is harmless fun, although why make the climax so dark?

Passionata
(1992)

Not the full symphony
Definitely had the look and feel of a TV movie. The lead characters did have chemistry but needed a little more character building at the start, the movie just gets straight into it! The piano playing appeared authentic and was lovely to listen to, some to the incidental background score worked against the dialogue and really wasn't in keeping with the subject matter and style of the movie. I never bought her ex-husband as a political figure and the movie suffered in authenticity whenever this character was on screen. A little cliched at times and the dialogue was quite one-level, but I engaged with it as a movie, the ending was not exactly what I was expecting and the 80 minutes running time flew by.

The House of the Seven Hawks
(1959)

Decent storyline
This movie has twists, in fact the twists have twists, which meant that occassionally I lost the thread a little. But this movie has merit, it is very well characterised throughout and has fascinating Dutch locations.

Exposed
(2016)

Maybe watch it again?
I understand this movie had its problems, try putting that to one side maybe and digging below the surface to a part of the storyline.

Ana de Armas is stunning. Reading through the plot after watching this movie, I decided to watch it again. Parts of this storyline entice you in and when the penny dropped as to what had happened, it had the same effect on me as The Sixth Sense. Thought provoking, tragic and sadly all too familiar to cases in real life.

Put the criticisms aside and give this a try.

The Old Guard
(2020)

Needs to lead somewhere
This is a great idea, the soldiers were well portrayed, particularly Charlize Theron and KiKi Layne who were proper kick-ass. The main villain was a bit Pantomime and the movie lost a little momentum for me towards the end. Tremendous promise, but this now needs to lead somewhere. So much scope for a series or further movies, doesn't necessarily need the major star names anyway. The scene has been set, let's hope that we get more.........

A Simple Wish
(1997)

Fun for the kids
Okay, 20 years on and a few of the special effects look a little clunky, but overall this is a well produced and good looking movie. You have to remind yourself that this is a children's film and forgive it a few things. Kathleen Turner is great value although underused, Martin short for me pushes his character just a little too far, you can kind of understand it, the idea of having a male fairy godmother is a good one. This certainly made me chuckle a few times and the Nebraska scene is hilarious. All in all, a very solid children's movie.

Why Me?
(2020)

What was this?
This is poorly scripted, has some weird imagination scenes and has some extremely average acting. Yet something about it kept me watching, a strong message of a bereaved eldest child caring for his siblings? But was it a rom-com or was it some kind of evangelical number? The actress who played Aisha saved this for me and yet weirdly, she's not credited on IMDB. This is an extremely flawed movie and. yet I still find myself enjoying it as I shook my head in disbelief.

Blue Ridge
(2020)

Underrated
I thought this was terrific. You absolutely believed in the feud and indeed, all the characters were totally believable. Well acted, beautiful scenery at times and yet the jarring music, which in my mind brilliantly portrayed the situation and setting, made you feel totally uneasy. This keeps you guessing right until the end. I don't care what other people rated this, I thought it was a little gem.

Uncorked
(2020)

A corker
This is not a movie about wine or becoming a sommelier although there are aspects of that. It is a movie about relationships, family life and respect and love. A movie bout ambition and fulfilling dreams that both you have and others have for you. The characters seemed normal and there is so much going on that is relatable. Highlight for me was the terrifically chosen soundtrack. I really enjoyed this.
