Eat the rat - is that a new "greeting" amongst surfers? If you are not sure what I am talking about ... you have to watch the movie to discover the "secret" greeting .. if you are man enough to watch the movie that is. Surf and survive and all that. It's a lifestyle - maybe not exactly the one you dream of.
And talking of that: you may get mad at Nic Cages character - he seems so obsessed with the idea ... so knee deep (or deeper) into the one thing ... it is not really something we as viewers will get entirely. Maybe not even a little - which brings us to the certain twists ... I do believe that the movie lays out what at least the biggest one is ... which makes it obsolete in a sense ... but the over the top performance by Cage may win you over again ... really tough to watch, especially with all the bad stuff going on ... and a toxic community/masculinity, that one should not support ... come to think of it, that does sound like a big industrial nation and presumably tough guy who leads them ... who could that be you ask?

Well it is one shot actually - no pun intended of course. Which makes the camera work really interesting and one to look out for (is that another pun) ... well done, which is important! ... what is less impressive: the characters ... really painful and hard to root for ... which is putting it quite nicely! I would go as far as you close to hating them.
They are at least obnoxious ... also not sure if they act different with the sickness than they would with the drugs ... it may be a statement .. one of many the movie tries to convey ... but we are all alone in the end ... whether we are good or bad ... anyway the movie is ... well the pace is high (another pun) ... can you keep up with it? Don't try to make sense of it.

Or is it bad call? No pun intended either way. For a first time feature length movie this really is well done. Especially the camera work (be it a car chase or a foot chase ... the movement of the camera is really one of the stars - if not the star of it all.
On the other hand this has quite a few issues with logic. And I mean the internal logic of the movie. As in what it tells us and what it shows us. There is a situation where one person could shoot another person .... which obviously would end the movie prematurely. There are other things that would make sense, but the pace of the movie likely helps you not to overthink the whole thing ... life matters ... and your own even more than others. So social commentary? A little for sure ... but is more interested in telling a suspenseful story ... than anything else.
