A Bigger Splash
(2015)

Pure torture. Even the location is unattractive.
**Update** I have just updated my rating and dropped this horrible film from 5 stars to 1 star. I was forced to re-watch this wretched cringe-worthy movie as I was visiting a friend who desperately wanted to see it because he's a Tilda Swinton fan. I didn't have the heart to tell him how I felt about this film, and good thing, as he actually liked it. Go figure. It was absolutely dreadful the second time.

**

I really disliked this film. It's pretentious in every way. The characters, every single one of them, are highly unlikable. If you met them at a party you'd say, "What assholes these people are!"

And with all the beautiful locations in Italy they chose this barren ugly piece of land on the island of Pantelleria, which I hope has more beautiful stretches than this. The reason they filmed here is likely because the filmmakers received some financial incentive.

I don't think I've cringed this much in a film in a very long time. The only reason I'm giving it five stars is because I'd like to support independent filmmaking. What a quandary.

Stylish and refreshing!
I loved this series. It's stylish, refreshing filmmaking and a great example of how television mini series can be better than cinema. The look of this series is like no other. The filmmakers take advantage of all that today's technology has to offer without letting it get in the way of the story.

It's also an interesting exercise in period filmmaking. It goes in a very bold direction, quite unlike most costume dramas the Brit's are known for. It also shows what you can be done when the filmmakers are in control, instead of a bunch Hollywood studio idiots imposing their dumb ideas and "audience testing" bullshit on the creatives. Hooray for Tom Hardy. Please sir, could I have some more?

Loved Everything About It!
What a refreshing show. So disappointed they only made these few episodes but happy to hear they're doing more.

I love how JK Rowling's ill feelings towards the publishing industry are subtly (and sometimes no so subtly) sprinkled about the stories. A bit of revenge. I wasn't familiar with the books, and never saw any Harry Potter films, but have come to appreciate Rowling for her political views.

Even though this could have been a standard, down-on-his-luck detective story, it's a new feeling and very fresh writing. I especially enjoyed the real Soho locations. The relationship between Cormoran and Robin is so very believable, you just root for them to get together. Holliday Grainger is excellent, she seems to be everywhere all of a sudden, which is great for we the viewers.

Terrific show, can't wait till next season.

Le jeune Karl Marx
(2017)

Worth a watch if you're politics buff
This is a beautifully presented historical drama – and a political story/argument. It's based on the letters exchanged between Marx (August Diehl) and Friedrich Engels (Stefan Konarske). The film follows their friendship from their first meeting all the way until the the drafting of the Communist Manifesto. The story illuminates their arguments, their friendship, and their personal histories.

Marx, played by August Diehl, in an angry way, impoverished, and looking for an argument. Engels, played by Stefan Konarske, is the wealthy fellow, a dandy and a romantic.

The problem is, watching people argue about communist theories reminds me of my college days, minus the joint. It can be tedious, especially given the failure of communism. Nevertheless it's interesting if you're into politics and history. In fact it's a perfect film to show in a university course on social studies because it is, I believe, historically accurate. I would love to see someone take these characters and plop them down in present day to reflect on the course their ideas have taken. THAT would be a great talking film.

Finally Germany made a great fantasy film.
I really loved this film. Saw it at the Fantasy Film Fest in Berlin. Finally Germany has made a great fantasy film. It's a great plot too: Someone murdered their families and these guys have to hunt them down, but they get caught in a wicked fantasy. It's soooo Berlin of the future. Very original. Hooray!
