Doctor Who: Rosa
(2018)
Episode 3, Season 11

Good concept, sloppy execution
I finally got around to watching this episode and I can see how much it has managed to polarise and in some cases, either move people or anger them. I feel like the concept was good, but it was fairly shoddily put together, the acting was passable and there are a couple of moving moments, but no way near as impactful as they should've been.

Children might learn a thing or two about an important moment in history, which is a positive, however there was very little science in the fiction and the antagonist was an afterthought. What was his real motivation, aside from being a silly racist? He was just a mere empty shell of a character.

Anyhow, I can appreciate the creativity behind the concept and the desire to put an interesting twist on an important story, but there are far better and far more moving examples of stories revolving around racial inequality that exist. Also, on a smaller note, I found that the song at the end completely took me out of the moment and had the opposite effect of what they were going for, why not use Ella Fitzgerald or something in that scenario? A song from the era the story was actually from.

Obi-Wan Kenobi: Part V
(2022)
Episode 5, Season 1

Improved, still flawed
Definitely a marked improvement on previous episodes, but still quite a few flaws that you just can't ignore. They've crammed as many flashbacks as they can in to one episode, which does come across as somewhat of a fan service type of episode.

Reva is finally revealed as the youngling that survived order 66 and she has been hunting Vader, she and Obi-wan have a conversation surrounded by Clones, who somehow don't overhear them, must be deaf. I enjoyed her fight scene with Vader, although there's no doubt that it could've been better, there's just something so underwhelming about modern saber fights, a mixture of directing, choreography and editing, perhaps also the saber models that they are using, it feels sluggish.

Reva is left with a stomach wound at the end of the fight, still alive, why do some people not question how she's managed to survive two stab wounds to the stomach? I'd be annoyed if I was Qui-Gon Jin. Also, why does Vader snap the necks of civilians, but leave without finishing her off? This is silly.

On the plus side, I thought that the death of Tala was handled very well, with Ned B trying to protect her, was quite a moving scene.

Again, a definite improvement, but still a messy episode, with too many flaws. However, I'm more hopeful now of the last episode being a good standard, we'll see.

Pardon the Expression
(1965)

Gets better
I have seen some harsh comments about this online, but I have to say I enjoyed quite a few episodes. If you can work your way through the first series, which is a slog at times, as admittedly it can be very dull, you'll find a more entertaining show with the second series. Arthur Lowe had very good chemistry with Robert Dorning, who becomes a series regular in the second series and the show was better for it and a lot funnier.

As a big Arthur Lowe fan I'm probably biased, but with the boring first series out of the way, I thoroughly enjoyed aspects of the second.

Bless Me, Father
(1978)

Underrated gem
I had mixed thoughts when I started watching this series, but I was pleasantly surprised. The characters are warm and the show draws you in, it has its own unique atmosphere. It's good fun and one of Arthur Lowe's best sitcoms after Dad's Army I feel, an underrated gem of a show in my opinion.

The 100: The Last War
(2020)
Episode 16, Season 7

Hollow
I defended this show earlier in its history, but the last few episodes are truly shocking. Season 7 has some bright ideas and it has moments of potential, but unfortunately it's just a mess. I like what they did with Murphy and I enjoyed his story arc, but characters such as Clarke become overbearing in my opinion. As for Bellamy, he discovers his faith and reappears only to be shot by Clarke for a book, it's beyond stupid. These are two people that loved each other for years, the two leading characters of the show, but Bellamy is given a cheap shock death.

The season feels rushed, the ending left me feeling confused and empty, empty sums up most of the season. Some of the characters transcend, this has a very religious tone. We're led to believe that transcendence is a good thing, human beings have earned the right to transcend, yet the whole thing seems dubious to say the least.

some get to live together on earth in peace, they embrace, the end. I'm sure they lived a happy existence as implied, actually I'm kidding, if you think about it they probably lived a fairly miserable existence, especially Clarke.

You're supposed to feel the characters emotions, I got bored of the tears and I also got bored of the deaths, each death seems more hollow that the last. I got to the point where I no longer cared, despite these being characters I've been emotionally invested in for years, that says it all about the level of writing.

I don't even think the idea of higher beings and transcendence is inherently bad, it's just handled terribly. I still like show, but not the direction it went in and I don't think I'll bother with a prequel knowing how Jason Rothenburg operates.

Only Fools and Horses
(1981)

Classic
There seems to be a number of bad reviews for this show that have cropped up over the last year or so, I would like to say, everybody has the right to their own opinion. However, if you feel the need to insult people for enjoying this show or any other show for that matter, then you really have no business being on this site and it's actually you, not others who has the intelligence of a rock, you know who you are. Obviously not everyone is going to enjoy the same show and that's fine, but for me there's a reason why this show is repeated often, there's a reason it sells well on dvd and there's a reason people buy it on modern platforms such as ITunes, that's because it's actually good.

Duck Soup
(1933)

Classic
A film which never ceases to make me laugh, no matter how many times I've seen it. The 7.8/10 rating is okay and I can live with it, but I think it deserves more. Each to their own taste, but if Hollywood tried to make a film in this vein now, they couldn't achieve it. They could not find a group of people with more chemistry, charisma or endearing qualities, they'll never be another Marx Brothers. I've been a fan of the Marx Brothers since I was a child, the world can be a cruel place and their films will always make me laugh and forget about life, just briefly. Duck Soup is probably their most famous movie, it's just over an hour of what I'd call non stop crazy energy and I love it. It might not be for everyone and that's okay, but it certainly is for me, this is a classic in my book and I couldn't give it anything less than a 10/10.

Star Wars Rebels: Family Reunion - and Farewell
(2018)
Episode 15, Season 4

Fantastic
When The Clone Wars ended, I was upset and disappointed, I was unsure whether to watch the Rebels series or not, but I decided to give it a go. It took a while, but this series has grown on me, the show is well written, the characters are unique and interesting and if you like Ahsoka Tano, you won't be disappointed, as she makes a return in Rebels. The last season is far from perfect, but there is more than one brilliant episode, with moments that pull on the heartstrings.

In my opinion, the finale is simply fantastic and I can happily say, it's as good as anything that The Clone Wars had to offer and it puts The Last Jedi to shame comfortably. Actually, I'm kind of disappointed that the Clone Wars is returning and we won't get a spin off of this particular series. I hope that one day a series is created, where we get to see new adventures featuring a grown up Ezra, potentially alongside Ahsoka.

Night Owls
(1930)

Who cares about the plot, it's Laurel & Hardy.
I've read quite a few reviews of Laurel and Hardy films and a similar pattern is emerging, for some reason a few people want to analyse the plot. This is old fashioned comedy at its finest and some of the best slapstick that you are likely to see, the plot was never intended to be the focal point of any of their films. The same thing can be said about a number of comedy teams at the time, so I'm not sure where their critical view of a weak plot comes from, certainly die hard fans of this duo cannot be surprised about the thin plot and to be honest, who cares?

More sophisticated comedy exists, but not many films or sitcoms can touch Laurel and Hardy's brilliance. I often feel let down by comedy in modern times, Night Owls though is harmless, hilarious and it does what comedy should do, it makes you laugh and it makes you feel good. If you seek comedy films with a better plot, then by all means search for what is right for you, otherwise perhaps it's best to leave Laurel and Hardy to people who love, admire and enjoy comedy from this era, because they are far above and beyond what some people are making them out to be, on this website. Overall, I would recommend Night Owls, in my opinion it is close to the level of Helpmates and Music Box, some of their finest work.

Baby the Rain Must Fall
(1965)

The Middle Ground
I have read some of the reviews for this film, some people state that this is one of the greatest films that Steve McQueen appeared in, not at all in my opinion, it's a good film, but it certainly isn't one of his best. Other people state that it's a terrible film, one reviewer even goes as far as saying that it's the worst film that he's ever seen, we all have our own opinions, but the worst film that he has ever seen? His film collection must be fairly small.

Baby the Rain Must Fall is not one of Steve McQueen's most well known films, nor one of his most action packed films, but it is somewhat of an obscure little gem. Again, upon reading reviews, it is clear that people have mixed views about Steve McQueen's performance in this film, one of the weakest parts of the film is the overdubbing, clearly Steve McQueen does not sing, but he cannot take any blame for this, so putting that aside I would say that McQueen does a fine job of portraying Henry Thomas. There are one or two stand out scenes for me, in which he excels, but I won't give anything away, the other actors also gave strong performances, Lee Remick playing the role of Georgette Thomas very well, I think that both of the leading actors complimented each other brilliantly.

I watched this late at night, in darkness, not expecting to see a typical Steve McQueen film, judging by some reactions to the film, others may have watched this film with preconceived notions, which is foolish. This is not a movie to watch with a group of friends, it's not a popcorn movie, it's a dark and unique drama, which was shot in some interesting locations. As a fan of Steve McQueen, I quite often watch one of his films, the reality is he appeared in two or three obscure films, that happen to be very good in my opinion, Soldier in the Rain is a personal favourite of mine, The War Lover is a good film, Hell is for Heroes is an underrated war film, I enjoyed Baby the Rain must Fall, but I would rather watch the other three films that I mentioned, and they wouldn't be in my list of the top five McQueen films. I really don't think that Baby the Rain must Fall is as good as others have said it is, but it is no way near as bad as some people have made it out to be, it's a good film that's worth watching.

The Ipcress File
(1965)

Classic spy movie, deserves more respect
I am a big fan of Michael Caine, but I do my best to rate and review his films fairly. I first saw this film on television, it was actually a recommendation, and I loved it. I loved the style of it, the pacing, the story and the acting, not to mention that excellent score from John Barry, the main title theme is unforgettable. The locations used in the film make for a unique viewing experience, as does the way that it is shot, it is very 60's, stylish yet dark and mysterious, whilst maintaining a sense of gritty realism, spoiler alert, if you can forgive the fairly dated torture scene, dated it may be, but tense and distressing it is. Having read reviews that suggest that The Ipcress File itself is dated, my argument is that it was a different era, films were different, fashion was different, acting was somewhat different, a slightly dated film should not effect your viewing experience. As I previously mentioned, I am a big fan of Michael Caine, and The Ipcress File would be my favourite Caine film, a classic.
