Halloween
(2007)

Michael Myers, how it all began....
I've been fortunate enough to see a studio screening of this movie & I was both excited & nervous about what was to follow. I'm a massive fan of the Halloween movie franchise, so I was expecting this to be no more than just another way for the studios to make money off of an already great series of films & not do a very good job of it.

I was wrong, partly....

What this version did that the original didn't was to spend the first 50 minutes with Michael Myers as a boy, played very well by Daeg Faerch. We got to see how things happened in his past; the abusive step-father, the bullying at school & his fascination with making masks. We also got to see his youth, which was spent in an mental institution under the watchful eye of Dr. Sam Loomis (Malcolm McDowell), where his fascination with masks continued & also, the bullying & abuse from orderlies.

All of this was done pretty well & it was nice to see these bits that had never been done in the original, although for a long time, I was thinking maybe they should call it Halloween: The Beginning, as it spent so much time on this.

Then we get to the parts of the movie that we all remember where Michael returns 'home' to Haddonfield in search of his younger sister, Laurie (Scout Taylor-Compton) & the bloodbath begins.

When in Haddonfield, the story unrolls pretty much the same as the original did, so I don't need to go into too much detail about that here. Those that have seen the original will know what happens & those that never have can enjoy it for the first time & not have me spoiling it for them :)

& so, there we are.

The remake of a classic horror actually done pretty well. Did it need doing at all? Not really, but at least now, a lot will get to see for the 1st time. I know many younger generation people that never have seen the original because they class it as being rubbish because it's too old. Very lame excuse, I know, but its the truth!

Tiswas
(1974)

"This Is Saturday, what a show!"
Tiswas is without a doubt one of the greatest ever children's TV show ever made! It was an absolute treat to watch when I was a kid & after recently seeing the 'Best Of' DVD which I purchased, it is still hilariously funny! I badly wanted to be put into the cage & have buckets of water thrown over me every week, but I never managed to get on the show (I even tried getting on via Jim'll Fix It!).

The show itself was total nonsense. No real purpose at all; just lots of people doing very stupid things & getting extremely soaked by many things including, water, custard, semolina & baked beans, but the main one was the Phantom Flan Flinger who got the lucky job of throwing custard pies into the faces of many a big celebrity every week.

Classic scene for me was when Lenny Henry was reading the news as Trevor McDougal (pretending to be the legend, Trevor McDonald) & then the main man himself walked out with Lenny Henry knowing nothing about it!

While many of today's youngsters may not find this funny at all, Tiswas was, without a doubt, one of the best ever children's shows on TV. Had it not been done, a lot of the stuff we see today may not have been brought into existence.

A MUST SEE for anyone that remembers the show but look out, that Phantom Flan Flinger may still be around, so be careful......!!

10/10 classic stuff
