This Boy's Life
(1993)

Sad but true...I still love it...
Leonardo DiCaprio shows off his bad boy side in this film, playing the rebellious teen Tobias Wolff in the late 50's. Toby, or "Jack" as he likes to be called, smokes cigarettes, curses strongly, drinks liquor and hangs out with his naughty friends for fun. He was once that innocent boy who just wanted to find a father that would last longer than a month and searched for Uranium with his mother "Caroline" for money. Roy, Caroline's new boyfriend, is very naughty and just wants kisses from his baby. Caroline and Toby have had enough and drive away in the old Nash Ambassador. Caroline meets a man named Dwight Hanson, who is abusive to Toby behind her back, which only makes Toby worse. I love how they use the nice songs from the 50's like "Summertime Blues" by Eddie Cochran. It's a very nice story based on the book, and like The Basketball Diaries, it leaves out/changes a few things, but otherwise it's one of Leo's best films. At the end, he cries when his mother leaves to get a real job, and Toby grows up to be a better boy. 9/10.

Total Eclipse
(1995)

"They're trying to deprive you of the juice!"
I blame this movie for awakening my mind to Rimbaud's poetry. I'm actually quite glad I saw the trailer for this. Paul Verlaine and Arthur Rimbaud were wild lovers, getting drunk on Absinthe and ruining local poetry readings. But that made their poetry- Arthur's poetry, anyways- better than before. Paul's was alright, but Arthur's was amazing. I have a whole book of his poetry including A Season In Hell, Illuminations and a series of letters. Also some writings about a girl named Timothina Labinette he was in love with (before he met Paul). And I have nothing against gay people, and I don't care if it's against God's word. I don't care if men were made to marry women. People can do what they want as long as they're not hurting anyone. Back to Rimbaud. As soon as I saw the real Rimbaud, I fell in love. But I could never understand his poetry because it wasn't the real thing. I was reading it online. But now that I'm reading the stuff that he actually wrote, I'm satisfied. The music in the movie is wonderful. Jan A.P. Kaczmarek does a beautiful job with the cello and the clarinet and the flute. If I close my eyes, I can imagine myself riding in a carriage with Rimbaud in the 19th century. I would love to go to a museum about him. Did I mention I have the whole soundtrack from 1995? Yeah, it's a CD. Yay.

The Basketball Diaries
(1995)

This guy isn't a drug addict???
Now this movie- oh boy, it's a toughie. If you haven't seen this movie yet, see it AS SOON AS YOU CAN. Leonardo DiCaprio's performance as Jim Carroll is spot on. It seems that he really has an addiction to cocaine and heroin. Yes, he was trained by a coach to study the physical and mental side effects of drugs, but other than that he was a- mazing. Mark Wahlberg was okay, too, I guess. But he was actually addicted to cocaine when he was a teen, so it was easier for him. You think Trainspotters is good? Check this out! It will definitely make you think twice about drug and alcohol abuse, trust me. If you struggled with drugs in previous years, you'll fully understand this plot. Although it isn't 100% accurate to the book, I think Mr Kalvert did a good job. So watch this movie ASAP. If you dislike DiCaprio, this will change your thoughts.

The Aviator
(2004)

Flies Right Off The Charts!
Having played a mentally challenged young adult many years before, I believe Leonardo DiCaprio had this Howard Hughes thing under his belt. He just makes it work; the OCD, the facial expressions, the attitude, the accent, everything was perfect. This is no doubt better than all the rest that mimic Howard Hughes' life and career. Though, at the end, it's sort of confusing what happens to Mr Hughes. Did he die? Did he curl up in a ball and stay there until someone came to take him away? There are only theories. Anything is possible. He could've lived on under an alias or simply faked his obsessive-compulsive disorder. That's my father's idea, anyways. But really, another DiCaprio film that should have over ten stars.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape
(1993)

This movie is Gilbert GREAT!
The acting in this film, especially 18 year old Leonardo DiCaprio's performance as mentally challenged Arnie Grape, is absolutely extraordinary. A few mistakes here and there, but otherwise it is one of my favorite films. I've watched it three times and it never gets old. Never will. I must praise Mr DiCaprio more than the other actors/actresses in this movie because he really worked hard to nail this role. Even before the training, studying, etc... he had the crew wrapped around his dirty little fingers. The role belonged to him. I couldn't imagine anyone else playing it. If they did, I would have never seen the movie. Why the Oscar didn't go to him, I don't know. The Academy treats him like just another Disney star, which he isn't. If it weren't for him, The Aviator, Revolutionary Road and other films wouldn't exist. I can't believe he hasn't won an Oscar yet. That's bull crap.

Darlene Cates- wow. She really knows how to act, just like Leo. Crying, nailed it. Depression, nailed it. Demanding her son back from the police station, nailed it. Being beautiful, nailed it. How she managed to keep her eyes closed and stay still while Arnie shook her and yelled in her ear, that's incredible. Like Titanic, this movie deserves well over ten stars.

Titanic
(1997)

Amazing movie!!!
Being seen as one of the greatest movies in Hollywood, this film deserves well over ten stars. The cast members perfectly match their historical/fictional characters; Leonardo DiCaprio as Jack Dawson, Kate Winslet as Rose DeWitt Bukater, Billy Zane as Caledon Hockley and many more. The storyline is epic and romantic at the same time, and the script is very well written. James Cameron has done a great job bringing the disastrous story of Titanic back to life and giving it a romance between the two main characters. I must say, Leo DiCaprio has perfected his deaths. A good movie for the modern day teenage girl to watch.
